Great Expectations

Great Expectations – Matthew Lowton

Snapped up from Sheffield United last summer, Matthew Lowton fitted the bill as part of Paul Lambert’s restructuring program at Aston Villa. Young, ambitious but with plenty yet to prove at the top level, the right-back arrived from Bramall Lane for a fee of around £3m and was immediately installed as a key component in Lambert’s first XI.

As the season unfolded, the defensive problems that plagued Lambert at Norwich continued to blight Villa’s backline. An attack-minded philosophy looked naïve at times as the midlands outfit found themselves on the wrong end of some serious goings-over – shipping five to City, four at home to Spurs and eight against Chelsea, Villa leaked 69 goals over the course of the campaign and managed five clean sheets all season, conceding in every match from Gameweek 17 onwards.

Key Factors

  • Few defenders, if any, afford the same consistency of starts as the Villa right-back. Lowton missed just one match all season – the Gameweek 37 loss at Chelsea – after being subbed off early in the previous league fixture and was fourth overall defender in terms of minutes played. Lambert’s faith in the former Blades man is unquestioned – if he’s fit, he should start every match for Villa.

  • After altering formation on a number of occasions last term, Lambert finally seems to have struck upon a 4-3-3 as his preferred option. As the Villa boss tinkered with his tactics in order to get the best out of his charges, he trialled three, four and five-man backlines with varying degrees of success – as he steels himself for a second season in charge, a greater degree of consistency looks key to Villa’s improvement under the Scot.

  • Villa’s form across the final few months of 2012/13 affords reason for optimism. The midlands side registered five wins and a couple of draws in their last 10 games, tasting defeat only to United, Chelsea and Liverpool and scoring 21 goals over that period – given that they had won five of their opening 28 matches, scoring 26 times, their improvement is marked.

  • Lowton also stepped as the season went on – he managed a single goal in the first 24 Gameweeks but followed that up with a goal and four assists in his final 13 appearances, with his penchant for a spectacular strike from distance always a threat. A 4-3-3 formation looks tailor-made for his talents – with a couple of defensive midfielder sitting deep, he should be afforded plenty licence to bomb forward and supply width from deep.

  • Let’s face it – Villa’s defence can barely get any worse. From a Fantasy perspective, then, a price rise for Lowton looks unlikely across the games – if he continues at last term’s initial 4.5 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL), he has the potential to be a real bargain, providing Lambert can instill a little extra resilience at the back next time round.

Just read the article and I've had Lowton pencilled in for a long time to be invloved in rotation.

At home he had 344 touches in the final third and 663 touches in the opposition half. For defenders both those stats were 6th on the list behind Baines, GJ, Walker, Rangel and Sagna. He will be excellent value at 4.5 mil

I'm not - at Norwich he was naff as well - he's an attacking manager with the mentality of "we are going to give it a good go" regardless of opposition, which will lead, once again to loads of goals being conceded.

4 at home was only 1 less than Spurs and Arsenal. As Paul pointed out, they toyed with a few formations. This doesn't help defensive coherence so now Lambert is settled on a 4-4-3, you would hope a few more could be possible

Rotations allow you to rotate cheap players to give you string of favourable fixtures. This can be a 2 or even 3 way rotation for defenders. Balance is to allow your squad to react quickly to bandwagons etc without having the need to waste transfer moving money about or having to spend points to do it. For example a simple one is having three 10 mil front men and nothing in midfield. Following gameweek, Bale goes nuts, becomes a must, you will need two transfer to get bale in.

Pick the cheapest defence you can and avoid expensive defenders. Save your money for the highest scoring players which tend to be mids and fwds. Both the first two players in FPL this year have identified this strategy as a key component to their success.

I prefer my cheap defenders.to come from teams with a manager that is easy to read

W ham under Alydice are a prime example for the year ahead , you know exactly what your getting

There a lot of luck in fantasy football , the secret is to try an illiminate it. Taking a defender from many clubs is nothing more than a punt, take the safe options over the punts an you will fin the game much easier to play .

Put another way there's a lot of uncertainty in fantasy football, the secret is to try to eliminate it.

It was probably a mistake to get Clyne as I just couldn't count on Southampton. Even under Pochettino they didn't keep enough clean sheets for my liking. I did count on Stoke, Liverpool and Swansea (at least until after the Carling Cup final) quite nicely though. Definitely did better this season defensively than last.

6 5 4 4 4 I thought Clyne ok for the money , most time on benvh an he keep fit ,an not card magnate , plus he quite attacking.

North Sea Oil money has gone to the oil companies that extracted it and the UK government in the form of various taxes.

What's corrupt about that? It appears to be an open and notorious decision to maximize the quality and thus the profitability of the Premier League. If you choose to do that, you need foreign investment and foreign players. People aren't paying all those licensing fees for home grown English players.

I know it is late but do you think, in your opinion, the PL should adopt the English (or in that case British) player rule where you're only allowed three foreigners in your squad? They have it in Spain but over there many South Americans can claim ancestry and the citizenship laws are different. Would it be a good thing for something like this? Personally it would cost the PL a large amount of money in revenue and wouldn't necessarily change the sport for the better. (I have posted this in light of what Christina has commented on)

As an American watcher, if the PL adopted the British player rule, I doubt it could keep claim to being one of the top national leagues. Pretty soon, I might switch my TV subscription to La Liga or more likely the Bundesliga to keep watching the best quality games.

I live near Watford and this secret meeting happened in an exclusive hotel right on my front door.

If you listen to all of my link you may find the discussion that gets seriously heated and gets one of our mainstay (Tory) political commentators get lost for words and revert to round finger cuckoo fingers above his head to realize he's out of his smug comfort zone. Free thinking I love it!

    What?

I had an earlier comment removed because apparently my use of vibrators and sex panties made moderators nervous. We are in the off season and free human thinking and discussion between posters no matter how irrelevant to this site of FF should not be removed so whimsically.

That, as I have posted before is censorship of the worst kind and dangerous.

And to add. Yes we do need political views on here because politics is what makes us human

Our whole ideals come from ancient democracies in Greece discussing such matters. If you decree politics a no go area in FFS chat then you are becoming a stagnated autocracy.

We don't need political views on here is a fooking outrageous statement.

Hi Pinkfish - of course you're entitled to your political views but we have never allowed or encouraged political discussion on this site. That has been the case since year dot. I have always tried to calm or remove discussions based around politics because they are off topic but also because they have the potential to escalate into more personal discussions.

While this is the off season and such discussions can be vibrant and interesting, I'm not happy about allowing or encouraging political discussion on this site - I really don't think its the place for it.

That I fully accept and wish him the best, but what you have just done to me I'm afraid pisses me off as my posts are my own responsibility and don't contravene any of the guidance notes you are probably working under.

If they do then yes I'm posting in the wrong Forum. But don't use your new found power so flippantly as I'm not too used to having my freedom of speech sanctioned too freely.

        The scoring system is similar.
Bonus points are way different & much better than FPL. Players are awarded defensive BPs for clearences, recoveries, etc while Attacking BPs are awarded for crosses, key passes, etc.
        Mostly, A defender outscores a midfielder/forward.

It is quite different from FPL. It has attacking bonuses based on crosses and key passes, and defending bonuses based on recoveries and tackles. After you play a few weeks, you realise that playing 4 or 5 good defenders is the key in this game, because there are some defenders who are serious bonus magnets.

Also, reverse OOP options are very much popular here.

Last week, 9 teams had byes. This week, 5. It is by far a crazier game than FMLS.
But I would never want these bonus rules to be implemented in FPL - though they can give those 3/2/1 bonuses based on these stats, if they want.

Happy Father's Day to all you cool daddio's out there!

Have fun unwrapping all the presents that the kids made at school without sounding too disappointed or patronising.

p.s. if you can't tell what the big multi-coloured blob is in your kids' painting, "it's YOU daddy!"

I wouldn't say excited. Although it's a soothing signal that the season is not too far away and it allows a little bit more planning.

And to you, Sportingt. Mine started at 4.58am and I've left Mum in bed while Billy and I do breakfast. Something wrong there, but I'm still having a good morning with the little one.

My kids made me breakfast in bed this morning.

I went downstairs and it looked like my kitchen had a fight with another kitchen and lost.

I've been up for an hour. My wife told me not to make breakfast because the girls are going to do it. Fully xpecting them to stroll drown at noon - meanwhile starving. 🙂

TW, if you're around/ see this post...

Will Neagle keep his place in the side with R.Johnson back? (Don't see why he shouldn't.. he's on fire!)

Might need him back for GW19 (July 3rd) Home to DC United, and he looks great value for a bench fodder who gets points.

with R Johnson or with E Johnson? :D.

with how well Neagle has been playing I think there will be outrage among Sounders fans if he's dropped. plus I think it'd be hard for Sigi to drop him anyways. most likely scenario is EJ + Martins up top, Neagle on the wing.

other possibilities are Neagle takes one of EJ or Martins places (unlikely imo but possible) or Neagle plays up top with EJ on the wing like he did for USMNT (again unlikely but possible). or Neagle on the bench with Martinez + Rosales out wide but I can't see why Neagle would be dropped for Martinez given how well he's been playing.
