Any debate over whether Fernando Torres would start against his old club, score a goal or celebrate should he score were put to bed with a tepid performance by both himself and Chelsea.

The Blues were adjusted, as predicted by most informed pundits, by reverting back to the diamond formation so favoured in the early weeks of Carlo Ancellotti’s rein in charge. This saw Torres and Drogba paired up front with Anelka playing just behind, serving as the head of a diamond midfield. What was clear was that, whilst this provided success in the later stages of the game against Sunderland when trialed, against a well organised Liverpool team with three central defenders, Chelsea’s lack of width saw a serious lack of penetration.

It remains to be seen whether this was just a case of Chelsea coming up against a team who had been set up to combat the formation, or whether it is a formation which simply doesn’t serve to complement their current contingent of players. There is certainly a whiff of this mirroring the Shevchenko move whereby the Ukrainian was crowbared into a team with ultimately little success. I may be premature in my assesment but this looks like a formation which will take time for Chelsea to adjust to – time which, given their current predicament, they may not have.

In light of Chelsea’s FA Cup run and the effect a potential victory over Everton may have, namely cancellation of Gameweek 28’s fixtures against Manchester United, coupled with the lack of fluidity and certainty about Chelsea going forward, the Knee Jerks’ assesment is to hold fire on investment in Chelsea players (thats if you still have any of course). If you have Torres for example your head is surely going to be turned by the more reliable and more in-form Carlos Tevez and/or Robin van Persie.

One player that did catch the eye and followed up with recent goalscoring form was Liverpool’s Portugese midfielder Raul Meireles. Already picked up by a 5% of players (including Granville) he has been playing in an advanced position supporting the lone striker – in this game Dirk Kuyt. Obviously his returns could be affected by the introduction of Luis Suarez but his form in recent weeks, including 4 goals and 1 assist in the last 5 games, is hard to ignore at £7 million on the FPL game. A word of warning however is the fact that Meireles has never historically been a prolific goalscoring midfielder. This could well just be a purple patch and whether or not this can be sustained remains to be seen. His continued positioning behind a solitary striker, with Andy Carroll still injured, could provide the key for continued returns.

One thing is for certain – Liverpool, under Kenny Dalglish, are looking both a lot stronger at the back (4 clean sheets in the last 4 games), and a lot more fluid going forward.  There’s definately a feel good factor at Anfield since the return of King Kenny, something which can’t be said of Stamford Bridge in spite of the arrival of £50m Fernando Torres.

Never really watched a game of American football before (they call it football because?), but I'm going to give it a try with this super bowl. First thing that stuck me during the players loud and over the top entry to the pitch, some of them appear to be overweight. How could being overweight be a benefit in a physically demanding sport?

The big guys need their mass for head on blocking, rushing, and tackling. It's all brute force. The smaller/faster guys do the running, passing routes, and pass defense. Good luck making it through the whole game, it'll take about 4 hours with all the play breaks, penalties, time-outs, etc.

One thing you can say about the Superbowl, they put on a hell of a good show, even if it is majorly OTT.

Same as every year I expect, I'll start watching because I feel like I should as it's only once a year. Then be bored to death by the constant stoppage and probably not even make it until half time.

Not that bit so much as this last line
'....only a Geordie would try to pretend that it was not primarily Phil Dowd that got them their point from the game.'

They lost the game because they didn't have any leaders, any guts or basically the bottle to win it. They were awesome in the first half and awful in the second. Diaby was an utter moron and was really to blame for the collapse.
As for all this bollocks about Interpol - why did they rule out a perfectly good goal by Leon Best?

It's not that difficult. Arsenal are awful in the second half. Fans don't want to believe it's because the team are actually massive chokers, blame ludicrous twitter initiated gambling rumours. In fairness, at least it's more imaginative than blaming the pitch.

No, I don't for a second think that match fixing was anything to do with the result, hence my earlier post about Rosicky being a really shit choice to throw a game...

My only point here is that it isn't bitter Gooners at work whatsoever. It's the French equivalent of the BBC reporting this story. Where does the bitter Gooners angle even come into it?

I don't think Jamsiep is trying to say that. I think he's just pointing out that the investigation is a result of "bitter Gooners".

Personally, I believe that Newcastle's comeback is a combination of Newcastle being good, Arsenal being "chokers", and Phil Dowd making some rather disgraceful refereeing decisions. And all three factors were decisive in turning over a 4-0 lead. Remove any one of those factors and Arsenal win the game.

Were Dowd's decisions even that bad though Faulk?

The first penalty was a clear one. An absurd tackle from Koscielny, he didn't get anywhere near the ball.

Nolan was booked for his wrestling with Szczesny, and Dowd clearly told Diaby that he was being sent off for two incidents - on Barton and then Nolan - so a comparison between the two cases isn't really very accurate.

The second penalty wasn't one, but Best was an absolute mile onside for the goal he scored, so those two sort of cancel each other out.

Hey i can't stand the goons, what can i say. I mean Quaid can't. I'm his official spokesman, natch.

Notice when Utd lost yesterday SAF fully accepted Wolves were the better team (which they were). Chances of lemon sucking Wenger ever doing the same 0.00000001%. Bad pitches FTW!

Fair enough Attila, I didn't read as far as that....

But I genuinely don't think that Partridge understands what's going on here..... He seems to think that the Arsenal fans, so bitter at their draw yesterday, have created this story about match fixing and the referee cheating. Which isn't even close what has actually been said.

I'm not having that Koscielny penalty. If that's anywhere else on the pitch, it's not a penalty. yes, there's contact, but it's a contact sport. Koscielny doesn't obstruct or hinder Best in any way, nor does he do anything to make the forward go down.

I believe Joey Barton's challenge on Diaby was terrible, and certainly merited a yellow, if not a red. That tackle itself was clean, but then he pulls his leg back and throws himself onto Diaby's leg with the follow-through. Because he wins the ball everyone goes "oof good strong challenge," but it's two incidents, he tackles the ball, then tries to break Diaby's leg.

What Nolan did to Chesney was a red card offence, regardless of what happened with Diaby. If Dowd sent off Diaby for two incidents, why didn't he show him two yellows, rather than a straight red? that itself is pretty bad refereeing, as Diaby will now miss 3 games, rather than one. I'm not debating the Diaby sending off by the way, what he did to Barton was more than enough.

It's a pretty ridiculous claim though... Surely if you are going to throw a game, then you'd get someone other than Rosicky, i.e. a substitute midfielder, involved...

Although Rosicky did do a pretty good job of throwing the game away to be fair.

Anyone think it's worth a hit to do Djourou to R Johnson and VDV to Barton/ Nolan/Walcott? Would give me 10 dgw players. Or should I just get rid of one of Djourou and VDV to give me 9 dgws? Those injuries have really screwed up my wc team.

You have 4 attempts (downs) to try and gain 10 yards. If you get 10 yards then you get 4 more downs. The aim is to try and get a touchdown which is like a try in rugby. You also get points for kicking the ball between the posts, like in rugby.

Still sitting on my "anytime" wildcard trying to decide whether to use it for the gw27 doubles or keep it for a rainy day...
Somewhat complicated by the fact that I have 2 free trannies in the bank which will go to waste.

Need to decide tonight to catch any price rises if i'm gonna go WC.

        Suggestions please!

Being so high up yourself, it's hard to give advice from down here but I would think having a WC in the bank could seriously benefit you later on, eg if the two games are on in GW 28 after all and more players are injured.

Do I go all in on the gw27 doubles with the wilcard & hope to make the final push in to the top 50 or gamble on fewer double players & hope lots of them get rested & then strike in gw28 when many teams will have missing games & people will struggle to field a decent 11... mmm I can't decide.

Peter Odemwingie really is a Must Have this gameweek, surely?

The guy averages nearly 6 points per game at home, he's in the Forwards Top Ten for both overall points and points per game and his two games are against the teams who are currently neck and neck in the race to the Championship!

He's also on target for a midweek price rise with another likely to follow at the weekend.

        All aboard?

                    Really?

I would have put good money on a ridiculously angry Liverpool side squeezing out a result tbh...

Ancelotti should never have played Torres, he needed to stick with the tried and tested system.....

                      'tried and tested system'

Have you not been watching us play for the past 3 months? We annihilated Sunderland in the week playing a midfield diamond.

                        Yes, but not with Torres.

Also, was Anelka playing as an attacking mid today?

Yes, and I thought he was one of our better players.

Just seen that... Honestly not a clue what he's on about with that picture of a diamond....

And greghammer bagging 750 quid, wow!

Aha now I realise what he meant by that picture.

He doesn't like the diamond formation.

                        Ahhhhhhhh.....

That should have been obvious after having to put up with him moaning about it for hours on end this afternoon! 😉

It really should. I only realised after seeing you mention the formation above.

Could not work it out earlier for the life of me

It's incredible how many transfer rumours still invlove united, given we haven't made a big money signing since Berbagod..... 😛

(Valencia's 16 million is paltry in today's money)

After Carroll I wouldn't put anything past Ashley....

Actually I wouldn't have before, he is extremely wide.
