HomeCrowd Is Live

HomeCrowd, the new Fantasy Football Scout comments system, is now live.

This is the culmination of around six months work by Ed, with design input from Will. I’d like to extend a big thanks to both for the time and effort they’ve put in to get HomeCrowd to this point.

We may experience some teething trouble. We may even have to roll back and rethink. We hope not, but we’re now at the point were we get the system out in the wild and see how it settles.

All being well, here’s a brief summary of what HomeCrowd means to the average Fantasy Football Scout visitor…

In terms of what you’ll see and experience, this should hopefully be business as usual with a few more bells and whistles.

You can now vote for comments and this will give a rating boost or penalty to the comment, the weighting of which depends on your reputation which is maintained behind the scenes. You earn reputation by earning votes and generally posting good stuff that gets recognition from the community and us contributors and moderators.

So voting adds rating and you can now sort an entire thread of comments by that rating. This allows you to quickly catch up on the days most valuable, significant, informative or perhaps entertaining discussions.

You can also go straight to the key stuff by viewing Hot Topics. You’ll see a new tab on the recent comments widget – click this and you’ll view the last ten Hot Topics. These are discussions singled out by mods and staff members because we feel there’s value in reading them or perhaps they include information that we want visitors to take in.

You can also view another user’s profile and your own profile by clicking a username or gravatar.

For now, that’s all that you’ll notice that’s different, aside from a few badges and the general design changes.

There are more features planned – this is our code so we can tailor this system to Fantasy Football Scout, act on feedback and work to make this a system that improves the community from this point.

Thank you for your patience and support. We hope you will enjoy using HomeCrowd.

If you want to see more on how HomeCrowd works without getting involved, here’s the preview movie we published earlier. Also, in case you missed Jonty’s article last week, we also published some new community guidelines which you can view right here.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

Agreed - some nice changes but the implementation could do with some UI refinements - arrows have way too much prominence. Need to be able to scan/read with as little interruption as possible - I suggest removing them all together unless you hover a post.

At the moment finding it slightly difficult to distinguish between comments and replies as the colours are quite similar, but I'm sure I'll get used to it 🙂

It looks nice and has seamlessly integrated, I can see this all improving the site. My one concern is, especially with the volume of users (and therefore trolls), the constant unnecessary upvoting and downvoting may become annoying. Love the idea of hot topics though, some posts every now and then really do need to be pointed out to everyone, including those who missed it.

I can immediately see the performance issues in HC.....Don't think it will be able to handle matchday discussion with those live feeds etc.

Have got service unavailable multiple times since HC became live. Or was all this due to the ongoing deployment?

Seems unnecessary to have to click through to a person's profile to then have to click on their team link. Possible development idea - show the user's current overall rank next to their name and rep level when they post, which is also a link to their team page... Thoughts?

Or maybe link the grav to the website link (if any), and keep the name linked to the profile, or vice versa? No point linking both to the profile.

said this before in another comment but didn't realize you had this hot topic so I'll repost here:

I mentioned this in the testing phase but not sure if you guys saw it or not. any way to put a click here to refresh in the orange bar at the bottom of the page? obviously you guys have other priorities at the moment but that's a nice little feature i'd love to have

also a bit more complicated but I remember someone else mentioning having the orange bar move up and down the page as you scroll.

love what you guys have so far and the orange bar is very helpful but just some thoughts that I hope you'll consider adding at some point

      other thoughts:

      - the profile page looks brilliant!
      - it's weird having the post comment on the left, wish it was on the right
      - glad the email notification feature works

that's it for now, if I think of anything else i'll just come back here and post it

if you are here Mark and co.

i just love what you guys have done but one minor addition that i would love to see is that when we refresh a page, the new comments made to be highlighted so that people don't need to go through the entire page to see what's new.
i know there are other issues to be dealt with but maybe you can look into this sometime in the near future.

      cheers!

Yeah just sharpening the colours a little would be great. I'm colour blind so they're a bit hard to distinguish for me. If there could just be a bit more contrast to make them stand out a little it'd be great.

Loving the new design, great work so far and membership money well spent!
      A couple of early thoughts:

      1. Is it possible to have just the comments section of the main page refresh and not the whole page? The recent comments now scroll anyway so no need for a total refresh?
      2. A user directory page? option to filter by rank/user name/joined date/etc?
      3. A scrolling twitter feed below selection factors? could be populated by a list like Demi's https://twitter.com/Demil1990/fpl-shizzle or a selection of sporting sources
      4. A way to notify a user you are directing a message to them? like @ on twitter? maybe a little popup on their screen? @TORRESMAGIC™ @MARK

      Great work so far though

          6. Automatically open a link in a new tab.

            7. Is it possible for The comments section: Recent Comments/Hot Topics to hover?
so that it scrolls down the page with you?

        8. Voting up or down on a post is a way of favouriting it.
Would it be possible that there could be a "favourite" section in your profile?
I would prefer to use it as a way to bookmark a post on the site?

I'm in Japan and I like the new time stamps better. Now I can instantly figure out how long ago something was posted, instead of calculating each and every time. I recommend you use another service to find out what the time is in the UK, or purchase one of these: http://i01.i.aliimg.com/wsphoto/v0/611391337_1/Free-ship-New-Business-style-Military-Men-s-Quartz-Wrist-watch-3-Time-zone-3GMT-.jpg

Hi mark (hope you see this as it's wayyy after the OP)

      - Not much to say about the whole commenting system, just hope that the upvoting/downvoting thing doesn't become a moral hazard like what most people have discussed already.

      - Also, scrolling through everything was exhausing. Still as exhausting as the previous system, but I guess things can only be improved 1 step at a time, and everyone else seems to be ok with it anyway.

      Hope you are doing well.

I apologize if it's been mentioned already, but when the "There have been X new comments since you last refreshed."-thingy pops up, I feel the urge to click it and then have these comments automatically appear on the page. That is, without having to refresh the whole page it updates just like the one on the side when I click the orange-message-thing.

I see huge potential in the ability to sort by sticky and by rating, but when you do that you also get all the replies. This makes it hard to pick out the good posts from the bad.

You can change the "show comments by default", but if you click "hide" or "show" under the individual comments it takes you back to the latest comments page (although I think this is just an IE9 issue (the "show" and "hide" buttons work in Chroome in my Xperia Z, but here the problem is that they're hover button which is tricky on a touch screen).

It would be excellent if it was possible to prune the reply tree, for example so that only the most recent 10 replies showed, or only replies that have been upvoted or only replies on discussion branches that you have been involved in.

Also, if someone makes a great contribution, but they do so in reply rather than a new comment, does this show up under the discussion rating? Or will this quality get lost in the noise? Likewise if there's a negative reply to a good comment do we have to either get it modded or put up with it? There's no other way of filtering it out?

      Gravatars failing

Mark, The only thing I can see is my e-mail address used by my profile here has a few capital letters while the Gravatar isn't. When I go to update the e-mail in my profile to not use any capitals, it says it's used by another account. There seems to be a few posters around struggling so I doubt it will be something to do with Gravatar itself

Is there anyway to maybe darken the "Average Votes" number as oppose to the light grey? Might be just my pc but it seems very faint. Oh and maybe show Posts more distinct from Replies? Hard to distinguish replies from new posts. Just my two cents worth 🙂 great stuff though I love it!

Sorry if already mentioned, but I would like to add a single point.

I gave all the new functions a try and settled for my preferred new way of browsing the site. On viewing a new article, I basically automatically sort the comments by discussion rating and leave the "Show comments replies by default" unticked.
I scan the posts and click show comments on those posts I find interesting.

A decision was made it seems, that at this point, it is better to show me only the replies to the original post and not the whole comment tree, ie. all comments regardless of them being made as replies to the original post or to other comments in this post. I believe that makes it harder for me to follow the discussion, and makes me cruise over comments to the post with the cursor to see which comments have additional replies and click to show those as well. I find myself doing that automatically for the whole discussion, because it rarely makes sense to me otherwise. I have already made the decision to review the discussion below the post once, I feel like I'm made to perform 10 more actions for a decision I made with the first click.

In short, I believe it would be better if the user action "show comments", clicked under the post, showed the entire comment tree bellow that post and not only the direct replies to the post.

I see the reasoning behind the decision but I feel all the comments bellow a post constitute a discussion that can't really be segregated in different groups so that it would still make sense.

Otherwise I see a marked improvement in usability, useful data aggregation and review, better community standards and practices and overall bigger bang for my buck.

Salutations to all of you, I'm a happy supporter.

Good feedback...yeah...this is my view too. I'll get Ed to look at this - there was a complication but I'm a supporter of the open all replies too. Might be a while before we can hit this one but I will get it looked at. Thanks for the kind words of support too.

as im scrolling down comments, the page keeps jumping back to the top of the article - rather annoying! might just be my browser (old IE8 here at work)

Mighty congratulations are in order, as FFS has turned over another leaf in its history books.

The Hot Topics feature is my favorite. Absolutely convenient to catch up on the good discussions over the course of the day. The very fact that this discussion is still alive shows this is a big hit already.

My only real concern is on the down vote button and its potential to eradicate any criticism. It was my casual observation (so may be wrong) that all criticism to people's comments and the post itself wasn't quite welcome. Whilst I understand its important not to have negativity floating around, it forms a really important part of FPL and the forum. I fear that people will cease to cast any honest criticism on say RMTs or feedback on certain topic. Criticism (mostly bad) has often been the fuel of good banter, so I'm hoping we won't get to miss this. The human touch is what made this forum extra special for me over any other online forum. I guess its something you might have already considered, but just thought I'd share.

Love how the comments seem to be rewarded a lot through votes, stickies and hot topics. Seems to have massively increased the quality of the comments posted (did a grammar check before posting myself). Wondering if it's possible to sticky or hot topic good replies too? It would be fantastic if its possible, but this isn't really a priority.

Overall. Thoroughly impressed and grateful for everything that has gone into this piece of art. I can only imagine how much time and effort has been invested behind the scenes.

      Thank you so much Scouts!

Don't like how you have to hover underneath the comments to see if there are replies to that status. It would be better to show this instead of the time and date when the post was posted which seems pointless.

I just wanted to draw your attention to the page controls at the foot of the page.

      http://i.imgur.com/JWGjeCn.jpg

The green of the sticky posts/hot topics really stands out nicely against the grey and white backdrop of the site. The same with the 'post comment' banner.

I just think the page controls look a bit weak in colour against the light background. The grey banner looks fine but I think you should reverse the colours of the page controls so they are predominantly green with white lettering/numbering and the current page icon should be white with a green number.

Small detail but I think it would add to the aesthetics.

Is it possible to show the date and time that a comment was posted instead of x minutes ago? Because if you are reading a long page of comments then that x minutes ago is incorrect. The datetime is a fixed constant that is easier to trust than x minutes ago.
