Great Expectations

Great Expectations – Philippe Coutinho

His arrival at Liverpool in last January’s transfer window was afforded little fanfare or heightened levels of expectation. Certainly, there was no denying Philippe Coutinho’s talents but the young Brazilian’s record prior to moving to Merseyside hinted at a player who was far from the finished product:

With Luis Suarez, Steven Gerrard and fellow new-boy Daniel Sturridge all vying for our consideration, Coutinho was afforded time to settle as a regular under Brendan Rodgers but by the time the season ended, had done enough to suggest he could well be a major contender in the 2013/14 campaign.

Introduced towards the end of the Gameweek 26 home defeat by West Brom, Coutinho soon cemented a first-team place and started all 12 of Liverpool’s subsequent league matches. Utilised on the left in Rodgers’ preferred 4-3-3, he also operated on the flank when the Reds shifted to a 4-2-3-1 to allow Suarez to tuck in behind Sturridge, but Coutinho also had a brief central berth in the first-half of the Gameweek 37 win at Fulham when Rodgers trialled a 3-5-1-1 formation, with the Brazilian handed the role in “the hole”.

Key Factors

  • Coutinho has quickly shown he is tailor-made for Rodgers’ style of play. His pace, vision and trickery, allied with an improving eye for goal and impressive work ethic, is likely to see him start the vast majority of games next time out. Already, his starting role looks assured regardless of further summer acquisitions – incoming new boy Iago Aspas looks set to force Stewart Downing down the pecking order on the right, though the Spaniard may also vie with Sturridge for the central role if Suarez decides to leave.

  • Crucially, while the likes of Suarez, Sturridge and Aspas will be classified as forwards, Coutinho should maintain his midfielder classification in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) game – a fact that is likely to prove significant and boost his out of position prospects, with Rodgers expected to roll out a 4-3-3 more often than not.

  • Having started at 6.5 in FPL last time out, there’s no doubt a hike in price is on the cards but – given he has just 12 Premier League starts to his name and isn’t on spot-kicks, set-pieces or corners –Coutinho is likely to remain outside of the premium bracket. Gerrard’s return to form last term is set to threaten the double figure bracket, while a ceiling of 8.5 seems realistic for the youngster. With Gareth Bale, Theo Walcott, Santi Cazorla, Juan Mata and Eden Hazard all expected to come in at 10.0 or over, Coutinho may well prove outstanding value and help free up budget for our three man front lines.

  • From just 12 starts, Coutinho produced three goals, seven assists and six bonus points – an average of 5.75 FPL points per start. Most impressively from a Fantasy perspective, he showed a real consistency, producing attacking returns in seven of his first XI appearances and the Brazilian also demonstrated his explosive capabilities with three sets of double figures to his name.

  • His performances in Suarez’s enforced absence through suspension bode particularly well for any would-be suitors. The Uruguayan is, of course, suspended for the opening six matches of 2013/14 and has made no secret of his intentions of sealing a move away from Merseyside this summer – Coutinho flourished in the four games without Suarez, producing a goal, four assists and four bonus points; an average of eight points per game.

Served me well in the run in last season (and in the PlayOn game) If he stays as a midfielder and is no more than 8.0m I'll be all over it.

I have to say as a Liverpool supporter I'm quite optimistic this season. It appears that Rodgers has an idea about how much players are worth with a real eye for talent (on the most part). Coutinho's a case in point.

Probably be let down like usual though. 🙁

      i'm sure it will.

my worry is BR has no plan B and with these types of players signing (aspas, alberto etc) the likes of Stoke will just bully us off the ball again

If he stays he'll be pricey.

I think it will depend how the FF games across the board view Liverpool's prospects.
I'm hoping for some mid price options in the Liverpool line up, with better than mid price performances.

I fear this may be the case. FPL pricing has a tendency to work a bit like boxing scoring - the judges end up giving the most weight to the last 30 seconds of each round.

        I'm thinking:

        two cheap keepers
Chelsea, mid-priced defender from decent defence with good fixtures plus three cheap defenders to rotate for one spot.

In relation to Fergie & United under Moyes...

Why is everyone so quick to suggest we will struggle to challenge for the title next season? Only ONE thing has changed, Ok a pretty big thing but as Fergie has always said, no one man is ever bigger than the club...including himself. He will still be there in an advisory role behind the scenes helping Moyes and the coaching staff, which everyone has seamed to forget! (he's not dead you know) If Ronaldo needs persuading about returning to Old Trafford I'll bet my house Fergie is at that meeting with Moyes...
Plus I believe Moyes will want to compete in the Champions League. He's only tasted it briefly with Everton and he'll want to demonstrate his tactical knowledge on the biggest european stage with his new team of players that have more quality and skill than most of the Everton squad. He had and average win percentage of 42.08% which is pretty impressive considering the squad and lack of funds at his disposal.

Everton's Premier League finishes under David Moyes:

    2001-02: 15th
    2002-03: 7th
    2003-04: 17th
2004-05: 4th (qualified for Champions League)
    2005-06: 11th
2006-07: 6th (qualified for Uefa Cup)
2007-08: 5th (qualified for Uefa Cup)
2008-09: 5th (qualified for Uefa Cup)
    2009-10: 8th
    2010-11: 7th

    * If he achieve this with Everton then what can he achieve with Manchester United...

It's a very different job. The skills required to succeed at Everton are very different to those required to succeed at United. Even the definition of what counts as success is different.

I also think people are putting too much store in SAF still being around. Moyes will want to demonstrate that he is in in charge; he has already done so by getting rid of SAF's backroom staff. It's a really hard gig he's got - any success will be attributed to SAF still being around and the 'United system', but any failure will be his to bear alone.

You are one of many delusional utd fans silver surfer. Busby hung around after he retired too didn't he? How did that work out again?

      http://www.irishtimes.com/sport/soccer/english-soccer/manchester-united-to-ensure-no-repeat-of-post-busby-decline-1.1386116

imo utd would have a better chance if saf wasn't hanging around undermining the new managers ( don't give mmoyes more than 1.5 seasons)

Earlier we heard from Napoli striker Edinson Cavani's mother about the Uruguay international's future - now his father has been having his say.

"Cavani's intention is to play for Real Madrid," Luis Cavani told Spanish newspaper Futboleros. "He is excited about it and is very willing to see it through. He has told the family in private that he wants to join Real Madrid but if he declares it publicly it will annoy Napoli."

So you're already looking in terms of MF:

    Bale,
    Hazard/Mata
    Walcott
    Coutinho

All good solid options for their respective clubs.

I'm definitley beginning to sway towards starting with a 3-5-2 next season.

That seems to be what a lot of people are talking about and it makes sense when you look at midfeilder vs. striker return (there was a good hot topic about this recently).

However, I wonder whether this season will be the season for strikers again? The midfielders who did well (the ones you listed plus Cazorla) will suffer a price hike, while the misfiring strikers will probably drop (e.g. Aguero) and could end up being better value.

Realistically I can't predict that until the prices are released, transfers take place and Chelsea's doubleweek is confirmed . At this moment in time Bale, Walcott , Van Persie and Mata if Chelsea's double is confirmed look essential.

Far too early really , going be many lineup changes , Mata may not even be at Chelsea.

By the time we actually pick teams half people here going be suffering burnout and information overload.

Agreed. I'm refraining from doing anything related to picking a team. Looking back on the past seasons and trends yes, but there are way too many variables without the new prices and all the transfer activity. FPL burnout does happen.

If heavy-hitters is define as players at the top of their respective price-bracket, I'd say 3 attackers max (Bale and RVP and probably a Chelsea midfielder) and one defender max (Baines or a Chelsea defender)

I think having more will lead to an unbalanced team.

Given the Chelsea DGW I think there needs to be at least one big hitter from there. I'm definitely leaning towards Hazard as it stands and maybe double defence. If they sign Cavani or similar I may well double in attack though.

Probably Bale since he seems to be absolutely unstoppable and it just hurts too much when he scores and I don't have him.

Other than that it's going to depend on fixtures. I'll probably have one other big hitter forward but it could be RVP/ Aguero/ Higuain/ other based on my whims at the time.

It depends what you call a big/heavy hitter. It's all a bit theoretical until we get the prices but I would define it as someone at the top of their price range who had a great season last year and are expected to have a repeat of that.

            Aguero doesn't fulfil either criteria.

I consider heavy hitters basically to be those who are at a premium price. I expect Aguero to be in the top few strikers by that measure regardless of last season's poor showing. I'd be delighted to be wrong of course!

I could imagine £10.5m (or maybe even less) for Aguero vs. RVP's £13m+, which would put them in different price brackets IMO.

Hmm, not sure there'll be another striker in RVP's price bracket really and probably only Bale close in the entire game. Should they be the benchmark for big hitters?

I think it's good to know what kind of rotation strategies work before you start considering players, especially for picking defenders.

I see what you mean though. You can spend ages finding defensive rotation strategies and then end up doing it again when the prices are released due to the availability of cheap defenders from different team.

Itay Shechter, previously on loan at Swansea, has joined Hapoel Tel Aviv.

Always seemed like a strange signing by Laudrup, as Shechter had been totally ineffective for Kaiserslautern in their relegation year.

Sure, the fixtures are provided under license by Football DataCo (FFS has a license from them, as you can see from the footer at the bottom of the page). However it's been argued that there is no intellectual property involved in a fixture list, therefore they can't charge a price to reproduce them.

There was a case last year which went all the way to the European Court of Justice, who determined against Football DataCo.

          See here, for example:

Mark might be particularly interested in this bit:

"We anticipate that those who have been paying licence fees for use of the Fixture Lists may wish to seek repayment of fees paid"

I think the fees were something like £3k to reproduce a complete set of fixtures, so it's not small change!

Talking about GW1 defences, the only heavy-hitting defenders that I fancy are a Chelsea defender (if the DGW happens), and Coleman. Rest all should be 4-4.5, imo.

    What about you?

      Coleman a heavy-hitter? I would say he's mid-priced.

My strategy is: premium/heavy-hitting defender (probably from Chelsea), 1 mid-priced defender with good fixtures plus three £4-4.5m rotating for one spot.

Yeah, I meant Coleman as a mid-price defender. Around the 5 to 5.5 mark.
It will be very difficult to get your Chelsea defender right, though. I might play safe like I did last year, and get Cech.

I went with Cole over Ivan last year (only just!) and was really gutted when Ivan scored and had a huge haul.

You're right, picking the right DGW defender seems like a lottery.

anyone else will try get atacking 7 from top clubs?

before i strat look at budget options i'll try cover all big teams (a lot of depedning on schedule as well)

so i am looking at something like

    Couthino,Kagawa,Bale,Hazard,Silva

    Aguero,Higuain

in the mix:RVP,chelsa striker, walcott (everything depends on prices)

with so manny good mf options 3-5-2 with ultra cheap defence could be my strategy for start of the season

yep,you are right i just calculated and it will be impossible

ramaning 6 players should be 4.5M-5M max

so let's say i spend 30M on 6 players and i have 70M for heavy hitters ( hopefully i will be able to get at least 5-6 of them)

      Coutinho - 8
      Kagawa - 8
      Bale - 12
      Hazard - 10
      Silva - 9

      Aguero - 10
      Higuain - 11

You've only 32 left for 7 players, including a striker. i.e 4.6 per player, and I'm being generous.

If correct, it would mean filling up the rest of your team with £5m players on average. Which is still very possible if you go for the uber-cheap backline which a lot of people seem happy with:

      4.0 4.5
      4.0 4.0 4.0 4.5 5.0
      Bale (12.0) Walcott (10.5) Coutinho (8.5) 6.0 5.0
      RVP (14.0) 7.0 7.0

I doubt we will have a playing 4m keeper.

It won't work for gw 1 anyway. No chelsea DGW players.

Yeah, it's not for me given the likely DGW, but it illustrates how it's possible to get all 4 of those players in your team if you're prepared to rationalise elsewhere.

Everyone season we shit ourselves(still don't know how this gets thru the filter...) when the prices come out.

We always seem to manage to get decent points on the board though. Injuries and rotation obv plays it's bit.
