Pre-Season

Sleeper – Younes Kaboul

It was a season to forget for Younes Kaboul last time round after injuries sidelined the centre-half for all but one of Tottenham’s league fixtures. Having featured in the first XI on 33 occasions under Harry Redknapp in 2011/12, the Frenchman looked to have finally established himself as a White Hart Lane regular but after sustaining a knee injury in Andre Villas-Boas’ first match in charge of the north London outfit, he failed to appear again:

Initially expected to be absent for just four months, Kaboul’s rehabilitation was a somewhat protracted affair and allowed Michael Dawson the chance to forge a partnership with Jan Vertonghen in the heart of the Tottenham back-four. Eventually returning in April, the Frenchman was handed a series of reserve team outings in order to build up his match-fitness but broke down once again, with a thigh strain suffered against Man United in the middle of the month.

With the likes of Steven Caulker and William Gallas also offering centre-half alternatives, Villas-Boas took no more risks with Kaboul’s fitness for the run-in – the Frenchman didn’t feature in the first-team squad again as Spurs’ bid for a Champions League spot was ultimately denied on the final day of the campaign by bitter rivals Arsenal.

The Prospects

A fully-fit Kaboul may well be an intriguing prospect for Fantasy managers next time round. With five centre-halves at his disposal last summer, Villas-Boas was prepared to sell Dawson to QPR until the Frenchman’s knee injury and while the Spurs boss has since acknowledged such a move would have been a mistake, it remains to be seen whether the former Nottingham Forest man can keep his place ahead of Kaboul in Villas-Boas’ plans.

Assessing the options for 2013/14, Villas-Boas has already allowed Gallas to leave after deciding against renewing his contract. While Caulker started 17 league games last term, it’s noticeable that he featured only seven times in the final 19 Gameweeks, as he fell behind Dawson in the pecking order. The latter, on the other hand, started 20 of the club’s final 21 fixtures but bearing in mind that Spurs registered just five clean sheets over that period, Kaboul’s installation alongside Vertonghen would afford a little more mobility in the heart of defence and improve their prospects of keeping out opponents.

Certainly, a drop in price looks on the cards across the Fantasy games next time round for Kaboul. Having started the previous campaign at 5.5 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL), there’d be no surprise to see him slip to 5.0 – Dawson’s 2012/13 starting cost – and, while the likes of Kyle Walker and Vertonghen offer greater security of game time, their premium prices may well deter Fantasy managers as we look to balance our opening budgets.

While Kaboul may not quite rival Vertonghen for goal threat, the Frenchman arguably offers more in the opponents box that Dawson and, if he can establish a run of starts, Fantasy managers will anticipate some return to compliment any clean sheets that come his way. Granted, with eight shut-outs over 2012/13, Spurs were hardly the most reliable investment when it came to defensive returns but as Villas-Boas looks to tweak his first-team options for his second season in charge, Kaboul could prove a real value option should he manage to steer clear of the Tottenham treatment room.

Agreed. In Vertonghen, Kaboul and Caulker Spurs have three of the best CBs in terms of goalscoring

Highly mobile CB's too which works really well with their high line. Spurs must have the most appropriate set of CB's in the league, by which I mean you couldnt really improve on them given the football style of Spurs under AVB.

Can anyone actually see Kaboul being nailed on? I expect more of the same from AVB this year, hopefully Caulker becomes a Europa league CB and Verty a LB in the prem.

Backing Spain and Italy then, too be fair I agree with you. Although I personally can see Italy getting a cleanie, so am thinking a dutchman up front instead of Bianchetti/Biraghi.

Switch Bertolacci to a Dutch/Norwegian just in case. We have 6 transfer for the final so make sure you at least 5 players in the final whatever the results.

Spoke about Kaboul earlier in the 'potential bargain' hot topics earlier. Providing he comes back strong from the injury (never guaranteed with such a lay off) then I reckon he'll be first team. Kaboul started ahead of Dawson GW1 and before that Dawson was nearly sold.

Fair enough Dawson has been in the team nearly the whole season but their defensive record isn't anything to shout about and Kaboul was their #1 centre back the season before last. He wasn't their player of the season in 2011/12 (I was wrong earlier) but he wasn't far off it, tried to find an official source but the best I can seem to find is the official spurs forum where the a large % of people on there mention Kaboul as their POTY pick: http://www.tottenhamhotspurs.tv/forum/players-lounge/28135-player-season-goal-season-game-season.html

Didn't he play as a defensive midfielder in the second half of the season? If it's the case, then no thanks.
He had two very different halves this season, great stats at the start, nothing later on.
I didn't follow Cardiff, so I don't really know what happened there.

    Barta Moreno Biraghi

    Isco Thiago Florenzi Maher

    Morata Immobile De Jong

    Nyland Eikrem Strandberg Hedenstand.

if you cant use manual subs for the second match, no sense in playing wc in semi finals as we have 6 ft. ,the bencch will be less important. Might as well save it for the finals Anyone agree?.

Don't agree that people should've already played it. If they played it this GW, they'll have done pretty poorly with all the rotation, and ended up needing more transfers to get rid of the 2nd choice players that started in the last group games. Nothing wrong with playing it for the semis/final. The advantage is if you can predict the scores correctly, or the winning team, and load up on them players you'll do better than most who don't have a WC and are more likely to have eggs in all the baskets, from the 4 semi finalists.

          Thats not true in anyway;

"needing more transfers to get rid of the 2nd choice players" - We now only need 11 players, so you need 5 first team players from qualified teams to put out a decent team. You have to have really screwed up not to manage that one.

With 6 transfers each round you only need 5 players from the teams you think will lose. That is your four bench and one other. Pretty much all eggs in one basket I'd say.

You would have to keep the semi players you already have which in turn will dictate the semi players you buy. With a wc you have a clean hand

Is it me or is everyone getting tired of voting for comments? At first votes (+ or -) were flying out, but soon they became few and far between. Seems more normal now don't you think?

Normal, as in what it was like before HC

Only voted one up so far, and it was someone who'd managed to fix their grav. None down as of yet. #restraint

^this, wasn't voting one of the most important part of HC? (but also people shouldn't downvote for no reason)

I disagree - there are so many comments now trying to 'start an interesting discussion' and get a green sticky - ugh. I'd rather not encourage it.

Just post the same old crap as we all did previously 1966, voting won't change it much if you don't plan to vote yourself.

That's the plan! It's not the voting itself I don't like, it's the fishing for votes. I do like HomeCrowd, though 🙂

I personally think that the current ammount is appropriate as I like seeing a vote as a badge of honour rather than two a penny throw away meaninglessness.

Mascherano kicking a medic during the Argentina match.

None of this stuff really surprises me anymore; footballer gets slightly splashed with water from somewhere, kicks medic, gets sent off. So far, so football. What I love though is his expression of utter incomprehension when the card is shown. How could this happen? ME? FOR WHAT???

Absolutely textbook, should be taught in academies with reference to this video. I feel he could pull this off effectively had he, say, shot two defenders with a Luger right in front of the referee.
