634x258 The Stock Check

A disappointing Monday night affair saw Southampton dominate the opening period, only to concede ground in the second-half as Everton gained superiority. With little on show for Fantasy managers, here’s the Monday night Stock Check…

On the Up

The Southampton Defence
A second clean sheet in the last three maintained the form of the much-improved Saints rearguard. With Artur Boruc making several key saves, he is presenting a seemingly assured budget option in goal for a 4.4 Fantasy Premier League (FPL) price tag, while both Luke Shaw and Nathaniel Clyne go on offering value for their 4.0 valuations.

Leighton Baines
In truth, the service from the Toffees left-back was not up to its usual standard but, having gained his second consecutive clean sheet, Baines delivered returns and, pre-bonus, is now just six points of the top of the FPL defender rankings. With West Brom and Villa at Goodison in the next two, further profits look on the cards for those who have kept the faith.

Going Down

Marouane Fellaini
It’s no goal in his last five starts for the towering Belgian. More significantly perhaps, the injury to Seamus Coleman forced a reshuffle that saw David Moyes shift him back to a deeper central midfield role and introduce Victor Anichebe up front. With Kevin Mirallas looking bright from the bench on his return from injury, Moyes has further attacking options and there will be slight concerns that the Everton boss may consider a change of position for Felliani having seen his side draw consecutive blanks.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

Ideal one to partner RVP and Suarez for the next 3 fixtures :

Some guy posted that "Jelly makes Torres look mediocre". I agree with that statement, he's not been setting the world on fire lately. Everton in general hasn't had the same bite. There's a reason he's not widely owned.

True, But I would have to take a hit for Aguero. Pod and Haz out for Aguero and Lenon whereas no hit is required for Pod to Jelly or Defoe. And next 3 fixtures are falling more kindly for Everton and Spurs IMO. Nice team value Dogba..

Not too keen on Dong-Won Ji or Cech and Cerny, Wilson over Nelsen as Nelsen is going. Too much in midfield. If you did Suarez->Sturridge or Aguero and Silva->Fellaini you'd have money to improve weak areas

Until he can't. I think it's too risky, can't tell how many times I've had to utilize Sterling who was "bench-fodder" this season. Second half of the season could easily be similar. Worth using a little extra to get a decent backup, Ruiz or at the very least Pog.

heavy hitters in the back are doing my head.

    candidates:

1 - Baines, 7.5, 2 good fixtures and then a mixed bag. form seems to be medium (despite the two CS in a row - the supply he gives has weaken)
2 - Zab, 6.0, very good run, slight rotation risk a few gws down the road, decent attacking potential, high CS probability week in week out.
3 - Rafa/Evans - 6.0/5.8 united has a great run of fixtures and tightened up in the back - but who is really guaranteed game time?
4 - Arsenal - vermalen has a very quiet season, does not justify the price over gibbs - 5.7 with many home games to come (3 of the next 4) and some attacking potential
5 - Totenham with a strong defensive resulute and decent fixtures - BAE for 6.0 can be a good shout over vertonghen who has some rotation risk but more attacking potential. walker for 6.1 has similar attacking potential as BAE, thou BAE operates on Bale's side and we saw last season this means more assists.
6 - Shawx - 6.0 was gold early own but stoke is going through a rough patch - and wilson comes back soon as an uber cheap option.
7 - Liverpool has potential in teh back - Johnson at 6.4 has great attacking potential with a decent CS chances - thou next two fixtures are brutal.

    thats about it.

will you go with one heavy hitter in the back? two? three? which?

I've been thinking about it lately too. I've had Baines the whole season, I don't think he's worth it overall. Zab is the stand-out if you ask me, he's been excellent in terms of attacking output and City has the best defense. I'm thinking Zab/Nasty + 4 cheapies, although Sagna could prove decent value at 5.1. ShawX NOT worth it, Johnson is nice though after his next two.

To answer your question, going with one or two mid-priced (6-ish).

We've already signed Wallace, the 18 year old. That means we have 4 RBs (counting Ferreira and Iva), don't think we'll sign another, even though Wallace doesn't arrive until summer.

Defence doesn't look too bad. You can play nasti and Davies every week while rotating the other three. When Wilson comes back for injury you could ship him in for one of your 4 mil players and you've got 3 decent picks at the back

Wildcard dilemmas are slowly getting resolved, down to two key questions now:

    - who is my one expensive defender?

Running Glen Johnson through the comparison tool over last six weeks and over whole season against Gibbs, Zaba, Nasty, Rafael, Ivanovic, even Evra yields some pretty encouraging results. Despite two tricky games coming up I think he's the man for me.

    - Fellaini and Pog or Fletcher and Punch (and a tiny bit of change)?

I could go either way on this one, but leaning towards the latter as I have accrued value in Punch and couldn't then change my mind and reverse it.

    Thoughts?

I'm surprised you're going for johnson over the likes of Zabaletta to be honest. I would also consider Enrique sometime down the track as a cheaper alternative to Johnson who should provide the same attacking threat.

Comparison heatmaps on chances created and (to a lesser extent) shots convinced me on Johnson over Zab, in addition to the raw figures, another factor is that I also have accrued value in Johnson,

From GW26 I definitely want Johnson. Could you can get someone for the next two and then switch? I think that's what I'll probably do, but haven't really looked at the fixture for the next two as of yet.

Fletcher & Punch, I think. I like Puncheon, he's been a good cheap guy to have. Plus that route gives you more flexibility to switch Fletcher to someone else around that price when his fixtures drop off.

It's nice to get advice on here, but at the end of the day, I would only listen to a handful of people who know what they are talking about. Most of the time you're opening yourself up to more confusion! It's harder to take a punt as most people are afraid to move away from the template teams. I prefer to read the articles to make judgements on my team.

True, but what would we discuss all week if we don't debate the merits of player a over player b? I do think that if our teams were kept private on the fpl site then this would help stop the amount of similar teams. But at the same time seeing your rivals team does make it interesting watching games were you have no players and your rival does. And also makes it interesting at 12 on a Saturday for the big reveal of your rivals team for that week and his captain choice

Partly. Yes, it should be about individual decisions, but you want to be as informed as possible before making decisions..so it makes sense to ask others!

Your point is well taken. However, the truth is that the 'template' team discussed on here is stunningly successful in the global scheme of things. Most FFS regulars are inside the top 10,000 - that's the top 0.5% of all FPL players. Pretty incredible.

Sort of. It is a fantasy football website, so nothing wrong with people wanting another opinion on their team etc., but I like to make my own mind up about my team, yes.

This is a fantasy site and of course teams will be discussed! silly me!
Does anyone get the urge to really BREAKAWAY and come up with an alternative team......what about

J Cole / Gerrard / Silva / Hazard/ Lennon across the midfield not a 'power 5' (hate the phrase, hate Noel Edmonds) in site....................could work!!!!!

Is N'Zogbia worth a WC gamble? Rotates very well with Pogster.

Why so? He has a decent 3.1 ppg, and that's value dfor the money. He's obviously bench fodder material most of the time.

Sounds like you would play him every 2nd week. You get 2 points for 60+ mins so 3.1 isn't anything fancy.

Do you guys think Ba is a lock to start the next game? Chelsea tend to do better away from home and Reading gave up alot of shots to Newcastle. Chelsea could really do damage there if Ba starts.

You're forgetting the Brentford game in between. Ba will get SWA and RDG IMO.
