Scout Report – Iago Aspas

Having acquired Luis Alberto from Sevilla late last week, Liverpool returned to La Liga to finally complete the signing of Iago Aspas from Celta Vigo on a long-term deal. The 25-year-old passed a medical at the club on Sunday afternoon and, subject to international clearance, will arrive at Anfield for a fee believed to be in the region of £7.7m.

The club’s third signing of the summer, after the Reds also picked up Kolo Toure earlier this month, Aspas is reported to have rejected the likes of Valencia and Swansea, in addition to interest from Spain and Italy, in order to push through the transfer. In an interview with the club’s official website, he went on to say:

“It wasn’t a tough decision at all. I’m really happy to have come to a big club like this one. Having weighed up all my options for this window, a massive club like Liverpool was always my first choice. I’ve not had the chance to talk with the manager at any length just yet but I think that good players can slot into any role and not just one set position.”

The History

A product of the Celta Vigo youth academy, Aspas’ career kicked off in 2006-07 for the club’s reserves. He spent three seasons there, scoring 11 goals in 84 appearances before making his first-team breakthrough towards the end of the 2008-09 campaign, where he notched twice in three appearances for the-then second division-based side.

Installed as the club’s main forward, Aspas proceeded to score nine times in 64 league games over the next couple of seasons before finally finding his feet in 2011/12. Racking up 23 strikes in 35 matches, he ended the campaign as top scorer in the Spanish second division, with his displays helping clinch his side’s promotion. Last term was Aspas’ first in La Liga, which he passed with flying colours – with 12 goals and seven assists in 34 appearances his contribution was key to Celta’s survival, playing a part in 19 of their 37 goals over the course of the campaign. Intriguingly, Aspas’ 57% shot accuracy last term would have been second highest in the Premier League, according to the Liverpool site, with Luis Suarez further down the list on 50%.

The Prospects

Although he was mainly fielded as the lone striker in Celta’s 4-2-3-1 system, Aspas will offer Liverpool plenty versatility should Rodgers persist with his preferred 4-3-3 formation. Predominantly left-footed, the Spaniard can be fielded on either flank as well as through the middle and, in addition to possessing a keen eye for goal, is technically adept and will afford the Reds plenty creativity up top.

Crucially for Rodgers, Aspas is also a dynamic type of player who will slot in seamlessly with the club’s pressing game, hassling and chasing down defenders from the front. Judging by the praise from certain quarters, his arrival looks yet another good bit of business from Rodgers, though ultimately, the future of Luis Suarez is likely to determine just where the new boy is utilised. If Rodgers decides to sell his star man, Aspas could well vie with Daniel Sturridge for the central role, though the pair could also alternate on the right, with Rodgers even looking for an interchanging front three along with Philippe Coutinho during matches.

The rumoured deal for Shakhtar Donetsk’s Henrikh Mkhitaryan will also play a part in how we assess the Anfield landscape, with the Armenian’s preference for a role in “the hole” suggesting a move to 4-2-3-1 if he eventually completes his mooted move. Certainly, Rodgers’ desire for increased squad competition this season looks on the cards, though Aspas can surely be expected to knock the likes of Stewart Downing down the pecking order. Although the Liverpool boss sang Alberto’s praises after snapping up the youngster last week, his lack of first-team experience may see him settle for game time from the bench, while the likes of Raheem Sterling and Fabio Borini may have to accept squad roles in the campaign ahead.

Aspas’ price is obviously key across the Fantasy games. Liverpool racked up 71 goals in their first season under Rodgers – the fourth most impressive record in the Premier League – highlighting the potential of their main attacking assets. A cost of around 8.5 to 9.5 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL) seems likely and if Suarez does indeed depart, the Spaniard could well be earmarked by many managers as a real alternative to Sturridge as part of our front three. Ideally, it would suit Fantasy managers best for Suarez to still be at Merseyside when the player price lists are revealed next month and then leave before the season starts – this would ensure he comes in at a cost in accordance with last term’s displays and allow the Reds’ other forwards a kinder price tag. Suarez is, of course, suspended for Liverpool’s opening six fixtures of the season and while Sturridge is currently nursing an ankle injury, he is expected to be ready well in advance for the opener in a couple of months’ time.

There’s no doubt that Coutinho’s cost is also likely to have a say in our plans, though. If, as expected, he remains classified as a midfielder, a price of around 8.0 to 8.5 may be enough to persuade many to invest in the brilliant Brazilian and free up a vital space for our forward three. Given that he produced nine or more points in three of the last four Gameweeks of 2012/13, the former Inter man may well prove the best value of any Liverpool attacker next time round, though if Aspas turns out to be Suarez’s direct replacement, both Coutinho and Sturridge have already shown it’s not all about marquee signings when assessing Liverpool’s Fantasy prospects.

The fixture list is also in Liverpool’s favour. With home games against Stoke, Southampton and Palace allied with trips to Villa, Swansea and Sunderland, Rodgers’ side have the strongest schedule of any side in the opening seven Gameweeks, according to our season ticker. Goals seem likely, then, but picking the correct Liverpool option is becoming increasingly tricky as Rodgers continues to strengthen his options – there is no denying Aspas is a quality signing but perhaps it’ll be only at the end of August, when the transfer window slams shut and Liverpool’s shopping spree is done, that we’re likely to get a better handle on his Fantasy potential for the season ahead.

As the season gets closer I wondered how many fantasy football games each season players play. I normally play the Fantasy League Classic game, is entering more than one game too much? I'm thinking of joining some others FPL, Sky, Dream Team

I should have done this a long time ago but I just looked at how often I used my 5th mid last season and shocked myself. 11 times; 4 times by choice and 7 times enforced. That's a lot more than I thought. And only once did they bring me any returns of note (Sterling's goal)

I'll be putting more money into my 5th mid this year. Seasoned veterans, feel free to scoff knowingly 😉

For sure. And I have found that I can't enjoy the game if I'm agonising over which to play. I need someone good enough to fill in with a decent chance of returns, but not so good that I have a selection headache. That's a difficult balancing act.

You just need to get better at picking them. I rotated Lallana/Sterling for ages and hit every goal/assist. Then I got Puncheon who was pretty darn good until he went for a sh!t. Heck even Noble got me 5 in the week I played him.

I like the strategy. I think many play five mids more often than not. This year will be trying to seek the value in two rotating cheap forwards (Kone, Benteke, Carrol, etc...) and keep aguero/higuan as my consistent starter. With RVP it makes it more difficult to invest in those players that you rotate often. Thinking not having him this year will be a better way to go in order to have that better set of five mids. Would really like to have Baines and a Chelsea defender throughout the year but this type of strategy may not afford that.

I've been thinking about a 3-5-2. My main issue with that is that the bargain forwards are more expensive than the bargain mids so you end up with less to spend on the main starters.

Here's one way to look at it. If you're spending an extra £1m on your 5th mid, you're taking away £1m from somewhere else in your squad. £1m equates roughly to between 20 and 25 points over the season so if your 5th mid is going to play for you 11 times over the season, that's a required PPG of around 2 over and above what your uber-cheap 5th mid was earning you.

So if you had Sterling or Puncheon at £4.5 and a 3.4PPG, you're now looking for a £5.5m mid with a PPG of around 5.4 to break even. Good luck finding that, the highest PPG from a mid with regular playing time and a price of £5.5m or lower was Maloney at 3.6.

Conclusion: stick with your uber-cheap 5th mid and use the money elsewhere.

Great stuff as always Mr Turd, can you bothered to work out the equivalent figures for strikers?

I.e. if you were choosing to play 3-5-2 what's the step up in benefit between having a bargain basement occasional 3rd striker and spending an extra million?

OK, so strikers earned around 19 points per £m last season, so this is what you're looking to gain by spending £1m more on a 3rd striker spot. If you're getting the same playing time from your 3rd striker as Roscola was from his 5th mid (i.e. 11 games over the season), this implies you're looking for an additional PPG of 1.7 over what your bargain basement 3rd striker was getting you.

So for last season, this was possible if you were upgrading from say Jay Rodriguez (starting price £5.5m; PPG of 3.1) to Benteke (starting price £6.5m; PPG of 4.9). Or pretty much anyone at £5.5m or lower to Lambert (starting price £6m, PPG 4.9).

Interesting, thanks for putting in the legwork and the time to come back and post this - appreciate it. Seems there's a bigger step up in value per million spent at the lower end of the striker market than the lower end of the midfield market. Worth remembering I think.

True, there's always one or two at that price range who come out of the woodwork. If you're getting 11 games out of them, on a PPG of say 3.5 that's 38 points they can expect to earn you over the season, so definitely worth the hit early on to get on the right horse.

That's the gamble. Many also thought Maloney and Noble would do well and, with high ownership and low productivity they'd both dropped 0.3 in value by September. But I guess if you're gut is telling you he'll hit the ground running then go for it.

It's the fixtures that sway me.

He was bought as Norwich struggled to score goals (check out some of Snodgrass' stats in terms of chances created)

I had a hunch on Snodgrass last season for 1 GW, people laughed then he got 2 goals and assist (and I listened to the advice)

Same thing happened with Nolan GW38.

This time i'm following my gut as long as the price is right

Good call last year on Snodgrass - but I don't remember him having the same hype as RvW. I'm not trying to talk you out of getting him (might even do it myself depending on price) - but if i do I wouldn't want to have another high ownership unproven player in the squad - as I'd want to get rid without losing too much or taking a points hit.

Just out of interested, though there has been some fantastic work done on 3 and 4 way defensive rotations has anyone looked at a 5 way rotation? Post GW1 I'm considering a downgrade of my Chelsea defender to a budget option (possibly from Cardiff or Hull) in order to go big on attack. Just wondered who people thought might be the 5 teams to look at given I'm likely to go for the Ruddy/Boruc combo as keepers

I have this bookmarked already 😀

Only problem I have with it is that it contains Newcastle. I have 2 worries on them

        a) Prices - not sure any will be 4.5

        b) Kinnear - will he have any impact

The rest of those teams are on my radar, though I might like a Cardiff defender. Great work though 😀

I think the scouts have got it a bit wrong on this one. I just cannot see him being close to £9.5m. I'd have thought £7m was more likely, given his pedigree. Maybe £7.5m

Is there any database/tool to find out regulars team names on here? I was in a couple of forum H2H leagues last year and hadn't a clue who I was facing as alot of people (including myself) have different team name and manager name to their nicknames here.

If there isn't would it be a good idea to set one up so we would know whan we might be facing one and other in H2H matches.

Maybe most of the regs do know each others teams, but might be good for those of us who arent quite as regular as other 🙂

Failing that i'm sure it's something one of the spreadsheet gurus, could whip up, but this would require alot more work on the individuals behalf

Arsenal Starting XI if we sign Fellaini + Higuain:

    ----------------------------------------------- Szeszny -----------------------------------------------
    Monreal/Gibbs - Mertesacker/Verm - Koscielny - Sagna/Jenkinson
    -------------------------------------- Arteta --------- Fellaini --------------------------------------
    Walcott ---------------------------------- Wilshere ---------------------------------- Cazorla
    ----------------------------------------------- Higuain -----------------------------------------------

Cazorla is going to be getting in Walcott's way a bit there.

Wilshere could be a great option if he plays there.

The trick with Wilshere is staying healthy. He always plays in the hole when fit.

    I love these;

A young man had a girlfriend. He was getting tired of her because she sent him messages every hour that said "I miss you" or "I love you". One night before bed he received a message, but rather than read it went to sleep. In the morning he was awakened by a call. It was girlfriend's mother crying saying that his girlfriend was killed last night. He was in a state of shock, went to read the message: "My sweetheart, come quickly, I think someone is following me!". And Now EveryDay He Comes And Brings One Extra Flower To The Site Where She Was Murdered. Moral of the story: never rejects those who love, care, and try to reach out to you, because one day you'll realize you lost the moon while counting the stars!

The actual moral is dont be a needy b1tch.

Someone posted yesterday it looks like Mikel is leaving Chelsea. That along with Schurlle and Lukaku returning, could it not mean Oscar plays deep like he did occasionally last year. Would be a FPL waste if he played that Modric/Alonso role.

Would be a great signing for you. CM is probably your weakest part of your team in my opinion.
