Welcome to the first of our weekly community round-up articles which will pick out some of the best activity and hot topics generated by the Fantasy Football Scout community over the previous seven days. We will also cover the community leagues and tournaments that are taking place throughout the season. Those running community tournaments are urged to email me ahead of the new season at jonty@fantasyfootballscout.co.uk for inclusion in forthcoming community round-up articles.

Hottest Topics

The launch of HomeCrowd last week introduced the concept of ‘hot topics’ and ‘stickies’, a new way for the community to locate some of most interesting posts and discussions taking place. The current list of hot topics can be found in the widget in the right sidebar, whilst stickies in any article can be found by simply using the “sticky comments first” setting in the “sort comments by” dropdown below each article.

In our first week, we’ve already seen a good number of hot topics from the community, covering a wide range of fantasy football issues.

Statistics have been the focus for many, with the community keen to turn to their abacuses and spreadsheets months before the new numbers come our way. Amongst the pick of our hot topics is 3rd Turd’s Fantasy Premier League (FPL) Stats Home and Away Analysis which is broken down to bonus points, goals, assists, points per game, FPL points and minutes. An incredible achievement and deserving of a hottest topic gong.

Some age-old discussions about Fantasy games have also been given an airing. Mathmo has popped down to his lab to attempt to decipher just how much the game is down to luck or skill. His analysis based on the performance of so called ghosts teams was particularly impressive.

The form versus fixtures debate is one Al Pacino and his calculator has been getting to grips with. Read his analysis based on some of the FPL game’s biggest players here.

Elsewhere this week RoysCallerAnne also started whetting our appetite for the forthcoming fixture list announcement with a look at rotation and whether it’s actually overrated.

The community has also been able to go the extra mile with their in depth analysis of new managers and players coming to the Premier League for 2013/14. Dino’s look at Manuel Pellegrini’s track record was an eye-poppingly detailed analysis of City’s new boss.

Over the week we’ve also been putting out our own daily hot topics, asking for your views on a range of topics including cult players as well as hearing about your greatest fantasy football achievements. We’ve really enjoyed reading your responses.

Community Leagues

Community group FFS UEFA haven’t been resting on their laurels during the close season and have spent the time devising an intriguing transfer window simulation game, which involves 128 community members who are organised along Premier League team names. After the first round Cardiff have the honour of acquiring the highest valued goalkeeper Iker Casillas. For those looking to join the game the sign up details can be found here.

HomeCrowd Updates

A number of our overseas community members requested we tweak the time updates on the site. We listened and we acted. From today, community members can now go into their profile section and under “comment settings” they can find a choice of timezone to select. You can also now choose to see the time of a comment’s posting rather than how long ago it was posted – another popular recent request.

Feel free to keep the feedback, suggestions and community news coming my way via email at jonty@fantasyfootballscout.co.uk.

I want a quick poll to check that my "pre-season optimism'' isn't clouding my judgement but I seriously thought this was a no-brainer, I know you're not attacking Liverpool Count 😆

Who would do better next season?

    A) Tottenham without Bale

    B) Liverpool (Presume Suarez leaves and the imminent signings are concluded of course)

There's this assumption Suarez would be replaced (of course) but not one that Bale would be ...

Oh, and by the way, Spurs have the fourth-highest goalscorer from two years ago, outside Rooney, Aguero, and RVP. A certain Captain America.

Would you care to expand a little bit HVT? I'm seriously missing something, they can't keep a clean sheet because of their constantly changing back four and defenders with far too high attacking mentality and they only seem to be able to win games through Bale, without Bale I just don't see how they'll even get decent service to the new forward.

Dempsey, Dembele, Holtby, Siggy, Lennon. There's a lot of creativity there as well as goal-scoring midfielders.

Between the five of them they only scored 4 more goals than Sturridge scored in the second half of the season for Liverpool, hardly goalscoring, Dempsey is the only real goalscorer out of them.

Because all the goals went through Bale and that's the way the team is set up. Surely you understand that if Bale was to leave, the way the team plays would change slightly and the goals will be spread out across the side more. Those goals don't just disappear. Also Siggy is definitely a goal-scoring midfielder if he's given a regular role.

I think many of the goals would just disappear, I feel they need some real gel in midfield to replace Modric, Moutinho would've been perfect, Lennon needs to just get out of the first team, he's so 1 dimensional, he seems to under perform every season when those two positions are rectified maybe they'd get more chances and be a much better team because of it.

I agree. The form Bale was in dictated the way the team played, it had to. Holtby, Siggy and Dempsey provided a support role and were rotated in and out the side but that doesn't mean they don't have the quality to step up and become more influential in the side. It's just happened to be a season where Bale has rocketed into the form of his life and the rest of the team are in his shadow.

that's because the side was focused on bale not on any of the others. notice how many goals siggy and dempsey scored at swansea and fulham respectively when they were the key figures in attack. with bale gone the attack will focus more on them and they will have greater returns

Good point , I do feel Liverpool will struggle for goals without Suarez I don't fancy Studge both city and Chelsea let him go ok you could argue he didn't get many chances there.
I think avb has built the team around bale and rightly so but I think there are plenty of others to step up there. Defensively both are frail but I genuinely expect spurs to improve on that this year whereas pool will do well to maintain the same amount of cs,
Both teams need a striker and this will decide the ultimate difference between the two, it is tight and I also think avb is a better manager and will improve again this year.

I'm still undecided on AVB, I did a lot of research on him when he was linked to the Liverpool job and I didn't like the way he tries to sit back on 1-0 leads and never varies his tactics, I think they're very stubborn and rigid, but hey, there's a reason I'm only a pundit 😉

I don't think any of them 3 have been quality this season, especially Holtby who has been awful, Dembele's done just about bare-minimum I feel and I maintain my stance that Lloris is massively overrated, I had that stance before he even came to the premier league.

It's a results business and they have been getting the results that have taken them to 4th or 5th for the past 4 seasons. You can't really argue with that. If a team is better than them go and finish above them.

Off topic - sorry. Football - news today -

    1. The new Newcastle Football director can't even pronounce the name of some of his best players

    2. Liverpool take a £20m loss on Andy Carroll (is that a lot of money or not?)

It's not the real world guys.

p.s. I suppose we knew that already!

      1. Specious argument. Kinnear may be a plonk, but using his (mis)pronunciation of foreign names as the basis for that is idiotic. Would Mourinho or AVB or other foreign coaches who mispronounced British names be labeled fools?

maybe, as chelsea keep bringing in a load of midfielders who can potentially play in mata's position. Moreover there has been contract disputes, as Mourinho doesnt want him to have a pay rise.

think stoke will struggle Pulis changed there play only a tiny bit more attacking yet almost went down, they don't have the players to play a different way than being full on defensive. it will take more than a season to change by that time they could be in the next division

Cannot replace Suarez, simple as. There isn't a player like him in the market of who we can attract.

We said the some about Coutinho but it seems like he's one of the most experienced one. I like the blend of youth, but we have to balance that out with experience.

What Rodgers is trying to do is reminding me of what Houiller done, but Rodgers just needs the time to do so.

Once we finish in the top 4, we can attract better footballers and in hindsight progress to the next step.

Arsenal just don't have the financial backing, well not up till now anyway

that will come buy getting 4th and then attracting players of the highest calibre with CL

good signing potential very good hes a better version of reira just he can play in behind the striker aswell though he's played a striker he won't at the top level. nice reserve to have coming off our bench for aspas.

he would have been in sevilla 1st team and close to even starting for them, loan deal with barca is what prevented that and the price being now higher. Barca just don't want to spend that much on a guy that wont get close to their team similar situation to their star winger

I think he'll be a great signing in the long term. We need to sign players in their peak also.

            This.

Nothing wrong with signing young Spanish players, though! Even the 'average' ones in Spain are better than the topdogs in the England setup

Barca didn't buy him because they don't have the money to. They're buying Neymar, it's not like they have an endless reserve of cash.

It's also why Thiago's buyout clause was reduced and they will let Alexis go if a significant bid comes in.

A british company took the rights away from sky nz

but they dont want to show the games themselves, they want to onsell them to broadcasters
        could get messy

When will the new fantasy football season get underway? Last year I remember we could pick teams as of July sometime? Im getting excited already. Some brilliant names coming into the premier league this season. Fantasy football will be the best yet.
