Since Harry Redknapp acquired Rafael Van der Vaart from Real Madrid on the last day of the August transfer window, there has been a nagging doubt in the back of many a Fantasy Manager’s mind regarding a certain Tottenham-owned Welsh wing wonder. Opinion is pretty much split as to whether Spurs’ multitude of creative midfield options means Gareth Bale will predominantly take his place in the starting XI as a full-back or a flying winger.

Owned by an incredible 50% of Fantasy Premier League (FPL) bosses, Bale is the most popular player in the game, thanks, in part, to his performances in the latter stages of last season and a relatively cheap starting price this time round.

Redknapp has always stated he sees Bale’s long term future as a full-back and the young Welshman definitely offers Spurs more dynamism and creativity from deep than Benoit Assou-Ekotto. So far this league season, Bale has played three full games in midfield, two in defence, and one -against Wigan- where he started in midfield before moving back in the second-half.

So the key question is, how does the shift in position affect Bale’s performance and Fantasy potential? Let’s delve into the the Members’ Opta stats for further analysis.

Paul Is certain he won't make the same mistakes next season. Follow them on Twitter

Bale should be picked at the start of the season and left in, full stop. He's a left winger at a top 6 club who scores and gets assists, in some game, like the Telegraph one, he's listed as a defender. Spurs have sortedout their defence it seems so he'll get bonus points for clean sheets, making him an obvious choice, whatever the price.

But he isn't always deployed as a winger, and for 0.4 more you can get VDV, who has looked pretty good so far.

Hey guys how likely is it that A Johnson will start vs Newcastle?

He has voiced that he wants to start and that he likes to play against North East clubs and used to play for them as a 10-12 year old. Will this help his chances of starting?

Any City fans care to take a guess?

silva needs time to adapt to the premiership but hes got more skill and a far better touch then johnson

Yep, that's what it comes down to really. Plus Silva scored and played well in Europe at a time where City weren't doing it in the league, (0-1 Sunderland, 1-1 Blackburn), so Mancini wanted to change it.

Johnson played well in Europe and scored, at a time where City are winning, (2-0 Wigan, 1-0 Chelsea), so no need to change things, even if AJ is playing out of his skin.

The overriding priority for Man City is minimum 4th place in the premiership.
NOTHING will be allowed to deviate from that objective.
            The way I see it:

Tevez,Silva + Milner will start all PL games, all other fixtures: pick any 11 from whatever their squad size is.

Yeah, plus what is more embarrassing for Mancini? A young, upcoming guy being bled-in slowly, (AJ benched), or his £24m pound signing being left out every week, (Silva benched).

Captain is hard this week without a LIV or MCY player.

    Arteta - Nani - Bale - Malouda - Chamakh - Drogba......

Thinking Nani at the moment. though call as I dont want to (c) Drogba and sit and watch the match as I am a gunner.

Well then pick 3 Arsenal players, put them in your 1st eleven each week so that you can feel better, and watch as your team goes down the ranking table.

Alternatively, you could do what's best for your team and captain Drogba.

yeah but, taking a risk on gerard in a malfunctioning team is one thing DFD, but putting your captaincy on him too? thats like betting your whole wedge on one game. youre taking a risk spending so much if you have him, but that doesnt necessarily translate into an obligation to captain him if you just want a differential.

Sorry SD - you are lucky you don't own Gerrard. Tevez is a good shout, Im 50:50 between him and VDV at the mo.

lol its just better to have a second opinion if ur in a really tight league

not to forget that as a certain fan you woudlnt wana believe that ur teams nt gna do particularly well so its good to have a less bias opinion

Alcarez - home against shit and could score.
Carroll - away against strong a defence.
        Alcarez for me.

lol. whats with hating wee fat joe. class act he was. anyway, i've got a VDV stool sent to gillian for checking. if its no good i'll dump him (pun definately intended). i've stuck him in my team. bit of a risk i know but i'll see how it goes. played well midweek, looked eager.

Joe Harper...I can still see that smily Wee Bastard in my minds' eye!

Good luck GD11!! Let's agree to disagree on VdVs fitness; I'm convinced he's become a mercenary with little more to offer,

Am reluctant to post this but was Mark on the sauce when making those picks? Not a single attacking Chelsea player. At the Bridge. No Fabregas. No Vermaelen! Surely shum mishtake.

He tries to make it fairly realistic-ie not ram the picks with £10 mil+ players.

Given he had Torres and Tevez up front, sticking Malouda in was probably a big hitter too far.

Sorry, they're dreadful. Would you be happy to have that lot as your front 6? bale will probably play LB. Torres isn't exactly firing on all cylinders. I could go on.

No, the idea now is to try and NOT have players in the picks. Then you won't get a cursed gameweek like Akers!
