A first win in six, a first clean sheet in eight – West Brom turned up at Anfield and failed to read the double Gameweek script. Steven Gerrard’s missed spot-kick compounded an evening of the unexpected, as Ben Foster’s inspired performance frustrated Liverpool and Fantasy managers alike. Here’s the Stock Check on Monday’s events…

On the Up

Ben Foster
A simply outstanding display by the Baggies stopper, capped by a stunning save from Steven Gerrard’s spot-kick. This was a first clean sheet in eight for Foster, a first away from home. With fixtures brightening for Steve Clarke’s side, we may yet see Foster build on tonight’s performance and start to attract Fantasy interest.

Gareth McAuley
The opening goal from McAuley, his second strike of the season, underlined his credentials as the luxury item in the West Brom defence – a proposition that has tempted few given their poor record of late. Like Foster, however, tonight’s returns may well earn him attention, particularly with the schedule presenting further opportunities for shut-outs in the coming weeks.

Romelu Lukaku
The big Belgian started the game on the bench as Steve Clarke bolstered his midfield with the return of Youssouff Mulumbu. Shane Long kept his start, then, but was overshadowed by the cameo role played by Lukaku late on. An early warning saw the Chelsea loanee threaten the goal, breaking from inside his own half, only for him to seal the victory with a superb first touch and calm finish just minutes later.

Going Down

Steven Gerrard
It’s harsh on Gerrard given Foster’s outstanding save, both from his second half effort and his penalty. Having said that, such is the competition for places in our midfields, failure to register points at home to Swansea on Sunday will surely see Gerrard suffer significant sales ahead of the Gameweek 27 blank, as the clamour for Gareth Bale, Theo Walcott and Juan Mata continues to build .

Luis Suarez
Brendan Rodgers decided against risking Daniel Sturridge, assuring us that “he should be okay” for Sunday’s meeting with Swansea. Suarez shifted back to a central attacking role, then, only to put on one of his least effective performances in memory. While Suarez won a rather dubious spot-kick, he contributed little else as the West Brom defence coped admirably with his movement and close control; an eighth booking of the season only compounded the frustration for Suarez’s owners.

The Liverpool Defence
They had look such a strong proposition ahead of home clashes with West Brom and Swansea and yet, following tonight’s setback, Brendan Rodgers’ back four have now conceded six goals in their last three. With a confident Swansea at Anfield on Sunday, suddenly our expectation of returns from the likes of Glen Johnson have taken a dent.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

Since Mancini's promised 'big changes' and we've already seen 3-5-2 tried with dubious results I'd speculatively suggest another system he could try - diamond.

    ---------------Hart
    Zabaleta Lescott Kompany Clichy
    ---------------Yaya
    ------------Silva Nasri
    --------------Tevez
    --------Aguero-----Dzeko

Zab and Clichy provide the width. The diamond with Silva in the middle addresses City's lack of central passing. Tevez links midfield and attack with his energy. Yaya provides a reliable (translation: not Barry) holding role and carries the ball out of defence as he's infinitely better qualified at that.

When Zabaleta and Clichy are attacking Yaya can also drop into defence so he becomes a third CB and they're effectively playing 3-4-1-2 just like AK suggests above.

If you don't want to play all three strikers, Silva plays at CAM in place of Tevez, Yaya moves up into central midfield alongside Nasri and Barry (ugh) or Milner replace him at CDM.

    Just an idea anyway.

I bet Yaya can't play CDM. He's a CM, who can play as CAM but not a CDM I think. Nasri has just looked.. Well.. Shite at City. I just can't think beyond a 3-5-2 right now tbh.

He's kinda played that here and there , their main problem IMO is put simply
' Teamwork ' , they got lucky last year as they hardly knew each other but now 1/2 years on basically they can't stand each others guts and the only resolution is a revolution - ie the Mercanerys and the manager to leave IMO.

It does on the flanks, they do fill up the centre though so break up opposition passing. Would count on Zab and Clichy to be responsible, not too unlikely, for the former at least.

End of the day it seems to have escaped the notice of most that united have been playing the diamond at points throughout this season. But you're right, they conceded a few as well.

The most important thing for us in terms of our FPL teams is he said he'll drop players not ready to fight. That sounds like Milner's in the team for the short term at least.

Its typical to see the mercenaries lose heart. It doesn't matter how good you are, if you don't have heart you won't be giving your all for the team. It will be interesting to see who Mancini leaves out in future.

Javi Garcia needs to be in there. Yaya can't do that job on his own. Get Nasri out of there, move Yaya to his position and play Garcia as the CDM. That is a decent side.

Imo that midfield has way too little defensive power.
They will get overrun time and time again because Silva + Nasri simply cannot defend. I'd say same formation with Barry + Milner instead of Silva + Nasri and have Tevez do what Tevez does best --> chase the ball.

Not only is he covering the whole of the area between the back 4 and front line, he's also covering the flanks when Zaba and Clichy attack.

    Begovic, Bunn
    Zabaleta, Evans, Azpilicueta, Davies, Wilson
    Bale, Mata, Walcott, Michu, Fellaini

Gonna repost this one , my summary of yesterday :
The ironic thing about all today’s blab about the Pope resigning before Roman pushed him , Odemwinky arriving at the Vatican in Classic ‘ Arry style – ” The Boy got mixed up , hes really a triffic lad
and the hilarious Sturridge Saga -it’s just an international injury / will he pass fitness test ? / what are the tweets,Liverpool Echo saying / Did anyone talk to his mother / is he really driving a Hyundai ? And all that…
We forgot how Unreliable Liverpool are , why did we presume they would win this easy ? It’s not like United here winning 21 from 26 , all GJ/Enrique/Gerrard/Henderson(lol)/ Suarez/Studgegate had to do was turn up – more like Graham Taylor style in fact – Turnips !
Tbf I can’t say I heard anyone scouts/regulars/lateriser/JK/moi talk up West Brom,
Surely Captain Hindsight has seen it ? Dharma initiative seems to quiet all day and the regulars talked about how 100 was gonna be a ‘Decent’ score,
Luckily tho we have another bite at the Cherry and maybe Swansea will have an off day or Rodgers can enact a hair dryer episode – all we can do is wait and see.
Well done West Bromich Albion , I salute you and thank you for wrecking most on here game week thus far

    Silva or Hazard ?

    rest of the team is

    Bunn , Ming

    Zabaleta , Evans , Davies , Pearce , Clyne

    Mata , Michu , Bale , Walcott

    RVP , Sturridge , Pog

even if people will say get fellaini or jump at sissoko badwagon i just rate Silva and Hazard as much better options and since i can afford both of them i dont see reason why not to

if there wasn't possibility for blank i would have hazard 100%

but Silva fpl potential is just great and with Yaya returns he will be more advanced

can't wait to get rid my dgw punt Gerrard !

FPL wise yes but real life is a different cup of soup.

He's just gotta bring in the points, it doesn't matter how. If he's getting the shots and he's good at shooting I think you've got good value.

Big difference this year is he isn't 10m+ like other years. 8.4 or whatever makes him great value, he doesn't have to score quite as much as Mata, bale etc.

so if u had to choose 3, for them which 3 would u have?...
        baines, zaba, evra?

baines zaba azpi probably. or evra as a united defender i guess as the only player that would rotate with him is buttner who's played once this season... rafa and evans could both easily be rotated.

they won't have CL to play for for too much longer ;).

i am thinking of a WC without having a WC...
i think that with 5 transfers i can sort my team and take no hits for 4-5 weeks...

    going from into:

    mignolet, fed mignolet, fed
johnson, davies, dawson, demel, hughes Jevans, debuchy, dawson, demel, wilson
michu, bale, walcot, fellaini, mata michu, bale, walcot, fellaini, sissoko
suarez, sturridge, giroud RVP, aguero, giroud

    walcot becomes hazard after gw27.

if i had a WC, i would do it without hesitation. but i dont. so i can either grind it out slowly and suffer for 4-5 gws, or take the 16 points hit, brush it aside, and enjoy this game till the end.

stupid probably - but really tempting because this game is first and foremost about having fun.

always depends of performances of every players
if you need that players, and you think they could really score, do that

So...Michu and Fellaini owners who are thinking of bringing in Sissoko, here are my thoughts:

Initially, I was thinking bring in Sissoko for one of these two but here is what has changed my mind:
    1) Michu and Fellaini have both scored braces
    2) SOT sounds good for Sissoko but Southampton have looked good under their new coach so it might not be a walk over
    3) Michu (despite blank) and Fellaini both have decent fixtures for the next 2
    4) Sissoko is still unproven (although he has shown enough in my opinion)

    So what am I doing?
I'm going to assess these three assets over the next 2 weeks with Michu (blank, NEW) and Fellaini (nor, RDG) and keep a close eye on Sissoko (SOT, swa)
and I'll pick the two that are inform at the end of GW28.

Sound good? Thoughts? What is everyone else doing?

yeah, that's what i'm gonna do. bench michu now & play fellaini for the next 2. GW29 blank off goes fellaini and sissoko comes in, hopefully not a huge price rise for him prior to that.

Norwich have also been very tight at the back so my plan is to give Sissoko a chance this week, with a view to getting Fellaini back in for the Reading game.

I have learned to live with the fact that there is no way back for Michu this season and just hope I can still be top of my mini league at the end of the season without him.

Well, fantasy wise, that was a sorry affair, and no mistake. I'd been quite happy with my score, thinking all my lads have to do is turn up for a couple of games and I'll get 80 pts, and anything else is a bonus. Turns out I was very wrong, a booking for captain suarez and missed penalty for copilot gerrard did not get give me my easy 6 pts. 2 poxy points. Fortunately, it was an enthralling game and it's certainly hats off to the baggies.

Also, mysteriously, although my game week ranking fell 23k places, my overall rank actually improved by 12 places.

    Feedback on this team please.

    http://oi49.tinypic.com/287dl4p.jpg

I believe it is a strong team and i have chosen the RVP rooney tandem due to fixtures, consistency and haulage

    Would like other peoples opinion

    Cheers

Had Sturridge,Suarez, and Ben Foster (14) on the bench. Puncheon (7) comes on for Sturridge. Walked away with 76 points, so am I happy, yeah. Funny ol' game.

So if Sturridge plays on Saturday, Puncheon stays on the bench 😉

hey LR. looks like you've got it in the right place. I got an email asking me to moderate the comment... guessing the site's comment filters didn't like your presser for some reason. will give it a quick read through and then click approve

ahh i see why, whenever there are more than a couple url's in a comment it flags it.

good stuff!! :D. only complaint is no mention of any council members past (ENR) or present (berbilly, myself, etc) ;P.

What happens if a cup tie occurs?
Thus, to avoid this I need Sturridge to score more than 3 points.. :/

Still have top plan for it though in case it does happen. And its fairly likely that it will

Probably. I'll see what the deal is with those blanks first, but Giroud for Villa at home & the NL derby looks good to me.

Hmm. The short term punt idea isn't bad but I'm not sure its worth it. The alternative options have good short term fixtures as well.

Ok thanks, most keen on Giroud for the next two and some of the other suggestions after. But much can change in two game weeks...
