Carlos Tevez proves the difference as City squeeze past Wigan to close the gap at the top to 13 points behind United. Robin Van Persie maintains his return to form with a second goal of the double Gameweek, Andy Carroll adds an assist to his weekend strike at Southampton and Dimitar Berbatov is moved to a more withdrawn role as Fulham are swept aside by Chelsea at the Cottage:

City Defensive Rotation Kicks In
To be fair to Roberto Mancini, his selection policy has been relatively stable this season but last night’s back-four perhaps gave us an indication of what’s to follow from now until the end of the campaign. With the FA Cup final against Wigan on the horizon, the City boss changed three of the defensive quartet that started against United in the previous Gameweek, with only Vincent Kompany retaining his role. The return of Micah Richards has already made a dent in Pablo Zabaleta’s prospects – prior to last night, the Argentine had started every from Gameweek 13 onwards but was omitted from the squad completely as Mancini rang the changes. With a double Gameweek 36 just around the corner, in addition to a kind looking schedule, there’s no doubt City have the potential to rack up the returns but many Fantasy managers will be reluctant to invest at the back in particular in light of last night’s line-up.

Post-match, Mancini took time out to explain his decision before going on to praise Richards’ performance:

“Pablo has played a lot of games, it was important to get him a break…Micah played well for 70 minutes but then he tired which is only natural after six months out. He has to continue to work hard in training because he’s been out for a long time and it takes time to build stamina and fitness up again but I was pleased with his performance.”

Tevez Key for City
While Sergio Aguero lasted just 45 minutes before being replaced by Edin Dzeko at the break, his compatriot Carlos Tevez was the hosts’ goal hero. The Argentine maintained his recent run of league form by bagging the winner against the Latics and has now scored in four of the last six Gameweeks – prior to that run, Tevez had found the just once in 10 appearances but seems to have rediscovered the eye for goal that make him such a popular pick at the start of the season. Post-match, David Platt confirmed Aguero’s withdrawal was due to a hamstring problem and is a likely doubt for Sunday’s trip to Tottenham; the situation merely emphasises just how crucial Tevez will be for Mancini’s side over the last few fixtures of the season, with plenty Fantasy managers set to jump on board the bandwagon if Aguero is sidelined for the upcoming double:

“He has got a problem, but it was a slight problem. It was more of a precaution than anything else. He felt his hamstring tighten up. Just the sheer proximity of the game on Sunday would say he is a doubt.”

Van Persie in the Goals Again
Ahead of the double Gameweek, faith in the Dutchman was understandably muted. Van Persie had failed to find the net in each of his last 10 matches in all competitions for United but last night’s Upton Park equaliser, added to the converted spot-kick against Stoke last Sunday, helped bolster his lead at the top of the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) standings. The draw against West Ham, allied with City’s win at home to Wigan, means United now cannot win the league next Monday at home to Villa but with Van Persie back in scoring form, it’s little wonder he’s already the runaway leader in the Captain Poll with 56% of the votes cast thus far.

For Wayne Rooney owners, though, the double proved disastrous. Rooney had looked a viable alternative to the Dutchman ahead of his side’s pair of fixtures, having scored five times in six starts prior to Sunday’s game at Stoke, and although he returned to a forward role last night, looked woefully out of sorts and was subbed off with 20 minutes remaining. Despite his disappointing display, the upcoming match with Villa is likely to afford him a stay of execution with many Fantasy managers preparing to hand him one more chance before reassessing their forward options as double Gameweek 36 edges ever closer.

Carroll’s Home Endeavours
Having grabbed West Ham’s equaliser at Southampton last weekend, the on loan forward was amongst the points again last night as he ended the double Gameweek with a 12 point haul. Carroll’s header teed up Ricardo Vaz Te for the hosts opener and continued a superb run of recent displays that has produced a goal or assist in each of his four home appearances since returning from a knee injury in Gameweek 24. With Wigan, Newcastle and Reading all yet to roll up to Upton Park between now and the end of the season, Carroll is afforded the perfect platform to maintain his current form and put himself in the shop window over the summer.

Berbatov Drops Deep
With injuries to both his first-choice wide men, Martin Jol was forced into a reshuffle last night that proved costly for the Bulgarian’s owners. Right winger Ashkan Dejagah was ruled out for the season last weekend – Damien Duff switched flanks in Saturday’s trip to Villa but lasted no more than 10 minutes before sustaining a groin problem. Stanislav Manolev was expected to fill in on the right against Chelsea but Jol decided to move Bryan Ruiz there instead, with Berbatov dropping into “the hole” and Mladen Petric leading the line. Prior to the double, the former United man had five goals in his last five and was snapped up by over 90,000 FPL managers but he managed no more than four points over the two fixtures – with Duff already ruled out of Saturday’s clash with Arsenal, Berbatov could once again be utilised in a deeper role, thus lessening his potential once again.

Luiz on the Radar
While John Terry’s brace will hog the headlines, there’s little doubt the Chelsea skipper remains far more prone to rotation than certain others in the ranks under Rafa Benitez. Although the Spaniard’s penchant for alternating players means no one can really be regarded as nailed-on, David Luiz is certainly utilised more than most. The Brazilian has missed just one of the last seven Gameweeks – a trip to Southampton which took place two days before the FA Cup game with United – and has racked up the points at both ends of the pitch in recent weeks. Chelsea have conceded just one goal in the last four league matches with Luiz in the starting XI and he’d also produced two assists prior to last night’s superb strike. Certainly, the Blues’ upcoming schedule (seven game in 20 days from Sunday onwards) remains relentless but Luiz showed last night the upside to his acquisition could well reap reward.

After seeing Rooney`s performance last night (atrocious), along with his starting position in the team for the last two games, what are peoples thoughts for the Villa game? Surely, if you own him, you have to keep atleast for one more game? Im looking to ditch, possibly for Tevez or Adebayor for GW 36, but since its Spurs-City this weekend neither of those tempt me right now. Other transfer i`m looking at is Fellaini->Michu. Obviously hindsight is 20/20, but i wish i had the cojones to stay away from Fellaini. With Mirallas in the team, he doesnt deliver as much FPL points, and Everton have quite the run-in.

Definite captain for me. Against a team like Stoke he was needed to play deep, I reckon he will be back up top with RVP next game. Since he came back from injury he has kept up and even exceeded RVP most of the time. I think he'll come back with a bang against Villa.

Yeah. And if it wasnt for the penalty and the offside-goal last night, he would have had a blank this DGW. Didnt really look like scoring against Stoke, although he was decent last night. Guess i`ll just bite the apple and captain him one last time before departing.

Hoping youre right. Like i said, at home to Villa (even though theyre a much improved side last couple months), the fixture is just too good to get rid. And nobody else really tempts this week. Just a bit worrying that he hasnt even finished the last two games, and his performance last night was pretty poor.

I firmly believe that if it wasn't at home to Villa, SAF would have already decided to drop him. His attitude last night was unacceptable. This whole MOTM thing people are jumping on v Stoke. It has to be recognised how poor Stoke really are. When the game is played at a high tempo which didn't happen v Stoke Rooney isn't up to it. There are a lot of mids that would get MOTM awards against them, don't be suprised if Townsend doesn't the weekend.

This would be fantasy gold.. from BBC:

    FOOTBALL
Goalkeeper Rogerio Ceni scored his 112th goal when he converted a penalty in Sao Paulo's 2-0 win over Atletico Minerio in the Libertadores Cup on Wednesday.

The 40-year-old Brazilian, whose goals have mainly come from penalties and free-kicks, has made more than 1000 appearances for Sao Paolo. He also has 16 caps for his country but never scored for the national side.

Arent all 35 yard screamers hit and hope? Steve Gerrard admitted that atleast he never aims when shooting from that range. Just try to hit the ball cleanly and hope for the best.

Well i wouldnt go that far. Personally, when i shoot from around 20 yards i still try to aim, and im only 5% as good of a shot as Premier League players, so i reckon they try to place their shots as well, but i get your point.

Yeah, that goal was fantastic as well. I just cant look past Suarez`s goal against Newcastle. His balance and abilities in that counter attack are just incredible. That touch around Krul might be the best one i`ve seen all season, and i`ve seen atleast 10 games with Messi.

    Defensive Regression table updated: http://members.fantasyfootballscout.co.uk/my-stats-tables/view/2254/

This week's stats suggest that over the last 4 matches played:

Everton, Arsenal and Liverpool have conceded fewer goals than they should have. Standout team is Everton who (according to the stats) should have conceded several more goals in this period. They gave away 7 big chances and conceded 24 goal attempts in the box but conceded just 2 goals.

Man Utd, Stoke and Chelsea have conceded more goals than they should have. Standout team is Man Utd but interestingly Stoke aren't far behind. Stoke allowed the opposition 4 big chances and 26 attempts in the box and were punished with 6 goals.

        Indeed.

I might have to revise how I present these results - at the moment I'm just looking to highlight the teams who have over/under performed relative to the stats. Wigan's goals conceded is broadly in line with what you would expect given their stats, which is to say it's extremely impressive.

Wilson vs QPR (Remy on form)
Clyne vs Swa (Michu on form)
Pearce vs Nor (Worst attacking threat, but Reading leaky as hell)

    Hoping to get some advice!

My ML rival has cut my lead from 60 to 30 points this week, pretty much totally due to him captaining RVP and me not even having him.

Would it be madness to do Cazorla & Berbatov to RVP and Maloney for -4? I would then captain RVP.

He will captain RVP v Villa and I have no natural captain choice available. I'm worried RVP (c) will be another 16-20 pointer.

The way Fulham played last night, if they play like that against Arsenal, Cazorla has a very high chance of getting something big. They game away too much space which led to Luiz's goal and Mata's cross in for Terry's goal. And if Caz is given space like that. he can do wonders too. No standout (c) options this week, he might be my (c).

Actually I take that back. Like Shaylan said below, it's only GW36 that stands out.

I think the main problem is the lack of strikers with a DGW in 36 that you'd want in this week.

Perhaps GW35 could just be Berba -> Tevez (would mean waiting a week for Bale though)...

    Morning lads.

Not been on here much lately.

This mega DGW36 is a bit of a problem.

Don't really want to be taking too many hits to get players in so thinking.

    GW34 - Sissoko - Michu
    GW35 - Tevez - ? Suarez or RVP ?
    GW36 - Cazorla - Bale

    Gives Hazard, Michu, Bale, Tevez.

    4 should be enough???

Don't want to take Suarez or RVP out but feel Tevez could be on a roll.

GB if you are saying Rooney has been impressive for some time, I'm not sure what games your watching. After the Stoke game SAF said himself the reason he played him in his position against Stoke was to try and get his confidence back. One thing Rooney never lacked was confidence, he follows up that game with probabably his worst performance in a Utd shirt. I reckon his days at Man Ut are numbered.

With Defoe out, he`ll play both games. Takes pens. Who else are you going to get? Torres, Ba, Dzeko, Aguero, Tevez? All HUGE rotation risks with the FA cup / EL finals ( if Chelsea go through), or Konè? I`d rather gamble on Emanuel, shite as he may be.

Even if he is, he`s been injured a while. Ade should start both games anyway. Depending on if Bale makes it, they might even start both of them.

    Hi Guys,

Current team for next GW stands at this:

    DDG
    Rafael - Sagna - Martin
    Fellaini - Lampard - Cazorla - Sissoko
    Giroud - Rooney - Suarez

    Bunn - Maloney - Clyne - Pearce
    0.1m in the bank.

I will be playing my WC in GW 35, so for one week only, which one is the best PUNT:

    A) Lampard ---> Michu
    B) Giroud ---> Carroll/Remy
    C) Sissoko ---> Snodgrass
    D) Other

    Thanks.

Urgh, wish I hadn't checked but I have - I've had Rafael for four GWs and he's brought me two points. And yet (and yet!) I will still keep him this weekend as it's Villa at home. Hate this kind of player, the one who's useless but has good enough potential to make you want to keep hold.

I stepped off the broken down Johnny Evans bandwagon straight onto the Rafael shambles.

What are your thoughts on my transfer plan?

    GW34: Lampard to Michu
GW35: Cazorla, Lambert and Rafael to Dawson, Bale and Tevez(-8)
    GW36: Save transfer

    It leaves this team:
    De Gea
    Dawson, Sagna, Clichy
    Bale, Hazard, Fellaini, Michu
    RVP, Suarez, Tevez

Tevez would want to do well there.
