Scout Report – Derek Boateng

Fulham have been one of the busiest clubs this summer, with three new members of the first-team squad already acquired. Having bolstered his backline with the arrival Fernando Amorebieta and Maarten Stekelenburg, Martin Jol has also increased his options in central midfield by snapping up Derek Boateng from Ukrainian outfit Dnipro Dnipropetrovsk.

The tough-tackling 30-year-old makes his way to Craven Cottage on a one-year contract with the option of a further year and will brings plenty of top-level experience to the Fulham midfield. A long-term target of Jol’s, Boateng spoke of his delight at clinching the deal late last month:

“I’m very happy that I have signed and I want to thank the Chairman, the Manager and the Board at Fulham Football Club. I’ve been working hard to come here and I’ll do my best for the Club. It’s been a long road for me but now I’m here I’m so happy and I can’t wait to start and give everything I have.”

The History

The Ghana international has plenty of experience across a number of leagues in Europe. Starting his career as a 16-year-old with Greek side Kalamata FC, Boateng scored nine times in 27 appearances and was subsequently picked up Panathinaikos in 2001. There, he notched three times in 24 league games but was farmed out on loan to OFI Crete the following year, scoring once in 12 matches.

Boateng was then transferred to Swedish side AIK in 2003, scoring five goals over three seasons, before continuing on his travels yet again – this time moving to Beitar Jerusalem in Israel. There, he lasted another couple of years, helping his side win the league for the first time in 10 seasons and scoring eight times in 72 appearances, before moving to Germany with FC Cologne.

Having failed to nail down a starting berth, the nomadic Boateng then switched to Spain to star for Getafe for two seasons – he grabbed two goals and a pair of assists over 72 league games, though his penchant for incurring the referee’s wrath is reflected in 20 yellow cards over his time in La Liga. Picked up by Dnipro 2011, he scored twice in 23 league games before Jol came calling last month. Boateng has also featured 46 times for his national side and found the net once.

The Prospects

Given the number of midfield departures already this summer, Boateng looks likely to be a first-team regular for Fulham next time round. Jol has so far released Chris Baird, Giorgos Karagounis, Simon Davies and Mahamadou Diarra, while loan signing Emmanuel Frimpong and Urby Emanuelson have returned to their parent clubs. Given that Steve Sidwell hardly covered himself in glory with back to back suspensions which forced him out of seven of the last eight league matches in 2012/13, a central midfield overhaul looks on the cards.

In all likelihood, Boateng’s more defensive-midfield role and previous scoring record won’t be winning many suitors in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) game, despite the fact he’s expected to come in around the 5.0 mark. As Jol looks for a more creative presence alongside the Ghanaian, Sidwell’s starting berth looks under threat and while Bryan Ruiz was occasionally moved to a more withdrawn role last term, Jol is likely to return to the market again and allow the Costa Rican to continue behind Dimitar Berbatov in a 4-4-1-1.

Depending on price, Boateng could, however, prove a decent value shout in the Sky Sports game. The bonus aspect, which rewards passing and tackling, could bolster his appeal, with the Ghanaian tasked with sitting in front of the back-four as Jol looks for a little more resilience in the centre of the park. Plenty of starts looks assured, then, but from an FPL perspective, he’d need to surpass his previous exploits to force himself onto our Fantasy radars.

    Mark Hughes.

Can he maintain the mighty Stoke fortress at the Britannia next season?

Who knows. He's had good moments with Fulham as a manager. Possibly his biggest problem will be trying to get Stoke to score goals. I think he'll tackle that first.

To do that he'll have to upgrade his strikers/attacking mids. Crouch, Jerome and Walters won't get a huge haul. If he got Lukaku on loan or scouted a couple of good strikers he might do ok.

I think it depends what this fortress was built on, or: why the considerable home defensive advantage? Was it the intimidating atmosphere? The tactics used at home? The tactics used by away teams at the Britannia, so it became a self-fulfilling prophecy?

Which of those might leave with Pulis?

My take on it is that Pulis was doing the most sensible thing with the relatively unskilled players at his disposal: defend. If Hughes was brought in because the fans wanted attacking football, I can see them conceding more.

That's Trapattoni's arguement with the Irish team. Show them how to dog in and defend and be hard to beat cos they're not good enough to play football. But he also tried to keep more creative players like Coleman, McCarthy, McClean, Hoolohan and Long out of the team and kept trotting out the "we weren't beaten" line after another hardfought draw. Some of them Stoke players are better footballers than they've been allowed to show. Adams was decent in his Blackpool days, Etherington, Pennant too can play ball.

Yeah I see that trap (ba dum tish) as it limits how far you can go as a team. I reckon some of Stoke's players could play better football (at least I hope so) but not sure any of them are exactly technically gifted. Adam had a good season as a long pass machine, though he didn't work out at Liverpool, Pennant was an Arsenal dropout whose attitude was so dodgy I'm not sure I've ever seen him at his best.

I think Pulis has chosen his players according to his direct football philosophy and as a result there's not going to be many suited to the more technical game that Hughes presumably wants to bring in.

Not unless it's just going to be good old fashioned wingers and poachers, but Stoke don't have that much pace either!

In fact taking the Irish comparison, I think Ireland have comfortably better players than Stoke... I really like Long, Coleman and McCarthy.

To be fair, their 7-7-5 record this season does not spell "fortress" to me.
I doubt Mark Hughes will take Stoke to higher peaks than Pulis did.

What do you think will be the best mid-table defences next season, in terms of getting clean sheets out of them? I am personally looking at three of them.

    1. Fulham --> Did worse than they were supposed to do last season, and that was mainly because they conceded too many. Quick to snap up solid backline options in the transfer market - Stekelenburg, Amoribieta, and Riether, and their defence looks very decent right now. Confidence in their defence is low, and that's going to give up atleast some Fulham defender around 4.5 (Hangeland?). Worth a shout.

    2. West Ham --> Although Stoke had the more fancied fortress last year, West Ham didn't do too bad, either. They had less quality in their sidebacks (sorry, Demel), and they've sorted that as well by buying Rat. We will probably see a hike in their prices, but if they can give us consistent CSes, it is worth it,

    3. Cardiff --> Every year, there will be that one promoted side which will park a bus all season, especially at home. From the three, Cardiff looks the most probable side to do that. They haven't got any good attackers, so they will probably have to rely on cheeky 1-0s to save relegation. Also, the fancied Vorm-Marshall rotation excites me.

Any teams you want to add to that list?

Newcastle. Season before last they kept 15 cleanies. Last season they massively under performed and if we're lucky, that was purely down to Europa plus injuries. They'll be well cheap.

I have a dream that Debuchy will come in at 4.5 based on being part of last season's defence. Won't happen but I've got a month to dream.

I still don't fancy Newcastle's defense, more because Coloccini is likely to leave this summer. But then, if we get Newcastle cover at 4.5 (I think Debuchy will still be 5), they will be worth a shout.

Yeah, with all the transfers available to everyone it was silly by the organizers. Should have been no WC or less free trades.

We are basically all getting a free WC for the semi's and finals.

Yep, just automatic subs so there's a chance your subs will be completely useless.

Maybe you can use your wildcard to get a bunch of non-playing ridiculously cheap subs so you can get all the expensive players in your starting eleven?

That you can do anyway, by hanging on to your non playing Israel/Eng players and just using your 6 free trades. Once again, no need for WC.

One I'm eyeing very closely - Bartra. Might be a puzzle being 7.0 but scored 2 in qualifying, I think, threat in the box. Also remember him fluffing a golden chance against Bayern.

          Yep.

"Based on their performance, players will be allocated a point score after each game. Anything happening in extra time counts but penalty shoot-outs do not. Points are awarded as detailed in the table below:"

          ...

"Goalkeeper not conceding while on pitch (must play at least 60 minutes) 4
Defender not conceding while on pitch (must play at least 60 minutes) 4"

If they're on the pitch in extra time they will lose the 4 points then.

I was favouring van Rhijn all tournament as I expected the full backs to attack more, but since that hasn't happened as much I would go for Martins Indi in case of a goal at a corner. Either of those tho as both nailed on at 4,5m

this could be the best premier league in ages

6 teams will have realistic chanses of winning it

1)Chelsa-great squad and Mourinho as coach, they should be main contendors for title

2)Man City-also brilliant squad with more atacking coach Pelegrini.Perssonaly i will miss Mancini but looking from fpl perspective Pelegrini could do well

3)Man UTD-nothing to say really, hopefully Moyes will fit there nicely

4)Spurs-with AVB and Bale as one of the best players on planet they should be capable of beating anyone

5)Arsenal-seems like Wenger will finally spend some money and buy quality players like Fellaini and some decent striker like Higuain, they could win prem league with those transfers

6)Liverpool-i know that a lot of people writing them off but Rogers doing good job in my opinion and if Suarez stay they could be suprise of the season and finissh in UCL,and i think that they could go all the way and win PL title cause their squad is great as well

out of this 6 is really hard to pick who will be a winner cause everyone are capabale of beating anyone

    can't wait for season start

who will win it in your opinion?

Why? Suarez will leave and if he stays he will be like a slow poison working his way thru the team and their morale. Stevie G is old and last time I read he was going to get an operation. Aspas...are they even going to sign him? Sturridge, can he stay fit? Reina? Busy playing with beach balls. Who they got left? Downing?

i agree with this , but with Suarez Liverpool is compleatly different team and like you said Couthino is class

i just feel that Liverpool is ready for big things this year

hopefully they wont loose pts against weak sides

Liverpool getting into the top 4 really depends on Suarez staying. Without him or without some world class additions I can't see it. Having Sturridge as their main striker or with new unproven CBs, and heavy reliance on the likes of Coutinho doesn't bode well. The additions will all have to have an immediate impact really.

bit optimistic with six but certainly four in with a shout, i'm hoping for a four horse race down to the wire...which would be great after last seasons damp squib.

If Spurs hold on to Bale, they will have a fighting chance for the top 4. Arsenal are two signings away from title contention. Che, Utd and City will be in the mix.

Liv are the dark horse. I like what Rodgers is doing with them. Consistency though is an issue. They will finish anywhere between 3-7.

Personally, I think it's a bit of a stretch to include Liverpool in a title race - with or without Suarez. Top 4 would be a huge achievement this season and I don't see them getting that if I'm honest.

I also can't really see Tottenham winning it, albeit I think they have more chance than Liverpool. They'd need to go pretty much all season without any big injuries or serious drop in form and it's incredibly rare a team does that.

The other 4, I agree, could all have a chance depending on the transfer activity this summer.

In reality it will probably have boiled down to a 2 or 3 horse race by Christmas as per usual!

Agreed, this season was a bit of a wash out with everything decided so early on - the most interesting seasons for the neutrals are the ones where both title and relegation battles have a lot of teams involved for as long as possible.

I could see them flirting with the top 7/8 but it would be an extraordinary season to see them higher than that, surely? Be interesting to see how they cope with European football this season - it's been the downfall of more than a few teams' league form in the past.

knew that game against schots would be hard and i was right as ussual

i laughted so hard when we loose cause most of croats has been disrespectfull against stchotland and they never heard for any of those players

we has been coocky and we deavrsed that loose

never then less we are still a good and solid side

Aw that was a very collected response 🙁

I agree, all the fighting talk before the game was unprofessional and it spurred our lads on.

We've got a good squad of players we've just been poorly managed before Strachan.

If you get by the group stages of the WC ill be impressed 😉

Like England, Croatia have a couple of world class players but it's not enough. You need about half a dozen to win the WC.

Agree with Stoke but maybe Villa wil be ok as they didn't look too shabby by the end, they may not have had many outstanding performances or results but they at least got it together a bit in terms of open play. Sunderland may be in for a torrid time with Mr Di Canio at the wheel.

Yo, stats jockeys. Some opinion required

What is the best measure for post-hoc assessing fixture difficulty:

    A) Goals conceded. By this measure, last season away at Sunderland was just as hard as away at United.

    B) Shots in box conceded. By this measure, away at QPR was harder than away at Sunderland

Both obviously split home and away. Ideally, I would take defensive form into account but I don't think I have the data in the right form to do that.

There was a site that did calculations based on:

Shots conceded * Conceding rates work. I've seen "projections" of difficulty based on how much teams' opponents convert their chances at home/away and they combine it with the number of shots conceded of a particular team.

      Hope that's not too confusing

If you have Tableau installed locally, you can open up any of his workbooks and look at the underlying data.

Another approach might be to look at the FFS ticker. They use 10 separate colour gradients to denote the difficulty, which you can extract and convert into a number in Excel. Last time I had a look at it this way, they were spookily accurate when compared against the outcome of the match.

Although I am a huge fan of the FFS ticker, I'm afraid I have to say that I find Chris Glover's defensive/attacking projections a lot more useful as an objective view of a team's projected performance.

I'm not saying stats are the only thing to consider, but I like to see raw data as much as possible and add my own interpretation.

I tend to agree, but we don't know how FFS work out the fixture difficulties for the purposes of their ticker. I would hope it's a bit more objective than Mark and Granville sticking their fingers in the air and working off a hunch.

Also, for what it's worth, when I did some analysis on it last season the best statistical correlation was between goals conceded and 'big chances conceded' (0.54 correlation). Attempts in box was next at 0.46.

Not sure if that help or hinders!

Actually, I'm not so much a fan as a guy who wanted them to do well while I was living there, on account of safety 🙂

But I've been given the honour of Owner of Newcastle in the TWS game.

I honestly don't know who will replace Colo but I'm sure whoever it is will be French 🙂

Douglas is now out of contract at FC Twente. Nice piece on him here, although I'm not sure about him being very calm - there have been some crazy moments with him before!

Yeah I was going to mention him been linked with him for awhile, know very little from him. I watched one game of his and he seems comfortable on the ball and fairly calm which is handy

I do. He is a pretty good footballer for a CB, and a significant threat at set-pieces. He is prone to the occasional mental meltdown tho. I was hoping he would be in the Dutch team by now.

Good, good. We'll soon knock that threat at set-pieces out of him though - he'll give up once he realises how low the standard of delivery is!

Also, if you do want to go down Willis' clean sheet route, I have a spreadsheet which has a record covering the last 4 years of clean sheets kept by all 30 sides who've featured in the Premier League in that time including whether it was home/away and who the opposition were. I've also recorded the final league positions of the opposition in order to give a crude measure of fixture difficulty each clean sheet was achieved in.

I'm hoping when the fixtures come out it helps me choose a solid rotation or two but there's a lot of white noise in the figures I think.

It's frankly a mess because it grew over time and I'd design it completely differently now but you're welcome to have it or ask specific questions of it if you like.

Haha! It grew organically over time (which is why it's messy) rather than being one big project. It only started as a quick look at which teams kept more clean sheets home than away. I got a bit carried away after that... 😉

This is a huge can of worms you're opening here Roscola!

I won't claim to have the answer but I will say this: no statistical analysis will be able to tell 100% of the story and you can only try to concentrate on the stats that are the most influential in the actual outcome (if that makes sense).

I think a combination of underlying stats like shots in the box and big chances is the best indicator of team performance, although I leave it to people like Chris Glover (http://premierleaguefantasy.blogspot.de/) when it comes to this kind of thing since he does such a good job. You should look at the posts he's done where he's reviewed his model and looked at the correlation between certain underlying statistic and actual outcomes (e.g. shots conceded in box vs. goal conceded).
