Scout Report – Jesus Navas

Manchester City continued to add to their first-team squad yesterday with the acquisition of Jesus Navas from Sevilla. The 27-year-old, who is currently in the US with the Spain squad ahead of this month’s Confederation Cup, is City’s second big-money signing in the past week after Brazilian midfielder Fernandinho arrived at the Etihad from Shakhtar Donetsk:

With Manuel Pellegrini expected to be announced as the new City manager by tomorrow, City’s pre-season plans are beginning to pick up pace following the dismissal of Roberto Mancini towards the end of the previous campaign. In an interview with the club’s official website, Navas – who is believed to have been cost City a fee in the region of £15m – went on to say:

“Manchester City is an exciting project and this is the right moment for me to take this step. I’m very happy with the opportunity and the decision. The Premier League is a competition where the football is very fast and will suit the way I play. I’m really looking forward to it. I’m going to a great club in England and I want to continue developing my game there. The club has put a lot of faith in me and I want to repay them out on the pitch.”

The History

A product of the Sevilla Youth Academy, Navas joined his hometown club at the age of 15 and made his first-team debut three years later at the end of the 2003-04 season. Firmly established as a regular by 2005-06, the winger has spent a total of 10 campaigns at the La Liga outfit, starting 30 or more times in all but one of the previous five seasons, when injury curtailed his game time over 2009-10.

Navas arrives at City on the back of a less-than-prolific campaign. The winger failed to find the net at all last season and supplied just six assists as Sevilla finished ninth in the table but there’s no doubt his creativity from the flank has been crucial to his side in recent years. In three of the last five seasons, he’s provided 13 or more assists and overall, has chipped in with 24 goals and 62 assists over 276 La Liga appearances.

In terms of silverware, Navas won six major trophies over his time with Sevilla – two UEFA Cups, a UEFA Super Cup, two Spanish Cups and a Spanish Super Cup. He’s also represented his country on 23 occasions, producing two goals and six assists, and has helped his nation to the 2010 World Cup, with the European Championship following a couple of years later.

The Prospects

Navas’ arrival certainly looks likely to afford City an extra dimension on the flanks. While the likes of David Silva, Samir Nasri and James Milner were utilised out wide by Roberto Mancini, none of the trio possess the speed and directness of the new boy – with Fernandinho also bringing a more dynamic edge to central midfield, the former champions seem set for an evolution under the incoming Pellegrini, with a much-needed injection of pace throughout the team.

Both Silva and Nasri may possess the trickery but both had a tendency to move into the middle when on the ball, with City all-too-often lacking any real width. Opponents were able to nullify the danger by packing the middle of the park in Mancini’s final season as his side became a little too predictable in possession – having scored 93 times in their title-winning 2011/12, City found the net just 66 times last term.

Navas’ introduction is clearly part of a tactical plan to utilise the width more efficiently, creating space and stretching opponents’ backlines, which, from a Fantasy perspective, will hopefully be good news after the disappointment of the previous campaign. In terms of Navas as an individual prospect, however, he’ll find it difficult to persuade us to initially invest, given that Silva, Yaya Toure and potentially Nasri will also be vying for our attentions in the City midfield.

Furthermore, his price isn’t likely to be cheap across the Fantasy games, with a cost of 8.5 to 9.5 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL) anticipated. With Gareth Bale, Theo Walcott, Juan Mata and Eden Hazard all offering explosive potential in the premium bracket, it seems, in all likelihood, there will be better value to be found for our five man midfields as we look to balance budgets.

Ironically, the introduction of Navas and a more expansive style of play could, in turn, bring Sergio Aguero back onto our Fantasy radars. Having started 2012/13 costing 11.5 in FPL, the Argentine could conceivably drop to 10.5 or 11.0, potentially making him a viable option once again for those unwilling to fork out the expected 13.5 for Robin Van Persie. If he can overcome the serious bouts of homesickness that have blighted his international career, Navas has the potential to be a major player for City next term, though whether he can persuade Fantasy managers he’s worthy of a place looks another matter altogether.

I think it was around 13th July via Twitter, on a daily basis.

Then they released the full price list about 20th July, before the FPL site actually opened.

1 week before the game lauch. I remember they leaked 2 or 3 prices every day. Then made the whole list available 3 days before the launch. I remember people on FFS had put together spreads sheets with player values....... it was madness.

    #Fellaini #ARS #CFC #MCI

Everton football club have agreed permission for Marouane Fellaini to start discussing personal terms with Arsenal football club and believe the player will be offered around 70k a week. The player is willing to join Arsenal but Everton are hoping a last minute bid from Chelsea or Manchester city so they can maximise Fellaini value. 🙂

Just found this on my laptop. My first 7 GW scoring break up.

    Defence - 27 + 22 + 13 + 19 + 29 + 10 + 22 = 142 (34%)
    Mid - 36 + 31 + 19 + 15 + 12 + 13 + 30 = 156 (38%)
    Forwards - 26 + 22 + 31 + 6 + 15 + 9 + 9 = 118 (28%)

I went in with 2 x 6.5 + 1 x 5.5 and this allowed me the good share of points i got early season (i did get a good start) and the formation i played generally was 3-4-3. Something to ponder about maybe.

Interesting that would be too much spending at the back for me.

My current thinking is having Cech and a 4.0 keeper, a city defender(probably Nasty), two defenders in the shaw/clyne/riether/santon type (hopefully 4.5) and two 4.0s from newly promoted teams or under-priced players

This is exactly opposite to what my team. My defence this season was horrible, and I averaged 1 cs every 3.4 players (I normally played 3 at the back). Horrible...

I also worked out that using a two keeper system rotation, I was wrong 15 times out of 38. I rotated Bego and Howard first half of the season and Bego and Bunn for the second. I would have earned an extra 30 points if I kept Begovic for the entire season and not rotated. Food for thought!

i remember having 2 @ 6.5 mids was the optimal strategy to start because it would allow for downgrading.

i.e. Michu, Pienaar, Nolan, Larsson, AJ, Fellaini, MacLean

not at all.....it was coined the "6.5 Mid Strategy" on here. Because there were so many "decent" players valued at 6.5 or less, the thought process was to have 2 @ 6.5 to allow for downgrade. If i recall Swa had easy fixtures to start, it was a "calculated punt".

Danny Graham was my Swansea pick for last season. Five-nil thrashing of QPR (I think) and couldn't get on the end of anything. Nothing- Nada- ZIilch.

Yes I will do. Obviously depends on how Pellegrini deploys him. If Navas, Silva and Nasri all start then I don't see that Yaya will have that much freedom.

Kagawa hoping to emulate Rooney and Van Persie

Manchester United midfielder Shinji Kagawa wants to focus his efforts on becoming a more influential figure at Old Trafford next season.

"I wasn't satisfied with my overall performance but I played well in the second half of the season and started to get more and more confidence," Kagawa told Sports Illustrated.

"Hopefully, I can keep that going at the Confederations Cup.

"In this business, you need to be like Wayne Rooney or Robin van Persie and prove yourself if you want the ball. I want to be a player like them, which means I need results."

There are a number of players who I think will improve next season. Hazard is one, Kagawa is another. If he can nail down the role he played in Germany then he could be a fantastic option. Pre season will be crucial.

Posted this yesterday. I really do love Kagawa and hope he can nail down the role he was bought for (i.e. behind the striker) I really don't believe we have seen the best of him yet, this could be his season. I intend on having him in my GW1 team. We only really saw him at his best towards the end of last season. if he can stay injury free he could be huge for us

been wanting to post this for a bit, but there's been so many great discussions on here that I just had to reply to.

Anyway, apparently Sky Bet have suspended betting on Garay to Man Utd. I'm not sure on this move tbh. Is a cb really what we need? The only logic I can apply to this deal is that, with Varela also signing as cover for Rafa, we can use Smalling at cb and allow Jones to go into midfield, otherwise we're heavily over-covered in the cb department with Rio (though perhaps he won't be a regular starter anymore) Vidic, Evans, Jones and Smalling.

Or is it the sort of thing where Monaco / PSG come knocking for Vidic and MUFC decide to cash in on an injury prone 31 year old? All wild speculation but if the Garay story materializes, it wouldn't shock me.

Always sceptical of betting being suspended on moves since the betting was suspended on Wolves' manager Glenn Hoddle becoming out next manager years ago. Sometimes I think Sky may have a conflict of interests when running betting markets on news they are generating ....

fair points, and very possible, also possible Monaco might swoop to take Evra back. We also have Fabio coming back from loan, so I'd be interested to see where he fits in, look at what regular first team football has done for his brother

Yeah seems very odd. Given that they already have so much squad depth I wouldv'e said that ~£50m ought to have been splurged on a marquee signing. For all Levy's talk about playing hardball, I reckon Spurs would seriously consider £50m for Bale.

Do you mean A power 5 or THE power 5?

Michu will be too expensive and probably classed as a forward anyway
Fellaini will be too expensive (especially if he's at Arsenal) and wants to be a DM anyway

But going 3-5-2 with the likes of Kagawa, Coutinho, Hazard etc could be an option if those big striker signings don't materialise

I don't think he'll be at United next year, I think we can get a bit of money from now and should before his form of two seasons ago is but a distant memory.

    3-5-2 or 3-4-3?

Going to be tricky to choose which formation to go for next season.....

Given how well the midfielders did last season, I might go heavy on them to start off with.

    Thoughts from the community?

3-4-3 is the go-to FPL formation. I had 3-5-2 for most of last season but at this stage I'd just say that's an abberation.

Agreed. When you look at last year, Arsenal, Spurs, Chelsea, Everton, (possibly also Man City) didn't have a striker in form. Surely that'll change this season.

Biggest problem with 3-5-2 is the price of your first sub. The cheapest strikers are ~£1m more than than the cheapest mids so you end up with less to spend on your first 11. That's not such a problem later in the season when we all have extra budget but at the start it's a big handicap.

This topic is hot hot hot.

I'd definitely lean towards 3-4-3 after trialling 3-5-2 at the best possible time for a while, in the January wc. There are almost always at least 3 strikers in form - can't say the same of 5 midfielders.

You'll probably end up playing both, depends on how your team looks each week, rotating a third striker with 2 midfielders will be quite common I think.
