A disappointing Monday night affair saw Southampton dominate the opening period, only to concede ground in the second-half as Everton gained superiority. With little on show for Fantasy managers, here’s the Monday night Stock Check…

On the Up

The Southampton Defence
A second clean sheet in the last three maintained the form of the much-improved Saints rearguard. With Artur Boruc making several key saves, he is presenting a seemingly assured budget option in goal for a 4.4 Fantasy Premier League (FPL) price tag, while both Luke Shaw and Nathaniel Clyne go on offering value for their 4.0 valuations.

Leighton Baines
In truth, the service from the Toffees left-back was not up to its usual standard but, having gained his second consecutive clean sheet, Baines delivered returns and, pre-bonus, is now just six points of the top of the FPL defender rankings. With West Brom and Villa at Goodison in the next two, further profits look on the cards for those who have kept the faith.

Going Down

Marouane Fellaini
It’s no goal in his last five starts for the towering Belgian. More significantly perhaps, the injury to Seamus Coleman forced a reshuffle that saw David Moyes shift him back to a deeper central midfield role and introduce Victor Anichebe up front. With Kevin Mirallas looking bright from the bench on his return from injury, Moyes has further attacking options and there will be slight concerns that the Everton boss may consider a change of position for Felliani having seen his side draw consecutive blanks.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

Baines & Fellaini get 11pts between them for the second week running, not bad considering Everton have not scored a goal in those fixtures.

Those 11 points = 300k places in GW rank 😯

      I'm happy with 9 from Clyne & Punch, a whole £6.4, cheaper.

Everton's 5 of the next 6 are primed for Everton to do well.

    Thoughts from watching tonight's game...

    FELLAINI TONIGHT
Regarding Fellaini's positioning tonight, he was unambiguously playing in the hole/striker for the first half, in fact probably too far forward. He was completely isolated. They were hoofing it to him but it wasn't working today, the whole Everton team passed appallingly badly, Stoke would have been embarrassed.

In the second half Coleman came off with an injury and that forced Neville to cover him at RB. This forced Fellaini to play CM alongside Osman. Anichebe came on and played in the hole.

Everton were getting pressed so badly it probably was necessary to bring Fellaini deeper in this game just to compete in midfield, until Saints tired in the second half, they made the pitch so small.

    FELLAINI'S PROSPECTS
Assuming Everton have someone to play at RB next game and free up Neville to play CM, I'd expect Fellaini back in the hole. Even if they don't, Hitzlsperger is available to play CM.

    SAINTS AND EVERTON
I am impressed with Saints' pressing shutting down Everton's generally impressive passing game. I would think twice before picking attackers against them. Puncheon sh*t jokes aside, he passed very well, displayed great motivation, handled Baines remarkably adeptly and was a goal threat. He's definitely got the runs. Lambert just got unlucky. Ramirez has promised so much (he even got a BAP today) but looks increasingly injury prone. Reluctantly, I might have to forget about getting him.

As for Everton, I think they are simply not converting their chances as opposed to not creating any. Remember all those weeks when you owned Baines and they weren't converting his chances. They're up to the same tricks, except he's creating less now.

IMO they are simply paying the price for not having enough striker depth to have a reliable striker playing all season. They've been carrying Jelavic all season, Mirallas has been injured a while, and Anichebe unnerves defenders but isn't the greatest finisher. Contrast Everton with United who have Hernandez in reserve, City who have Dzeko, Dempsey/Defoe/Ade for Spurs, Chelsea whose midfielders score goals anyway. Compare it to Arsenal. We are always one injury away from blanksville.

Yeah they played some superb stuff in the first half. Much as I liked Adkins maybe we just have to embrace this new guy's philosophy... he looks very single minded and they were strikingly different in the first half

      Good, balanced analysis.

S'oton has the majority of the first half which didn't help Fellaini, and when Everton got going, he spent the majority of that time sitting deep, but only due to an injury to Coleman.

Nice analysis. I would say, though, that Southampton's best chance was squandered by Lambert not passing and not by being unlucky. When he shot with his left foot and Guly was open in the box. They really should have scored there.

Ah yes I remember that now. Funny really as usually he's great at creating chances. Taking matters into his own hands I guess.

Lambert drove me mad in midseason, he must have hit the woodwork at least 3 times in a scoreless month. He hit the post today!

      YOU ARE THE JEL:

A cross from the left, 8 yards out, do you
      A) Swing your left boot at it to tap it in.

Fancy keeping Puncheon on my WC. Bought him at 4.4, done me quite well and looks a very decent FPL pck (i.e. greedy as anything).

Considering rotating him with Benteke which gives:
NEW wig WHM new QPR rdg QPR LIV rdg WHM swa WBA/SUN nor sun wig

What do you reckon? Worth a go? Too expensive?
