The publication of the 2013/14 Premier League fixture list brought us that little bit closer to the new season earlier this morning. While we’re still a month or so away from the release of player price lists across the Fantasy games, we can, nevertheless, begin to slowly asses the landscape for the campaign ahead – as a result, we roll out our first “Frisking” article, analysing the strength of schedule over the first few Gameweeks:

The Strong

Tottenham

Andre Villas-Boas’ men look certain to be high on Fantasy radars after this morning’s fixtures were revealed. While Spurs square up to Arsenal and Chelsea in the opening nine, they’ll be hugely encouraged by a schedule that hands them home games against Swansea, Norwich, West Ham and Hull, in addition to trips to Crystal Palace, Cardiff and Villa. Such a kind opening run will have Fantasy managers scrambling to bring Gareth Bale on board, with the Welshman looking a viable captaincy contender for all of those matches, given his end of season form last time out.

Arsenal

Aside from a Gameweek 3 home clash against Tottenham, Arsene Wenger’s side have a relatively kind set of fixtures all the way up to Gameweek 9. The Gunners kick off against Villa at the Emirates and also entertain Stoke and Norwich over that run, while trips to Fulham, Sunderland, Swansea, West Brom and Crystal Palace all look appetising for Fantasy managers. Wenger will be hoping his side continue the form that saw them win eight and draw two of their final 10 matches in 2012/13 – with both defence and attack looking favourable, then, heavy investment looks likely in assets such as Theo Walcott and Per Mertesacker, though the price lists across the Fantasy games will determine our initial level of interest.

Man City

The first three Gameweeks have been particularly kind to Manuel Pellegrini’s side. City play host to Newcastle before being handed back-to-back matches against a couple of promoted clubs, with a trip to Cardiff and home match against Hull on their agenda. Visits to Stoke and Villa are on either side of the first Manchester derby of the season as United roll up to the Etihad in Gameweek 5 – Fantasy investment in Pellegrini’s attacking options looks a likely tactic, then, though with City still in the midst of their summer spending spree, picking the right player could be an issue. If Sergio Aguero can rediscover his debut season form, the Argentine may well be the safest route, given the ever-increasing midfield options at the Etihad.

Liverpool

Brendan Rodgers’ side will also be content with the opening schedule. Liverpool open up with a home clash against Stoke and also welcome Southampton and Palace to Anfield in the opening seven fixtures. With trips to Villa, Swansea and Sunderland also in their first seven, the Gameweek 3 visit of United looks the only real stumbling block for the Merseysiders – the chances for points at both ends of the pitch look strong here, with the possible arrival of Iago Aspas and Henrikh Mkhitaryan considerably boosting their attacking potential.

West Ham

Sam Allardyce will have plenty to smile about after this morning’s fixtures were published. The Hammers open up with a home game against Cardiff and also welcome Stoke and Everton to Upton Park in the first six matches. Trips to Newcastle, Southampton and Hull will afford a degree of optimism, though investment will depend on the pricing across the Fantasy games – if Jussi Jaaskelainen moves to 5.5 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL) for example, many may decide to overlook the West Ham stopper and hope one or two defensive options arrive a little cheaper. With Kevin Nolan also expected to climb in cost, Matt Jarvis and Andy Carroll could be ones to watch if they are handed a relatively budget-friendly price.

Also Consider…

Norwich – the Canaries have three kind home games and a trip to promoted Hull in the opening five fixtures. While a trip to Tottenham is perhaps unlikely to result in Fantasy returns, Chris Hughton’s side welcome Everton, Southampton and Villa to Carrow Road – John Ruddy’s price could be key to investing at the back, while Robert Snodgrass and new boy Ricky van Wolfswinkel could prove solid acquisitions in midfield and up front respectively.

Southampton – barring the Gameweek 5 trip to Anfield, the first seven fixtures look kind for the Saints. Mauricio Pochettino’s side have four favourable games in front of their own fans, with Sunderland, West Ham, Crystal Palace and Swansea arriving at St Mary’s, with trips to West Brom and Norwich also on their agenda. Given that they conceded just nine goals in the last 10 Gameweeks of the previous campaign, investment in their backline looks a viable tactic and, while Rickie Lambert is expected to jump in price, the likes of Gaston Ramirez and Jay Rodriguez could be set for extra interest.

Newcastle – the Magpies opening day trip to City is far from straightforward but they then face a run of four games which could prove profitable. Alan Pardew’s men welcome West Ham, Fulham and Hull to St James’ Park and also make their way to Villa Park – reason to perhaps put a smile back on the Newcastle fans’ faces after recent off-field problems. Papiss Cisse and Hatem Ben Arfa could prosper from an attacking perspective, while that quartet of fixtures may boost the appeal of Tim Krul and co at the back; all the more so if the Tyneside team’s backline options are priced down after last term’s disappointing displays.

Chelsea
Jose Mourinho is afforded plenty opportunity to extend his unbeaten home record as boss of the Blues in his second stint at the Bridge. Chelsea’s first four games in front of their own fans sees Hull, Villa, Fulham and Cardiff pay visit, though the Villa game – initially scheduled for Gameweek 3 – has been postponed due to European Super Cup commitments. If, in a similar situation to last season, this is moved to earlier in the Blues’ schedule, it could, conceivably, hand them an opening pair of home fixtures against Hull and Villa in Gameweek 1. Though this is far from certain at the moment, such a scenario would see Fantasy managers load up on Mourinho’s main assets, though with three tricky opening away games (mun, eve, tot), striking a balance will be crucial if the double is confirmed.

The Weak

Swansea

The schedule could barely have been crueller to Michael Laudrup’s side. Beginning the season with the visit of defending champions United in David Moyes’ first match in charge, the Swans then travel to Tottenham in Gameweek 2 and also entertain Liverpool and Arsenal in the first six Gameweeks. Laudrup’s side also face a tricky trip to the Hawthorns, with an away clash against Crystal Palace the only real promising fixture in their opening schedule. Given the quality of their opponents, initial investment in Swansea’s backline may be tempered, while Michu’s chances of getting off to another strong start look to have been somewhat restricted.

Aston Villa

Paul Lambert’s side can also feel hard done by. Villa open with a visit to Arsenal and home clash against Liverpool, while their Gameweek 3 trip to Chelsea has been postponed and could, conceivably, be shifted to an earlier date, giving them a double Gameweek to forget. The midlands outfit also square up to City in the first six fixtures and, given they conceded in every match from Gameweek 17 onwards last term, Fantasy managers will likely steer clear of their defensive options. Clashes against Newcastle and Norwich afford a little more optimism for Christian Benteke and co up top.

Man United

The first handful of fixtures are something of a mixed bag for David Moyes’ side. An opening day trip to Swansea could prove tricky, while United then face a run of fixtures which pits them against Chelsea, Liverpool and City in three of the following four, with a home game against Palace sandwiched in between the last two matches. In spite of the obvious risk, many may be tempted to do without Robin Van Persie to begin with but Moyes’ side then face a run of three home games in four (WBA, sun, SOT, STO) which will surely afford the Dutchman the chance to run riot and rack up the points.

Be Wary Of..

Stoke – Mark Hughes faces a tricky start to his time as boss at the Britannia. The Potters make their way to Anfield on the opening day of the season and also square up to City and Arsenal in the first five Gameweeks, in addition to a trip to West Ham. A home game against Palace offers some consolation but, with Asmir Begovic set for a price hike after last season’s exploits, many will be keeping a wide berth to begin with, though the schedule lightens up somewhat in Gameweek 6.

Fulham – the Cottagers face trips to Sunderland, Newcastle and Chelsea in the first five Gameweeks and also have a tricky home showdown with Arsenal in their opening agenda. While the visit of West Brom offers a little solace, faith in Dimitar Berbatov may be somewhat tempered, though similar to Stoke, the fixtures smile kindly for Martin Jol’s side from Gameweek 6 (CAR, STO, cpl, sot) onwards.

Cardiff – Malky Mackay’s side have been handed the toughest opening schedule of any of the promoted clubs. The Welsh outfit travel to West Ham on the opening day of the season, while all three of their opening home games are against teams that finished in last term’s top six, with City, Everton and Spurs all rolling up to the Cardiff City Stadium. A trip to Fulham also looks tricky, though an away clash against fellow new boys Hull offers hope.

I'm interested to know...did everyone out there have a player from all 20 FPL teams at some point in the season?

I managed to go without a villa player all season.

I've been quite happy to be unbiased over recent seasons with my squad selection. It may be difficult this year.

Given the price of most of the key attacking assets, having one big defender and 4 to rotate around him is looking like the way to go.

Would anyone actually consider a non-home&away-rotating keeper pair?

When looking to the spreadsheet, it doesn't seem like that is taken into account. Is it pure madness? The fixtures might be tasty regardless of the home/away-ness of games.

This train of thought may be backed up with stats from last season showing that there have been more clean sheets away from home than one would think. But... this may cause benching the wrong GK more often

I'm not sure what you're arguing for or against here. Are you saying:

      A) GK rotation should only be Home & Away
      B) GK rotation should be about fixture difficulty, with Home/Away being just one factor of that

Not really arguing for anything, but B certainly seems something to consider, at least. I don't have a good history in FPL, so what would I know, haha. That's why I'm throwing this out there

Sorry, I just couldn't tell from what you'd written. The first question could be taken in two ways.

Personally, I'd say that B is the most sensible course of action. As TW says, you'd surely rather play a keeper away at Hull than home to Chelsea. It's the grey areas in between that are harder to weigh up. Away at Norwich or home to Everton?

No worries, i kinda phrased that oddly anyway.

It may be just a matter of luck anyway, could as well flip a coin as which GK to play in the "grey" fixtures

absolutely. i'd much rather play a keeper away to stoke than home to pool. I personally think home/away rotation is a bit overrated. I think it's better to set up your rotation based on the difficulty of the fixture and how strong of an attacking side the opponent is

Your answer to my boring analysis from the other day showed that fixture difficulty, as defined by Big Chances Conceded, was very much correlated with FPL points.

Your response fairly critiqued my measure of form but I didn't see any quarrel with fixture difficulty. That was attacking stats, of course, not defensive.

              Ah I'd forgotten about that.

Now would you say that the rotation spreadsheets being use "fixture difficulty" which bears any relation to your analysis? And from my research last January I worked out that attacking points were a lot easier to predict than defensive. (Well attacking points per team anyway)

I would say that when I rated fixture difficulty by Big Chances Conceded, there were no real surprises. The order of difficulty was pretty much what I would expect everyone here to guess at.

But defensive point correlation is definitely on my to do list.

So, would you think that, once we are deeper into the summer, your opinion may change when prices are out and players' form are known? I kinda agree that this is just listing theoretical possibilities. But even though they may end up in the waste bin, I find it to be interesting anyway

the european supercup takes place on the same weekend as gw 3, therefore chelsea's gw 3 fixture (AVL) will be moved. last year the same thing happened and their gw 3 fixture was moved to midweek of gw 1 which is the most likely scenario to happen again

Give it about a week and it will be announced that due to Chelsea's silly World Club Cup commitments there's been a fixture alteration which means that both the Hull and Villa games are in GW1.

Very true. Last season I spent a bit of time looking at the best 3 cheap defenders to rotate and I ended up starting the season with Fabio, Clyne, Cuellar and none of them rotated well at all.

I'm a fan of the GK rotation as that is alot more straightforward and a safer position but the defensive one can get a big muddled.

Agree. Gonna look at two cheap GK's (Ruddy/Boruc) but the defensive rotation only works if the form plays a part.

I remember how frustrating the first half of the season was when my cheap defenders were giving me nothing, or the benched ones (Nelson!!!!) gets the points.

Azpi is a far better RB than Iva, surely Jose will recognise that. Also remains to be seen what will be done with Wallace, looks like he'll probably go back out on loan, but the club sees him as the long term right back, Azpi was more a stopgap till he gets some experience.

    My GW1 Team:

    Ruddy/Hull City GK
    Azpilicueta/Rat/Shaw/Lowton/Crystal Palace DF
    Bale/Hazard/Nolan/Mirallas/Mkhitaryan (liverpool)
    Aguero/Cavani (chelsea)/Vydra (sunderland)

    4.5/4.5
    6.5/4.5/4.5/4.5/4.0
    10.5/9.5/6.5/7.0/7.0
    10.5/10.5/5.5
    Total price = 100

    GW2 = Azpilicueta x Zabaleta
    GW3 = Cavani x Higuain (arsenal)

Is it good enough without Man United cover?

Prices are optimistic, but hey you're a glass half full kind of guy, I like that!

Maybe build a plan to get in RVP when they're fixtures ease.

-Mkhitaryan and Mirallas will be classified as strikers.
-Bale will be 11 or above, Hazard at least 10.

last season, only rvp, rooney and aguero that has price more than 10.0. Torres and silva has price 10.0. so, what do you think 5 players that has price more than or same 10.0? I think it will be rvp, rooney/suarez (if stay at EPL), aguero, cavani and bale...... even, mata and cazorla will have higher price than hazard, in my opinion.....
mkhitaryan's natural position is AMC (Michu's case)
mirallas is positioned as midfield last season which could change his FPL position

GW1-19 strategy for me is still all about building team value, so that by the Jan WC I can put together a really strong side for the rest of the season. I still want good points, but will jump on players set for a 0.3 rise that week and sell on when form drops. This is when following fixtures tends to go out the window for me.

While this usually means I risk points over price upto Jan, I usually have a strong Jan-May and that added value generally racks up the points.

Anyone else use this strategy, or is it a fools game?

Nah, just try to pick the players who you think will get the most points. There will always be bargain, even late season. Just look at the top 20's team value 🙂

I know, but it's the Yorkshire in me, I love to squirrel away money and flash it about in the new year! 😉

I finished just over 9k last season. At times in Gw1-19 I was 200k, so maybe this year I try to be less about value and more about picking key players for their fixtures.

My issue is letting go of players I will lose value on. I find this very difficult and usually lose points because of it.

Used it to some extent last season, happily bringing in bandwagoners (Michu GW2 was crucial) and taking hits if necessary.

Can still be considered that bandwagons are partly driven by fixtures so they're not completely irrelevant.

Yes but not all the way up to January. Would try and catch as many as possible for the first 5 GWs maybe then settle down a bit.

I did it in last season and it works. But, I think i will get higher position if I did it more effective.......

The earlier on the more price rise counts.
January wild card is certainly a threshold point.
      For a punty approach:
90 % of hits should be made before January the rest should be injury/DGW related.
This approach assumes your "dream team" will cost 110-112 million and most of it can be put together in january.

I'm sure it must be part of the reason why so many elite players WC early on...The transfers are mad for the first few weeks and somebody could easily boost their TV dramatically with the right moves...Anybody got any data on how many transfers early widcarders do on an active WC ?

I did to an extent.. several which I bought and then sold after a 0.2m rise but others who weren't rising but who I wanted in my team, who had already risen e.g. 0.1m, I kept hold of. It's about striking a balance ..

Yeah...i acn see a lot of arguments for and against an early WC....either that or a good DGW (not gw36...disaster last year as the season was over)...Gonna give it a lot of thought this time..

In all seriousness, will anyone NOT get RVP starting GW1?

The fixtures aren't THAT hard, and we all know United very rarely fail to score..

Risky business. You have to weigh up the worst case where RVP is concerned. Will he really score more than 1 goal in each of those fixtures? Maybe...

The main argument against getting RVP is that you could improve your squad more without him than with him. With him turning 30 and the number of good attacking options, I'd say the argument is stronger than ever.

I think you have to concentrate on fixtures this year and double up, then diversify out of your core when the real bargains/form players emerge, RVP does not fit into this approach.

Yeah...not much of an argument last year as their seemed few options.. and even Bale took a while to get into his stride...plus most ot the other premium options bombed anyway (Silva/Aguero/Rooney). I can see far more arguments for leaving him out this time around..
