Great Expectations

Great Expectations – Andreas Weimann

After the first nine Gameweeks of the previous campaign, Andreas Weimann cut a peripheral figure for Aston Villa. Having started just five times under Alex McLeish in 2011/12, the young Austrian looked to have assumed the role of bench-warmer once again – with two starts and no goals to his name as November arrived, Paul Lambert’s continual first-team tinkering proved severely detrimental to his game time.

As the season unfolded, however, Weimann’s prospects improved in leaps and bounds. While Christian Benteke hogged the headlines with a series of barnstorming displays in his debut season at Villa Park, Weimann’s contribution up top was also crucial over the final few months. Ending the 2012/13 campaign with seven goals, four assists and 13 Fantasy Premier League (FPL) bonus points, Weimann registered 105 points over 26 starts to suggest he may be ready to offer us a genuine, budget-friendly alternative for our three man forward lines next time out.

Key Factors

  • Similar to our previous Great Expectations article on Villa right-back Matt Lowton, an increased tactical consistency should help Weimann’s prospects. Lambert’s tinkering meant the Austrian was utilised in a variety of positions last time round – although fielded on the left, through the middle and in “the hole”, he finally looks to have nailed down a front right role in a 4-3-3, with Gabby Agbonlahor on the opposite flank and Benteke through the middle.

  • As the battle for relegation heated up, Weimann became a key member of Villa’s first XI. He started just 12 of Villa’s first 24 league fixtures, with a further four appearances off the bench, but from Gameweek 25 onwards he started every one of his side’s matches – given that Villa ended the campaign with five wins and two draws from their last 10 games, their improving form indicates Lambert’s side was finally starting to gel as the season came to a close.

  • Weimann’s eye for goal highlights his capabilities against some of the more established sides. The youngster bagged a brace against United and also notched against the likes of Liverpool and Arsenal, racking up three sets of double figures last time round. Indeed, his crucial presence in the first XI is highlighted by Villa’s attacking output – they scored 39 goals in the 26 games he started (1.5 goals per game) compared to eight strikes in the 12 games (0.66 goals per game) without Weimann in the starting line-up.

  • While Benteke’s 19 goals, four assists and total of 166 FPL points made a mockery of his initial 6.5 starting price last term, the Belgian is primed for a significant price hike which could well knock him off many radars. A cost of 8.5 to 9.5 for Benteke looks realistic and with Agbonlahor also finishing the season strongly, his value is likely to be frozen across the Fantasy games, with a possible increase to 7.5 in the FPL on the cards. Weimann should remain the budget option for Lambert’s forwards, then – a cost around 5.5 to 6.0 in FPL could well prove a bargain as he looks to push on from last term’s first-team breakthrough.

Paul Is certain he won't make the same mistakes next season. Follow them on Twitter

Suarez to get the Golden boot imo

already has a goal vs Spain, fancy him to score one or two vs Nigeria and then score 3 or 4 or 5 vs Tahiti, then possibly score one in the semis

don't think they'll put up quite that many. and Spain doesn't have selfish players like Suarez. I can see their goals being shared around the team. plus I reckon that some of the second stringers like mata villa silva caz martinez could get a run out against Tahiti

yeah but not enough to hit 30 goals total. Spain will score 10-15 vs Tahiti then maybe 3-5 vs Nigeria.

and still even with those numbers I expect goals to be shared around the side pretty evenly

    Observations I've made on Mkhitarian:

Positives: He's either footed and seems to be able to strike the ball exceptionally well first time, he appears to like hitting the ball low and hard in the penalty area which makes many of his finishes look very lucky as the keepers usually get touches, he is technically very good, he has superb stamina and his positioning, movement and anticipation are also great, he can operate as a central midfielder, centre attacking midfielder, a winger or a striker so he's very versatile, he also has an incredible change of pace.

Negatives: His aerial ability seems rather questionable which will certainly be called upon if he plays as a striker but Liverpool do prefer to keep the ball on the floor which suits him, he's unproven as a goalscorer at the BPL's high standard as his goalscoring record for the CL is shocking compared to his league form (25 in 28 appearances).

Make of it what you will, lastly I'm guessing if he transfers he will be priced at around the 9M mark?

Very good question Evs, one I'm not qualified to answer but I don't think MK will hinder Coutinho's playing time, that competition will come from Alberto, I think that Coutinho will still be depended on to be the main creative force in midfield as MK doesn't seem to possess the same vision and artistry as Coutinho, I'd imagine Coutinho will play out wide on the left with MK in the middle and Aspas on the right with Sturridge up top, I hope Coutinho will be able to thrive in the assists department with the three goalscorers newly brought to the club (Aspas, MK, Sturridge) but only time will tell 😀

I presume he'll be part of the three in the centre but as the most attacking one, almost an attacking midfielder who drops deep and contributes to the build up play a little more, late arrival's in the box etcetera, Coutinho on the left, Aspas on the right, Sturridge up top and Lucas and Gerrard behind him. I think MK's arrival will be bad for Gerrard.

I was told last week that he was our main target regardless if Suarez leaves or not.

It's hard to say, Suarez could go on the left, Coutinho in the centre and MK on the right meaning Aspas is dropped, it's very flexible like it will be on the pitch, lot's of on the pitch rotation! 😀

Players that will be overpriced this year in terms of mid-priced FPL bargains:

Basically these are players that were golden last year, but we will have to think twice about even touching them this season.

Strikers: Benteke, Lukaku, Lambert, Berbatov, Sturridge

Mids: Michu, Fellaini, Snodgrass, Nolan, Sessegnon

Feel free to add to this list.

I'd say they were underpriced, in hindsight, last year.

This year, they will be fairly priced.

Benteke would still be tasty at 8.5, Lukaku could be depending on his gametime. Michu and Fellaini could both continue last season's form IMO.

Sessegnon I don't expect to rise - he had a poor season I thought. Nolan will be no more than 6.

I think Sturridge will still be worth it if he's nailed on as the striker for pool

if lukaku is nailed on at Chelsea he could be worth it too. likewise Benteke could be worth it if Spurs get him.

i'm not so sure Berba will get that big of a price increase. I remember long stretches of blanks for him this season

and I don't think sess belongs on that list. he didn't produce much iirc

Chelsea's forwards will be a noghtmare if none move on. Torres. Ba. Lukaku.

Can see Spain fielding a second string team.

But I can also see them going for a 32-0 victory, beating Australia's 31-0 record win against American Samoa.

I got over 11.5 goals matched at 75.0 on Betfair before tonight's match. The odds on that market in the Spain fixture.... 2.26.

And just 2.34 for 14.5+ goals! Madness.

You'd have more chance of the U21's notching 30...The Spanish won't be going out to run themselves ragged chasing targets like that even though they could do it....It'll be between 5-10 nil....no more...or if they do get a couple more it won't be through any kind of workrate.

They don't really have a second string do they...just players that play less...I doubt Xavi and/or Iniesta will start...i just can't see a single reason why they wouldn't be rested. After that it may be combinations of players that the manager wants to see together..whether they are first string or otherwise...A friendly match in effect.

Mignolet is a solid keeper, and is much better than Reina. Not really seen much of Heno.

How did your GCSEs go mate?

I'd prefer Tevez over Higuain if I were an Arsenal fan.

Agree on Mig and Heno has been bigged up a lot so I'm excited about that one.

Still have 2 exams to go but they've been going pretty well, yourself?

I've still got 5 to come(3 x Science, 2 x Further Maths), already done 10. All have gone fairly well, revision has been boring but worthwhile.

Yeah, I've seen, I'm aiming for that "super A*'' aswell, not that any of this matters as employers will look at A-Levels over these GCSEs and FSMQs when we get older anyway, it's the understanding which is the most important thing and most of this F.Maths stuff is simple.

Higuain would make Arsenal a very prominent side next season.
Mignolet would be a great addition to Liverpool.
As a Liverpool fan I would rather see a more experienced player purchased, one that is less of a risk to purchase. I'm not convinced by Mkhitaryan.

I'm a Liverpool fan myself and I agree that we need experience in this side. That being said, Mkhitaryan has played in the CL; unlike the majority of our starting 11.

      Liverpool fan here.
We always spend a lot of money, but most often than not on absolute average, overrated English players. That looks to be changing, thankfully.

Liverpool seem to have terrible fixtures to start. Arsenal are always in the first 4 or 5 games. Arsenal and city last year in the first 3
