And so it begins – Newcastle have accepted a club record fee reported to be in excess of £35 million from Liverpool, a new record for the club and a fee that will make him the most eighth most expensive player in the history of football. This comes after the Newcastle Number 9 handed in a transfer request which was accepted by the Magpies after the club had previously turned down two Liverpool bids for their top-scorer.

An official statement on the Liverpool website reads:

“Liverpool FC confirmed this afternoon that Newcastle United had accepted a Club record offer for the transfer of Andy Carroll. The Club have been given permission by Newcastle to discuss personal terms with the player, who will now travel to Liverpool for a medical.”

Carroll is currently valued at 6.2 in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) game and has been a revelation this season with a return of 113 points, including 11 goals, 6 assists and 18 bonus points. He has been one of the most owned players in the game and, even though he has missed the last four Premier League games though injury, 30.9% of Fantasy Manager have kept him in their squads.

The striker has recently been in Sweden seeing a specialist because of his aforementioned thigh injury and, if terms are agreed and the medical passed, he will not be expected to make his Liverpool debut against Stoke on Wednesday (February 2) or even Chelsea on Saturday (February 6). Carroll’s first Liverpool outing would most likely come in the fixture with Wigan on February 12.

Carroll will form a new look partnership with Luis Suarez with Fernando Torres’ departure to Chelsea now looking inevitable.

johnfinlay John swears he'll deliver unbiased Fantasy Premier League tips and news...until Leeds get promoted.

First year playing FPL for me so unsure about this question. Can they change players values during the season? i.e could Adam and Caroll go up now they are (or should be) playing for Liverpool? and could Torres go down now he plays for a worse club?

Yeah but Torres won't play against Sunderland and then might be stuck out in the Anelka position for Chelsea. Adam's value comes entirely from the fact that the bonus point judges can't name another Blackpool player.

Good news for those who kept faith in Carroll, I guess.

Are the masses going to jump on him desipte the injury? Probably.

Are the FPL managers who'd make that move clued-up enough to wait till he's fit to play? Maybe.

So when's the inevitable surge in price going to be?

It most certainly is. They will want to have trained at with their new team mates and had a short rundown on the system of their new team before they're starting I think.

You can't include a clause like that in a contract, it would have to be a gentlemen's agreement and I don't see Chelsea accepting that.

I might be very wrong here- but wasn't there a clause in Andy Cole's move that he couldn't play against Newcastle in their next meeting (which was a week or so later)?

I don't know to be honest MNL, I don't remember.

I don't think the former employers can tell Chelsea what to do with their player though. Read about a similar situation somewhere but forgot the link.

The reported fee of £50m would make the Spaniard the most expensive footballer in Britain, beating Carlos Tevez's £47m move to Manchester City in 2009.

Musings on the main transfers so far...

Torres - I think he'll be an asset to Chelsea. No more 4-5-1 or 4-4-1-1 formations being the lone and sad striker. Plus, the flexibility of the way Chelsea play, means they'll always be a bunch of blue shirts around him. No chance to get lonely and sad. He might even smile.

Carroll - Liverpool are taking a punt on the raw material. But it's the raw materials they've bought that intrigue me - Strength, power and pace (over short bursts). Get him mixing with Suarez, Meireles and even Gerrard, on the training ground and his technical skills will improve. I think he'll be a success also.

Seriously big money for both players but only the future will vindicate whether the decisions were right or wrong. My gut says I'm in the right team. 😉
