Scout Report – Andre Schurrle

Jose Mourinho kick-started his summer spending spree earlier today with the signing of Andre Schurrle from German outfit Bayer Leverkusen. The 22-year-old arrives at Stamford Bridge for a fee reportedly in the region of £18m and is believed to have been a long-term target of the west London outfit:

Negotiations had been at an advanced stage prior to Mourinho’s reinstallation and, after the Portuguese manager green lit the deal, Chelsea confirmed they had reached an agreement for Schurrle’s transfer earlier this month. Having passed a medical and signed on the dotted line, Schurrle admitted he’s delighted to be given the chance to play under The Special One:

“I’m really looking forward to working with him. I got to know him at Michael Ballack’s testimonial a few weeks ago where we talked a little bit. He gave me advice on where to live and also explained what he expects from me. He’s a very good person with a big personality; he’s a great manager so it’s an absolute honour for me to now be one of his players.”

The History

Schurrle joined Bundesliga side Mainz O5 as a youngster and was fielded in their youth set-up for three years before making his first-team debut at the age of 18 in August 2009. His impact was immediate and, having notched five goals and a pair of assist in 33 appearances, he caught the eye of Leverkusen – in September 2010, Schurrle agreed to join the club for the start of the following campaign but not before racking up 15 goals and four assists in 33 matches, breaking the club’s previous record for goals scored in a single Bundesliga season.

His first term at Leverkusen proved more of a settling-in period for Schurrle as he produced seven goals and four assists over 31 league fixtures but last season he stepped up in performance. Fielded as an inverted winger on the left of a front three, he delivered 11 goals and seven assists from 34 matches, helping his side to third spot in the Bundesliga behind Champions League finalists Bayern Munich and Borussia Dortmund. Schurrle has represented his country on 10 occasions at youth level, scoring seven times, and has also produced seven goals from 24 appearances for the senior side.

The Prospects

From a Fantasy perspective, the German’s arrival merely compounds the number of midfield options already on offer at the Bridge. Juan Mata and Eden Hazard finished in the top five Fantasy Premier League (FPL) midfield standings with 212 points and 190 points respectively, Oscar ended the season particularly strong after netting in three of his last five starts, while Frank Lampard was the club’s top scorer after finding the net on 15 occasions.

If Mourinho maintains the 4-2-3-1 formation he utilised in Madrid, Schurrle will add to the competition for the three spaces in the attacking midfield three – with Kevin De Bruyne having already been given assurances he will be part of next term’s squad and the likes of Victor Moses also offering options, there’s no shortage of possibilities to potentially frustrate Fantasy managers. With Mata and Hazard apparently nailed on, the new boy may well battle it out with Oscar for the remaining slot, though the two have contrasting styles – while the Brazilian’s keen eye for a pass means he could also be fielded as a deep-lying playmaker, Schurrle is more pacy and direct and, standing at six foot, even offers an alternative up top; a position he’s been utilised in for the German national side on occasion.

Schurrle can be a frustrating player at times, though. Cutting inside onto his favoured right foot, his penchant for speculative long range efforts has led to accusations of selfishness, with more of his shots finding the stands than the back of the net – while his speed and work-rate will be advantageous within Mourinho’s system, the new boy may need to subscribe to the team ethic in order to thrive. Given that Mata is expected to keep the central, playmaking role – similar to Mesut Ozil at Real – Hazard’s displays on the left suggest Schurrle may have to move to the opposite flank in order to prosper; a role the German is unaccustomed to, though he admitted earlier today:

“In attack I can play in every position, but I think wide on the left is my best position because I can cut inside and score goals with my right foot, which I hope to be able to do here, but I am confident playing anywhere offensively.”

Bearing in mind that he featured up front for Bayer, Schurrle’s classification across the Fantasy games remains up for debate, though the fact that Eden Hazard was also utilised on the front left of a 4-3-3 in his final season at Lille yet was listed as a midfielder perhaps hints at what’s to come. Certainly, the performances of Mata and Hazard in 2012/13 are set to elevate the duo’s prices; a rise to somewhere in the region of 10.5 to 11.0 in the FPL wouldn’t surprise, considering only two forwards – Robin Van Persie and Luis Suarez – managed to outscore the pair last time round. The new boy’s cost will be relatively cheaper, then, with 8.5 to 9.5 perhaps on the cards, though a possible classification as a striker, however unlikely, would almost certainly rule him out of consideration.

In a situation similar to last season, Chelsea’s European Super Cup duties against Bayern Munich in late August may afford us a double Gameweek 1 to get the season underway. Though the Premier League has yet to confirm this, it would see Mourinho’s men welcome Hull and Villa to the Bridge and bring huge interest their way, with major investment looking essential to getting our seasons off to a flier. Pre-season should afford us time to assess Mourinho’s intentions, though for all his undoubted talents, Schurrle will need to convince early on to oust the likes of Mata, Hazard and even Lampard from the majority of initial Fantasy line-ups if, as expected, the double Gameweek drops on to the schedule.

If I see another Liverpool post...... come on, don't get your hopes up, Utd, City, Chelsea, Arsenal and Spurs still have a better squad than you, hence the reason why your so busy in the transfer market.

All these 5 men rotations etc , its an interesting excercise , but in relity it not going to work in practice.
For example what do you do when one of the good teams starts playing an unheralded 4.5 defender or say if cuellar or someone is signed by a big club.
You just going to ignore them becuse they not part of your rotation?

Eight week plans just wont happen fpl too fluid and changeable

I have said this earlier, it is all good going with these rotation stuff and plans, but at the end of the day FPL is won by gut instinct and not by following rotations. Rotations will be out of the window quickly.

Meh. Keepers won't make or break you.

I assume to get 2 points per week from them. All else is a bonus.

But 2 points isn't the worst case scenario. Not when 6 goals get conceded and he gets sent off for fouling a player through on goal.

I'm not particularly arguing the merits of a 5-man rotation, but that isn't a great argument against - if a player became available in the manner you describe you'd just transfer him in for one of the 5 and play him every week. Your 5-man rotation becomes a 4-man rotation with two of them playing every week.

        Morninggggg

Rotations are a funny thing. Depending how you view it you can maximise returns on it anyway. Don't think there is ONE way to maximise points from defense.

After all, we haven't considered unique permutations like doubling/tripling up, ofensive defs etc.

Morning BG, absolutely, I never fail to fail with my defence so I'm all ears when it comes to tactics 🙂

From a purely logical point of view I actually favour doubling/tripling in defence - if you think the team will keep clean sheets have the courage of your convictions - that kind of thing. On the other hand, the 'don't put all your eggs in one basket' argument has some merit too.

I'm pretty strict when it comes to who to play and who to bench from within my squad and always consider each player on their own merits, regardless of who else is already in the team. None of this 'who should I bench given that I already have player x playing' nonsense. Can't say the same for my transfers/initial squad selection though.

The spirit is willing, the mouse clicking finger is weak 😉

Ah that happens to the best of us.

Well the only "tactic" I can say now is that our tactics have to adapt to the FPL environment. I do find that in terms of FPL, the last 4-5 seasons have thrown up some very, umm, "various" statistics and the tactics we employ to get a 1-up over our rivals will have to change according to season trends.

For instance, doubling/tripling would have worked for Stoke/Norwich during their CS period, just takes guts and conviction (+ a little bit of planning to phase them out) to garner the points. Obviously every strategy will have its flaws, but I'm sure I'm stating the obvious already 😛

In the mean time, it's probably best to list all the strategies down possible (that Tommy hasn't written down in his FPL for Dummies book) so that we're at least prepared for those trends.

I think I'm probably blessed in terms of understanding the theory but cursed in that I can never apply it - or at least not at the right time. I think that's the most crucial point - timing.

Identifying the times when a bandwagon is doomed to fail and to steer clear as opposed to when it's vital to get on board, etc.

It's what did for me this season - I stubbornly avoided Michu and Fellaini pre-Christmas, confident their points would dry up. I then caved, wildcarded them in and their points dried up. Terrible judgment!

Chelsea squad next season (Guesswork at this stage, of course):

    Keepers: Cech, Blackman
Defenders: Azpi Ivanovic, Cahill Terry Omeruo Luiz , Cole Bertrand
Midfielders: Mikel Lampard Oscar Debruyne Ramires, Moses Mata Hazard Schurrle Marin
    Strikers: Torres Ba Lukaku

With a probable striker incoming, and the midfield a minefield, I'd suggest Mata + defence is the way forward for (D)GW1

I am pretty certain I am wildcard of early, just get cech plus a Norwich keeper for a few weeks
Then get cole/a cheaper Chelsea defender or one of Oscar/hazard/mata(if he statys)/new striker
Then get the one one/another of those midfielders

        Do not get;

Jesus you had it easy, we had to build our own school with the bags of rocks we carried 15 Irish miles uphill, and afterwards had to chase rabbits for our dinner.

I'm very excited by all the LFC transfer activity.
Barnes, Beardsley and Aldridge are all top quality and will be top FPL assets too.
Now if we can just add Houghton to that list I think we'll be looking at a memorable season.

I think that Ferguson guy might be sacked too. United losers, lol.

I must say I'm very impressed with level of knowledge around these parts regarding "foreigners".
Personally, I rarely watch the CL before the QF stage, don't watch any European league matches apart from the odd big Spanish one.
I reckon 95% of FPL players are the same, so FFS is at its finest during pre-season for a bit of all-in-one research.

If City don't sign another striker, I can see Aguero's price drop being somewhat torpedoed now, maybe just a 0.5 drop to 11. Although personally I think that is a fair price considering his talent!

Maybe Fpl can be fooled into thinking Sinclair will get his shot at glory next season as chief striker. Heh.

Liverpool very active. Mignolet is a done deal. Reina will be on his way I'm sure. The usual sounds coming from the club and the player about him staying but I'm certain he'll go (Barca?)
We should've taken the 20m offer from Arsenal 2 summers ago for Pepe..it coincided with his loss of form 🙁

At least Migs has potential to be a long term solution to the GK spot. Some room to grow as well. Just a question of mentality, as he will have less work to do (saves), but has to keep the concentration for the 90+ and make the saves when required. Playing for Sunderland, he would see allot more action.

Proven GKs likely to be priced at 4.5 - 5.0 next season:

    4.5
    Ruddy (Norwich)
    Boruc (Southampton)
    Westwood (Sunderland)
    Guzan (Aston Villa)

    5.0
    Krul (Newcastle)
    Foster (West Brom)
    Jaaskelainen (West Ham)

    Begovic (Stoke)

How important is building team value early in the season to your FPL rank? How many of you play your WC early(eg during international break) to specifically build TV early on?

Triggerlips touched on the importance of TV for him by Dec, in his approach to FPL. I had a look at the top 5 overall ranked players, their TV by 30 Dec and when they played WC:

    1) 106.6m/Gw 2
    2) 107.1m/Gw22
    3) 107m/Gw 2
    4) 106.7m/Gw 22
    Evs) 107m/Gw 22

Versus the very respectable ranks of:

    Acqua) 105.2m/ Gw 5 - overall rank 328th
    Jafalad) 105.4/ Gw 5 - overall rank 9958th

How do you guys approach the matter?

TV has no importance to me whatsoever. It's about getting the right players in and then TV will take care of itself.

Usually play my w/c in the first 8 gwks though.

Not even gunna lie I rage WCded this past season, sold RVP, and everything went downhill. I wildcarded right after he got me 1pt as captain. 😆

This season I'll probably just make a team that looks decent for the first 3-4 weeks, and go from there. If I need to use my WC early to filter in players, so be it. But if I can get the core group right at the start, I can save it for a big DGW down the line.

I played my WC in Gw 4, after 10 of my 15 squad members were either injured, booked, or out of favour. 😎

I focus on TV from a near-term perspective i.e. timing the transfer during the week before a change kicks in. If I see something coming up in the next couple of weeks - a form player with a dgw coming up that will bandwagon - then I'll transfer them in early too.

I will save the wc for post-Christmas though. I like to take advantage of fixture pile-ups and change the team for the run-in.

This is a very interesting point. While I feel that TV does contribute to getting a decent FPL rank in terms of being able to afford the minimum amount of "in form" big hitters that are established mid season, I also find that TV is quite deceptive, as it doesn't absolutely reflect how much money you actually have to work with.

This is due to the (slightly) flawed concept of TV in the first place. If you have a TV of 106 for example, essentially it means that you have gained 6m in rises and if you sell all your players, you "should" theoretically gain 3 million from half the profits. However, if you did cash in on profits earlier in the season, say when you bought Michu at 6.5 and sold him at 8 ish for Fellaini, your sell value would be much higher than those who are still holding on to Michu.

Anyway, answering your other question directly, I wouldn't use my WC to BUILD team value, I'd build TV by chasing "established" bandwagons, especially if they're good ones, like Jafalad said. I'd actually use my WC to make use of that TV to afford say a different set of big hitters in order to fit certain budget players/eliminate deadwood.

It's not a popular approach I'm guessing, but at least it's a different perspective. My (un)respectable rank doesn't help either 😛

Interesting point, as many cashed in on Bale when he was injured while others held on and benched him. Same with Rvp that many sold(me included) for Benteke when we knew Rvp was not going to play.

So yes, in that sense TV is deceptive. I guess the higher ranked players will usually have higher TV since they selected the high scoring players after all. And in most cases earlier then the rest of us.

Mmm it depends as well. You made several very interesting cases after all. Most of us know about Acqua's rank say, mid-season so people don't necessarily have to have picked the good players earlier than us.

Anyway, I would like to stress that for some cases (like Acqua's) a relatively high TV isn't exactly necessary to gain an achievable rank. But on most cases like the top 5, the use of their wildcards in and around GW20 would probably have had greater impact as they would have more options (and data to work with) when picking the number of big hitters they would like.

The crucial thing is to be on the first two big bandwagons, and then to build an excess of a cheap defender, 4.0. If you haven't got to the price of a cheap midfielder by Christmas, you have done something wrong - and you are in trouble.

So, 105.5 by Christmas, or else!

My lessons learned for the wc are...

Hold post Xmas, when fa cup hits - dgw fever arrives.

It really got me out of jail when the Chelsea one arrived at VERY short notice, I didn't hold one dgw prior and had no chance to build up players without multiple hits.

You can build TV as you go throughout the season, my TV was ok but some were a LOT higher than mine.

      PS - nice topic / post. 😉

Haz: 9.5m->10.3m by gw 5(He increased by 0.5m in gw 3 when he didn't even have a fxiture!)
        Ivanovic: 6.5m->7m by gw 5.

Same here. On a daily basis, especially if a big hitter is injured. Helps to get an idea what the rest of the managers/players are doing as well when it comes to a direct replacement.

      Nice post.

I wonder if cause and effect are being confused here though - those managers who are at the top will, by and large, have had the best performing players up to that point. The best performing players are the ones who go up in value as the bandwagon builds. It's quite possible that they gave very little thought to TV and it took care of itself.

I'm selling this theory because it's what I try to do. I'm just not very good at it!

Nice topic. I'm going to try to ignore price rises next season, don't do rash early transfers and save WC post-xmas. I genuinely that if you try to take price rises out of the decision making process, your decisions will be based more around the merits of the player itself, not the fact that he "will go up 0.1 tonight" or the fact that you "won't be able to afford him if you wait one more day". It blinded me quite a few times last season.

      Morning,

      For what it's worth I believe chasing TV last season was ultimately a flawed concept. I say this for a couple of reasons;

      1. I can't remember a season where so many bandwagons stayed bandwagons for so long.
      2. I can't remember a single early transfer back firing on anybody. there were very few injuries that effected them. This gave confidence to the early transfer. So much so we started seeing Mark making early transfers.
      3. The way players gained value changed last season. Previous seasons it went 30k, 60k, 120k for the 0.3 rise in a week. Last season it was a flat 30k for every 0.1. I really hope FPL look at reversing this.
      4. The team to have at the end of the season actually didn't require a high TV to get it.
      5. We saw a lot that with a bit of patience, your original pick came good. Bale and Mata early in the season were good examples of people switching around to ultimately end up with the original two players.

Can we really expect point 1 and 2 to happen this season? I doubt it. Like others are saying with the good squad management, you can raise you TV without having to wildcard or make rash early transfers.

Nice post. Got me thinking 🙂

Early wildcarders definitely did well last year by setting up your team up to the xmas wildcard. While it is good for building TV if your team is in reasonable shape in the first few gameweeks, you can still build TV fair;ly easily by buying the hot players.

Last year i played both wildcards for DGW'S (held my wildcard until very late (last DGW)) and shot up the rankings on both occasions with inside top 1K gw's. When to use it is REALLY a case of points v TV. I will be doing the same this year and will be setting my team up for the medium term i.e. avoiding 3 chelsea and leaving myself more flexible than last year.

I Wc'd in GW 15 and my TV by the end of the year was 107.5. For me, TV is less important than my overall team structure/performance. I definitely wildcarded a bit later than I would have wanted to - I wish I had used it early..but to change up my team, not necessarily gain TV.

This is my second season so I have limited past experience to look back on. First season, i think I wildcarded around GW10 or so.

So in summary - for me, team performance/structure will be a more important element than just to gain value!

I think this Internet Explorer hate should end sometime soon.

I personally use IE10, which I find better and faster than Chrome and Firefox, the interface is way better, helps me streamlessly sync with my Outlook mailbox, and yes, opens a lot of pages which Chrome cannot.

The ones who have completely ditched Explorer, I would ask you to try IE10, especially if you have a Windows 8 PC. You won't be disappointed.

Possibly. I'm definitely thinking about Koren as we are going to need at least 1 cheap filler in MF.

Its just really unfortunate that there seems to be a paucity of good FPL calibre players with this lot of promoted teams. None of the uninjured players from the promoted clubs look like they're up to much FPL wise though.

I like Speroni as a cheap keeper for save points but slim pickings here, man.

Palace had the one striker worth getting and he's out till Christmas I think. Sad times indeed.

Higuain is a great poacher with a keen eye for goal, can see him scoring 20+ if he can stay injury free. What do you guys think?

Talk was Juve and Arsenal had agreed personal terms with Higuain, and all they had to do was agree a transfer fee with Real. I assume that now, with Tevez moving to Juve, they will give up on Higuain.

I think you might be looking at this with slightly blinkered FPL vision. Felli was awesome in FPL but by all accounts and several live games he wasn't the best "player" for team winning, etc.
I'm sure his presence would help Arsenal but I'm not sure him and higuain would do the trick for them to realistically challenge.

Look at Fellaini compared to YaYa. More points but would not add half as much.

I agree, you cant compare Fellaini to Yaya, but Arsenal's midfiled would definitely improve with his presence. Thing is Arsene has to figure out what to do with Wilshere and Cazorla. In think if he can find out how to utilise the two at max Arsenal look a very strong team on paper.

This is one of the problems. Arsenal always look string in paper but just lack that cohesion and consistency to really challenge. Hopefully (for them) they will keep their back 4 and build a proper defensive relationship (sagna being the most likely removal) as it started to gel at the end of the season. Youve nailed the issue though. Good players but firing them all in to a system that works. That's the key. I think they need an unsexy player to give a little more freedom, but fans and sponsors don't get excited by the classic defensive midfield type. Ironic really as Spurs look to have 3 high class box to box players next season with dembele, Sandro and paulinho.

Could form convince you to play 5 in defence?
Not including blank weeks or widespread injuries, do you think you would ever elect to play 5 at the back? Would the right combination of fixtures and form make you do it, if you had a fully fit squad?

With 3-4-3 the first choice formation, i was just wondering. I know it's actually probably irrelevant as no-one is going to get 5 worthy defenders, all having good fixtures, but if suddenly a couple OOP defender must haves pop up, it's plausible.

i dunno about 5 at the back, but i dont mind going expensive at the back once in a while..
Baines Luiz Kompany(hope he drops this year) could be a possibility IF there are no budget standouts(and there always are)

Agreed its an unlikely scenario. But 3 expensive players and then say Brady comes in as a defender and is playing 'in the hole', with, I don't know, say Wilson playing left wing (and well) for Stoke. If you had sone dodgy fixtures for mid and striker it's possible.

Would it be enough to tempt though? I'm not sure.

All that being said, being flexible is key to FPL success.

If you had to pick two of:

    Cavani (Che)
    Higuain (Ars)
    Aguero (Mci)

To start the season with, which two would you pick?

Secondly, if Dzeko starts cheap again and is a regular starter, a front line of:

Cavani- Higuain- Dzeko looks amazing for the first 3-4 weeks.

Higuain gonna be a must have for me.. gonna be underpriced as compared to the other top 5 club strikers(even if only by 0.5/1 mill). City will buy a striker and cloud the dzeko issue. I remember the city fans saying dzeko not good enough for 90 mins at the tail end of last season
