After edging out Blackpool in the 2011/12 Championship play-off final, Sam Allardyce turned to a familiar face as West Ham made their way back into the top flight. With former number one Rob Green heading off to Loftus Road, Allardyce raided former club Bolton for the services of Jussi Jaaskelainen in what has proven an inspired piece of business.

Reunited with his former Trotters boss, the Finnish international was one of only five players to manage every minute of the season gone by and his endeavours between the sticks were, at times, the difference between victory and defeat for the Hammers as Allardyce steered the club to a tenth place finish.

The Statistics

Starting the season with three clean sheets in the first four Gameweeks, Jaaskelainen’s cut-price potential was immediately apparent. Coming in at 4.5 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL), he quickly picked up in price as Fantasy managers scrambled on board the bandwagon. The Hammers stopper managed just eight more clean sheets over the following 34 Gameweeks, including a testing spell which saw him keep out his opponents just once between Gameweeks 12 and 24 but it was Jaaskelainen’s propensity to rack up the save points that made him such a valuable Fantasy acquisition.

On as many as 26 occasions the West Ham number one earned at least one save point, as he ended the campaign with an incredible 156 saves – more than any other keeper in the game. Having racked up 144 points, he finished joint-second for goalkeepers along with Asmir Begovic and Petr Cech and was 21 points better off than Joey O’Brien as the most impressive defensive option at Upton Park. Furthermore, Jaaskelainen ended the campaign as the number one player for value in the FPL game, returning 27.7 points per pound, just enough to edge Southampton’s Rickie Lambert (27.5) into second.

While Jaaskelainen’s heroics were rarely rewarded by bonus points (just four all season), his consistency of performance and guaranteed game time were key to his popularity as over 19% of FPL managers ended the season with the Hammers man in their sides, the second more popular stopper in the game.

The Prospects

With both Allardyce and Jaaskelainen signing contract extensions in the last month or so after the club clinched their top-flight security, the Finnish stopper will no doubt continue to offer us a reliable first-choice option between the posts.

A trusted lieutenant of the Hammers boss, Jaaskelainen’s appeal is likely to be dented by a price hike across the Fantasy games next time out, however, with a rise to 5.5 looking the likeliest scenario in FPL. With the likes of Michel Vorm and Tim Krul potentially dropping in cost after underwhelming seasons at Swansea and Newcastle, and John Ruddy perhaps remaining a cut-price option due to his injury-blighted campaign at Norwich, Jaaskelainen faces a real struggle to retain our FPL interest. Jaaskelainen would need to see more reward from the bonus system, whilst, in other Fantasy games, look to earn points for saves – something that has been lacking from the Sky Sports effort this term.

Even if Jaaskelainen offers the same level of clean sheet and save point returns, a jump in price would see his value take a significant drop and with the promoted sides also vying for our attention, the preferred tactic for cheap rotation keeper pairings in the FPL will make it difficult for the Finn to have the same sort of impact upon our Fantasy seasons next time round.

    Geez, I’m leaving this place.
No one even cares to reply to my comments. No one thinks I’m a regular, even though I have been here all the time in the last one year. Probably because I’m not cool enough and don’t get into childish fights with other posters. It’ll be nice to be back in August, because there will be non-regulars to whom I’m completely anonymous, and hence they reply to my posts.

Oh yeah, a whole lot of thanks to TW, because you’re the one who actually was nice to me.

    Goodbye, friends

        Bale 7.5

    My Arsenal XI next season.
    (Assuming realistic transfers occur)

    Szczesny. Jenkinson-Mertesacker-Koscielny-Gibbs. Arteta-Fabregas. Walcott-Wilshere-Cazorla. Benteke/Jovetic. (4-2-3-1).

: I wonder if defensive reinforcements are a priority, but I'd love someone like Piszczek as RB, and a Williams at CB.

: If Fabregas doesn't come, I'd like a good DM to play alongside Arteta, and Wilshere in the hole. Diame, maybe?

: Out of the strikers, I'd prefer Benteke ahead of Jovetic. Young, raw, and an Arsenal fan. A great eye for goals, too.

      Wenger would NEVER sign Benteke.

He's already said he didn't sign Ba becoz they already had a target man (Giroud). If anyone, we will sign jovetic or Higuain.

Agree with most but certainly don't think Williams is the sort of player Wenger should be targeting. A good defender for Swansea yes, but gets caught for pace and is the last thing you need alongside Mertesacker. Will also be 29 by the time the season kicks off.

    morning,

I presume there will be a few people holding a fantasy football party this sat before the champs league....

Hah! Never did it, but sounds like fun. We usually do FPL related parties when the game opens up where we guess prices and stuff, and then another one on the opening day of the season when we reveal our teams etc #nerds

What do you have this far? I think after the season is over you all deserved some heavy drugs.

You don't have to play an offside trap if you're not comfortable, but a good defensive line should at least prevent players getting through on goal easily due to one guy playing him onside.

I a good thing to do is watch games, observe players' positioning and learn from their mistakes. MOTD analysis can also be useful for this sometimes.

Shout loud and often, especially to your fullbacks and the DM.

      Win ALL headers!

Speak to your GK often, and do tell him if he needs to come out to get the ball.

When in doubt, punt it instead of trying a fancy dribble/pass.

      CB:

When not on the ball, be vocal and communicate with your team-mates. Try to organise the defensive line and pay attention to your position on the field. Don't stay too deep and invite pressure, but also don't play too high, especially against fast opponents. Don't let long balls bounce if possible as it'll give the attacker the advantage; try to get your head on it and clear it as soon as possible.

When in possession, don't hang on to the ball too long. Ideally look for short, forward passes, but if you're under pressure and/or you're not sure, hoof it.

Also, don't get beat! It sounds obvious, but don't go to ground early and put yourself out of the game as more often than not you'll be the last man. Stay on your feet and on your toes. Wait for the attacker to make a mistake before going for the ball.

Another thing: if you're playing against a big striker who has got his back to goal and is trying to hold the ball up, don't get too close behind him as he'll want to try and turn you.

There's been a fair bit of talk about introducing 'recovered balls' or some other stat to make defensive midfielders appealing. I don't think I agree. I play FPL to make the games more fun to watch. But I just can't imagine myself cheering when Lucas wins another tackle.

Also, the points you do currently get are rewarding because they are few and far between. The more ways to earn points the less exciting each one will be.

I agree to an extent but the problem with the current system is that it instantly rules out about 60% of the players from being a viable choice. I'd like to see more varied teams which aren't just picked from a core pool of about 60 players.

      I'm easy either way.

I think it's a good rule but not that fussed if it doesn't get introduced.

I do however think the 18 ppi for a goal should be reduced (to perhaps 9) which would improve bap distribution considerably. At the moment it is far to heavily weighted for a goal scorer - especially if it goes in off his arse without even realising it 😛

Doos, I was just 15 when Fabregas left Arsenal. Now, I'm not sure how technically flawed he was, but Fabregas was someone I looked up to, the only person I respected so much after Henry.

Now, would Barcelona pay 40 million for him if he was crap? I don't think so. His leadership qualities were also a bonus.

If you build a team with the most owned players you get:

    Begovic
    Shawx, Baines, Ivan
    Bale, Michu, Fellaini, Mata
    RVP, Tevez, Lambert

    Bench: Jussi, Santi, Evra, O'Brien

The biggest surprise for me was shawx being the most owned defender (24.1%)

It's no more just a contact,or interest.Since yesterday an Arsenal bid is on Fiorentina's table:30m € for Jovetic, exactly the price tag

30m Euros!? He's good, but he's not that good.... yet.

He said the Napoli president confirms Napoli are in talks with City about Cavani and Dzeko earlier too.

The thing about Jovetic is he may not be worth 30m Euros yet but the potential is huge. If I recall correctly, Wenger missed out on signing Hazard for about £20m a couple of seasons back which obviously looks like a steal now.

hhmm...sounds like a lot of work. Especially since I'm the organiser. lol

For interest sake how is the £500 distributed between the various categories? Overall first prize(winner takes all or 1st/2nd/3rd?)

          £170 / £100 / £50 / £30 / £20

          £10 x 10 manager of the month

£30 highest score in a GW

You spend enough time on here so I'm sure you can do an update on a facebook group each week 😉

Manager of month money back opportunity. For example 25 players pay £20, ten manager of months leaving £300 for yourself 😉
