Weekly Fantasy games come into their own when the season enters the closing stages and the interest of those cast adrift in mini-leagues starts to waver. PlayON is a weekly Fantasy offering that’s newly arrived on our radars, having come out of beta to be released publicly in the last month. After a few weeks dabbling with what it has to offer, we thought we’d get involved and bring it to your attention.

What is PlayON?

The concept of PlayON is beautifully simple, although there is a welcome level of depth underpinning the game that perhaps other weekly games have lacked; a factor that will appeal to the more seasoned Fantasy manager.

You pick a starting eleven from the Premier League squads, limited by a budget of £100 million. There is no restriction on the number of players you can sign from each club and you must build your squad in a 4-4-2 formation. Easy.

The depth comes in when you start to look at player prices. These vary week to week and are based on an algorithm that measures recent performance and adjusts their price accordingly. With a bit of research and knowledge, then, you can easily spot a bargain to hopefully give you an edge. You can resave your team as many times as you want right up to 10 minutes before the first kick-off. It’s your last saved team that gets entered into all your games.

Once your team is built, this can then be used to enter a number of multiplayer games or one-on-one challenges. You can play a free multiplayer game without making a deposit or just challenge another player for fun.

Alternatively, you can play for cash. Entering a multiplayer game for a set stake, you’ll have a chance of wining your share of the pot should you finish high enough in the rankings – this week there’s a £1,000 guaranteed pot for a £2 entry. Similarly, you can challenge another player one-on-one with a slider used to select the amount at stake. The likes of Robbie Fowler, Gareth Southgate and Opta Joe are all playing the game and are there to be challenged.

Why Should I Play?

Apart from the pricing system giving the knowledgeable Fantasy manager an edge, PlayON’s scoring system plays into the hands of those familiar and comfortable with statistics.

While goals, assists and clean sheets all contribute big points to your players’ totals, you also score points for shots on target, saves, interceptions, clearances and tackles. All the data is gathered from Opta so, those Scout visitors who have access to our Members area will have a real edge when it comes to team selection. Using our tables and player comparison tool, you can quickly begin to unearth some gems when you couple this with the player pricing.

The live matchday experience is also rather good. Once the matches kick-off, you can watch a live feed of the match events that effect your team with your points totting up as they roll in, vidiprinter style. The standings in your games are also updated live so you can see how you’re faring and if you’re currently in the money.

The game is also developing communities of players, united under their own club. Simply choose the club you wish to represent. Each week you play your team points get added to your club total. In addition, the top points scorer from each club represents the club in the “League of Titans” the following week.

Every 10 weeks, the top two teams in each division are promoted and the bottom 2 teams are relegated.

How Do I Start?

It’s all pretty easy. Register an account at PlayON at www.playon.co.uk. You don’t have to make a deposit as you can play the free multiplayer games without shelling out.

We’ve been set up as Ambassadors in the game along with Fowler, Southgate and OptaJoe. This doesn’t mean we’ll be handing out ferrero rocher before the match but it does mean we get a fancy badge and can set up multiplayer games and be challenged for one-on-ones.

We have a Fantasy Football Scout free multiplayer game running that all can join and you can find us and challenge our team to a one-on-one game for £1. You can also easily create your own games for you and a group of mates.

You’ll also find the Fantasy Football Scout team in the “Ambassadors Game” which has a prize pot of over £1000 and is just £2.20 to enter. We’ve entered that over the last two weeks and have been in profit. For those who fancy waging some cash to win some cash, this is the route we recommend.

With the knowledge in the Fantasy Football Scout community, we’d expect to see some familiar names up there on the leader board come Saturday afternoon.

As a new game in the Fantasy market, we’d be interested to get your feedback on the game. We’ve enjoyed our experience so far and, as we look for new games to support next season, PlayON is certainly in the running.

PlayON, like many weekly Fantasy games, is a form of gambling so you have to be aged over 18 and over to play and, if you do wager some cash, please remember to gamble responsibly.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

Big problems this week, need to get rid of Giroud but also want to get Bale in.

Would you do, Giroud to Lukaku/Defoe this week? Or Fellaini to Bale this week?

Maybe even both but that would be for -8.

          Yeah, that's the only problem.

I would do Felliani to Bale this week, but that is difficult. Can see Bale destroying Alcaraz-less Wigan.

PlayON looks interesting but why make the list of players so short (eg you have to scroll through 12 different pages to see all the Forwards)? Terrible design. Makes the process of bargain hunting fairly tedious.

    Hart

    Vertonghen, Luiz, Kolarov

    Bale, Mata, Silva, Michu

    Benteke, Kone, Lukaku

JontyFuzzy is about to make a dent in the UEFA doubles competition.

Took Lukaku before he was rising, wanted him anyways. Later regretted it since I wanted Tevez as well and hes risen even more than lukaku. But got Rvp & Lambert so fairly happy with that this week.

A few people noting that it's difficult to pick a team. We wanted to design a game that was based on skill - as there is money involved, results need to be based on skill rather than luck. Since we launched, some people are winning consistently - indicating the skill factor is high, consistent and the more you know, the more you will win.

The list of players is the same height as the pitch on the right so that you can always see when you have selected a player on the pitch and how many positions you still have to fill. If the list was longer, you would be making selections and then needing to scroll back up the page to see the player reflected on the pitch. We designed the page so the interaction between list of players and pitch was seemless, rather than scrolling down through a list of players. All feedback is welcome though and we're taking everything on board.

I think luck is an element over a season game. For a weekly game you want skill to outweigh luck IMO - although it will be a factor e.g.: my punt on Sidwell.

To a certain extent. My best team on totel football had Carroll and Lukaku paired in attack whilst everyone else have RVP, Suarez etc. Sure I got the run of the green, but it still took a fair bit of skill to pick the right two left field picks.

How annoying. Fellaini playing deep and now Morrison probably will.

Haidara at 7.7m might be a good enabler if you think Liverpool might struggle a bit without Suarez

    My current team:

    Hart
    Kompany / Vertonghen / Baines
    Bale / Hazard / Michu / Fellaini
    Tevez / Defoe / Berbatov

    Bunn / Maloney / Davies / Harte

For the DGW next week should I just use 1 transfer on either Berb/Fell and bench the other for Maloney? Or swap both and bench Maloney?

Also should I swap Baines for Luiz and bench Davies or just play Davies?

If you are switching Berb, you may as well do it this week IMO.

But who too? Seems there are better midfield DGW options so maybe bench Berb & swap out Fellaini is the best option next week?

Berb is home to Reading next week, so you wouldn't want to bench him.

Kone would be an option - decent DGW fixtures for him.

Yes very good point. Maybe swapping out Fellaini and benching Maloney may be he better option.

Why not just play Maloney next week and bench Fellaini, saving the transfer? It's not like your funds will stretch to Mata, and you've got the other decent DGW options covered there.

Fellaini then has another good fixture the week after the doubles.

Then get rid of Berb in GW37.

@PLAYON what makes some countries eligible and others not?

It's down to our ability to verify you and process transactions from your country. We are licensed and regulated by the UK Gambling Commission and use 192 / Experian to verify people are over 18 and Worldpay to process all payments. Most countries that don't prohibit online gaming are fine.

i have exactly same problem (Maloney or Berbatov). currently leaning towards Maloney, because when i see their points looks not different enough, i use PPI comparisons:

      Maloney:
      12
      25
      12
      27
      5
      10

      Berbatov:
      34
      21
      7
      -8
      -6
      3

Maloney is more consistent at the moment so it looks likely to get BP at least if they get 2 points only...

      But i'm not sure enough.

Should I just play Rafael Sagna Baines or take a hit to get someone for this week and the double?

Only Man City defender would be worth a hit imo, but there is rotation risk there.
