Another big double-gameweek is always a favourite of this scribe so is the opportune time to get back in the saddle and giving the fixtures what for once more as we look into who’s upcoming games scream in vestment and who’s upcoming games just leave you waking up screaming. It’s not all about double-gameweeks by any means though, pick up your Season Tickers and forage through the schedules as we “Frisk the Fixtures” for you again…

The Highs…

Everton

Their run of fixtures got good last week (evidently so as the Toffees managed to bag themselves five goals at home to Blackpool with Louis Saha king for the day, no iron mask for him) but it continues on for plenty of time to come yet. From gameweeks 28 through 31 in particular we’ll see David Moyes’ men have four consecutive home games in a row (SUN, BIR, FUL, AVL) as well as a double gameweek (Everton travel to Newcastle in the week they host Birmingham). This is more than enough to catch the eye of Fantasy Managers far and wide.

Leighton Baines is one of the hottest assist providers in the league this season and will have ample opportunity to go with his ample price and ample abilities over these next games. Those looking for a more budget defender will have surely heard of Seamus Coleman by now and his “out of position” exploits on the right wing will fit in nicely. Tim Cahill returns from Qatar and will be looking to not another goal or twelve while the aforementioned Louis Saha (provided he stays fit, a major if) offers a real alternative for those not feeling their identikit strike-forces.

Aston Villa

The regular frisk of the fixtures often takes a relatively mid-term look at which teams have a nice month or so coming up – Aston Villa have that. What they also have in abundance is long-term investment potential as the Villa fixtures top the polls for the remainder of the season – get on them now and stick until the end. In the heres and in the now we see that Houllier’s men have got three winnable home games (Blackburn, Wolves and Newcastle) on the horizon as well as kicking off this week with a trip to Ian Holloway’s faltering Blackpool side. Visits to Bolton and Everton in amongst those aren’t exactly amazing, but Everton’s defence certainly hasn’t been the rock it could be this season and the likes of Ashley Young have good records there.

The aforementioned support striker (as he is now being played) is a key contender for investment in the Villa ranks – an £8.1m midfielder at the heart of attacking movements. Keeping hold of penalty duties since the arrival of Darren Bent also boosts affairs. While it may diminish the potential before the new striker, he’s still worth considering as the man at the forefront of the team’s play. The Villa defence hasn’t been the steadiest ship there ever was (one clean sheet in the last 3 months) but luckily they have two bargain options to countenance those wanting aboard. Ciaran Clark is just £4.4m in Fantasy Premier League (FPL) and seems to have been granted the role of left-back – just be warned as he’s nearing the suspensions tightrope on 8 yellow cards. Even cheaper at £4.0m sees loanee Kyle Walker set to impress with his speed and guile which saw him score this week as well as get a phone call from Don Fabio.

Birmingham

If you can get through gameweek 28 without too much of a struggle (Birmingham have no fixture as they’ll be busy facing Arsenal at Wembley) then Birmingham clearly have a nice spell of fixtures that calls out for investment. A spell that happens to start with two gameweeks and pretty much runs it’s course all the way until season’s end – but on a more short term basis, everything is still coming up trumps as those double headers (STK/NEW) and (WBA/eve) are followed by trips to Wigan and a homer versus Bolton.

Craig Gardner is the new confirmed Birmingham penalty taker so his exploits on the field are now only boosted and come priced at a relatively meagre £4.8m in FPL with David Bentley providing a more expensive flourish a home ground bonus hog Barry Ferguson the tight-wad alternative. Up front? Not so much, but the defence equally offers varying prices and calibres with Stephen Carr, Roger Johnson and Liam Ridgewell all holding merit.

Also to consider: Arsenal – at this point, ahead of a very tasty double (WLV/STK) most will have a gunner or three in their ranks. The good news is beyond that the fixtures continue to appeal. Blackburn – they have a new attacking verve and have three nice home games to go with it. It also helps you need not break the bank for the likes of £4m FPL bargain Junior Hoillett. Newcastle – they’ve got a double this week (though in fairness, it’s not the best) followed by some promising to good games. If they can cope without Carroll, and now Ameobi, there might be room for a member of the Toon Army or two.

The Lows…

United

Manchester United have finally lost their first game of the season (equaling a club record in the process) and to bounce back they would hope they might get a nice Mulligan like Blackburn at home to see them back on course. Unfortunately the reality is anything but close to this. As things currently stand United will need to get back on the saddle in the immediate future with games against City, Liverpool and Chelsea over the next three weeks – their biggest rivals and biggest foes.

If they can get through this they will pretty much have one and a half hands on this years title, but it’s not a black and white case and the fixtures demand consideration. Perhaps only the foolish (I count myself among thee) would consider selling their United wares but the bold have the fixtures -if not everything else- to fall back on as a countenance for bartering with other members of the fantasy domain.

Wigan

Wigan have one of the most impotent strike-forces in the Premier League this season (though four goals this week helps boost the numbers somewhat) and now head into a set of fixtures that would put fear into the eyes of the bravest Fantasy Manager – one can only wonder what state of mind Roberto Martinez will soon enough be in; rocking back and forth in the corner of a darkened room come Thursday I imagine.

The latics have to face trips to Liverpool, City and Chelsea as well as hosting United, Spurs and Birmingham. This is not exactly the kind of fixture fodder they will have been requesting as the club tries to pull away from the relegation zone, getting pulled right back into the mire seems almost inevitable and those with Wigan defenders will need to prepare their benches for weeks to come while the likes of N’Zogbia and Rodallega will probably find it even harder than normal to be difference-makers.

Sunderland

Tottenham. Everton. Arsenal. Liverpool. Man City. Take out the reigning and prospective champions and that could arguably be conceived as the five teams a side would least want to face in the Premier League. Steve Bruce is in luck then, because he has to face all five in order over the coming gameweeks. This is a run as hard as it comes and stockpiling your squad with Wearsiders might only lead you down a dark path – one with few clean sheets and less chances at goal than normal.

Be wary of: Fulham – trips to City, Everton and United as well as home games against free-scoring Chelsea, Blackpool and Blackburn (they do that now) means Fulham have a task ahead of them. Chelsea – in the immediate, Carlo’s fixtures aren’t looking so good. Besides a trip to Bloomfield the Blues might face a few challenges. Blackpool – they’ve got some poor form (one win in their last eight) and now face some tough games ahead, double or no double.

Hi guys, wanted to make a few Super Bowl observations after reading some comments people made yesterday.

    1. This is my first year watching English football and my first year playing FPL. Love both. I grew up playing soccer and started watching World Cups in 1994 -- but when I was a kid in the 70s/80s the only soccer we could watch was "Soccer Made in Germany" which was in black and white and on public TV. Nothing like what kids in the U.S. get to see today. Watching EPL at age 10 would have secured in me a lifelong love of soccer. Instead, I had to come back to it. World Cup momentum brought me to the EPL.

    2. Some people on here had the opinion that American football is incredibly boring. It is jarring to go from 45 minute halves with no ads to constant TV timeouts, plus the standing around on the field. I grew up with Denver Broncos football and I've been playing fantasy (American) football for over ten years. Most people hate all the stuff that surrounds the Super Bowl -- the game itself was great though. The SB is a cultural event here and for many people it's the only football they watch all year, so the fluff is for them.

    3. Given #2, it's funny that Americans' primary complaint about soccer is that it's boring. I am constantly defending soccer but there is deep-seated prejudice against it in the U.S. That's changing as the population ages. The second biggest complaint about soccer is the diving. Americans HATE that. I think with American football or English football it's all about competition and if you love competition you can get into either game.

I just did. Didn't really say anything I didn't already know about American's attitude towards proper football. As for diving, if American Football lent itself to cheating in any way other than steroid abuse then there's no doubt it would be as prevalent as it is in our game so they can get of their high horse on that one.

I agree - although I don't think we're 'on a high horse' about it ... I explain this point to people all the time ... the Patriots cheated their way to at least two SB's, so it's more a "diving is a foreign type of cheating" -thing that makes it difficult to get around.

Next time tell them using a time out to try and put someone off taking a field goal is equally as bad as diving if they're talking bad sportsmanship 😉

The truth, IMO, is not the *cheating* ... but the type of cheat: diving is seen as un-manly and weak (and I'd wager you'd agree).

The arrogance, such as it is, held by Americans is rooted in machismo.

                +1

And I agree there's cheating and plenty of bad off the field behavior by NFL athletes that warrants cynicism.

My own Broncos have been tainted by the Patriots cheating scandal because our coach this last year was accused of taping 49ers practices prior to the London game. He was formerly part of the Patriots organization and we all got so disgusted with him the owner finally fired him.

                Cheers guys.

The Patriots did two major things (among others): they videotaped opposing teams signs/play calls during games - so that later in the same game calls could be successfully intercepted for particular plays.

The other transgression was keeping the helmet radio active for beyond the stipluated time. Therefore, the intercepted play could be communicated from the coaches to the quarterback.

They did this several years running - when multiple other teams complained, the NFL clarified the rules during the off-season. Then the Patriots violated them again. The NFL was given the videotapes, testimony from the videographers, etc. Then the NFL laid down some silly-small fines ... destroyed the tapes, and swept it under the rug.

Wouldn't want their poster-boy for success (Tom Brady) sullied.

P.S. Superbowls won since they stopped cheating = 0.

People in UK always think that it's 'foreigners' that dive. I'd agree they do it more, and probably brought the idea of it into our game, but it's far from only them. Especially when they can profit from it and don't get penalised that often when they do get caught. If American Football was truly a world game then I'm sure it'd change dramatically with other country's take on what they'd be prepared to do to win the game.

Yep, agree better than the endless stream of RMTs. However, my view is that the only "non US" sports that will ever have mass appeal across the pond are those at which Americans are world beaters (and if they start to stop beating the world, their popularity quickly drops, ala tennis and atheletics). Doesn't mean some people (Spinner M for example) wont dig football, it's just never likely to really take off with the masses while the best that they can offer is Clint Dempsey.

I think the main issue with the long delays was that it was +5/6/7 hours in the UK when the games are on, so long breaks and drawn out action isn't the best thing to have.

It's a contact sport, football isn't really as much so I understand why there needs to be breaks in the game. It's very sad how officious the celebrations are though, nevermind taking your shirt off to get booked. Just have the sporting highlight of your whole career and you can't kneel down and say thank you without getting penalised.

It does take patience though but I can think of a much worse way to spend a few hours.

Don't think his place was ever really assured. I had him earlier in the season and got rid when Sunderland started getting players back from injury and he stopped getting a game. He might still get the occasional game but with the addition of Sessegnon and Muntari in midfield and Onuoha 1st choice RB it looks unlikely he'll play every game.

Good evening all. I currently have the following line up in mind this DGW.

    Hart

    Huth/Coleman/Hangeland (Djourou/Rafael)

    Fabs/Adam/Bentley/Nani/VDV (hopefully)

    Tevez/DJ/Berbs

I've got .3 in the bank and x2 frees. At the mo I have 6 DGW players (if VDV makes it). I am considering the following transfers with the following GW28 in mind.

    DJ > Odem & Berbs > Suarez

Sound good or should I be more concerned about my defenders this GW?

I was quite confident of a 1-0 United victory v City and would have encouraged you putting in Rafael. Smalling and/or (in particular) Evans partnering Vidic has reduced my confidece levels significantly. Still think it will be a very tight game of few goals.

    So, options are....
A.transfer (if injured) Djourou to another DGWer
    Play Coleman v bol
    Play Walker v bpl

and/or B.and Transfer VDV to another DGWer
    or
    play Nani v MCY

Stockdale not 1st choice anymore, Berbatov not got great fixtures (it's a single game week at the moment, Chelsea is only a possibility and even so it's away to Chelsea) and he's dropping in price tonight, Hughes worth selling for a DGW player or a good GW 28 candidate.

My WC team is a work in progress still, strong base from this week though 🙂

I don't know why everyone is so worried about struggling to field 11 players in GW28...

The Spurs/Arsenal game will only be cancelled if Arsenal draw against Leyton Orient away... Arsenal's GW28 fixture slot will then be used for the replay...

Surely Arsenal will win, and we won't have to worry... and it will probably slot in beside the Chelsea/Man U game (itself not a definite starter)...

Probably is the key word there. Probably doesn't win prizes.

Arsenal and Spurs have no obligation to play their game on March 1st/2nd and they could quite as easily have scheduled it weeks ago with the proviso it might, on the off chance they did draw in the FA Cup, get postponed again just like United and Chelsea - they didn't.

      The following is just wrong:

"The Spurs/Arsenal game will only be cancelled if Arsenal draw against Leyton Orient away"

Until you hear otherwise the game is 'canceled' (you mean postponed until tbc).

The Spurs/Arsenal game HAS BEEN cancelled because the Carling Cup is being played.

No rescheduling has taken place for it yet. Even if there was a free day why would Arsenal choose to play Spurs 3 days after a cup final instead of having a break if they didn't have to? It's not certain so you can't bank on it.

I think the Spurs/Arsenal is already postponed if you look at the official site fixture lists. The're looking for a date to rearrange it. You need to factor in TV rights... Sky have both Chels/ManU and Spurs/Ars, won't want them played simultaneously. And ITV will show an FA Cup game that midweek too, which isn't supposed to be clashed by a televised league game. So it's maybe not straightforward.

Yeah I remember. That is why I asked.

There is only two candidates for me imo, Appleton will get the job till the end of the season if we beat West Sham & Hughton will if we don't beat West Ham.

Di Matteo is still getting paid because he's on gardening leave, our tight chairman isn't going to fork out more money to get Hodgson or Jol in as manager.
