Any debate over whether Fernando Torres would start against his old club, score a goal or celebrate should he score were put to bed with a tepid performance by both himself and Chelsea.

The Blues were adjusted, as predicted by most informed pundits, by reverting back to the diamond formation so favoured in the early weeks of Carlo Ancellotti’s rein in charge. This saw Torres and Drogba paired up front with Anelka playing just behind, serving as the head of a diamond midfield. What was clear was that, whilst this provided success in the later stages of the game against Sunderland when trialed, against a well organised Liverpool team with three central defenders, Chelsea’s lack of width saw a serious lack of penetration.

It remains to be seen whether this was just a case of Chelsea coming up against a team who had been set up to combat the formation, or whether it is a formation which simply doesn’t serve to complement their current contingent of players. There is certainly a whiff of this mirroring the Shevchenko move whereby the Ukrainian was crowbared into a team with ultimately little success. I may be premature in my assesment but this looks like a formation which will take time for Chelsea to adjust to – time which, given their current predicament, they may not have.

In light of Chelsea’s FA Cup run and the effect a potential victory over Everton may have, namely cancellation of Gameweek 28’s fixtures against Manchester United, coupled with the lack of fluidity and certainty about Chelsea going forward, the Knee Jerks’ assesment is to hold fire on investment in Chelsea players (thats if you still have any of course). If you have Torres for example your head is surely going to be turned by the more reliable and more in-form Carlos Tevez and/or Robin van Persie.

One player that did catch the eye and followed up with recent goalscoring form was Liverpool’s Portugese midfielder Raul Meireles. Already picked up by a 5% of players (including Granville) he has been playing in an advanced position supporting the lone striker – in this game Dirk Kuyt. Obviously his returns could be affected by the introduction of Luis Suarez but his form in recent weeks, including 4 goals and 1 assist in the last 5 games, is hard to ignore at £7 million on the FPL game. A word of warning however is the fact that Meireles has never historically been a prolific goalscoring midfielder. This could well just be a purple patch and whether or not this can be sustained remains to be seen. His continued positioning behind a solitary striker, with Andy Carroll still injured, could provide the key for continued returns.

One thing is for certain – Liverpool, under Kenny Dalglish, are looking both a lot stronger at the back (4 clean sheets in the last 4 games), and a lot more fluid going forward.  There’s definately a feel good factor at Anfield since the return of King Kenny, something which can’t be said of Stamford Bridge in spite of the arrival of £50m Fernando Torres.

Hmmm might keep him then. I'd lose a fair wedge if I got rid, and I dunno if I'd be able to afford him back. Then again at this stage of the season I'm not sure Spurs have the best fixtures so maybe better options out there.

They have pretty decent fixtures. Their home games from 28, which are every other GW till the end, are WHM STK WBA BOL BIR.

Admittedly, they do have to go to City, Chelsea and Liverpool but those are mouth-watering games at WHL.

Maybe 70mins in one game of the DGW if you are lucky, but then he misses the next GW I think.
I think it might be time to lose 0.5 on him and go for a RVP,Walcott & Cesc punt and maybe pick him up again in a months time or so.

I think I'm going to stick with RVP. Last time I worried about a striker and midfielder from the same team it was Nani and Berbs for a DGW. I was worried that Berbs wouldn't play both games so captained Nani. Look how that turned out.

yeah true...have the same strikers myself. i think once i get huth in ill be very similar, i fancy him against the arsenal backline alot. I think i have to play vidic though, its gonna be a tight game and if he keps em out and its say, 0-0, hell likely get bonus

I'm leaving him in, they are in the most crucial part of their season with Chelsea losing and Liverpool now knocking at their doorstep, this is the game week to leapfrog them two places if they play their cars right. I'm swapping Meireles for either Arshavin or Walcott.

I have one free transfer and no moneys because I blew all on Torres... just like Chelsea 🙁
Anyway any suggestions as far as transfers go?
At first I was considering bringing Huth in for a 4 point hit but with VDV maybe being injured I'm all confused
    (P.S. team is linked)

I'm wildcarding so weighing up the benefits. Will probably go with Huth short term, Kolarov long term, but the cash I save on Huth could give me Lennon (+ Fabs + RVP) over Walcott (+ Fabs + RVP) this gw.

OK - but you might as well be hung for a sheep as a lamb, so if you fancy Walcott, go for it. Keep an eye on Everton and Citeh - I fancy Silva for my get out of jail GW 28.

              Silva's on my watchlist.

I could hold off on getting Cahill till next week, going with Walcott and Lennon instead, then getting Cahill in.

That would give me 4 outfield players missing GW28 (assuming...) which I'm not too keen on as it forces a transfer - one injury and I'm taking hits.

If I did this, I'd need to bench Bent or Tevez gw27...

Rafael to Kolarov I reckon. Man Utd + away games = lack of clean sheets

Maybe downgrade Hangeland or Huth to Walker to free up a little more cash and upgrade DJ to Saha or Bent.

Not sure they're urgent but possible ideas. I guess getting rid of the free scoring Huth and hangeland might not be up your street 🙂

Potential VdV replacements. I already have three Arsenal so am ignoring them, and with 8.9 to spend my candidates are:

    1) Tim Cahill
Pros - nice fixtures, generally at the centre of everything Everton do going forwward. Having a great season
Cons - jaded / in need of a rest after Asia Cup? No double GW27

    2) Mikel Arteta
Pros - again nice fixtures, I think he is improving the last couple of games, potential to start showing his form of last season
Cons - very risky, doesn't seem half the player of last year at times. No double GW27

    3) Stuart Downing
Pros - good fixtures, has exceeded expectations this season
Cons - already have Young, not keen on Downing as a player.

    4) Aaron Lennon
Pros - reasonable fixtures. Done well the last couple of games
Cons - Jamsiep picked him first - gale force smugness could erupt. Oh and he's Aaron Lennon.

    5)David Bentley
Pros - Lovely DGW27, should be on for a good score as he has been fairly impressive, pretty much nailed on to start both games too.
Cons - No game GW28 (but neither did VdV). He plays for Birmingham

    6) Kevin Nolan
Pros - Reasonable fixtures, scored well this season
Cons - New formation sees him deeper, not on pennys

    7) Joey Barton
Pros - Best English midfielder this season, on set-pieces and pennys
Cons - Is known to get the odd card occasionally.

Also considering Lee (Bolton), maybe Thomas (WBA)

Although I'm sure most of you know Arsenal and Bham have a DGW on GW 27 but no fixture after! :O And because you can't use your second wildcard after GW 27 don't forget you'll need a way out before you end up with Foster, Fabregas, Walcott and RVP all in your team, almost did that myself
