Pre-Season

Sleeper – Younes Kaboul

It was a season to forget for Younes Kaboul last time round after injuries sidelined the centre-half for all but one of Tottenham’s league fixtures. Having featured in the first XI on 33 occasions under Harry Redknapp in 2011/12, the Frenchman looked to have finally established himself as a White Hart Lane regular but after sustaining a knee injury in Andre Villas-Boas’ first match in charge of the north London outfit, he failed to appear again:

Initially expected to be absent for just four months, Kaboul’s rehabilitation was a somewhat protracted affair and allowed Michael Dawson the chance to forge a partnership with Jan Vertonghen in the heart of the Tottenham back-four. Eventually returning in April, the Frenchman was handed a series of reserve team outings in order to build up his match-fitness but broke down once again, with a thigh strain suffered against Man United in the middle of the month.

With the likes of Steven Caulker and William Gallas also offering centre-half alternatives, Villas-Boas took no more risks with Kaboul’s fitness for the run-in – the Frenchman didn’t feature in the first-team squad again as Spurs’ bid for a Champions League spot was ultimately denied on the final day of the campaign by bitter rivals Arsenal.

The Prospects

A fully-fit Kaboul may well be an intriguing prospect for Fantasy managers next time round. With five centre-halves at his disposal last summer, Villas-Boas was prepared to sell Dawson to QPR until the Frenchman’s knee injury and while the Spurs boss has since acknowledged such a move would have been a mistake, it remains to be seen whether the former Nottingham Forest man can keep his place ahead of Kaboul in Villas-Boas’ plans.

Assessing the options for 2013/14, Villas-Boas has already allowed Gallas to leave after deciding against renewing his contract. While Caulker started 17 league games last term, it’s noticeable that he featured only seven times in the final 19 Gameweeks, as he fell behind Dawson in the pecking order. The latter, on the other hand, started 20 of the club’s final 21 fixtures but bearing in mind that Spurs registered just five clean sheets over that period, Kaboul’s installation alongside Vertonghen would afford a little more mobility in the heart of defence and improve their prospects of keeping out opponents.

Certainly, a drop in price looks on the cards across the Fantasy games next time round for Kaboul. Having started the previous campaign at 5.5 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL), there’d be no surprise to see him slip to 5.0 – Dawson’s 2012/13 starting cost – and, while the likes of Kyle Walker and Vertonghen offer greater security of game time, their premium prices may well deter Fantasy managers as we look to balance our opening budgets.

While Kaboul may not quite rival Vertonghen for goal threat, the Frenchman arguably offers more in the opponents box that Dawson and, if he can establish a run of starts, Fantasy managers will anticipate some return to compliment any clean sheets that come his way. Granted, with eight shut-outs over 2012/13, Spurs were hardly the most reliable investment when it came to defensive returns but as Villas-Boas looks to tweak his first-team options for his second season in charge, Kaboul could prove a real value option should he manage to steer clear of the Tottenham treatment room.

On Sky now. That ends that.

Cesc Fabregas insists speculation about a summer move away from Barcelona is 'absurd'.

Fabregas has not been a regular starter for Barcelona following his return to the Catalan club from Arsenal in 2011 and reports claim he could move back to the Premier League.

Arsenal are thought to be keen to lure Fabregas back to the Emirates, while he has also been linked with a big-money move to Manchester United.

But the 26-year-old dismissed talk of his departure by reiterating his desire to stay at the Nou Camp.

"I've always said that I'm happy at Barca. Whoever says that I'm leaving doesn't know me and has never spoken with me," he said.

"Nor with my agent, because he knows that I don't want him to talk with other people about me. I'm very private and I don't even talk about these things with my family.

"If someone says anything that isn't that I want to play at Barca, it's completely absurd."

I think we all kinda knew that deep down unfortunatly, he's hardly gonna just throw the towel in.
Balague wrote about it a month ago, and whatever people think about him, I find him generally on the ball when it comes to Barca and Real and transfers.

He's also adamant that Ronaldo is staying, and unless I hear from Moyes that we've bid for him, i'll believe Balague.

Does anyone have any thoughts on players they would like to see breaking through this year, one's that would likely start at a cheap price? Like Davies last year.

My hopes are for Rekik of Man City - really hot prospect at LB, technically superb.
Westwood of Sunderland - If Mignolet leaves after the prices we would have a great value route into their defense.

I just think it's unrealistic for somebody like Rekik to break through at Man City, given the options they have. I reckon even Lescott is probably ahead of him at LB.

That said, I haven't many suggestions as to who might break through... perhaps a stronger season for Kacaniklic? Oxlade Chamberlain to finally establish himself as first choice?

If Everton loose Fellaini, would like to see Ross Barkley week in week out. Could be a top FPL player if he gets minutes.

Danny Rose at Spurs too, if he can keep out BAE. Loves to go forward, bit of a hot head, would be FPL gold.

If Bale costs 11m & RVP costs 13m, would you get both for GW1, assuming they both available?

Don't forget the players prices were fairly reasonable last season, that may not be the case again next season.

Depends, may got for Hazard instead of Bale, due to Chelsea's DGW. If RvP is 13m then yes, I'll get him.

I'll probably try. And Cavani. And Hazard. Oh dear.

But didn't someone yesterday talk about an analysis that showed that £12m+ players only being worth it if you captain them therefore don't get two?

Where marquee signings should be limited to 2 to give viable captain rotation, otherwise it isn't worth it due to cheaper options being able to provide enough points to do well.

Sure; but if you buy RVP & Bale, you probably couldnt afford to buy a 3rd marque player anyway.

In fact, IF RVP & Bale = 24m, that leaves 76m for 13 players.

So that is less than 6m per player.

Well then that would further the point that you couldnt afford a 3rd big name signing, which renders the linked post above fairly pointless.

I appreciate that both are pretty much fixture proof. But for me all my opening squad will still depend on fixtures and budget.
24% of your budget on two players, has to mean serious compromise elsewhere in your team.

agree that fixtures will play a part, but unless both have 3 or 4 of the big teams in the first 5/6 fixtures I would expect to have both in my team.

        Chelsea dgw could hamper this

but if you add in a 4.5m keeper and a couple of 4.0/4.5 defenders thats roughly 37% on 5 players, plenty of budget left

I had my suspicions. Noone comes close to the Romans when it comes to conquering and governing. I find the Greek philosophy and politics more interesting though. And their appreciation of art and architecture was way ahead of it's time.

Having had to sit through an architecture modules about the aincient times I can categorically say that the Romans had no taste whatsoever. The Pantheon is just a direct copy of the parthenon! This complete rip off of Greek stuff is seen throughout the Roman empire, and whilst I acknowledge that the engineering feets the Romans achieved were magnificient, they had no style.

Quick HC observation. The time/date group has gone on the newest posts. It's now 3 mins ago, 5 mins ago etc.

Any chance the UK time/date group can be reinstalled? Very useful for non-UK members when it comes to deadlines & KO's etc......thanking you.
