HomeCrowd, the new Fantasy Football Scout comments system, is now live.

This is the culmination of around six months work by Ed, with design input from Will. I’d like to extend a big thanks to both for the time and effort they’ve put in to get HomeCrowd to this point.

We may experience some teething trouble. We may even have to roll back and rethink. We hope not, but we’re now at the point were we get the system out in the wild and see how it settles.

All being well, here’s a brief summary of what HomeCrowd means to the average Fantasy Football Scout visitor…

In terms of what you’ll see and experience, this should hopefully be business as usual with a few more bells and whistles.

You can now vote for comments and this will give a rating boost or penalty to the comment, the weighting of which depends on your reputation which is maintained behind the scenes. You earn reputation by earning votes and generally posting good stuff that gets recognition from the community and us contributors and moderators.

So voting adds rating and you can now sort an entire thread of comments by that rating. This allows you to quickly catch up on the days most valuable, significant, informative or perhaps entertaining discussions.

You can also go straight to the key stuff by viewing Hot Topics. You’ll see a new tab on the recent comments widget – click this and you’ll view the last ten Hot Topics. These are discussions singled out by mods and staff members because we feel there’s value in reading them or perhaps they include information that we want visitors to take in.

You can also view another user’s profile and your own profile by clicking a username or gravatar.

For now, that’s all that you’ll notice that’s different, aside from a few badges and the general design changes.

There are more features planned – this is our code so we can tailor this system to Fantasy Football Scout, act on feedback and work to make this a system that improves the community from this point.

Thank you for your patience and support. We hope you will enjoy using HomeCrowd.

If you want to see more on how HomeCrowd works without getting involved, here’s the preview movie we published earlier. Also, in case you missed Jonty’s article last week, we also published some new community guidelines which you can view right here.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

Great to finally see HC going live, it's been well needed.

Hopefully no more pages and pages of spam and rubbish from some posters, and more interesting and informative discussions.

Well done to all scouts, and good look to all the new mod's

Remember we get an extra 5.0 to spend. So could go all out on the expensive ones. Although I will probalby keep Pedersen and get Wij, he seems to shoot whenever he's got the chance, great fantasy-asset.

still think de Jong is a better option than Wijnaldum. He has scored a couple of goals but if better teams close him down properly then he won't have the opportunity to have these long range efforts.

    HC feedback with IE9:

When not in compatability mode, scout picks/comments/ticker/watchlist are not displayed on the right hand side of page (they are displayed below "post comment"), up/down vote buttons displayed correctly.

When in compatability mode, scout picks/comments/ticker/watchlist are displayed correctly on the right hand side of page, but up/down vote buttons not displayed.

Anyone have the same problems? Have to use IE9 at work...

Makes me all panicky that I've missed something so I refresh the page only to realise that I hadn't finished reading the comment I was on meaning that I missed something and I become all panicky.

    Bloody hell.

Spanish midfielder Cesc Fabregas tells Marca he wants to stay at Barcelona.

The 26-year-old former Arsenal midfielder has been linked with a return to England.

"I have not opened my mouth once," Fabregas told Marca when asked about the link back to the Premier League.

"It has taken a lot for me to get where I am and I am not thinking about throwing it all away for nothing.

"If they (Barcelona) said that they didn't want me that would be another thing. What I really want is to triumph at Barca - that has been my dream since I was small."

Don't want to jump the gun on Greenwindmill's more comprehensive analysis but I thought I'd look into the benefits of keeper rotation. Looked at Bego and Jussi, as the much vaunted perfect rotation pair this season.

    Whole season:
    Bego every week = 144
    Jussi every week = 144
    Rotating = 146

    First half of the season:
    Bego every week = 89
    Jussi every week = 74
    Rotating = 85

Conclusion. Despite what everyone said, rotating Bego & Jussi last season just wasn't that great. I'll have to look at other keeper pairs but right now, I'm thinking I won't bother with rotation this year. I'll get a good lower mid-price and play them every week until Jan WC and then swap for a big team keeper.

That's interesting, thanks Doos. It would be useful to compare with previous seasons but I can't be bothered to dig out the results 🙂

The rotation I measured wasn't purely H&A, it was what a sane person would choose each week - i.e. choosing Nor(A) over Che(H)

Sorry Doos but that sounds like meaningless guff to me. Are you saying that when you rotate keepers you would choose United at home over Reading away? Of course not. You need to measure the numbers you would have realistically got if you'd chosen to rotate.

I really don't see how it's useful to know what a keeper combination would have got you if you'd played them in a pattern that you know you wouldn't have chosen. What insight have you gained there, beyond some academic notion of H&A performance?

But actually, I'm playing with you a little. I did also run the numbers for strict H&A rotation:

                Whole season:
                Bego every week = 144
                Jussi every week = 144
                Rotating = 141

                First half of the season:
                Bego every week = 89
                Jussi every week = 74
                Rotating = 77

So it's about the same 😀

New manager, new style, possibly new keeper.

Next season's Stoke away form may not play out 'as per normal'.

This took a little digging but in reply to keeper rotation Stoke for the last 6 seasons have the following cs h/a starting from this season 7/5, 6/3, 6/3, 7/7, 9/3.

Basically while this season was skewed a little something similar (but more pronounced) happened in 09/10.

I think that's a little harsh - I'd say Roscola's figures are based on 'the reasonable person' test which probably more accurately reflects how people actually rotate their keepers. I know I don't play the home goalkeeper 100% of the time.

Not really - Roscola isn't saying he took the best possible outcome of the rotation, i.e. looking at each goalkeeper's score in a given week and choosing the higher one. That would be after the event.

He's chosen the goalkeeper he would reasonably have chosen at the time based on the fixture difficulty.

Seems like the best way to measure the benefits of rotation to me.

If you switched Bego for someone else in the second half of the season, you would do fairly well with rotation.

I'm thinking on the lines of rotation first half of the season followed by one of the top4 keepers in the second half once i've built up value.

But home away isn't the thumb rule always i reckon. I do take fixtures into account.

            If Jussi has LIV
            and Bego has rdg

            I'd select Bego.

Ah, very interesting read then. But then, you choosing two keepers also acts an insurance. In the sense that if one of the teams does very poorly in the first half of the season or so, or is going through a bad patch of form, you have your other keeper.

This won't be the case if you go with just one mid-price.

And you don't want to use up an early season transfers on keepers.

Liverpool is probably not a good example Jussi had an outstanding game in a 0-0 draw at Anfield (admittedly James Collins was good too)

While Stoke beat Reading 2-1 at home & drew 1-1 away

Yes last season's results are not fair compared to the on average score & yes Liverpool did win 3-2 at West Ham. The points I am trying to make are:

Liverpool are not a lethal strike force clean sheets are quite probable against them

Fixtures are not a strong barometer in isolation

You're coming at this from an entirely different angle to my analysis so this is gold in my opinion, especially if you're going to look at other combinations.

One question - are your rotation figures based on pure home/away rotation?

Not purely H&A, just what I know I would have chosen in any given week. That ended up choosing home fixture if no standout option but obviously choose Nor(A) rather than Che(H)

Good topic for the off-season Roscola.

I would argue that there is no hard-and-fast rule regarding what is better our of rotating cheap keepers or sticking in a more expensive keeper every week. I think it often depends on the type of rotation (i.e. home/away only or more flexible based on fixture difficulty) and patterns in the defensive returns of the teams the keepers play for.

For example, two cheap keepers who rotate well home/away and are solid at home defensively would be a good bet to match/outscore a more defensive keeper who you would play all week. The problem is, such a pair rarely exists. The theory is solid but you have to look at the individual rotating pair.

It's also worth point out that you don't have to stick with the same tactic/combination all season. I've seen analyses done to suggest that top teams keep more clean sheets towards the end of the season and starting with a couple of cheaper keepers and changing in January is the best option IMO.

The pricing of Ruddy will be crucial this season. If he comes in at £5m or less, I'd feel quite confident finding another cheap keeper (£4.5m ideally) who covers his bad fixtures and playing Ruddy most weeks

My take on the cheap keeper vs expensive keeper is that because the FPL scoring discriminates in favour of attacking mids and forwards, you need to be looking at value for your backline and keepers, otherwise you are apportioning your budget suboptimally. I therefore think expensive keepers are rarely worth their premium price.

By value, I mean FPL points per £ of investment. Have a look at last season's goalkeeper breakdown based on price and value:

        http://i.imgur.com/qyQXYbF.png?1

On this basis the best keepers, as measured by FPL points per £, are clearly at the mid to lower price range and I wouldn't be paying more than 5.0 for a keeper (ideally no more than 9.5 for both keepers).

Was last season an aberration? I doubt it, there are always value keepers who become apparent as the season progresses (e.g. Vorm in 2011/12). If you get the wrong combination at the start of the season it may even be worth burning a transfer to get on the right train.

Excellent post backed up by some lovely stats. I don't suppose you're able to do a similar graphical analysis but looking purely pre and post January? There's a case to be made that switching to a more expensive goalkeeper on your January wildcard is the way to go - certainly something I'm considering.

Difficult to do on the same chart, so I've taken starting price out of the graph and plotted FPL points per £ starting price H1 v H2:

            http://i.imgur.com/LQ81Yxh.png?1

The diagonal line is a unity line not a line of best fit. So those furthest from the line (e.g. Begovic) showed the biggest difference between H1 and H2.

I suppose this shows that the best move in retrospect was to rotate at the half way point from Begovic to Jaaskelainen or Schwarzer, but it's also interesting that Hart became much more of a value proposition in the second half of the season, despite his premium price.

So as a crude rule the budget keepers are on the 'early season' side of the line and the more expensive on the 'late season' side? This is really useful stuff, nicely done.

It would appear so - Hart, DDG, Szczesney all showed better form in the second half. I'm not sure why that would represent a trend - Cech, for example was slightly better in the first half.

So I'm not convinced the tactic of going with a cheapy then switching to a premium keeper is a valid one - I would need to look at more seasons to get a feel for it, but unfortunately I don't have the data for previous seasons.

In terms of affordibility though, it makes some sense since you would have more of a budget constraint in the earlier part of the season.

Yes perhaps they become a bit more affordable thanks to team values rising, but I don't think this is enough to offset the fact that the FPL point scoring inherently discriminates against keepers.

e.g. my chart shows Hart becoming a more viable proposition in the second half, but he's still only scoring at 12.7 points per £ of initial cost in the second half of last season. If you look at all player positions, that's still very poor. At the other end of the scale for example, Lambert was scoring at over 30 points per £ initial cost.

The question I'm interested in is why would it be the case that premium keepers show better form in the second half of the season? Was this just statistical noise last season or is there some reason for why it would be a trend?

That would be asking a lot 🙂

Anecdotal evidence over the last few seasons is that the top teams tighten up towards the end of the season - your analysis goes some way to supporting this. I am not the brightest around so thats probably why I don't get that graph 100% ros. Could you put the gk in twice into a graph under different colour coding for first half and second half so we could see their value in each half?

Yes I could, but I'm at work at the moment and I've only got Excel available which I am not a fan of using for charting purposes. I generally prefer Tableau, so I might give this a go after work.

Right, on the off chance you or anyone else is still following this thread, here's a Tableau version of my original chart, with H1 and H2 shown on the same page:

                    http://public.tableausoftware.com/views/GoalkeepersFPLpointsperstartingprice201213/Sheet1?:embed=y&:display_count=no

To be honest, I'm not sure you gain much by showing it this way.

"I've seen analyses done to suggest that top teams keep more clean sheets towards the end of the season and starting with a couple of cheaper keepers and changing in January is the best option IMO."

Hmm I have never considered that before normally just rotate the cheap ones all season

Although I was rather close to trade in DDG just had other issues to resolve first...I kept saying United are going to go on a clean sheet run.

Good to see someone who has done analysis. It is a strong consideration for the Winter Wildcard or thereabouts.

Personally I keep rotating cheapies in goal because of the save points and bulk up my defensive line massively instead. Not sure you have the budget available for both and I see the defense as more worthy as certain big teams get goals from their defence such as Chelsea and United.

Good point - as long as you have confidence in a nailed on option this is probably the best way to go.

It depends on how the different positions scale with value as the season changes. I have a feeling that the improvement of big budget defenders is better than the improvement of big budget keepers. Need to actually analyse that though.

After that I have about a month before starting work so..... plenty of time to run some analysis of that sort. Might be wise to start collecting a list of hypotheses to test. hmm new post required

GreenWindmill will like this one 😀

I had a look at GW's and my Foster/Bego partnership. For the first 10 weeks – before Foster got injured – it worked very well, but broke down over the remainder of the season.

      First 10 weeks:
      Foster every week = 41
      Bego every week = 40
      Rotating = 47

      Fixtures chosen etc here: http://puu.sh/3dfso.png

I was actually disciplined with it and stuck almost completely to strict home/away with that pair as that was my entire basis for the partnership.

Came unstuck in the Liverpool-Stoke game but other than that it was lovely 🙂

Haha - you did alright out of Ruddy I seem to remember!

I'm waiting for the fixtures but I have the same home/away clean sheet stats (now for the last 4 seasons) as well as the caliber of opposition those clean sheets came against, based upon the final league positions. So a clean sheet against Man Utd got a score of 1, Man City 2, etc.

Mostly white noise in the stats but some stand out - Fulham's clean sheets were horrible to try to predict for instance, may steer clear until I see some more consistent form.

I did do rather well. Got 35 points for the first 7 GWs, 1 off of the best possible!! Then sold Ruddy before 7, 3, 7, 6, 10, 4 ... lol

                  You got 36 ... grrr

No reason at all why a new poster can't immediately receive positive votes for their comment and even get a sticky/hot topic.

Comments don't get sorted according to the poster's reputation - they can be sorted by date, stickies first or by discussion rating. These are independent of the poster's reputation.

            Pretty much.

Also, comments are auto-moderated if they hit a certain threshold of negative votes. That threshold is high though so it needs to have been downvoted by a significant section of the community.

I think the most ridiculous transfer rumour this morning is Schneider to Chelsea. He really hasn't got what it takes to succeed in the premier league these days. You don't have to be some sort of super fit Dynamo to succeed in England. Berbatov is one example, Prosinecki is another.

Also a bit harsh to criticize his ambition, he's already played at some of biggest clubs in the world and won leagues, cups and the CL. It's not like he went to Dubai or China, Gala were in the CL.

How many on here see a future for Rooney in United as the striker?

I really can't seem to fit him in. RvP first choice on top, then Chico and Welbeck. In the hole there can be no one but Kagawa. So should Rooney just start playing alongside Carrick in the midfield for good? Or on the wing? Or do you have other solutions?

The second striker will always be his best position imo. Problem is his form/fitness.

Two strikers and a diamond-formation then?

He should leave imo, or he will regret it.

He will be competing with Kagawa like last season. You might remember that Kagawa was often on the bench.

I finally realised something. To get stickied, you need to post something about keeper rotation.

thoughs about McClean in new season?

before of this season manny of us has predicted that he would be bnrillinat budget opštion (as he proved himslef in season earlier) but it turned down to be one of the biggest flops of the season in my opinion

maybe with new coach he could shine again?

Lets hope so. I'm just not sure about Sunderland atm. And they have a lot of midfield options.
