Abounding in every kitchen, but an unsatisfactory meal in themselves: budget defenders are the condiments of the Fantasy football feast. Only earning a place at the table if they marry with the main course, for every ketchup there’s a forgotten chutney, peacefully gathering mould in the dusty recesses of the cupboard. With few Fantasy managers ambitious of employing their free transfers to chop and change the cheapies that no longer cut the mustard, and fewer still prepared to pay points to preserve themselves from such pickles, Winter Wildcard season affords a welcome window to clear the shelves and stock up afresh for the closing months of the campaign:

Boasting both long term promise and short term appeal, Swansea’s Ben Davies stakes a claim as the most appetising option in the budget bracket at present. Promoted to the starting line up in the wake of Neil Taylor’s broken leg on September 1, the young Welshman has ably fended off competition from emergency signing Dwight Tiendalli to make the left-back berth his own. Initially priced at just 4.0 in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL), a cool million less than the rest of the Swansea rearguard, Davies has emerged as the obvious choice for those keen to tap into the clean sheets on offer from Michael Laudrup’s side.

Swansea sit joint seventh in the Premier League in terms of clean sheets, and fifth in terms of fewest goals conceded – on both counts that’s comfortably ahead of Manchester United, and crucially it’s a better defensive record than the other teams with budget defenders on offer. Of players with an initial price of 4.0 in the FPL, Davies currently sits third in terms of total points on 56, with only the potentially Canada-bound Ryan Nelsen and the hamstrung Hammer Joey O’Brien ahead of him. Even if Nelsen stays at Loftus Road and O’Brien quickly recovers, the Swans’ fixture list should afford Davies the chance to challenge for the top spot over the coming weeks.

Stoke arrive at the Liberty on Saturday in uncharacteristically shaky form, having shipped 10 goals in their last three games and failed to find the net away from the Britannia since December 1. Following that are trips to Sunderland and West Ham – both of whom boast an underwhelming tally of just 24 goals for the season thus far. As the spring approaches the Swans host strugglers QPR and Newcastle, with a testing trip to Anfield tucked in between.

Priced at just 4.2 in the FPL (3.6 in the Sky Sports game) Fantasy managers are likely to have few qualms about playing Davies at home and benching him for tricky away trips but it’s worth noting that the Swans backline has been breached just twice in their last five away games. Indeed, a total of nine goals against outside of the Liberty is the joint-best away defence along with Arsenal. With fullbacks afforded license to roam in Laudrup’s system, those who opt for a home-only schedule over the short-term (STK, QPR, NEW) should provide Davies good chances to augment his haul of two assists and reap returns at both ends of the pitch.

Yea AVB seems to really take a long time to bring injured players back. It's not without understanding, to a degree, but we've waited on several guys for a while throughout the season. Sometimes seemingly weeks after they're fully fit and practicing with the team.

Wigan sealed a place in the fourth round of the FA Cup with Mauro Boselli's first-half strike ending Bournemouth's 18-match unbeaten run.

Boselli found the top corner of the net after Harry Arter lost the ball.

I like it a lot. Your defense might struggle a bit, but the front 3 is great and the midfield is solid. I like Bale more than Walcott or maybe even Mata but those 3 are reasonably close. I would maybe take a punt on Dawson, because if he can get regular time he would substantially improve your defense.

transfer one in and one out. Basically i will prob stick with mata predominently as he is more consistent and dodge bale. I always buy and sell him at wrong times and miss points but if he goes mental and rivals bring in I will clearly need to follow

Thats a pretty risky strategy as they both can explode any given game. I`d either try to get both, or try to ignore one of them or try to cover with other players, like Defoe or maybe Ba.

Aguero rotation risk, about 15% I reckon is as much as I can handle for a 6m+ player. If Ba rips it up playing 2 out of 3 obviously I will change my mind!

"Abounding in every kitchen, but an unsatisfactory meal in themselves: budget defenders are the condiments of the Fantasy football feast. Only earning a place at the table if they marry with the main course, for every ketchup there’s a forgotten chutney, peacefully gathering mould in the dusty recesses of the cupboard. With few Fantasy managers ambitious of employing their free transfers to chop and change the cheapies that no longer cut the mustard, and fewer still prepared to pay points to preserve themselves from such pickles"

Yeah, we talked about this yesterday. a good manager would, and should, play both. Rafa needs the fans to be behind the team, if he plays Torres on his own and he fails again then he and Torres are in a mess...I'm not sure how such a good team as Chelsea have managed to be getting booed off but it has to change or it will affect them on the pitch soon....

It's a player who has sneaked under the radar and has a low ownership.

Basically, if you've got RVP and he scores, you rise along with half the players in the comp. If you have, say, Boselli, and he scores, you're pretty much the only person on the planet who gets the points.

I'll settle for another 2 points from Luke this week.

Sorry I lied, I would settle for 1 point from Luke, after Ba's hat-trick.

Only for long term. Won't be worth it even with the DGW in the very short term.

I was thinking the other way around. It's worth it for the immediate short term, long term you'd want Bale.

Anyone considering Walters? 4 goals in his last 2 games. Even scored at the Britannia.

This never gets old. It was his 100th game in the PL as well. Legendary.

I actually have a soft spot for him for his workrate. I remember his goal against West Ham I thunk it was, from the corner routine that involved decoy runs to the near post from everyone else. Well executed.

Whoops, almost forgot about Santi. Which of these set-ups do you think will return the most points (hit included):

    Santi Cazorla -4pts (che/WHM)
    Gareth Bale (MUN)

I nearly picked him for my Wildcard team. Could be a good option, I just don't rate the team he plays for.

Yeah, blame here, but fixtures look good and Johnson I starting to fire. Another stumbling block is that he's not on pens

For me the sticking point would be that you want Bale straight back in the following gw

Hmm.. I'm considering the same problem without the -4 point hit..
I have a sneaky feeling Bale will win it.
