Mourinho Back at the Bridge

As expected, Chelsea have confirmed the re-appointment of Jose Mourinho on a four-year contract. The Portuguese manager will return to Stamford Bridge after finishing his stint at Real Madrid only yesterday and fills the vacancy left by Rafa Benitez’s departure to Italian outfit Napoli.

The club’s Chief Executive, Ron Gourlay, announced earlier this afternoon:

“I am delighted to welcome Jose back to Chelsea. His continued success, drive and ambition made him the outstanding candidate.It is our aim to keep the club moving forward to achieve greater success in the future and Jose is our number one choice as we believe he is the right manager to do just that. He was and remains a hugely popular figure at the club and everyone here looks forward to working with him again.”

Mourinho will be presented to the press officially on Monday June 10 and his return to these shores will certainly add a little more spice to the Premier League as the Blues plot to overhaul both Manchester clubs at the top of the table. We’ll have more on Mourinho’s return to Stamford Bridge in a forthcoming “Moving Target†report later in the week.

          I quite like your approach. It's interesting that RVP and Bale come out so close together on that measurement. It's probably worth crunching the numbers for a larger list of players to get a feel for what a good ratio is, but I reckon anything more than about 1 is probably decent.

          Also, the ratio could change suddenly for an individual player depending on what threshold points figure you use for a successful captain pick. Everyone will have their own views on this - indeed it might vary from week to week depending on form and fixtures or how high scoring any particular week is.

            Can I make a suggestion here.

            An automation of the process would be to calculate standard deviation as before, and by assume normal distribution calculate the probability of exceeding a 6pt threshold in a given week. I think that would act as a measure of consistency, without having to add up scores manually.

              I've decided I'm not a fan of the standard deviation as a measurement of consistency, even if you're using it as the basis for some other calculation.

              The problem is that for a player with a high average score and the ability to score 10+ or even 20+ point gameweeks, you will naturally have a high standard deviation because the possible range of scores in any given gameweek is so much higher than a player who has a low average score. Players like Bale and RVP actually have a pretty high standard deviation because of this.

              Contrast to a defensive mid who only scores either 1, 2 or 3 points every week, they tend to have the lowest (i.e. best) standard deviation.

                I was just thinking the same as you describe Roscloa. There is a bit of a grey area, but generally spekaing you're going to be happy with 6-7 pts plus and unhapppy with 4-5 points or less.

                Once you convert it into a straight either / or option the simple ratio works rather well. It even has a clear meaning (> 1 means more hits than misses).

                Regardless of what Abramovich wants, things arent that rosy in Russia for him at the moment, so I wouldnt be so confident that he will be able to support Chelsea for that much longer.

      I would wait till isacki's interface goes live soon, and then join a team which is low on numbers. A few teams are going a bit OTT on recruiting and its best to avoid them now.
