Robin Van Persie hits three past Villa as United clinch the title at Old Trafford. Wayne Rooney is shifted deeper again as Sir Alex Ferguson’s side register their eighth clean sheet in the last 10 Gameweeks. Elsewhere, Michael Turner is a doubt for Norwich this weekend, Arsenal appeal Olivier Giroud’s red card, while Antolin Alcaraz may miss Wigan’s home game with Tottenham this weekend:

Van Persie Runs Riot to Seal the Title
The Dutchman picked the perfect opportunity to serve up his highest Fantasy Premier League (FPL) haul of the season last night. A hat-trick and maximum bonus harvested a 17 point return and not only helped United to the title, it enabled Van Persie to overtake Luis Suarez in the race for the Golden Boot. Prior to last week’s double, he had scored once in eight Gameweeks – with strikes against Stoke and West Ham supplementing last night’s haul, he has now scored five times in eight days as Sir Alex Ferguson clinched a 20th league crown for the Red Devils. With the Uruguayan looking set for a lengthy ban, Van Persie now seems unstoppable in his quest to finish his debut season at United as top scorer in the Premier League – he is just six behind last term’s tally of 30 for Arsenal, though now travels to his former club next weekend before playing host to Chelsea. Having faltered over the early part of spring, he’s flourishing once again and with United now needing to win their remaining four matches to set a new points record, Ferguson may well decide against rest and rotation up top as he looks to finish the season with a flourish.

Rooney Drops Deep Again
Having been shifted back up front for the previous match with West Ham, Wayne Rooney’s owners were hopeful of a return to the form that had harvested five goals in six games prior to last week’s double. It wasn’t to be, however, as the former Everton man was deployed in a withdrawn role alongside Michael Carrick, with Shinji Kagawa tucking in behind Van Persie instead. Rooney managed just a single assist and was once more subbed off around the 70 minute mark by his manager –those who chose to invest in him for last week’s ahead of Van Persie will be bitterly disappointed as to how events have since transpired, given he had seem a genuinely viable alternative. At 12.0 in FPL, his owners will be looking to sell and with Luis Suarez owners also shopping for replacements, a frontline shake-up can be expected over the next few days.

Jones’ Versatility Proving Key
With Nemanja Vidic and Rio Ferdinand both handed the night off, Phil Jones partnered Jonny Evans in central defence but in spite of the alterations, the hosts held steady to register an eighth clean sheet in the last 10 Gameweeks. Even if Ferguson maintains this rest and rotation policy at the back, Jones’ versatility looks set to earn him further game time and perhaps boost his appeal over other United defenders. The last few matches have seen him play at right-back and in central midfield and, having missed the vast majority of the season through injury, fatigue is certainly not an issue for the former Blackburn man.

In Other News
Chris Hughton admitted he is sweating on the availability of Michael Turner after the centre-half was subbed off within 20 minutes of last weekend’s win over Reading.

“We certainly would’ve liked Michael to have stayed on. We’re not sure how bad it is. He’s felt his groin and we’re hoping it will be slight.”

Turner had scored in each of Norwich’s previous couple of Gameweeks before limping off against the Royals and had recently risen in price as a result of his exploits. With a trip to Stoke followed by back-to-back home games with Villa and West Brom, the potential of clean sheets looks enticing for Hughton’s side – Turner’s owners are likely to hold until further prognosis, though Russell Martin is similarly priced at 4.3 in FPL for those looking for a route into the Norwich defence.

Arsenal have confirmed they have appealed Olivier Giroud’s sending off against Fulham on Saturday afternoon. The Frenchman is currently set to serve a three-match suspension, meaning he would miss games against United, QPR and Wigan, to return on the final day of the season against Newcastle but the Gunners are optimistic the ban will be overturned. Giroud’s absence may be set to afford Lukas Podolski a chance to lead the line after Arsene Wenger talked up the German’s capabilities in a central role prior to Giroud’s Craven Cottage dismissal, though Theo Walcott owners are also hoping he can be utilised centrally again after operating on the right flank for the vast majority of the season. The FA are expected to make a decision on the matter later today.

Reports indicate Wigan could be without key defender Antolin Alcaraz for next weekend’s crucial home encounter with Tottenham. The Paraguayan was subbed off after just 15 minutes of last weekend’s defeat at West Ham with a hamstring problem and the initial prognosis is believed to be around seven to 10 days, though he is set for further tests this week in order to ascertain the full extent of the damage. The Latics had conceded just three goals in the previous four with Alcaraz in the first XI after he recovered from a long-term groin injury – with a double Gameweek 36 just around the corner, his presence in the back-three will undoubtedly boost their chances of defensive returns as Roberto Martinez attempts to engineer a last-ditch scramble to safety.

Hazard (SWC), Michu (che), Gerrard (new), Bale (wig), Walcott (MUN)
Cisse (LIV), Sturridge (new), RVP (ars)

Hmm following on Epics logic I think if Liverpool are going to score its more likely to be sturridge than Gerrard. I am leaning towards Walcott as he was poor last game but worry about Man Utd defence rotation and arsenal being really up for it. Oh I don't know.

Suarez out means Liverpool's attack becomes less attractive. He might take up a more advanced role but who knows?

Giroud's ban being upheld could lead to Cazorla playing a slightly different role too but I'm not sure if that will affect his output.

It seems people on here are getting in Tevez for the DGW.

Are they not afraid that his game time will be limited?

Are they not afraid that he will be rested for the FA Cup final?

    04 May 15:00 Gameweek 36 Swansea (A)
    07 May 19:45 Gameweek 36 West Brom (H)
    11 May FA CUP FINAL
    14 May 20:00 Gameweek 37 Reading (A)

Surely whoever starts the final, wont start a game 4 days before it? Even if he did start, surely his mind would be on the final, take it easy mode...

Then if they win, they will celebrate, hangover, probably stay in London the next 3 days before playing Reading. IF Tevez then started game, how many minutes would he get? What shape would he be in? Would he be motivated so soon after the final?

There is concern but City aren't just going to throw the rest of their league games just because of the FA Cup final... No matter how much we analyse it, a striker will always want to play and score goals no matter the importance of the game.

Personally I think its one of those "anyone could play situations" and whoever you get in will play simply out of a lucky decision.

I've had Aguero the last while, so no point in switching him now.

People are getting Tevez because he is cheapish and has been playing regularly recently. Alot of people need to get rid of Suarez and clearly replacing him with a DGW'er makes sense, the only NAILED on striker with a DGW is Kone and he doesnt exactly inspire.

Swansea have Moore/Michu rotating striker spot
      Chelsea rotate Ba and Torres
WBA constantly swap Long and Lukaku
Spurs have Ade and Defoe / everyone will want Bale anyway.

      Tevez makes sense.

"Bittner et al. [2] explain the excess in terms of a dependance of on the number of goals already scored { a dependence that they ascribe to `football fever' { a self armation in which goals encourage more goals."

Was a release clause, that does seem low to me, but can't force keep a player when the clause is triggered.

I think it's low for a release clause. They're usually in place for youngsters for way over their market value, to prevent the good talent from being poached and keeping the seller club in control over who to sell to etc.

From any team's view it's a huge gamble to fork out that kind of money on a 20 year old so in that sense it's not now. That said, players that are as good as Götze at his age come around less than once every three or four years

Yeah okey, but he must have signed his contract a couple of years ago and I consider it fairly often that such players turn up with release clauses around their market value a few years later (i.e. €37m was VERY high when he was 17-18 but now it is not).

Still, it is more than I would pay for him.

I'd think his contract has been negotiated since then, but this is of course speculation. If not your point is fair.

Really hope he can stay injury free, think he has every chance of being a player of the highest world class

If Arsenal had retained Nasri, Fabregas and RVP, brought in Cazorla and given that new contract to Walcott sooner, they would have probably won this year's EPL with almost a wide margin as United did...

I feel that this confirms that Arsenal is becoming a 'feeder' club to the big clubs...

We would also be in debt and paying huge interest rates every year.

Look at this country, the interest rates on the uk debt are killing us. Had we not been so far in debt the credit crunch wouldnt have bothered us. Its the same at at every level of business.

For a sports team, doesnt it make sense to carry a bit of debt for a few years of you can win something like Man City and Chelsea have done... Sports is after all not just a business and inspires maybe millions... it's not like Arsenal were facing bankruptcy and has to lay off it's employees...

It's not like Arsenal dont have a billionaire share holder who has repeatedly said that Arsenal are making bad decisions selling of their good players...

Oh come on, If your most hated team was winning all the time, you would also cheer for the team that has the best chance of beating them even if it is not the team that you are a fan of... If I didnt do that, I would just need to switch of the television and concentrate on something else when I know the team I am a fan of will always be in the mid table... Surely fans of such teams like Villa, QPR, etc also support/cheer other teams at the moment so as to have at least some joy in watching EPL...

Well at least you have totally failed to replace the man. For me personally a fit Wilshere is better than Fabre. RVPs loss just hurts more cause you replaced him with Giroud.
But at the center of the midfield it is like men vs boys as most teams overrun Arteta and whoever is next to him. The lack of Song has also brought out all the faults in the defense.

Im not saying Song is better than the 2, but he has certainly left the biggest hole IMO.

We'll agree to disagree on this one. Our defence isn't nearly as bad as people make out, problem is we aren't creating enough and often end up pushing more men on. Agree that Arteta isn't the ideal DM but i don't think he's done much worse then Song. Maybe i am biased becasue Cesc is one of my favourite ever Arsenal players but Wilshere is no where near his class yet. Agree with you on RVP and Giroud.

Also, Song frustrated a lot of Arsenal fans in his final year, he kept going forward and leaving the back line exposed. Lacked discipline. Much like Vermaelen' goals masked over his defensive frailties, Songs assists masked over his poor performances.

I was having a chat with my dad last night and came to the conclusion that there could be a lot of big money moves this summer. Personally I think that Bale, Rooney, Lewandowski, Tevez/Dzeko, Carroll, Torres, Suarez and a few more will all move. Due to the FFP rules though it could create a huge circle of moves, almost like selling chains you get with houses.

Gargamel says: "You talk like if it actually matters to him what fans of clubs that are not Bayern or Barca think about him and his achievements"

True, I'm sure he doesn't care what most other people other than those fans think. It's a valid point and moreover it's debatable whether he needs to "prove" himself anymore than he already has.

However I care what I think and I think he is taking the second best job in European club football, not exactly the biggest of challenges, and I'm concerned about what can qualify as success for him. What is the project? Whatever it is, it gets increasingly mundane for me with the signing of Gotze who not only adds a fantastic player to their roster but weakens their main domestic rival considerably.

Sure, I'm excited about seeing whether Pep can implement his unique style (possession, methodical build-up, tiki-taka, quick closing down after losing possession) on this Bayern team and I'm hoping we see Barca Vs Bayern (with Pep in charge) so ascertain if he can successfully outmanouver or nullify the best club side ever as has been the challenge for Mourinho, Sir Alex and any other coach who faced it in recent years.

For that reason, winning the European Cup convincingly and beating Barcelona are the only success criteria that I can abide with.

Fair points, I get you now. I think too that anything else than winning the CL would feel like a bit of a failure with the ground he had so start off form.

Can this week's discussion piece be on the 20 character limit for team names please Mark? Not only will I now never know the joys of havign a team called "Supercali-Fabregastic-Cescy-alidocious", but I can't even have "Suarez Ate My Homework" next season!

..that and the fact that the players on fpl always "move around" when you open and close the site. I'm a organised type of person and can't take it if Suarez plays left, then right and then middle.

These are the big issues that need resolving!

I always try and get at least my starting squad lined up correctly on the pitch, which can be tricky as I always seem to have about 3 left backs in my team.

But AVB is using Vert in central defense atm where he is way less effective... so I'm not transferring him in unless AVB puts him back in left back position
