Arsenal get the better of Bayern in the Allianz Arena but exit the Champions League on away goals. Hatem Ben Arfa is ruled out of Newcastle’s Europa League game with Anzhi, Nani is determined to end the season as a key member of the United first-team, Pepe Reina could be back this weekend for Liverpool, while Alex McCarthy has returned to full training for Reading:

Bayern 0 Arsenal 2
Arsene Wenger made four changes from the side that lost to Tottenham in the north London derby. With Nacho Monreal ineligible, Wenger was able to recall Kieran Gibbs, after the left-back recovered from a thigh injury. Wojciech Szczesny was rested in goal, allowing Lukas Fabianksi a rare outing, while Jack Wilshere’s ankle injury afforded Tomas Rosicky the chance to play in “the hole”, with Santi Cazorla once again preferred out wide. Ahead of a kind run of fixtures and double Gameweek 33, the Gunners’ three main Fantasy assets all played a part – Cazorla and Theo Walcott provided an assist apiece, while Olivier Giroud broke his recent scoring duck by notching in the third minute. Laurent Koscielny justified Wenger’s decision to select him ahead of Thomas Vermaelen by grabbing the visitors’ second but Arsenal’s inability to find a third means that not one British club has managed to reach the last eight.

Post-match, Wenger spoke to the club’s official website and was full of praise for his backline, with Vermaelen and Szczesny owners perhaps a little concerned in light of the Gunners’ resilient showing:

“Our defence played well. Mertesacker, Gibbs, Koscielny, Jenkinson and the keeper all had good games. We always looked in control and solid. You cannot restrict a team like Bayern to no chances…It is possible he (Vermaelen) will play at Swansea. We have tomorrow and Friday yet. I have to see how everyone recovers. We rotate a little bit at the back at the moment…He (Fabianksi) did well and you can only congratulate him. You are never No 1 forever and you are not on one game as well.”

Alan Pardew has confirmed Hatem Ben Arfa will miss out for Newcastle’s Europa League match with Russian outfit Anzhi this evening after yet another hamstring setback.

“We’re trying to finalise exactly his hamstring injury before we put him back into the fore again. He had a little setback so we’re just getting our specialist to look at it today. He knows that this injury that he’s sustained is an injury that we have to be very, very careful of because more important to us is his welfare going forward so we’re not going to take any risks. He had a slight little strain in there and we’re just checking that strain is no more than that. I think that will be the diagnosis and therefore there is a chance he could be involved as early as Wigan.”

Having started the first 12 Gameweeks for the Magpies, Ben Arfa made his first appearance since early December in the first leg against Guus Hiddink’s side last Thursday but this is now the second time this season he has broken down. While Pardew seems optimistic over his short-term availability, with the likes of Moussa Sissoko and Yohan Cabaye flourishing in the centre and new boy Yoan Gouffran also producing on the flank, Newcastle have climbed the table with four wins in the last six. There seems little reason for Pardew to push Ben Arfa back into action, with last week’s 60-odd minutes in Russia clearly proving too much for the player right now.

Nani is confident of recovering from the hamstring tweak that forced him off at half-time in Sunday’s FA Cup Sixth Round draw with Chelsea. The winger spoke of his determination to end the season on a high after a hugely disappointing campaign so far:

“I want to show the manager that he can trust me and he can believe in me in every match. I want to show him my contribution can help win games. So I’ll keep working hard to make sure I’m ready to respond every time I get a chance. Now my confidence is high and I think the best is still to come from me. This is my time and I think I can be important for the team in these big games. Because I was injured for two months, I’m fresh now when some other players are starting to get tired. I feel I’m in good form and I’ve nearly arrived at my peak. I think over the next few games I can surprise a few people.”

With Sir Alex Ferguson keen for his side to go on the offensive as they look for goals to boost their title bid, we only need to look back to United’s last league match to be reminded of the differentials on offer at Old Trafford. A hat-trick from 4% owned Shinji Kagawa in the 4-0 win over Norwich saw the Japanese star rack up a 21 point FPL haul and if Nani is declared fit this weekend, a home game with Reading looks enticing. With Ashley Young and Antonio Valencia both peripheral figures, the Portuguese star – who has now started three of the last four in all competitions for United – may yet have time to redeem himself after returning a measly 32 points over 10 appearances so far.

Managerless Reading received a boost ahead of Saturday evening’s trip to Old Trafford with the news that Alex McCarthy has returned to full training. The keeper took over from Adam Federici in Gameweek 4 and played all of the Royals’ next seven league matches before sustaining a shoulder injury, allowing the Australian to reclaim his first-team berth. With Federici now ironically out injured, Stuart Taylor deputised for Brian McDermott’s final two matches in charge but McCarthy could well be set to return for the weekend visit to United and at 3.9, looks one for the radar if he can nail down that spot once again.

Pepe Reina could be set for a quick return from a calf injury after missing out in Liverpool’s home win over Spurs last Sunday. First-team coach Mike Marsh was confident the Spaniard could return in time for this Saturday’s trip to Southampton as the Reds look to build on their stirring comeback win over the north London outfit – he also hinted that Joe Allen may be set for shoulder surgery sooner rather than later, with the Welshman expected to be sidelined for three months:

“He’s (Reina) coming along nicely. He’s got one of those injuries where you’re not sure how long it’s going to take. He’s still getting treatment – with a bit of luck that will improve in the next couple of days and he’ll be available for Saturday…I think he (Allen) will need surgery. We’ll try to get that out of the way sooner rather than later so he’ll be ready for pre-season. We’ll just see how the rest of the squad is before we commit to that.”

While Allen’s absence is unlikely to affect the Reds when Brendan Rodgers rolls out a 4-2-3-1 – due to Steven Gerrard and Lucas’ availability – a move to 4-3-3 could boost the game time of the likes of Jordan Henderson or Jonjo Shelvey in central areas. Certainly, it seems that for as long as Daniel Sturridge is fit, the 4-2-3-1 seems the current default formation, with Rodgers only looking to change system during the game if his side are behind. Indeed, such a scenario occurred against Spurs, with Philippe Coutinho’s withdrawal allowing Allen game time off the bench as the Reds came back to see off Andre Villas-Boas’ side in the final half-hour of the match.

Michael Laudrup is hoping Leon Britton and Luke Moore can shrug off injuries in time for this weekend’s home clash with Arsenal. Britton was sidelined with a hip injury for last Saturday’s loss at West Brom but has yet to train this week, while Moore’s chances are a little bit more optimistic – he has returned to training after recovering from the calf problem that forced him off in the 2-1 Baggies defeat. Moore has now scored both the Swans’ goals across the last couple of Gameweeks and was handed a first-team opportunity last time out – his start allowed Michu to return to the role in “the hole” after the Spaniard has featured as the lone forward over the last few matches.

Ferguson stated specifically that his full-backs were "knackered" - pre-empting rotation, you would think.

I am starting to wonder how 'unimportant' the coach of barca is.
They can use their assistant manager and still get amazing results, or is it their assistant manager is as good as any PL manager?

It seems like after Pep, they are a team who can function with a coach.

I think they missed a great coach when they were going through their little slump in form. It's all good when things are going great, but when the going gets tough you need the manager then.

Someone is coaching them. In training they were expecting a deep 4-4-2. When they got 4-3-3 they used the extra space in the middle very effectively.

Despite the opposition being naive and poor all credit to an inspired performance.

At the end they themselves played the 4-4-2 they had practiced against in training.

But don't forget how easily Real Madrid put them to bed, even with their reserves. I expect Real or Bayern to take some beating. Barca are pretty but very one-dimensional. Too many know how to play them now.

Can I beg your minute or two to look into my plan:

My Plan is based on United V Chelsea FA Cup result in Chelsea's Favor.

PLAN A: If Chelsea Wins, United DGW33 & Spurs Blank

    Current Team:

    Mignolet-Cerny
    Enrique-Zabaleta-Davies-J Evans-Clyne
    Mata-Bale-Michu-Walcott-Sissoko
    RVP-Lambert-Sturridge

    2FT,2.6 in the Bank.

    GW30: Davies ➡ J Evans
    GW31: Michu ➡ Cazorla

    ------------------------------------------------------
    GW32: Sturridge ➡ Giroud
    GW33: Mata ➡ Kagawa & Sissoko ➡ Fellaini/Pienaar(depends upon Yellow Card Situation)

gives me 7 DGW players without a Hit.

    CHELSEA...C'mmonn Thrash 'em!

My guess is he wants out and will soon be awol.

He'll head butt someone whenever he wants a holiday. Or most likely get sufficient cards in a more subtle way.

    Dear Technical Support,

18 months ago, I upgraded to Girlfriend 1.0 from DrinkingMates 4.2, which I had used for years without any trouble. However, there are apparently conflicts between these two products and the only solution was to try and run Girlfriend 1.0 with the sound turned off.

To make matters worse, Girlfriend 1.0 is incompatible with several other applications, such as LadsNightOut 3.1, Football 4.5, and Playboy 6.9. Successive versions of GirlFriend proved no better.

I tried a shareware program, Slapper 2.1, but it had many bugs and left a virus in my system, forcing me to shut down completely for several weeks. Eventually, I tried to run GirlFriend 1.2 and Girlfriend 1.0 at the same time, only to discover that when these two systems detected each other they caused severe damage to my hardware.

I eventually upgraded to Fiancée 1.0, only to discover that this product soon had to be upgraded further to Wife 1.0. While Wife 1.0 tends to use up all my available resources, it does come bundled with FreeSexPlus and Cleanhouse2005.

Shortly after this upgrade, however, I found that Wife 1.0 could be very unstable and costly to run. Any mistakes I made were automatically stored in Wife 1.0′s memory and could not be deleted. They then resurfaced months later when I had forgotten about them. Wife 1.0 also has an automatic Diary, Explorer and E-mail filter, and can, without warning, launch TurboStrop and Multi-Whinge. These latter products have no Help files, and I have to try to guess what the problem is. Additional problems are that Wife 1.0 needs updating regularly, requiring ShoeShop Browser for new attachments and Hairstyle Express which needs to be reinstalled every other week. Also, when Wife 1.0 attaches itself to my Saab93 Convertible hard drive, it often crashes. Wife 1.0 also comes with an irritating pop-up called MotherInLaw, which can’t be turned off.

Recently I’ve been tempted to install Mistress 2005, but I’ve been told there could be problems. A friend of mine has alerted me to the fact that if Wife 1.0 detects Mistress 2005, it tends to delete all of your Money before uninstalling itself.

Any advice would be helpful, many thanks.

Lateriser, what are you thinking with regards to the wildcard? (I seem to remember advisiing you to keep it but I'm sure you would have come to that decision by yourself anyway!)

I guess it seems obvious to play it between 33 and 36. Personally I'm hoping for United to beat Chelsea in the cup so they're not a part of the doubles in 33. I am more or less at free transfer capacity in terms of just getting in enough Arsenal, Everton and some West Ham.

So having had a look at the ticker, it seems like gameweek 35 is definitely the time to wildcard. This is particularly the case if United end up having a double in gameweek 33.

Man United and Arsenal, players who you will have had in your team for the previous double, are playing each other. Tough fixture you want to get rid.

Man City, Chelsea (and Tottenham?), players who you will want for the next double, all have good fixtures.

    Simples.

People are mentioning Chelsea DGW33, but the only thing confirmed I see is that they have 1 game vs Spurs. The game vs Fulham has yet to be set.

If Chelsea beat United in the replay, they'll, as things stand, have a BLANK GW33.

Are people just assuming their game vs Fulham will be GW33?
