Moving Target

Moving Target – Andy Carroll

West Ham stepped up their summer recruitment drive yesterday with the acquisition of Andy Carroll from Liverpool for an undisclosed club record fee. The 24-year-old returns to Upton Park after a relatively successful loan spell last term and arrives on a six-year deal, with the Hammers having the option of extending his contract by a further two years:

Carroll is Sam Allardyce’s third signing of the close-season, following left-back Razvan Rat and keeper Adrian to the club. With Liverpool rumoured to be ready to splash the cash on the likes of Henrikh Mkhitaryan and Iago Aspas, he was deemed surplus to requirement up front and, with the 2014 World Cup looming, has decided to reunite with Allardyce in order to boost his international chances ahead of next year’s competition in Brazil. Speaking to the Hammers’ official website, Carroll went on to say:

“It’s fantastic for me to be here. I really enjoyed last season, and that shows in me coming back and making it permanent. The fans, the lads and the club itself has been great to me, and what I wanted to do was come back here and play football. Since the end of the season I’ve had a lot of time to think, I’ve missed it and that’s why I’m back. Getting promoted the season before last, then finishing where we did – we did great, and it can only get better for us. The way the club’s being run, obviously getting the new stadium and everything like that, it’s only going up.”

The History

Carroll’s career began as a 17-year-old back in 2006/07 with a handful of sub appearances for Newcastle. Struggling to establish himself as a first-team player, he was farmed out to Preston North End the following season, where he notched once in 11 matches. Returning to his parent club for the following campaign, he again failed to nail down a regular role and managed just three goals from 14 appearances as Newcastle slipped into the Championship.

The drop to a lower division afforded Carroll the chance of regular game time, though, and he finally thrived as the Tyneside team quickly achieved promotion, racking up 17 goals and 12 assists over 39 matches. Returning to the top-flight as the club’s main forward, Carroll was a Fantasy football phenomenon in the first half of the 2010/11 season, producing 11 goals and seven assists in just 19 appearances before he was snapped up by Liverpool on the final day of the January transfer window.

His time on Merseyside has been a bitter disappointment, though – from a total of 44 league matches, Carroll found the net on just six occasions, with three assists also accrued. With his style of play clearly at odds with Brendan Rodgers’ tactics, the big Geordie reunited with Allardyce at Upton Park last term and, after a slow start and knee problems, eventually settled, producing seven goals and four assists over 24 league appearances.

The Prospects

If Carroll picks up from where he left off towards the end of the previous season, the omens look good for the Hammers. Although he notched just a single goal and assist over his first 10 appearances, his displays improved significantly after he returned to action from the afore-mentioned knee issue.

In his final 13 appearances for the Hammers, Carroll had a hand in 10 of West Ham’s side’s 18 goals – finding the net six times in addition to supplying four assists. At home, in particular, he was hugely effective, producing attacking returns in six of his final seven matches at Upton Park – a clear sign of his increasing consistency in his new surrounds, with an average of 6.5 points per home game over that period.

In terms of tactics, Allardyce will no doubt retain his lone forward formation, with Kevin Nolan providing support as the most advanced central midfielder and Matt Jarvis supplying plenty of crosses from the left for Carroll to feed off. Given that Nolan is set for a price hike across the Fantasy games after last term’s scoring exploits, Carroll may well be an option if his initial cost is relatively budget friendly.

Having started the previous campaign at 8.5 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL) as a Liverpool forward, a drop to around 7.5 or 8.0 looks on the cards – a realistic price for a first-choice forward at a mid-table side. With previous mid-price favourites such as Christian Benteke, Rickie Lambert and possibly Romelu Lukaku expected to escalate in price, our Fantasy targets will be reassessed and could once again focus on Carroll.

Yesterday’s release of the 2013/13 fixture list also looks promising. With home games against Cardiff, Stoke and Everton allied with trips to Newcastle, Southampton and Hull, the Hammers have been afforded one of the kindest opening schedules of any club. Providing the initial pricing is reasonable, then, the big Geordie certainly done enough over the final few months of his loan spell to indicate he may well be set for a resurgence as Allardyce looks to build upon last term’s solid tenth placed finish.

    Rodriguez is the only name that jumps out at me. What price will he be?

          Also think Carroll will be too much for a 3rd option. Think i'll go for Cavani and Higuain as my first 2, if they sign.

    I'm looking forward to seeing Higuain in the Premier League. Whilst we wait for Paul's Moving Target article, I thought I would take a quick glance at his league stats for the last few seasons:

    http://i.imgur.com/NwN1voN.png?1

    Despite his sometimes limited playing time, he's always been pretty clinical. In terms of:

    - Percentage of his shots on target - he's been between 49% and 63% (highest last season in the PL was Hernandez at 52%)
    - Goals as a percentage of total shots - this is where he really impresses. On average over the last 4 seasons, 28% of his shots have resulted in a goal. The most clinical finisher in the Premier League last season was Javier Hernandez with 23%.
    - Shots per game - varied between 2-3 per game over the last 4 seasons; not outstanding but still more than decent given the number of substitute appearances he made, and it's not really a weakness given how clinical he is with his chances (highest in the PL last season was Suarez with 5.7 shots per appearance, RVP was at 3.7)

    I initially looked at just his 2012/13 stats and thought there was no way he could maintain that level of clinicality (is that a word?), as he was on a par with Cisse's ridiculous 2011/12 season. But having looked back over 4 years, it seems last season was not just a one-off.

    Of course it's always risky extrapolating performance from one situation to another and Arsenal are certainly no Real Madrid in terms of creating chances. Nonetheless I think he'll be one of the first players I look up when the prices are revealed.

            I also think that Theo could still do well next season, even with Higuain. For me it's Aguero or no one from City. Bar Tevez no one else will be nailed on enough and score enough goals and i think the price difference between the 2 will be much less this season. So Aguero being the main man, and having pens makes him a better pick than Tevez IMO

      As soon as I heard the Higuain rumour he was already in my team. Arsenal have always had an attacking mentality and for a striker of the that quality to be the spearhead of such a team is mouth-watering. I'm kind of hoping FPL get carried away with his pricing so fewer people will have him 👿

          Walcott in for Hazard GW2 i think.

          It all depends on midfield prices as i still wonder if van Wolfsinkel could prove to be excellent value if priced no higher than 6.0, especially with Norwich's opening.

          I know Norwich didn't score a lot of goals last season, that is exactly why RvW was bought

        I think that strikeforce is virtually unattainable on the 100m starting budget. maybe after a few weeks when tv has been built up a little, most likely not until Jan wc.

                  But price paid is not the same as a player's intrinsic value. You have to take into account the fact that Real are looking to offload him, and that there are very few other buyers around who he would be happy to play for.

    SAFC next season.

    with bramble, kilgallon, rose and mangane leaving as well as the likely sales of dong-won, bardsley elmohammady, vaughan and mignolet our squad is very thread bare.

    weve signed quite a few players(although no house hold names) already. PDC has got what should hopefully be a great scouting team so hopefully a few of them turn out to be gems. at the moment our team would line up as -

    Westwood(bqck up required)
    new rb and lb required
    2 c.halfs from JOS, cuellar, roberge and Diakite
    johnson on the right and a.n.other on the l.h.side, possibly karlsson who weve just signed from gothenburg but not sure he will be ready yet
    centre mid is a bit of a minefield as we have cattermole, colback,gardner, larsson, n'diaye and roberge(new signing from basle).

    sess
    fletcher

    other options we have are mcClean.
    ba, watmore(2 young players who i dont expect to be involved too much),
    wickham and graham up front, not sure PDC fancies either of these but he has said he wants 5 forwards competing for a place/s anyway.

    as you can see we are desperately short of full backs. if we go 442 he might shift Larsson on the right and AJ on the left but he likes wingers to play on their weaker side so they can cut in so we'll see.

    expecting quite a few players still to come in. busy times ahead at SOL.

    Afternoon all,

    As I play through various potential teams and try and pull together a team I think will come in on budget my biggest problem if coming up with ideas for the cheap midfielders I'll inevitably need to finance the rest of my squad. I know these are positions that will be largely determined by price, but who at this stage does anyone have eyed up to be their Shaun Maloney or Mark Noble of this season?

    Looking at the fixtures, a nice cheap player out of Norwich or Newcastle would be perfect. I'll keep an eye on Marveaux pre-season in the hopes he's worth a shot at making the first team and I remember reading good things about Jacob Butterfield prior to his injury problems - if he showed some good pre-season form I'd be tempted to take a punt at what will surely be a meagre price. (I'm sure someone will have far greater knowledge of him than me, even if it is just to say he simply hasn't got a chance of making the first XI).

    Kacaniklic might still be cheap enough to plug a gap with or at slightly higher prices Jarvis or Ramsey have fixtures in their favour.

    Anyway, I'd love to know who everyone has their eye on. Someone say something to ensure I don't resort to lumping Dirk Kuyt into my team . . .

      I think this year he won't be as prolific.
      If Rooney stays, he'll definitely get a chance along with RVP up front.
      And he's been on an injury free run for a while now, but I hope to jinx that.
      If injury free, he's essential, but I doubt he'll be injury free this season.

    Part 2 of the No Poop Poirot series of analyses confirming what most of us already know. This time, correlation between fixture difficulty and clean sheets.

    Looking at all 760 games last season, I defined fixture difficulty by Shots in Box by opposition. i.e. Arsenal take a lot of shots in the box at home, so away to Arsenal is a difficult fixture to gain a clean sheet in. QPR don't take many shots in the box away from home and are therefore an easy fixture to get a clean sheet. I divided the fixture difficulties into 4 brackets, 4 being the hardest.

    Goals Conceded
    1 :: 0.87 goals conceded per game
    2 :: 1.00 goals conceded per game
    3 :: 1.43 goals conceded per game
    4 :: 1.6 goals conceded per game

    Clean sheets
    1 :: 0.33 clean sheets per game
    2 :: 0.26 clean sheets per game
    3 :: 0.17 clean sheets per game
    4 :: 0.11 clean sheets per game

    As with the previous analysis, this is not news to most of us. But there are people like me who rest a little easier knowing that my pre-conceived ideas stand up to scrutiny. And there are people like Ginkapo who doubt that fixture difficulty is correlated with clean sheets.

      Instead of dividing fixture difficulty divided into categories can you plot a graph of goals conceded vs fixture difficulty please?

      My objection to fixture difficulty is not the concept of some fixtures being harder than others, its the ludicrous methods people are using to define fixture difficulty.

      Just to highlight for others;

      "defined fixture difficulty by Shots in Box by opposition" and not by the colour of their jersey or other random method.

        So you mean, goals conceded on the Y-axis, Season-Total-SiB by opposition on X-axis. There will therefore be 20 unique points on the X-axis because each team has a slightly different total.

        I'll have a go.

            Yeah, I really struggle with Excel's charts. Thanks Tommy.

            OK, I've uploaded it to here: https://docs.google.com/file/d/0B4Qqaj3dS4F_VTR4ME1YLWFXUUU/edit?usp=sharing

            What you want is the sheet called "All" which is all the teams' results in a big long list. The column headings should be clear enough but give me a shout if not.

                  Can't do it mate. Think if we had the side that kept the clean sheet involved in the table, we could plot each sides potential to keep a clean sheet compared to the oppo's SiB. See who are the flat track bullies or who can't be predicted

                    Thanks for working at it for me, Tommy.

                    I could probably add that data, given a little time. But I had wanted something more aggregated across the season to give lots of data points so that anomalies like West Ham shutting out City get drowned out. Going team by team only gives 38 data points each, making anomalies more prominent.

          If I've understood that right, I think I've already done something along those lines:

            I think that's different, 3rd. That's goals conceded against defensive frailty, showing the correlation between the number of SiB a team concedes and the number of goals they concede.

            My numbers are attempting to show a correlation between the number of SiB a team takes (over a season) and the probability of their opponents getting a clean sheet out of them.

            Both lines should be going through zero 😀

            To be fair I am more interested in game to game variation rather than season trends. For instance if Stoke were to take on City at home there should be a draw cause of identical SiB scores.

    it seems that i will be planning front 3 of cavani (around 9.5) aguero (11) and higuain (9.5)=29.5

    5 defenders of 4.5 each =22.5
    2 keepers =9.5

    and 38.5 for 5 midfielders

    sounds fair?

      I think so, as long as he's played "in the hole" and I don't see Rodgers paying that much money to play him out of position.
