With four Champions League fixtures taking place over the next couple of evenings, we turn our attentions to the TotelFootball game once again. The Fantasy Football Scout Private Pool is still open to entry and with TotelFootball giving away a free £10 for all new registrations, there’s plenty reason to get involved prior to tonight’s deadline.

As per the rules of the competition, our team must be lined up in a 4-4-2 formation, with a further four warming the bench in a 15 man squad. You can pick up to two players per team, though if you exceed this allocation, you will be deducted five points per player over that quota.

With only eight teams to choose from, striking a balance is tricky. If you choose to go without points hits, you’ll need two players from seven teams and one player from the remaining club. The deadline is 7.45pm, though, meaning we can tinker with our picks for tonight’s two games after the official squad lists are rolled out – a real advantage for those favouring the hands-on approach.

Scout Pool Week 3 Round-Up

Pokerface was top scorer in the Scout Private Pool for Week 3 after an 80 point return. Unfortunately, he decided not to enter the Main Pool – the top performer there also produced 80 points and, thanks to a £2.50 bet, picked up £107.71 for his troubles.

Optimus also impressed last time round, supplying two of our top four teams. His sides racked up 78 and 77 points respectively – in a similar story to Pokerface, he would have been quids in if he had played the Main Pool; those scores would have helped him to joint-second and fourth in Week 3 and a share of the cash. The same applies to Inozza. He secured third place in the Scout Pool on 77 points, a tally bettered by only two players in the Main Pool.

Golfboy89 and elninorules were both in the money, though. The former took fifth in the Scout Pool with 76 points, with his decision to enter the Main Pool and stick £2 on his team helping him pick up £17.23. Elninorules profited twice in Week 3. One of his teams produced 75 points – that earned him joint-sixth place in the Scout Pool and £17.23 in the Main Pool, thanks to his £2 bet. Another of his sides produced 73 points – while that was joint fourteenth in the Scout Pool, it was enough to return £8.62 from a £2 stake.

Looking at the levels of scoring, then, the competition in the Scout Pool looks tougher than the Main Pool right now. Our top four teams would all have grabbed a share of the cash if their managers had chosen to take a flutter in the previous Week – clearly, then, the potential for profit is enticing ahead of this evening’s deadline.

Last 16: Week 4 Selections

Looking at the results from last week’s games, it’s intriguing to see that three of the four second leg hosts progressed to the last eight, with Man United the only exception. Indeed, every home side found the net – a pattern we’re backing to continue over the next couple of evenings.

For tonight’s game at the Nou Camp, Barcelona have it all to do. Two goals down from their San Siro reverse, the Spanish side will be hoping they can take their La Liga form into the match against Milan – they have dropped two points at home all season. With that in mind, Lionel Messi is impossible to overlook as one of our two forwards, while Jordi Alba’s raiding runs from left-back earn him a spot in the back-four.

While Schalke have won each of their last three in the league, including a weekend derby win over Dortmund, the news that Klass Jan-Huntelaar has been ruled out with a knee injury is a real blow to their chances. Nevertheless, we’re backing them to overcome Galatasaray after drawing 1-1 in Turkey. At the back, Benedikt Höwedes gets the nod after scoring twice in this season’s tournament, while Michel Bastos comes in on the left of midfield for the hosts. We’re willing to take a punt and opt for the big-game temperament of Didier Drogba over Burak Yilmaz as a route into the Galatasaray attack.

With Franck Ribery ruled out for tomorrow evening’s showdown and Bastian Schweinsteiger suspended, we’re opting for Arjen Robben in the Bayern midfield. The Dutchman is set to benefit from Ribery’s absence and looks a decent differential as Jupp Heynckes’ welcome the Gunners to the Allianz Arena after their 3-1 first leg win at the Emirates. Philipp Lahm gets the nod at the back – he warmed up for this one with a pair of assists in the weekend home win over Fortuna Dusseldorf.

Malaga are in poor attacking form as they look to overturn a 1-0 deficit against visitors Porto. The Spanish outfit have scored just one goal in their last four in all competitions and their lack of bite bodes well for the Portuguese side. We’re hedging our bets here, though, and drafting in a couple of players from both sides – centre-half Martin Demichelis brings plenty goal threat from the back for the hosts, having found the net four times in La Liga this term, while Isco has produced two goals and a pair of assists over five appearances in the tournament so far. For Porto, we’ve went for keeper Helton and playmaker Lucho Gonzalez as our picks.

The Sturridge over Suarez 'value' tactic over the last 3 games. Bear in mind Sturridge isn't nearly as much captain material as Suarez is.

    Sturridge pts, 10, 0, 2

    Suarez pts: 14, 17, 12

If you factor in the Suarez (c) advantage.

That's max 24 points for Sturridge and max 86 points for Suarez.

A loss of 62 points if you went for Sturridge over Suarez.

    Congratulations bandwagon.

Slightly simplistic; Sturridge injury problems weren't foreseen, nor does this take into account where the other money could be spent. How about a combination of Sturridge and Bale as opposed to, say, Suarez and Fellaini?

I'm not saying Suarez hasn't been the better choice, but it's easy in hindsight/with Sturridge's fitness.

Sure but I'm just pointing out how lethal it can be to gamble on the unproven new guy who hasn't got the match fitness/sharpness. And the fact that people are infinitely more inclined to captain Suarez makes it doubly dangerous. I can't imagine a whole lot wanting to captain Sturridge over other options even if they believe in his ability.

This doesn't take into account the opportunity cost of the funds and secondly it's a but unfair right, because of sturridge's injury (it's really distorting the picture - comparing a no show to a captain)

Basically, would you have captained Sturridge against Wigan anyway? No

It's a bit like the RVP argument earlier on in the season, he was a no brainer for captaincy, as is Suarez now.

I think it's that it'll free up midweek dates for the cup replay. If no midweek dates are freed up, then they probably have to play the cup replay instead of the gw31 fixture.

So if City's game vs WBA (GW33) is to be moved it's likely to be GW36 (I think) when that's played.

Just a shame the league will most probably be already over by then, as they'd have:
WEST HAM (swansea WBA) reading NORWICH

      From blanks in 29:
      Arsenal (33)
      Everton (33)
      Man Utd
      West Ham
      Man City
      Wigan
      Chelsea
      Fulham

      From blanks in 33:
      Man City
      West Brom
      Wigan
      Swansea
+ either Man Utd + Stoke or Chelsea + Spurs

Then there’s the possible gw31 replay of the Chelsea/Man Utd game, which could see blanks for:
      Man Utd
      Sunderland
      Chelsea
      Southampton

Also, those talking about Suarez's finishing, he is in good form. That is all.

You have to go about 4 weeks back vs. West Brom where Mr. Unreal and others were talking about, sorry, when they were 'lol'ing at Suarez's finishing.

Its easy to make an argument when one player is in top form and the other, just got injured. Way too easy infact.

And hence I used the word "try". Fellaini > Bale is an excellent upgrade but one of the shortcomings is that most look at the transfers they make as individual ones rather than the group transfers. If my point was to save cash on a cheap 3rd striker, I could argue that I'd get a Christian Benteke and keep that extra 0.5 in the bank for future upgrades as well

Yeah well you could argue that but we'd both know that there's a helluva lot of difference between 0.5 million and 3.5 million. Nobody here thinks Sturridge will out score Suarez it's just that if that extra money gets you a united forward or bale then it's a different matter altogether

His argument seems to me to be more about not rating Sturridge, ie he prefers Benteke, Lukaku etc over him than actually appraising the difference between the two Liverpool men. Does anyone on here really think Sturridge will outscore Suarez? Surely not. But I think there are many reasons to believe Sturridge will outscore anyone in his price band or cheaper.

I'm yet to be convinced that Sturridge is better than any of the mid-priced options. Look at the form Benteke and Lukaku are on. Look at Lambert over the season. And look how sharp they are. How they've played 90 mins of football without picking up injuries and how they have been doing this consistently over almost a full season.

And most importantly, look how dominant they are in their respective sides, look how they consistently outscore other players in their team.

Firstly, one picks Sturridge because one cannot afford Suarez. So the question is strictly financial. Now, I can, for sure say that when it comes to the quality of the strikers in that range, Benteke, Lukaku, (possibly Lambert even) have their pro's that Sturridge does not have. So what do you do then? Do you "cover" for Liverpool's goal scoring? They are not as free scoring as the likes of United. Or do you get the main men from other teams? It's very much up for debate

Yeah, and this is why I find it's a little presumptuous to say Sturridge will automatically rip it up because of Liverpool's goalscoring form.

The goalscoring form has been down to Suarez. They would struggle without him and it's been the same all season.

The fact is, we've seen the evidence that the alternative mid-price strikers are doing it consistently and many have yet to have a single injury as they are properly fit.

There is so much that is assumed about Sturridge without there really being solid evidence that he is really what people make him out to be. That being a central striker who is hogging all the chances. He just doesn't look like he is ready to be that yet. He's had a decent start but I don't see how you can say he's going to be better than other options just because he plays for Liverpool. He needs to show it first.

but Sturridge has already averaged over 5 pts per game. Why won't he continue at that rate? Particularly now he is getting closer to match fitness, playing in a side full of confidence and creating numerous chances vs everyone they play.

The other strikers all play for teams with worse players which are producing far fewer chances than a Liverpool side which, since buying Sturridge, has scored more goals than any other team.

I know but Sturridge has very little to do with the goals Liverpool are scoring. My point being that it's not his personal talent that is causing Liverpool to score goals. If it was then I'd be totally excited and thinking, wow, this guy is really the business. But they have been brilliant even without him scoring or playing.

And that is largely down to Suarez, who people with Sturridge are mainly going without because they saw Sturridge as a guy who can match him for points or at least offer value.

y, i won't argue this. Given the choice, I would certainly go with Suarez rather than Sturridge and the extra cash (even despite my awful TV).

The reason I'm going with both is simply that I see them as the two best value forwards in the game (esp since I got on Suarez at 9.4) and I am happy to take what I see as the higher mean with the knowledge that it increases my variance.

Keep Sturridge, he's still on the short list of best prospects in the game given his fantasy production/underlying stats when he's played. Unless you believe he will continue to struggle with fitness, there's no reason to disregard him as an option.

well if you mean how do you compare Guariola's management of Barca and Tito's management it feels a bit unfair as Tito has sadly been struggling with cancer. This may have had a really bad affect on them, who knows. It's not ideal at all though and might explain the dip in form. Hope Tito gets well soon.
