Liverpool fall flat in the first match of their double Gameweek after a smash-and-grab performance by West Brom at Anfield. Steven Gerrard misses a spot-kick, while Daniel Sturridge misses out entirely in a night to forget for the home side and Fantasy managers alike. Elsewhere, Hatem Ben Arfa could be set to return for Newcastle’s next league game, while Michu plays down fears of an ankle problem and insists he’ll be ready for next weekend.

Reds Attack Draws Blanks
With Daniel Sturridge ruled out with a thigh injury, Steven Gerrard and Luis Suarez carried the hopes of many heading into last night’s match. Gerrard had been acquired by over 160,000 Fantasy managers after scoring or assisting in 10 of his previous 12 and had racked up 45 points in his last four at Anfield. Suarez had been picked up by more than 146,000 after racking up 33 points in his last three home clashes – with both players transferred in for the likes of Gareth Bale and Robin Van Persie by many, plenty was riding on their displays. Gerrard fluffed the chance of producing points for both, missing a spot-kick late on after Suarez was felled in the box; a double blow for those who had both and left Gerrard without a single point. Fantasy owners of the pair can only take solace in their abovementioned form and hope the weekend won’t bring about another dire display in a double Gameweek that has the potential to go down as one of the biggest disappointments in memory.

Reds Defence Capitulates
Again, the same applies to Brendan Rodgers’ backline. Liverpool were subject to significant investment going into the weekend and with every reason, too – they had conceded four goals and registered seven clean sheets in their previous seven games at Anfield. With 10 minutes left on the clock, their backline looked like affording us the one crumb of comfort; Steve Clarke’s side didn’t have a single shot on target until Gareth McAuley opened the scoring with nine minutes remaining. Owners of the likes of Glen Johnson and Jose Enrique will be buoyed by the fact that Swansea have failed to score in five of their last six away matches, though given last night’s result, we clearly won’t be counting our chickens.

Baggies Resilience
With a single clean sheet in their previous 15, it’s fair to say that Fantasy faith in West Brom’s assets was hardly sky-high heading into last night’s match. Given that all five of their clean sheets had arrived at the Hawthorns, Clarke’s outfit seemed incapable of keeping out the Reds but thanks to the heroics of Ben Foster, they registered a crucial win to arrest a run of form which had harvested a single point in the previous six Gameweeks. While Foster’s spot-kick save and two bonus points helped deliver a 14 point FPL haul, Gareth McAuley’s second goal of the season earned the centre-half 15 points as the Baggies turned in a defiant display. With home games against Sunderland and Swansea in the next three, they’ll be hoping to maintain their winning ways.

Lukaku’s Consistency
A run of five straight starts came to an end for the giant Belgian as he dropped to the bench, with fit-again Shane Long leading the line once more. Lukaku highlighted his capabilities as a late sub, though, notching for the third time from the bench this season to take his tally to 10 goals overall. Lukaku has now scored or assisted in five of the last six, despite his side’s recent toils – although last night’s 17 minute cameo served a reminder of his potential for points from the bench, Lukaku has been far more reliable as part of the first XI. He has produced attacking returns in eight of his 11 starts – Long has produced in eight of his 17 starts by comparison.

In Other News
Newcastle are hoping to have both Yoan Gouffran and Hatem Ben Arfa back in contention for their Gameweek 27 home clash with Southampton on February 24. Scans on the former’s leg problem, sustained in the weekend loss at Spurs, have proved particularly optimistic, while his compatriot could also be set for a return, having played once since Gameweek 12 due to a hamstring injury. Speaking to the press yesterday, Alan Pardew revealed:

“You’d like to think with him (Gouffran) on one side, Ben Arfa on the other side and Sissoko and Cissé – blimey, that’s mouthwatering for us. I think there’s a possibility Hatem will be back for the next home game.”

Judging by Pardew’s comments, it also seems he plans to keeps Sissoko in the advanced central role that has harvested two assists and a couple of goals in his first three appearances. With a hugely enticing run of fixtures on the horizon including home games against Southampton, Stoke, Fulham and Sunderland in the next eight, plenty of investment looks to be heading the Magpies’ way, with yesterday’s news merely boosting their potential as Pardew looks to engineer a climb up the table.

Michu has played down any fears over the ankle knock that forced him off towards the end of last weekend’s 4-1 win over QPR:

“I am feeling good right now. I had problems Monday, Tuesday and did not train – but I trained the rest of the week and was OK to play. I felt fine in the game but then with 10 minutes left I had a bang on my ankle. The game was finished so I asked to come off. There’s no problem it was just a precaution. It will not be a problem especially with Dubai to look forward to with good weather and a lot of sun; it will be good to relax, to train and to think about Liverpool and Wembley.”

With another five days before Swansea’s trip to Anfield, the Spaniard certainly has plenty of time to recuperate before another week-long rest take him to the Capital One Cup Final against Bradford. Given Liverpool’s display last night, his Fantasy owners will be confident of further points to come in the Gameweek as Michu looks to add to his current 18 point tally next Sunday afternoon.

Just to show how lucky I was yesterday you just have to take a look at my ranking prior and after the game. #10 before, and with no liverpool coverage (only Sturridge as captain) I was worried sick. Now I'm ranked #11.
I will not laugh at Suarez/Gerrard/Johnson/Enrique owners who were laughing at us Sturridge owners yesterday, because I know how horrible it felt when the line ups came out. But it worked out well for me, and hopefully he will revard us owners on Sunday. Good luck, everyone.

              The Brilliant Banana

Now, here are some things you may not know about the power of the banana …

              Banana Power
A banana gives a sustained and substantial boost of energy - that’s why they are a favourite choice for cyclists, footballers and other athletes looking for a quick source of carbohydrate. The riper a banana, the quicker it is digested and converted to muscle fuel. Athletes love to eat bananas before sport, at breaks during a tennis game, and to recover quickly from sport.

              Antioxidant power
Scientific research papers confirm that bananas have significant antioxidant power. One study showed that bananas reduced the oxidative stress in the blood and reduced the ability of LDL cholesterol (bad cholesterol) to be damaging. The prevailing view is that oxidised LDL plays a major role in the formation of plaques leading to heart disease, so anything that reduces this risk is good news. Another study showed the antioxidant compounds in bananas helped protect nerve cells, which in turn could help protect the brain from Alzheimer's Disease.

              Vitamin Power
The banana is the best fruit source of vitamin B6 (one small banana provides around a quarter of your daily needs; one big banana provides nearly half of your daily needs). B6 helps with the production of neurotransmitters including serotonin and gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA). The banana is also a wonderful source of vitamin C, along with modest amounts of the B group vitamins folate, niacin, riboflavin and pantothenic acid.

              Low Glycaemic Index
The average Glycemic Index of bananas is 52, less for under-ripe bananas as they have a higher starch content and a lower sugar content. A GI of 52 is classified as low, meaning that it doesn't cause high blood sugar levels. That makes the banana a good fruit choice for people with diabetes.
              Cancer fighter
Bananas contain lectins, which have been strongly linked to a reduction in the risk of cancer and potentially helpful in the treatment of cancer. Plant lectins are known to resist digestion and enter the blood stream intact. They can affect the growth and proliferation of cancer cells, and even cause their ultimate death.

Bananas can help reduce the risk of kidney cancer. Research on 61 000 Swedish women found that, of all the fruits, bananas gave the greatest protection against renal cancer. Women eating 5 bananas a week nearly halved their risk of renal cancer.

              Perfect pick-me-up
Carbohydrate snacks are very useful for bringing low blood glucose levels back to normal and help avoid the mid-afternoon slump often experienced at work. We can
control our blood glucose levels by snacking on high carbohydrate foods
every 2-4 hours to keep levels steady. Healthy carbohydrate snacks are very useful for clear thinking, improved memory and mood. Bananas are ideal, because of their low GI and zero fat level.

              Healthy Blood Pressure
This unique tropical fruit is extremely high in potassium and salt-free, making it perfect to beat blood pressure. Australian and international research show that a diet high in potassium and low in salt helps to keep blood pressure normal. Less than 1 in 10 people get enough potassium to reduce their risk of chronic disease, like stroke. That leaves a lot of room for high potassium foods like the banana.

              Healthy & happy insides
We all know that high fibre foods help keep you regular and prevent constipation. High in fibre, bananas included in the diet can help restore normal bowel action, without resorting to laxatives. A medium banana will provide about 10% of your fibre needs for a day.

              Weight control
You won't get fat on a banana. Bananas have a high satiety index, that is, they are very filling for the amount of kilojoules they provide. Imagine eating a medium sized serve of fries. Not particularly filling are they? Imagine eating four bananas at once. You would probably stop at one or two. Well, four bananas have the same number of kilojoules as a medium fries, yet so much more filling. If you are trying to maintain a healthy weight then eat plenty of fruit and vegetables and go easy on the fatty foods. As there is no fat in a banana it is almost impossible to get fat on a banana!

Now that you know a lot more about the health benefits of your favourite fruit, please tell your friends. And remember, leave bananas in the fruit bowl to ripen naturally. When you buy bananas, buy a mix of ripe and green bananas so you get a steady flow of ripe bananas. Lovely as they are you don't want them all becoming ripe on the same day!

Getting in GJ was a poor decision for me with Fabio in the team. Completely forgot that he would be ruled out in gw27 leaving me a player short.

              So many fails last night.
Suarez looks like fatigue has finally caught up with him. Agger was awful, at both ends. The full backs looked clueless when they crossed the halfway line, Enrique can't pass a ball in a straight line and Johnson often hesitates for that crucial moment that loses momentum.
Shelvey still looks a Championship player, at best.
It was the worst game I have seen Gerrard have ever and Lucas reverted to crab-like sideways passing that is fine when your midfield partner is playing well, but was pointless last night.

As the Sky commentator said, it really is two steps forward and one step back this season. Rodgers chose this week to talk up the chances of finishing fourth. Laughable really. He will be given time, I have no doubt, but his "project" looks in serious danger of derailment and in my opinion he should go all out in the Europa League now to try and scramble a little success from the season because we're going to finish no higher than seventh.

am i the only one who thinks suarez is overhyped? for me the most important aspect of a striker is his finishing. his conversion rate.

suarez needs 4-5 chances to score a goal and in games which are tight or close, you need your striker to be clinical. thats where i rate RVP alot higher and a level above suarez.

this aint a knee jerk to yesterdays performance but a general overview.

i personally think he is a striker who will always need 4-5 chances before scoring like andy cole. his shooting technique is nothing compared to the greats of world football like RVP,messi, ronaldo and co.

no point doing all the hard work and then missing a chance.

RVP has hit the woodwork more than Suarez this season. True, but meaningless.

Seriously though, RVP is clearly a better player to have in your team. But Suarez is capable of those moments of genius (like Berbatov) that RVP just isn't. They're not part of RVP's game.

I'm not sure if you think I'm arguing that Suarez scores more, or is a better player. I'm not.

RVP is clearly a better player to have in your team (I mean real team, not just fantasy). He scores with much more regularity and much more precision.

What I'm saying is that Suarez also has something to his game that RVP does not - moments of magic that very few other players can produce.

suarez has low centre of gravity and is skillfull. as a striker i prefer a predator who preys on one chance.

Jeepers! Why do you all keep thinking I'm arguing that Suarez is a better player, or a better match-winner? 😀

I agree - RVP is a better striker. RVP will win you more games. RVP is a better player.

I'm just adding to the conversation by stating something else about Suarez, something beyond the goals in the back of the net measurement. Something that relates to the entertainment value of football. I am not stating that the moments of magic make him a better player or make him the one you want to have in your team.

i aint disagreeing. some of his skillful movements and dribbles are great. but to me he is not a world class striker as everyone is talking about.

i will never rate him as one of the elite strikers. for me an elite striker must be a natural goalscorer. its the most important part for a striker.

These stats tells me everything I need to know about his ability as a striker. He's a good player of course, but they need a Sturridge to knock the goals in.

i will never rate suarez as world class until his compusure in front of goal improves. same way i never rated andy cole highly. i prefer strikers who are clinical in front of goal.

he wont. thats why i dont classify him as world class. finishing is a natural art. technique plays a big part in it. his shooting technique is poor

In terms of shots on target he's even regressed from last season. He's just having a lot more shots this season, hence more goals.

from a fantasy perspective what difference does it make how many shots he has, he is still the 2nd top scoring forward in fpl

because even when he scores 2 goals in a game he still ends up bapless as he misses 20 chances 🙂

but by the same token you could argue that if RVP's work rate was higher then he'd be out of sight for goals scored...I don't mind how many they miss as long as in the end the ball goes in the net...The only stat that matters...!!!

wakey - in tight games, you normally get one or two chances. you cant afford to miss 4-5 before scoring the 6th. the 6th chance may never come.

liverpool dominated game yesterday but lacked a natural predator. suarez is being hailed as worlc class striker. for me he is not.

Yeah...Mirallas....I have all the Belgians in my team that were in the prem at the start of the season and i don't shift them (10)...It's a bit back to front with all the money in Mids and defence...but three strikers were belgian so i'm stuck with them...I only transfer in the two defensive and midfield spots that aren't taken by belgians...Currently O'Brien/Davies/Bale/Walcott...

I'm going to take some comfort from last night in the fact that if there was no Dgw I would have captained Suarez anyway or Mata so it still would have been a rubbish week 🙂 And I also would have sold Michu so it's not all bad

Assuming there are no injuries, here is my team for next gw:

              Bego bunn
              Baines mariappa harte azp (davies)
              Bale mata walcott marveaux (gerrard)
              Rvp lambert (studge)
              0.7, 1FT

              What do I do?

              A gerrard to sissoko
              B davies to 5.1 def
C both for a hit (could get any defenderi wanted)

In a bit of a quandary, current team for gw27 is

              bego (turnbull)
zab - monreal - clyne - wilson (davies)
walcott - fellaini - bale - (michu, gerrard)
              le fondre - rvp (suarez)

              I praying that:
              1) wilson plays, and
              2) alf produces his magic either from the start, or as supersub

that still only gives me 10 players. So, which transfer gives you a warm glow (.3 in the pot)?

              a) gerrard ➡ silva
              b) gerrard ➡ hazard
              c) gerrard ➡ sissoko for a punt and bring in someone like fletcher/graham for alf for gw28
              d) gerrard, alf ➡ mata, pog (-4)
              e) suarez ➡ aguero

I am tempted by sissoko - it's that shiny new thing syndrome. And lambert has to be in the running. I had him earlier in the season and he was a bit hot and cold, but he is more consistent now... hmm

              Random question.

If your captain scores negative points, eg -3, are the doubled to give -6?

1 is what im looking for also.

Giroud will have a blank gameweek 29 more than likely
Cisse is a big risk, out of form
Lukaku is who im edging towards, but I think he cant play against chelsea in 2 weeks
