Scout Report – Derek Boateng

Fulham have been one of the busiest clubs this summer, with three new members of the first-team squad already acquired. Having bolstered his backline with the arrival Fernando Amorebieta and Maarten Stekelenburg, Martin Jol has also increased his options in central midfield by snapping up Derek Boateng from Ukrainian outfit Dnipro Dnipropetrovsk.

The tough-tackling 30-year-old makes his way to Craven Cottage on a one-year contract with the option of a further year and will brings plenty of top-level experience to the Fulham midfield. A long-term target of Jol’s, Boateng spoke of his delight at clinching the deal late last month:

“I’m very happy that I have signed and I want to thank the Chairman, the Manager and the Board at Fulham Football Club. I’ve been working hard to come here and I’ll do my best for the Club. It’s been a long road for me but now I’m here I’m so happy and I can’t wait to start and give everything I have.”

The History

The Ghana international has plenty of experience across a number of leagues in Europe. Starting his career as a 16-year-old with Greek side Kalamata FC, Boateng scored nine times in 27 appearances and was subsequently picked up Panathinaikos in 2001. There, he notched three times in 24 league games but was farmed out on loan to OFI Crete the following year, scoring once in 12 matches.

Boateng was then transferred to Swedish side AIK in 2003, scoring five goals over three seasons, before continuing on his travels yet again – this time moving to Beitar Jerusalem in Israel. There, he lasted another couple of years, helping his side win the league for the first time in 10 seasons and scoring eight times in 72 appearances, before moving to Germany with FC Cologne.

Having failed to nail down a starting berth, the nomadic Boateng then switched to Spain to star for Getafe for two seasons – he grabbed two goals and a pair of assists over 72 league games, though his penchant for incurring the referee’s wrath is reflected in 20 yellow cards over his time in La Liga. Picked up by Dnipro 2011, he scored twice in 23 league games before Jol came calling last month. Boateng has also featured 46 times for his national side and found the net once.

The Prospects

Given the number of midfield departures already this summer, Boateng looks likely to be a first-team regular for Fulham next time round. Jol has so far released Chris Baird, Giorgos Karagounis, Simon Davies and Mahamadou Diarra, while loan signing Emmanuel Frimpong and Urby Emanuelson have returned to their parent clubs. Given that Steve Sidwell hardly covered himself in glory with back to back suspensions which forced him out of seven of the last eight league matches in 2012/13, a central midfield overhaul looks on the cards.

In all likelihood, Boateng’s more defensive-midfield role and previous scoring record won’t be winning many suitors in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) game, despite the fact he’s expected to come in around the 5.0 mark. As Jol looks for a more creative presence alongside the Ghanaian, Sidwell’s starting berth looks under threat and while Bryan Ruiz was occasionally moved to a more withdrawn role last term, Jol is likely to return to the market again and allow the Costa Rican to continue behind Dimitar Berbatov in a 4-4-1-1.

Depending on price, Boateng could, however, prove a decent value shout in the Sky Sports game. The bonus aspect, which rewards passing and tackling, could bolster his appeal, with the Ghanaian tasked with sitting in front of the back-four as Jol looks for a little more resilience in the centre of the park. Plenty of starts looks assured, then, but from an FPL perspective, he’d need to surpass his previous exploits to force himself onto our Fantasy radars.

Re Pellegrini and his effect on Man City’s defensive record

I have read quite a bit now about Pellegrini and his expansive football inevitably leading to a reduced defensive performance from Man City’s defenders so I decided to look into it in a little more detail.

    Malaga 2012/2013 13 cs (7 home 6 away) 2nd best , conceded 50 goals 6th

    Malaga 2011/2012 10 cs (7 home 3 away) 10th best, conceded 53 goals 11th

    Malaga 2009/2011 7 cs (5 home 2 away) 17th best, conceded 48 goals 8th
    (season before Pellegrini arrived)*

    Real Madrid 2008/2009 14 cs (7 home 7 away), conceded 52 7th
    (season before Pellegrini arrived)*

    Real Madrid 2009/2010 15 cs (9 home 6 away) 3rd best, conceded 35 2nd

    Real Madrid 2010/2011 (post pelegrini) 16 cs (10 home 6 away) 2nd best, conceded 33 2nd

    Real Madrid 2011/2012 (post pelegrini) 14 cs (5 home 9 away) 3rd best, conceded 32 2nd

    Real Madrid 2012/2013 (post pelegrini) 11 cs (6 home 5 away) 7th best, conceded 42 3rd

    Villareal 2005/2006 9 cs (6 home 3 away), conceded 39 goals 5th
(first season in liga after he got them promoted)*

    Villareal 2006/2007 13 cs (7 home 6 away), conceded 44 goals 8th

    Villareal 2007/2008 18 cs (11 home 7 away), conceded 40 goals 2nd

    Villareal 2008/2000 5 cs (5 home 3 away) 2nd best , conceded 54 goals 8th

    Villareal 2009/2010 10 cs (8 home 2 away) 2nd best , conceded 57 goals 14th
    (first season post pellegrini)*

In short what we see is Pellegrini increased the defensive resolve of the teams he went to and had a comparable defensive record to his predecessor at Real Madrid (the angry one JM) and surpassed JM’s cs record in all but one of JM’s three seasons in charge.

Basically I don’t think we will see much of a fall off in Cities defensive returns going forward but some of the rest of you might be able to read a little more into the info above.

Alastair based on the cs stats I don't think it is tbh. I always thought this myself but the top teams in liga struggle to get the same amount of cs as the EPL teams (who are hardly the best defensively).

Maybe the lack of cs is down to the big teams winning comfortably and not minding conceding the odd goal in five or six goal win?

Nice research Dino. Kompany is interesting me for next season.

I'm I right in thinking he plays a 4-2-2-2 style of system. That would help Silva in the hole more but I don't see how Navas fits in.

Looks like a 4-2-3-1 with narrow wingers to me judging by a quick search of recent ZM articles: http://www.google.com/cse?cx=partner-pub-0788950471766041%3A34qm0y-un2l&ie=ISO-8859-1&q=pellegrini&sa=Search&siteurl=www.zonalmarking.net%2F&ref=&ss=913j123947j9#gsc.tab=0&gsc.q=pellegrini&gsc.page=1

Joaquin was a roaming playmaker in the hole, I wonder if Silva will take up that role - I'd keep an eye on him.

Did you read the part where it said that the DM had been the standout performer all season along with the goalkeeper?

Now we can expect Joe Hart to resume his old form and do just as well as Willy. But I suspect that Ferdinando has been bought to play the DM role, and I think it would be very eager to expect him to perform from the off. So I would stay clear in GW1 then buy in City defenders as the season goes on.

Saw that Camacho bit but didn't click that Fernandinho is probably the man for that job now, nice spot.

The timing of when to invest in defenders is one I still haven't really settled on. PL fantasy picked out an interesting trend that CS is highest at the start of the season, falls and recovers towards the end. But top 6 teams seemed to improve throughout the season. That's consistent with your plan.

Yeah exactly, ubers with get random cleanies at the start, followed by a bumper christmas where no one keeps cleansheets and then post january the big teams tighten up in their bid for the title.

Yh that seems to be his favored formation Tommy but he has been very flexible in making the best use of the players at his disposal such as at Real where he played 4-2-3-1 and last year he often played 4-1-4-1 with Malaga with two wingers (Isco being one) so I think he will find a formation to get the most out of his assets really.

I don't really watch liga so all this is coming from research off t'internet

Interesting that the lowest number games that the top 4 defender played is 28. This suggests to me that rotation in the defence once he is settle on it may be kept to a minimum. This will be good news that we can have city defenders without much of a rotation risk

what will be the future of ivanovic under mourinho?do you guys think he will revert him back to rb?if so then ivanovic surely will be in my team.if ivanovic gets the right back position back he will be a great FPL asset.

    when at rb ivanovic has:
    1) great assist and goal threat with his crosses and runs, down the right flank.
    2) though being a rb he still goes up for corners and being a good header of the ball he is a goal threat.
3)stats says that chelsea keep more clean sheets when he is at rb rather than cb.
[we know that he was better at rb 12-13 season. So, here is a stat from 08-09 season to 11-12 season:

    Overall record at CB:
    Games: 66
    Mins played: 5456
    Goals conceded: 63
    Clean sheets: 23

    Overall record at RB:
    Games: 87
    Mins played: 6730
    Goals conceded: 61
    Clean sheets: 33]

and also considering the dgw he again can be a start-of-the-season hero!!!

Slight reformat of your stats, they only just keep more CS's with him at RB but concede considerably less goals. I dont think you can only consider his defencive duties alone though. How does his attacking threat compare with Azpi's? I suspect Azpi creates more chances.

Bit early to actually know but I'm looking at Norwich/Southampton for 9.5 mil tops. They were a perfect rotation last year and there's no reason why the Premier League would change that. Ruddy plus (insert new signing). Cesar?

          This.

Look at the potential of both Norwich and Southampton to be tighter this year. Ruddy was a beast and organised his back four as good as anyone in PL and Pochettino was tightening the Saints up and has previous with his defensive returns at Espanyol

“I love to attack and I love to go up front...It is a little more difficult than when you are playing centre-back. If you play the way that I want to play, I think my influence is better as a left-back. For the team, it is best that I play as a centre-back. I like to bring the ball out. You need to move the game quickly, and that is one of my qualities as well.”

I've been looking at this Vertonghen quote at the bottom of the posts for several months. So what does he think his best position is?

I don't like the idea of CBs moving to DM at all. The thing that makes them look like good DMs is their comfort on the ball and distribution - at DM these skills are required, but under totally different pressures, DBS with a whole lot of other stuff going on (tracking tricksters etc.). I don't contest they can do a job, but I'd much rather a specialist.

The idea of moving DMs to CB however is much more successful.

Not really. A few days ago Rio also tweeted there are going to be a few surprises on his testimonial. The wum in me is excited. Odds have slashed. 19/4 two days ago. Evens today.

With all this Chelsea, United, City and Arsenal drama and new signings, Liverpool are going to hold a lot of differentials next season. Gerrard, Sturridge, Coutinho & Enrique etc are likely to out of price range when you have RVP, Bale, Hazard, Higuain, Cavani etc, maybe it is worth ditching the 30-year old United striker to afford some of these hidden gems....

Barring any major changes, RVP and Bale are the first 2 names on my team sheet next season. For me, its not a budget of 100m for 15 players, its a budget of about £75m for 13.

I'm not getting RVP this season.
Players I have marked are Hazard, Mirallas, Coutinho, Helenius, Coleman, DDG and whatever striker Spurs sign.. minus Damiao

I don't buy this talk about Fulham being a decent defensive prospect next season. Jol has always been an attacking manager and Fulham's defence has unsurprisingly weakened since he took charge. Are the new signings really much of an improvement on what they had before? Admittedly I don't really know anything about Boateng or that CB they signed but from what I've read I don't get why there would suddenly be a transformation in their resilience.

Too many changes usually = terrible results... just look at any Steve Bruce/Mark Hughes team after they've been given money. 😐

Stekelenburg is class. This new CB is meant to be tough as nails as well and I don't know much about Boateng but his surname must mean he is a good player 😉

I know he's old but Schwarzer was still performing, While its a good signing for them, Stekelenburg coming in isn't exactly solving a problem position.

As for those Boateng's, they can be very frustrating to watch 😉

I don't think a mid table team managed by Jol is ever going to be all that defensively.

It's assumption more than anything.. the signings are decent and the options will be cheap so it's worth a shot I guess

I don't see Boateng being much of an improvement on Enoh. Amorbieta will be considerably better than Senderos though so that should help. Stekelenberg is of a similar quality to Schwarzer in terms of GK I'd say, it's his distribution that will improve the team.

I wonder what this place will be like come RMT season.

Will people upvote one person's draft and comment hardcore on it? Will people want to post their RMTs if it gets them highlighted/fear of people stealing their team?

Will all the huge stat table posts be the top stickies and be difficult reads?

You know, I love stats, and I love people doing the work and compiling them, but I feel there are limits on when and how I want them.

Sometimes, in say an RMT where I have a question of Michu or Fellaini. I'm just looking for something simple like Michu because xxx

Hopefully intelligent replies get acknowledged just as much as smart topic starters.

It's an interesting question. We'll only know when we're there I suppose, but also, will people start to use upvotes as liberally as one might for instance on Facebook comments; not necessarily just for agreement sake but to show support?

So far I've been fairly tentative myself but if everyone starts doling out +reps then the temptation will be to follow suit.

Pretty comprehensive explanation of how the Prem fixtures are decided (released next Wednesday). http://www.epfl-europeanleagues.com/how_the_fixtures_are_produced.htm

Some requirements I didn't know about:

"Wherever possible clubs should have no more than two successive home (or away) fixtures, excluding cup draws.
All clubs should have an alternating sequence of home and away Saturday fixtures at both the beginning and end of the season.
Any club away on Boxing Day should be at home on New Year's day and vice versa. Local derbies are avoided on these dates but equally distance of journeys should be minimised. If possible, clubs should have an equal number of home and away fixtures on Bank Holidays, if applicable."

Was also trying to find a list of clubs paired so they never play at home on the same week (example: Newcastle/Sunderland) but not found anything yet. Obviously will give us some budget rotation possibilities. Will Cardiff/Swansea be paired? Anyone know if Crystal Palace or Hull will be paired with anyone?

I initially thought Palace/West Ham was the plan but they are actually quite far apart. Palace are in deep SE London and West Ham far east; stadia are 15 miles apart by road (according to Google).

West Ham are a long way out in east London, Fulham and Chelsea are about as close as you can get in west.

Parmtree posted something recently, I think it was:

      Utd/City
      Liv/Eve
      New/Sun
      Che/Ful
      Ars/Spurs
      Swa/Cardiff
      W Ham/Palace
      AVL/WBA

Leaving Hull, Stoke, Norwich and Southampton to be paired.

OK that makes sense (I suppose despite not thinking Crystal Palace and West Ham are that close from having lived in London, they are the two remaining London clubs).

        AVL/WBA, SWA/CAR, NEW/SUN and WHU/CRY already look good.

clearly hull/stoke and Nor/south as rather arbitary pairings as they arent near anyone. Although i suppose Nor/Hull could potentially be deemed "close"

If he's 4.5m Ruddy is a cert for my team so a pairing with Southampton or Stoke (with a cheap Butland) would be ideal.
