Having been widely expected to move on loan to Bolton in a deal mirroring that of Jack Wilshere’s last winter, Carlos Vela has instead headed for the Hawthorns to star for West Brom until the end of the season. Despite Owen Coyle holding talks with the player, it seems that Bolton couldn’t agree terms and Roberto di Matteo moved quickly to bolster his up front options with the capture of the young Mexican.

Not that it’s all down to money though, as the Baggies Sporting & technical director Dan Ashworth explained upon completion of the deal:

“Arsenal and Carlos had a lot of options and I’m delighted both the club and player have chosen us. It’s been well documented that Arsenal were keen for Carlos to stay in this country and the Premier League but I think a key factor was that they looked favourably on our style of play and performances this season.”

The Statistics

This will be Vela’s third loan stint since joining up with Arsenal; in 2006-07, he starred for Segunda Division Salamanca, scoring 8 goals and assisting 15 times in 31 games. The following season saw him back in Spain, this time in the top division with Osasuna, where he returned 3 goals and 4 assists for the La Liga side.

The past three seasons have seen him stay at the Emirates, but Vela has found it nigh on impossible to force a way into the Gunners first team, with the likes of Robin Van Persie, Samir Nasri, Andrei Arshavin, Theo Walcott and Marouanne Chamakh all ahead of him in the pecking order.

As a result, he’s played just 29 league games for Arsenal, and, with the vast majority of these coming from the subs bench, scored just 3 goals. An established starter for his national team, Vela has returned 9 goals in 34 matches for Mexico, a sign he can find the net with regularity if given the chance.

The Prospects

Di Matteo is a keen fan of a 4-5-1 formation and it will intriguing as to exactly where he sees Vela fitting into the starting XI. The Baggies boss was clearly delighted with his new acquisition, saying last night:

Carlos is a new attacking option for us who can play both centrally and in the wide areas. He also has great technical ability and pace and we’re hoping he can make a big impact during the remainder of the season.

There’s no doubt that Carlos has the potential to become a great player and it will hopefully be a win-win situation, where we help him by giving him game time in the Premier League while he helps us achieve our goal.

This Average Position map was taken from West Brom’s last league match, away to Blackburn. Will it be Jerome Thomas (14) who makes way on the left wing or James Morrison (7) as the attacking central midfielder? Will Somen Tchoyi (5), a sub for the Ewood park match, find himself further down the pecking order on the right wing or will Peter Odemwingie (24) be moved out wide for Vela to lead the line?

It’s clear Di Matteo sees Vela’s adaptability as a huge plus and with key players such as Odemwingie and Graham Dorrans spending time on the sidelines with injuries this season, the on-loan Gunner could offer the solution to more than one problem.

With Fantasy Managers eyeing up West Brom attacking options in light of their double game week 27 (WHM, WLV) the next couple of fixtures should give a hint as to exactly how and where Vela fits into the equation. Priced at a mere £4.4m in Fantasy Premier League (FPL) Vela, backed by the creativity of Chris Brunt, could well prove to be a real bargain as the club go hunting goals in their fight for Premier League survival.

I get that if they sell him that they are hopeing the new guy isn't a flop in this league and they wont have time to spend the money in this window but if he handed in a transfer request why would you want him playing?

Its like the wazza saga but liverpool are VERY bad so can understand why he wants to leave.

I never thought we'd ever get him but im buzzing 😛

With his scoring record for liverpool imagine what he could do at Chelsea 🙂

I would rather us go for Aguero myself but Torres isnt exactly a bad alternative, Anelka looked particuarly sluggish today so as long as we get someone I will be happy.

I always worry can some players adapt to the prem but at least with Torres hes been tried and tested.

Wanted the Aguero transfer to go through during the summer myself and I have a feeling he will eventually end up there.

Chelsea buying Torres for anything over ten million is a waste of money as Torres will be injured for most of the time anyway so Chelsea would have been better off making an offer for Gyan as Gyan and Drogba would be immense as they know each other well.

If the England squad was picked on form the top scoring midfielder in the Premier League should be in the squad. Lampard isnt fully fit and Gerrard isn't pulling up trees this season either.

You seem to have taken that comment as an attack but its not meant to be.

Nolan is lightyears behind Lampard/Gerrard in terms of ability, there are other attacking midfielders i'd rather have in than Nolan too.

Barton though should be playing in a midfield three with Lampard/Gerrard and a defensive midfielder.

Sorry mate I wasn't having a go, I agree in terms of ability then Lampard and Gerrard are better than Nolan. However I would like to see him get his chance, and if (as they keep telling us) they are picking it on form he deserves a chance.
Personally though I would be happy for Lampard and Gerrard never to play for England again, they've had their time and I believe we should blood a new team. People like Wilshere, Rodwell etc

I did not say all african players are Mates you muppet. Gyan made an interview before Sunderland played Chelsea and he said Drogba had helped his career a lot and they were mates and Drogba was a player he wanted to play like. You are the fool you can't read something without misunderstanding it. Plus Gyan played better than Drogba in that game.

no i understood it perfectly thanks very much for the explanation though!

Chelsea dont need a player like Gyan, no more Africans, certainly not forwards, as that would mean we lost Kalou, Drogba, Gyan along with Mikel and Essien every ACoN.

Wasn't it 18 million anyway? It rises to a max of 24 million if they gain the ultimate success and win the champions league, so the chances of them paying much more is, well, unlikely.
Same with Rio Ferdinand. Unied bought him for 18 million from Leeds and with all the extras involving England caps, league medals, champions league took it to 29m and that is exactly what they paid in the end.

Torres hasn't been invited to any of Drogba's box socials or barn dances, not even one. Ancelotti is mad if he thinks getting Torres is a good idea.

However, Drogba does get on quite well with his plumber, so wouldn't be surprised to see him snapped up before the window closes.

      hi,
im going with this i think

      Foster - Begovic
      Carr - Coleman - Foley - Collins - Simpson
      Fabregas - Nani - Adam - VDV - Nolan
      Tevez - RVP - Odemwingie

Fab -> Cahill and then Adam -> Fab in the weeks afterwards...

Huth is brilliant value imo. Don't think I'm going for Roger Johnson actually, it would be for a hit and don't fancy it especially when I can just play Kelly or Coleman that week, who have two decent fixtures.

It seems like I made a mistake getting in Murphy on my WC last week.
    VdS/ Foster
    Djourou/ Walker/ Kelly/ Coleman/ Murphy.
It doesn't look like he will get games now.
    What u reckon;
    Replace with Simpson (same price)
I have 0.9 in bank. Is it completely mad to consider a WBA defender? DGW27 is attractive but they never seem to get a cleanie?
Other choices? maybe Blackburn or Fulham?
    Thanks

        Southampton vs Man Utd

Southampton: Bialkowski, Butterfield, Fonte, Seaborne, Harding, Oxlade-Chamberlain, Schneiderlin, Chaplow, Do Prado, Lambert, Barnard

Subs: Davis, Richardson, Dickson, Martin, Gobern, Doble, N'Guessan

Man Utd: Lindegaard, O'Shea, Evans, Smalling, Fabio Da Silva, Gibson, Anderson, Scholes, Obertan, Hernandez, Owen

Subs: Kuszczak, Brown, Berbatov, Rooney, Giggs, Nani, Bebe

        Referee: Martin Atkinson (W Yorkshire)
        --

SAF not repeating his mistake of not taking some good players on the bench as he did against West Ham. I look forward to watching young Oxlade-Chamberlain, first time for me.
