Great Expectations

Great Expectations – Philippe Coutinho

His arrival at Liverpool in last January’s transfer window was afforded little fanfare or heightened levels of expectation. Certainly, there was no denying Philippe Coutinho’s talents but the young Brazilian’s record prior to moving to Merseyside hinted at a player who was far from the finished product:

With Luis Suarez, Steven Gerrard and fellow new-boy Daniel Sturridge all vying for our consideration, Coutinho was afforded time to settle as a regular under Brendan Rodgers but by the time the season ended, had done enough to suggest he could well be a major contender in the 2013/14 campaign.

Introduced towards the end of the Gameweek 26 home defeat by West Brom, Coutinho soon cemented a first-team place and started all 12 of Liverpool’s subsequent league matches. Utilised on the left in Rodgers’ preferred 4-3-3, he also operated on the flank when the Reds shifted to a 4-2-3-1 to allow Suarez to tuck in behind Sturridge, but Coutinho also had a brief central berth in the first-half of the Gameweek 37 win at Fulham when Rodgers trialled a 3-5-1-1 formation, with the Brazilian handed the role in “the hole”.

Key Factors

  • Coutinho has quickly shown he is tailor-made for Rodgers’ style of play. His pace, vision and trickery, allied with an improving eye for goal and impressive work ethic, is likely to see him start the vast majority of games next time out. Already, his starting role looks assured regardless of further summer acquisitions – incoming new boy Iago Aspas looks set to force Stewart Downing down the pecking order on the right, though the Spaniard may also vie with Sturridge for the central role if Suarez decides to leave.

  • Crucially, while the likes of Suarez, Sturridge and Aspas will be classified as forwards, Coutinho should maintain his midfielder classification in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) game – a fact that is likely to prove significant and boost his out of position prospects, with Rodgers expected to roll out a 4-3-3 more often than not.

  • Having started at 6.5 in FPL last time out, there’s no doubt a hike in price is on the cards but – given he has just 12 Premier League starts to his name and isn’t on spot-kicks, set-pieces or corners –Coutinho is likely to remain outside of the premium bracket. Gerrard’s return to form last term is set to threaten the double figure bracket, while a ceiling of 8.5 seems realistic for the youngster. With Gareth Bale, Theo Walcott, Santi Cazorla, Juan Mata and Eden Hazard all expected to come in at 10.0 or over, Coutinho may well prove outstanding value and help free up budget for our three man front lines.

  • From just 12 starts, Coutinho produced three goals, seven assists and six bonus points – an average of 5.75 FPL points per start. Most impressively from a Fantasy perspective, he showed a real consistency, producing attacking returns in seven of his first XI appearances and the Brazilian also demonstrated his explosive capabilities with three sets of double figures to his name.

  • His performances in Suarez’s enforced absence through suspension bode particularly well for any would-be suitors. The Uruguayan is, of course, suspended for the opening six matches of 2013/14 and has made no secret of his intentions of sealing a move away from Merseyside this summer – Coutinho flourished in the four games without Suarez, producing a goal, four assists and four bonus points; an average of eight points per game.

I use it to scan comments quickly. Typically, I sort by rating then close replies so I can find the discussions that might interest me before expanding the replies to that discussion.

One thing to change on this...when you show/hide in a thread, I want all replies to expand, not just the next level. I'm going to request this with Ed.

Here's a link to a game from the official site FIFA , its not fantasy manager but atleast there's something to play for. Its a pretty simple game & theres prizes too, something like, ''you could win a ball signed by the likes of Lionel Messi, Cristiano Ronaldo and several of Spain's world and European champions''.

How many CSs do you expext Everton to get next season. My guess less than 10. Assuming this is about the extent of Matinez's Everton CSs

He'd have to score at least 4-5 goals to make him worth his price tag and be a better option than Coleman.

If Doosra is right and Danny Simpson does go to West Ham I suspect there will be a fair amount of hatred for him for dislodging the legendary Demel.

Yes, but for 5m you should be able to get a defender from teams I'd trust a little more such as Stoke, Swansea, maybe Everton, etc. I'm not sure I trust West Ham to be worth investing that much in the defence personally.

Yeah, I'd go along with that. Keepers are rarely underpriced relative to the defenders so you can expect to pay at least an extra 0.5 for a team's keeper vs the cheapest defender in the team.

Well, possibly, I guess I was looking more at what you could expect 5.0 to buy you in previous seasons but you're right - there are doubts over the solidity of those teams this coming year.

Actually, that raises an interesting point - is this going to be the season with most new managers at the normally reliable Premier League teams and therefore the most uncertainty in GW1?

Chelsea (albeit Mourinho has been there before)
              Everton
              Man City
              Man Utd

For me he just looked more dangerous as the season went on, nothing to do with stats just how he played and the fact he never flagged...I think he will exceed Mata's 11 goals next term..we'll see..

Well looking at those figures, Hazard got more points per minute and will probably be cheaper.

Mata's goal threat also took a big dip towards the end of the season.

Not a huge difference there. You need to remember that was Hazard's debut season while Mata had the previous season to get used to the PL.

Price will make the difference between the two although that could end up being the same.

Hazard seemed to kick on and really find his feet whereas Mata had already settled last year so the feeling is that Hazard could well improve whereas Mata probably won't (although clearly his level of performance is outstanding)

Also, from actually watching the games and putting the stats to one side, Mata seemed to become much more of a string puller whereas Hazard was looking more likely to get the goals.

Hazard may well be on penalties.

There are strongish rumours that Mourinho isn't a fan of Mata (I find this bizarre but hey)

Mata was converting a ridiculous % of his shots. Seems good but regression analysis suggests he therefore overperformed.

I actually think they're both good options but that's why I'm leaning towards Hazard currently.

I have already quoted some stats for these two. yes both will score well and hazard will improve in his second season but it will all come down to game time between them. mata got more at the start of the season and hazard towards the end. one thing to note is that when mata played he does score more points per minutes on the pitch.

Attacking returns are a bonus, unless we're talking about a really significant goal threat or an OOP player.

I would expect to be able to play them most weeks.

Most defenders I look at are either one or two 6m plus ones, one of two in the 4.5m range and one in the £4m range.

The £5m is an interesting one. You'd look to play them each week, if they didn't you may as well have a £4.5m one.

For that extra money you'd want something special as well...assist potential, like a good rb or lb at a mid table club. Goal threat as well would have to be an asset, like say a Shawcross at Stoke.

The other attribute for a good £5m is that they are a cheap prospect at a major club, a player that through injury to others gets a good run...a kind of Buttner at Man Utd if Evra gets injured.

He finished being a good pick a long time ago. Defenders lose the knack of getting on the end of things at set pieces if they go long periods without doing so. He doesn't look threatening at all.

Attacking return is always a bonus. When I buy Vertonghen, and he gets me a CS, it is decent enough. But goals are always a bonus.

A £5m defendr from a top 6 team that is getting games, just CS potential will do, If I'm spending £5m on a defender from a mid-table team there's got to be an attacking threat because there's often a 4.5/4.0 alternative.

He gave zaba his start in pro football in SA so I reckon zaba will be his no1 on the team sheet each gw.

The other thing with zaba is he will be relatively familiar with pelegrini tactics and obviously won't have any problems with the language barrier so will likely be the on field manager for pelegrini when tactical changes are required.

      IMO:

Keepers (usually) score more due to saves

You often have 3 defenders rotating for one spot so it makes more sense to spend £4.5m on a couple and £4m on one.

        Holland Under-21 news;

Strootman and De Vrij are both training fully and available for selection following very minor niggles.

The Netherlands underwent a gentle recovery session at the team hotel on Thursday morning before recreational time and interviews on the beach. Pot's men had a closed training session on Thursday evening prior to going to a restaurant for dinner.

Van Rhijn celebrated his 22nd birthday on Thursday with a cake and balloons.

If he figures in the semi-final, Leroy Fer will equal Arnold Bruggink's record as the Netherlands' most-capped player at U21 level, with 31 appearances.

        Italy Under-21 news;

Coach Mangia is hopeful of having Insigne back from the ankle injury he sustained in the second game against Israel.

The squad's most serious casualty to date, Luca Marrone, has stayed on to support his team-mates in the semi-final after his club, Juventus, responded positively to his request to remain in Israel.

Mangia has reiterated his desire to win in a certain style. "Playing good football is essential," he said. "Based on how we started to think since I took over, we've always said it's important to win, but it's even more important the manner in which you win."

                Past meetings

                • Daniel de Ridder scored the only goal after 74 minutes when the Netherlands beat Italy 1-0 in Aveiro in the group stage of the 2006 final tournament. That Dutch victory secured qualification for the semi-finals at the Azzurrini's expense and Foppe de Haan's side went on to lift the trophy.

                • Italy won the nations' most recent U21 friendly 3-0 in Leeuwarden in what was coach Devis Mangia's debut at the helm on 15 August last year. Lorenzo Insigne scored in the first minute and by half-time Italy had the game wrapped up after further goals by Ciro Immobile and Alessandro Florenzi.

            Hi Amigos
Really quite sad that scout decided to end their forum after all these years, (the site was all about the old forum ) What was Marks main reason apart from money for the downgrade chaps? Really disappointed as i used to view detailed discussions on here and learn and share both ways and now just find that people are making short stupid coments.
I would like you to bring back the forum where i can have a detailed conversation with people on here like on Fiso and previously please....?
If not can we have a vote from the members on here to decide if we want a Forum or a Live chat which will get completely out of hand when more users join please?

The new system is proving really popular and promoting far more detailed discussions, which crucially are easier to find, via the hot topics and sticky search functions to the right and above.

You can have really detailed conversations here and now found them more easily.

Hi Andy, I'm surprised with your comment to be honest as I find the recent change to the new system in the last week has hugely improved.

We've gained functionality with this new system and as far as a downgrade goes - I really hope you don't see it as such - it's cost money not saved it 😉
