A 5-0 home hammering of Norwich last Saturday helped Liverpool to their biggest win of the season as Brendan Rodgers handed Daniel Sturridge his first league start as the lone forward. The former Chelsea man vindicated his manager’s decision by registering his third goal in as many games and while his inclusion saw Luis Suarez drop deeper, the Uruguayan also found the net and collected the maximum Fantasy Premier League (FPL) bonus points against the Canaries:

Second only to Robin Van Persie in the FPL standings this season, Suarez’s new role may have many anticipating a downturn in Fantasy potential – as a result, we cast an eye over the statistics to ascertain whether a more withdrawn berth could prove detrimental to his long-term prospects.

Suarez Av Pos
Liverpool Average Positions Vs Norwich 2013

Looking at his average positions over the season so far, Suarez definitely played deeper when in possession (above left) against Chris Hughton’s outfit, with the vast majority of the previous Gameweeks seeing him further forward. Everything, however, is relative here – Suarez (7, slightly obscured by Fabio Borini’s 29) remained the most advanced starting forward when on the ball at Anfield (above right), with Sturridge (23) averaging a deeper position when in possession; a positive sign for the Uruguayan’s 30% FPL owners that the latter’s arrival won’t harm his ability to produce in the opponents’ final third.

Question is, then, how did this affect Suares’z overall Opta statistics?

Suarez GW1-22 Versus Suarez GW23

Suarez had marginally more touches in the opposition half on Saturday compared to his previous average over the course of the campaign, registering 62 to 58, while his touches in the final third took a very slight dip – down from 45.1 to 43. His overall involvement was boosted as the Reds looked to get him on the ball as much as possible, increasing from a previous 1.4 minutes per touch to 1.2 against the Canaries; again, this is backed up by 28 passes received in the final third compared to 24.3 beforehand. Suarez also made more successful passes in the final third, up from 16.1 to 19 in the 5-0 rout.

Suarez GW 23432819103253118.6
Suarez GW 1-2245.124.316.112642.815.734.1

In terms of dribbles, Suarez’s stats were pretty much identical – his total of 10 attempted at the weekend was in line with 9.6 per appearance from Gameweek 1-22. His touches in the box did decrease, though; prior to Saturday, he averaged 12 but this slipped to 10, while his number of goal attempts plummeted – a previous total of six shots per appearance dropped to three, and this also applies to his efforts from close range, which moved from four shots in the box down to two. On the upside, his creativity rocketed – Suarez created five goalscoring opportunities from his role in “the hole”, a significant improvement on his previous 2.8 over 22 matches for the Merseysiders.

In short then, Suarez’s goal attempts basically halved against Norwich, slipping from 15.7 minutes per effort to 31 minutes on Saturday, while his assist potential more or less doubled, up from 34.1 minutes per chance created to 18.6. While a single game is not enough to cause too much alarm, there’s a definite indication his new role has the potential to alter Suarez’s output.

Suarez Versus Sturridge

Looking at Sturridge’s stats from his 69 minute appearance in Saturday’s game, it’s clear his interpretation of the lone forward role differs from that of Suarez. Liverpool are looking to involve Sturridge far less in the overall build-up play – he had almost half the number of touches than Suarez in the final third at the weekend (23 to 43), a tally which is also virtually half Suarez’s previous 45.1 as the most advanced forward. An average of just 1.8 minutes per touch indicates Sturridge is content to allow Suarez possession and make himself available via runs off the opposition back-four, with his movement affording his strike partner more space to play in.

Tchs Final 3rdPass Rcvd Final 3rdSucc Pass Final 3rdTchs Pen BoxShotsShots in BoxChances CreatedMins/ShotMins/Chance Created
Sturridge GW 23231616343017.3N/A

Intriguingly, Sturridge had just three touches in the opposition box – while this was significantly less than Suarez on Saturday (and a quarter of the Uruguayan’s previous average), the former Chelsea man’s eye for goal is all too apparent; all three of those touches resulted in a shot at goal. Sturridge had more shots than Suarez both overall (four to three) and in the box (three to two) suggesting that, while he may feature significantly less in the build-up, his threat could mirror his team mate’s.

It’s telling, however, that Sturridge didn’t create a single scoring chance on Saturday – an indication that, as their partnership clicks, Suarez is still likely to offer greater all-round potential compared to Sturridge’s pure goal threat. Nevertheless, with a FPL price tag of 7.4 to the Uruguayan’s 10.5, the new boy is certainly staking a claim for our Fantasy attentions – three goals in 169 minutes in all competitions has turned heads, too. Granted, the next two matches (ars, mcy) are far from enticing but by the time Gameweek 26 comes around, Sturridge is likely to have built up full match-fitness and will be capable of lasting the full 90 minutes – a superb run of fixtures from that point on is likely to present both forwards to maintain their flourishing form, if Saturday’s display is anything to go by.

    GOALKEEPERS

If your planning on the age old tradition of a rotating pair the I advice you read this.

    Firstly, it is essential that you pick Szczeney or Begovic(though only if you bought cheap). The reasons for this are threefold;

    1) High potential for points in the rest of the season
    2) Excellent value, though this depends on purchase price in Begovic's case
    3) High Standard deviation of scores

Further explanation of the final point is required. Standard deviation defines the spread of the data, ideally for a rotating keeper you want a grouping of really high scores and some really low scores. This is best as it means that you are not benching valuable points.

Mignolet is not a potential rotation partner as a large part of his appeal is dow to his high number of save points, this means that whenever you are benching him you are losing a lot of points. Al-habsi has the same issue. However, this does mean that as a non rotating pick these two are very good options.

Jaask and Foster deserve a mention, if you have faith in their ability to pick up clean sheets then they will also offer a strong candidate for lead rotation keeper. I will not suggest them however.

Howard is unfortunate to be so highly priced. De Gea offers little value, especially in comparison with ManU defenders.

For the record a pairing of Szcz & Bego gets a value rating of 5.42, (bego priced at 5.2). This compares to a rating of 6.0 for Szcz & a non-playing 3.9 keeper. Szcz & Fed comes in at 5.7, so could be the best option.

For AK- as you can see I am not taking this approach lightly, and am still dealing with keepers.

Its also fair to say my dissertation has not progressed today.

I see, how about Mignolet though? Mignolet and Federici? What's the rating? I kind of want to limit those transfers to 5 as I obviously don't want to take hits and get rid of RVP together.

5.22, Obviously in this case you are choosing to not rotate Mig and only have Fed as back up.

For the record I think Fed is the best back up to have.

Surely. I don't think having Mignolet is a problem right now, with those fixtures, when I'm not really looking to rotate him. The only short term problem would be his game against Arsenal at home, while Reading would have Stoke away in the same week, so it really doesn't look like a problem. A short term one at least.

De Gea on his own has a value of 9.0. However, he is not alone, so the cheapest you can get him for is 9.4, especially as he suffers from a distinct lack of cheap rotators. This gives a value of 5.3.

              Defenders predictions, (which takes into account paying time);

              Evra--------- 7.97
              Rafael------ 7.82
              Vidic-------- 6.75
              Evans J---- 6.91
              Ferdinand- 5.67
              Jones------- 3.32
              Smalling--- 2.75
              Buttner----- 0.67
              Keane M-- 0

As you can see 5 defenders offer better value, although arguments could be made that they are rotating with a cheaper defender too.

I agree I have learnt the hard way not rotate Migs. I have Bunn to go with him not to rotate but only because there are 2 back-to-back games (MNU, che) where I'd really feel uncomfortable playing Migs as I don't think save points could compensate for what could be hidings. Bunn has nice fixtures those 2 weeks.

it's a cash issue mainly, as the cheapest route into the Reading defence is 3.8, the cheapest for Norwich is 4.1. This is an increase of 0.6 overall. The only real way I could fund that is by swapping Zaba to Nasty. But based on what you are saying, do you really need a playing keeper with Migs, since you're saying play him every week regardless of fixture, why do you need a 2nd playing keeper anyway?

That depends on the players own risk taking. You are potentially going to get injuries. Would you rather be forced with your free transfer or pay a little more for security. This is the very essence behind insurance companies. If you didnt have to get car insurance, would you still do it?

I think it's that he gets lots of 3s and 4s (from save points) spread over home and away games. What you want is someone who gets 6s every home game and 1s every away game (if you're rotating).

Me 66 points, him 45 points

Both have Walcott (c), Gibbs and Jaask - so they cancel each other out, but remaining players are:

    Me: Demel
    Him: Obrien, Nolan, Cazorla

    RMWCT draft #6

    Mignolet-Bunn

    Demel-Davies-Zabaleta-Pearce-Rafael

    Michu-Walcott-Fellaini-Mata-Puncheon

    Sturridge-RVP-Fletcher

    £ 2.1M

    1) Thinking of switching Rafael>Evra, his attacking has been amazing this season. Surely he can just go on and on?
I don't see any other areas I could use the 2.1M... Have tried to squeeze Aguero in, but it didn't work..
Then maybe use the remaining 1M to upgrade Bunn?

Any thoughts at all are appreciated! 🙂

Current thoughts on a WC team:

    Begovic, Federici
Evra, Zabaleta, (rotating three of Dawson, Davies, Demel)
    Fellaini, Walcott, Mata, Bale, Michu
    Van Persie, Fletcher, Sturridge

Any thoughts? Could be a benching dilemma in the front 8 I suppose.

Certainly a good looking midfield, but Mata Walcott Fellaini Bale and Michu make up the big 5/P5 for a reason.

I'd cringe everytime Chelsea Arsenal Swansea Everton and Spurs played with none of them.

good time i would downgrade one of the defenders, zabaleta imo, and get sturridge and/or upgrade pog with a more usable forward as sunderland are sunderland and i think will be highly risky to use fletcher almost all the time. sturridge on the other hand with 0.4 more expensive could be used all the time imo

Ok so for now I have settled for this WC team considering the low team value I have.
    Begovic/Bunn
    Nasti/Sagna/Davies/Clyne/Fabio
    Normal boring big 5: Mata/Michu/Fellaini/Bale/Walcott
    RVP/Sturridge/Pog

plan is to rotate Clyne/Fabio/Davies, and Pog will never play.
Question is , How long is Ruddy out for? Is Bunn worth a punt? or should i just be safe and go with Federici?

I really wanted to have Sunderland Coverage, and Remy in the mix.. but I guess you can’t have everyone!
Thoughts are welcome and team is linked!

    Which DF selection is better?

    A: 3 expensive .... Zabaleta - Rafael - Gibbs - Davies - Demel
Doubt for when I would have confidence to drop the expensive on bench and play the cheap 😕

    B: 2 expensive .... Zabaleta - Gibbs - Cameron - Demel - Pearce
Keep playing Zaba and Gibbs plus good rotation between the three.
