634x258 Season Review

He’d arrived at White Hart Lane with a real reputation as a goalscoring defender but Jan Vertonghen took some time to find his feet in the Premier League. Costing Tottenham in excess of Β£10m, the Belgian had racked up 21 goals and eight assists in the previous four seasons at Dutch outfit Ajax and was Andre Villas-Boas’ second signing since taking over the reins from Harry Redknapp last summer:

The Statistics

Vertonghen’s eye for goal had a real impact on his starting cost across the Fantasy games. In his debut season for the north London outfit, the versatile 26-year-old was slapped with a 6.5 price tag in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL), a clear reflection of his attacking performances prior to arriving on these shores.

After 16 league appearance, however, Fantasy faith had started to flounder. Vertonghen had found the net just once and with a single assist and two clean sheets also accrued over that period, his appeal took a real nosedive as we scoured the market for better value defensive options. As the season unfolded, though, the Belgian steadily picked up in performance and served up double figure hauls against both Liverpool and Swansea in March, despite failing to keep a clean sheet on either occasion.

By the time the campaign came to a close, Vertonghen had found the net five times – joint-top goalscoring defender along with Leighton Baines and Branislav Ivanovic – and fourth highest scorer for Villas-Boas’ side. With three assists, nine clean sheets and 12 bonus points also thrown in, he ended the season on 136 points – fifth top of the FPL defender standings and second only to Gareth Bale at the north London club.

The Prospects

A key member of the Tottenham first-team, Vertonghen missed just four league games last term, with his versatility also affording Villas-Boas the option of utilising him at left-back on a number of occasions. With the likes of William Gallas set to depart the Lane on a free transfer, it’s likely that Younes Kaboul, Michael Dawson and Steven Caulker may tussle it out for the remaining centre-back role alongside the Belgian, with Villas-Boas utilising two of the aforementioned trio when moving Vertonghen to full-back.

Certainly, his exploits from the previous campaign mean his price across the Fantasy games won’t drop – indeed, a shift to 7.0 in FPL wouldn’t be surprising. In terms of the Tottenham defence, much will depend on Villas-Boas’ plans; if Kyle Naughton ousts Benoit Assou-Ekotto in the left-back pecking order, he could offer a cut-price option, while Kaboul is set to drop in price after injuries limited him to a single appearance last time out. Although an upturn in defensive resilience at the Lane would certainly boost the value of Tottenham’s cheaper assets, it would also increase Vertonghen’s appeal further – his attacking exploits helped him finish a full 22 points clear of Kyle Walker, the second highest scoring Spurs defender last time out.

With David Moyes’ move to Man United raising question marks over both Leighton Baines and Patrice Evra, and with a new manager at Chelsea also bringing the game time of Ivanovic and David Luiz up for debate, the number of reliable premium priced defenders with the ability to serve up explosive points hauls could be restricted next time round. Vertonghen’s consistency of game time and strong form towards the end of the last campaign suggests he could be a major player in 2013/14 – with a season in the Premier League now behind him, he may even be ready to battle it out for a place at the summit of the defender standings across the Fantasy games.

    2013-14 Season.
Anyone else agree next year could be extremely tight at the top. The way I see it Utd will be weaker, City should be stronger, Chelsea will be stronger. Arsenal, Spurs and Liverpool will also be better I think and expect top 4 and one of those three could challenge for the title in my opinion.
This isn't being deliberately provocative but I genuinely think Utd could miss out on top 4, I definitely don't see them winning the title. A serious injury to RvP and I think they could struggle. I think:
Chelsea, City, Arsenal, for top 3 then 1 of Utd, Spurs, Liverpool for 4th.

If playing with a sweeper - the sweeper should be a very good player, and able to read the game & talk to the players.

Also no need foe defencive full backs - may want fitter players that can get up & down the pitch.

Yes...I played with a flat back four last night on a high line and then switched to two deeper CB's and two full backs pushing up (two hour game and an hour of each)...Their positioning is a bit crap so I thought playing a sweeper game or two would help them learn about not diving in and pushing players onto their weaker foot and positioning themselves better...stuff like that...

Unless got a player competent enough to play sweeper then its not recommended as you can fall into the trap of playing a back 5.....

Also the sweeper position comes a sacrifice to a player elsewhere so need to consider formation

the sweeper can aid training sessions - as should allow each CB to get man tight on a opposition front two. But when team in possession FB must push forward & CB split and sweeper step into the line, he must read and communicate to make sure all know what they are doing.

Yeah...agreed...The lads I play with aren't vocal enough between themselves and it's all a bit ragged...What you have described is exactly what I want them to work on...They'll never play with a sweeper but it will improve their play through training (I think/hope)..

I do a lot of coaching and have played a sweeper with success, but the full team needs to be considered eg 5-4-1, 3-1-4-1, 3-5-2, 5-3-2

In training sessions - try sticking the GK in sweeper role so he has to read and talk, plus use his feet to control & distribute (shrink goals to just a meter) and work the CBs to mark up & follow strikers.

Sitting down with them and showing them footage of solid defences and how the back line works together might help. It can give them a difference perspective and they might appreciate more each position within the back line other than just their role. Visual aids are powerful when learning.

spot on - visual aids combined with brief instruction before the session, during the session critical coach demo's a positive and a negative - using chaining technique so its clear then brief at the end short & sharp again with visual aids even if just a white board and scribbles!

Horrible to see CB's trying to play like that. Luiz is one of a kind and even he struggles to pull it off consistently.

Stam, Baresi, Koeman, Cannavaro are the ones to be.

Last night I played them as four at the back...we had a two hour match with the majority of attacking players on one side and the majority of defenders on the other.....For the first half we played a flat back four on a high line and then two deeper CB's and two full backs pushed up a bit for the second half...I'm just going through some ideas with them to see how they are comfortable playing and just explore a few options...The high line was as much for the benefit of the attacking players getting used to playing through balls to run onto and the defenders realising they are just not fit enough...YET...!!!

i'd advise only playing with one sweeper. so it's a sweeper stopper meaning your defense is sort of like this. allows the stopper and one of the backs to mark up the strikers and the sweeper sits in behind to clean up any through balls and cover if any of the defenders get beat. also means he can serve as a drop to switch the field when his side have possession. does that make sense?

            left back stopper right back

            sweeper

Yeah it does...when I said sweepers I meant taking turns so just one sweeper, obviously...It's only training so one of the CB's playing as sweeper for one half and the other for the other half....and i'll fill in...

                oh gotcha.

no have one CB play stopper while the other plays sweeper. the stopper position is critical because if he pushes too high up then you're essentially playing 3 in the back which puts you under a lot of pressure.

another thing you could try is 352 with two cdm's

He seems to be one of those players that my friends all think is amazing yet I doubt they've ever watched him play. I've seen him about 3 times and he's looked pretty good each time, decent movement and a handy finisher. His scoring rate in Serie A is pretty phenomenal which must say something, but again, I've never watched him for an extended period so can't give a proper opinion.

depends what you see happening. if you can see it being high scoring then you should go for a balance. if you see one team dominating the other then obviously load up on that team, same if you see one team grinding out a 1-0 result

Interesting discussion about the sweeper above. In a few hours I'll be managing my football team using a sweeper for the first time. I've been inspired with how City and Wigan have used Wing backs this season and it would suit my team as we play predominantly through the middle.

I'm looking to roll out a 5311 formation and the lads are aware of what they have to do. It will consist of 2 CB's and a sweeper and a narrow diamond in the midfield. This should hopefully help us dominate the central areas of the pitch where we've struggled in the past.

Formation with 3 at the back can be really usefull when you play against 4-3-3.
      Still 5-3-1-1 is too defensive.

I'm not sure if Wing backs count as a mid or a defender so equally it could be seen as a 3311 much like what Wigan use.

so it's essentially a 541 with a diamond midfield? you'l definitely control the middle of the pitch but you'll struggle for width as your wingbacks will be your only players out wide

p.s. are you planning on participating in the transfer window simulation game?

Yeah but we've hardly used width all season. I'm hoping the WB's will provide an out there. We are really a bunch of indoor players playing outdoor football so short passes through the middle is more our style.

At this stage I'm keen to take a break from any Fantasy game right now but we'll see. I might change my mind.

        Same style as Chelsea.
and Spurs use width in their game.

        is this a tournament?

you need tough, pace and solid right-wing player. Like Valencia, even though suck but can run forward and defence at the same time.

Yep that would be ideal. We certainly have a tough player at RWB who's reasonably quick but is a little too defensive minded at times. I'll just need to shout at him a lot to make sure he gets well forward.

Basically our WB's are a little inadequate in some ways but good in others. Thats what you get with a social team.

might as well give it a shot. the alternative is a 433 where the wing forwards and the outside backs give the width. and it still gives you 3 center mids for short passes through the middle

fair enough. it's not a fantasy game though, have a read through the rules at least and see what you think

The other thing is our CB's can be slow but pairing with a fast sweeper should help out in that area. We normally play a 433/451 formation with attacking wingers but we've noticed we rarely use them.

Of course I did a search but found nothing definitive so I asked here, if you've got nothing useful to say don't say it.
