Since Harry Redknapp acquired Rafael Van der Vaart from Real Madrid on the last day of the August transfer window, there has been a nagging doubt in the back of many a Fantasy Manager’s mind regarding a certain Tottenham-owned Welsh wing wonder. Opinion is pretty much split as to whether Spurs’ multitude of creative midfield options means Gareth Bale will predominantly take his place in the starting XI as a full-back or a flying winger.

Owned by an incredible 50% of Fantasy Premier League (FPL) bosses, Bale is the most popular player in the game, thanks, in part, to his performances in the latter stages of last season and a relatively cheap starting price this time round.

Redknapp has always stated he sees Bale’s long term future as a full-back and the young Welshman definitely offers Spurs more dynamism and creativity from deep than Benoit Assou-Ekotto. So far this league season, Bale has played three full games in midfield, two in defence, and one -against Wigan- where he started in midfield before moving back in the second-half.

So the key question is, how does the shift in position affect Bale’s performance and Fantasy potential? Let’s delve into the the Members’ Opta stats for further analysis.

Paul Is certain he won't make the same mistakes next season. Follow them on Twitter

    Albrighton or Carroll?

I'm struggling quite badly this week to decide on an 11.

Usually I can bang it out the night after the gameweek ends, but not this time...

What do you make of this team for the weekend:-

    Foster

    Alex, Gohouri, El-Mohammady

    Arshavin, Malouda, Bale, Yaya

    Tevez (c), Drogba, Carroll

    Subs: Koncheskey, Givet, Albrighton

I don't really want Arshavin, brought him in as a replacement for Fabregas. 2.2m spare.
Is it worth taking a 4pt hit to do: Arshavin -> Nani

I think it's worth it, yes. Arshavin will get 2 points, and Nani should grab an assist and a bonus. Long term better too.

Arsh has chances to score every game, I'm sure he can easily score against Chelsea as well.
Anyway, Sunderland at home are very strong, I don't see a lot of sense to buy Nani just for a GW. Wait a week, save a transfer and get Fabs back next GW. Arsh isn't a bad option.
Arsh to Nani for 4 points hit is a bad idea I think.

    Torres: BLP eve BLA
    Tevez: NEW blp ARS

Form says Carlos, fixtures say 'Nando.

It's been bugging me all week. It doesn't help that they are both in the Scout Picks and Dream Team on Total FPL.

one of the golden rules prevalent in here is

'never double up on defenders from one team'

this season however dann+foster seems to go un-commented?

thoughts on why this specific combination is alright?

yeah, i've heard this a lot, too, but think that if the defenders are ok, may as well get them.

B'ham are unbeaten at home for over a year and a lot of that is because of dann-johnson combination. It's dangerous but works.

A back THREE from the same team would be ace if they kept a clean sheet all season and weighed in with goals, assists and baps. Brum will get the bad press when they start conceding more.

The guy who captained Vaughan probably didn't lose out at all anyway. If he didn't go with Vaughan, then the other decent options in his team were Drogba and Nani, and he could easily have gone for Drogba due to his form, who returned the same 2 points, so he got away with it.

didn't captain him last week. the matchup didn't call for it. His record against Arsenal can't be denied. And he's at home where most of his goals come. It would be a big risk captaining anyone else this GW

It still annoys me that FPL have not changed the Wolves assist from Fletcher to Edwards. They probably won't change it now, despite me emailing them and getting no reply.

I haven't seen the replay, but Applebonkers is adamant that it was Edwards who got the assist and I believe him. At the end of the day, surely Fletcher would have been in the box waiting for the cross, not out on the wing playing a short pass to Jarvis.

With bonus point cock-ups, they can get away with it as BP's are subjective. With goals and assists though, they are black and white decisions. What are they doing over at FPL towers, surely part of what they do at the weekend is to watch every goal in pain-staking detail to ensure that they have awarded the goals and assists correctly...

1min 53 secs, a blonde guy with white boots plays a 1-2 with jarvis then runs into the box and is inches away from getting onto jarvis' cross which misses everyone and goes in. blonde guy with white boots who almost gets the touch to score himself = david edwards

Why aren't they changing it? It's ridiculous. I have neither player so do not care from a personal point of view, it's more the principal, and the fact that they could make other mistakes later on that do effect things.

They didn't take Eduardo's 'goal' off him when it touched Eboue on the line when Arsenal were at home to Pompey or someone at the start of last season.

it's annoying. fletcher got 3 points for standing in the area away from the action. i guess not enough people kicked up a fuss for them to care, plus bbc text said fletcher assist and apparently fpl and bbc share the same source of info. it's very annoying but unfortunately is a mistake that will be there for good. the fact no one else noticed shows how easy it was for them to cock it up.

calling all blackburn fans - is Emerton now a decent 5th midfielder at 4.3? If he's likely to start then he could be a great option to free up some cash to upgrade others

Is it worth the extra 0.2 or 0.3 when you can get someone like Albrighton/Routledge etc and these guys should at least get a few assists over the course of the season, maybe 6 - 8 assists each.

Is there no other way you can free up the cash? I don't like the idea of buying a 4.3 mid, or a 3.8/3.9 defender like some mini-league rivals do to maximise the cash they free up. I want 15 capable players in my team, not 13 or 14.

I agree, 15 regular starters is optimal, but a dirt cheap option 15th choice who gets regular game time and chips in with some sneaky points can be quite handy when looking to strengthen your core squad

True, but the problem with pr*cks like Emerton, what are the odds that you just happen to play him in the one or two weeks a season that he does something? I would say pretty low, and not worth all the 1's and 2's he will give you.

Plus he's not nailed on, and I hate having players that I have to worry about their starting place going into each weekend.

agreed - he'd be 3rd sub most weeks and I'd be very lucky if he stepped up in the same week he scored but I'm still finding myself drawn to a 4.3 midfielder with proven premiership pedigree, albeit mainly of the chum variety

Elmo is the longest for a CS by far. Unless you think he is a decent chance for an assist then probably him.

Most of us played the WC when it was more useful. 😛

If uv alreay played ur wc it's an absolute waste in my opinion. stupid doing it to build team value when you dont know if players will be injured in future etc. You'll regret it when you have 2 players suspeded an 4 injured Or something along those lines. That's when you need it

I have changed captains no less than 10 times in the last day.

Gerrard or Drogba is the question I ask?

I just have a feeling that I'm going to get this one wrong and get burned hard.
