Cardiff City made their first foray into the summer transfer window earlier this week by snapping up Andreas Cornelius from FC Copenhagen for a reported club record fee of £8.5m.

The 20-year-old – who has previously been linked with Everton and Stoke – arrives on a five-year deal and, having completed his medical on Monday morning, will link up with the Bluebirds first-team squad after a short vacation.

In an interview with the club’s official website, Cornelius went on to say:

“This is a dream come true for me. I’ve been given a great opportunity and this is a very exciting project that’s taking place at Cardiff City. I’m very happy to be here and to be playing for this club in the Premier League. There were opportunities for me this summer and I had to think about what was the right thing to do, the correct step for me to take in terms of my career. I was impressed by what the club is trying to do, the fact it has reached the Premier League and that it has a passionate fan base supporting it.”

The History

Handed his first-team debut in April last year, Cornelius made a couple of brief sub appearances before starting the 2012/13 season as a first-team regular. The six foot four forward – who is nicknamed “The Danish Tank” – quickly demonstrated his target man potential and over the course of his first full season, racked up 18 goals and five assists in just 34 appearances. Cornelius’ displays helped Copenhagen power their way to the title and earned him the club’s Player of the Year award. He has represented his country at Under 18, 19 and 21 level a total of 22 times, finding the net on six occasions, and has notched once in seven appearances for the senior side.

The Prospects

As discussed in last month’s article on Cardiff’s title-winning season, Mackay’s preference for a target man was a real feature of his side’s play. Heidar Helguson was mainly utilised in the role last time out and subsequently ended up the Welsh outfit’s top scorer with nine goals and six assists over 39 appearances but with the former QPR man moving on and Mackay clearly not convinced by Rude Gestede, Cornelius is set to fill the space vacated by Helguson’s departure.

Whether as a lone striker in a 4-5-1 or as part of a two-man frontline in a 4-4-2, Cornelius is likely to be assured game time, then, with the Bluebirds looking to supply him with crosses aplenty from the flanks. While the diminutive Fraizer Campbell impressed with seven goals in 12 appearances since moving to the club in January, he may struggle to mirror Cornelius’ game time on the road, with Mackay’s somewhat tentative tactics likely to see Cardiff start many away games with one up top and perhaps move to a front pairing later on in matches. Craig Bellamy also offers an option through the middle in a front two but with his pace and tenacity on the flank a key part of Mackay’s 4-5-1 formation, his appeal is somewhat diminished.

Given that Cardiff were hardly prolific last term (72 goals in total, with 37 at home and 35 away), their chief attacking assets seem likely to be kindly priced across the Fantasy games. A cost of around 5.5 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL) for Cornelius looks about right but with just one full season of football under his belt, many will be sceptical as to whether he can mirror last term’s exploits.

The Dane not only possesses the work-rate, power and physique to complement Mackay’s approach, he is also a tricky customer on the ground for someone of his size – with home games against City, Everton and Spurs, in addition to trips to West Ham and Fulham in the first six Gameweeks, though, the opening schedule looks enough to deter any initial suitors. With only an away day at fellow new boys Hull over that spell seeming favourable, Fantasy managers may well be prepared to hold fire and allow Cornelius time to settle before deciding whether he’s worth the investment as a budget third forward for the season ahead.

Michu MK II or just another of many Boselliesque failures.

You've always got to bet on the latter but a viable 5.5 striker option would be interesting. Can't remember one since DJ Campbell (J Rod for a bit last year as well I suppose).

I fell right into the Pog trap when I went for the power 5 last year. This year Cardiff's starting fixtures are bad enough to avoid any of their attackers.

What's happened to British players going abroad to play?

Apart from a couple across in the states, bad boy Barton in France, Franz Ferdinand in Turkey and Heskey in Oz there's not much else is there?

Other than Hargreaves (who was born there?) who was last Brit to play in Germany?

Holtby is half british if that counts? It's a good point though. Is it because teams from other countries have no interest in our players or because our players have no interest in going to other countries?

Money aside though, I would have expected some would have wanted to experience playing in another country at some point. If you were a young unattached player that wasn't getting first team football over here, would you not be chomping at the bit to go out on loan to a club in another top European League? I'd imagine you'd still be paid the same by your parent club.

Probably lots of reasons why this doesn't happen, blooding their own youngsters rather than bringing in foreign players,, The language barrier, The upheaval etc. You don't seem to hear of foreign teams actually making moves to sign many british players.

Played for Chelsea and Wolves, decidedly average CB.

As for the reason why so few go abroad, I would have thought it's simply down to wages. A mid-table side in the PL pays far higher wages than the equivalent in Spain etc.

According to Transfermarkt, there are 214 English players playing abroad. Take out the 39 playing in Scotland and the 13 in Ireland, that's still 162 playing outside of these isles.

Good question. I have very little sympathy with overpaid and undertalented young British players whining about lack of opportunities at Premier League clubs when they won't go abroad to gain playing experience.

It's a while ago now, but Paul Lambert risked everything to leave Motherwell and have a trial at Borussia Dortmund. He knuckled down, won a place in the BVB squad and ultimately gained a Champions League medal. They still speak very highly of him in Dortmund.

The tactical knowledge and experience of the German approach to football then shaped his future career and managerial style. Very good article on this in The Guardian:

Always worth remembering in this debate that the PL hasn't always been the biggest cash cow in world football...At a time when Serie A had the lions share of foreign talent very few English (or British) players made it into Serie A either...Gazza being the very notable exception...Truth is they want very few of our players either then or now and the majority of our players playing abroad are doing it because they are at the tail end of their careers or through some personal anomolie (Hargreaves)

True. British players have a reputation for being tactically limited and unwilling either to adapt to a foreign culture or to learn a new language.

Wayne Rooney's agent has been hawking him round countless European clubs since the spring, and no-one is seriously interested.

I was going with him right upto the last paragraph where it gave his opening fixtures. Had hoped he might be 5.0 too. Can see him being an option once those fixtures are out the way. If I needed to have 3 cheapies in the front 8 at any stage I could see him being one I would play week in week out (rotating the two cheapie mids).

I'll have to watch an early game to see him play but if P.Hernandez comes in at 6.0 and Cornelius is at 5.5, that looks a decent H/A rotation with a slight shift in formation.

@ffmiphone: My Jedi senses tell me that #FPL will go live on Thursday 18th July

Could be based on nothing but he is a developer of a FPL iPhone app (not the official one) so could have some inside info

Since its not the official app I doubt he has inside knowledge, FPL Towers won't have an exact release date themselves anyway.

Likely to be an attempt to get some free advertising on fantasy football sites. Job done 😉

How will the new offside rule change affect FPL? The wording of the artice is so confusing - not sure if it means more goals or less!

He could be the catalyst for Campbell to score big if he stays fit. Plenty of knock downs, flick ons etc

for likely value I'll be looking at Kim, Campbell and/or wanyama if we get him

That would be very nice. I remember at the beginning of last season, trying to pick an attacking player from Man City - those who went with Tevez struck gold and those who went with Aguero struggled.

Could be similar story this year - Dzeko, Tevez, Aguero, a potential new addition?

Yeah, there's scope for that again. Perhaps more so with a new manager and unknown preferences. Will be interesting to see what he does with Dzeko. Could well be this year's Tevez.

Not sure about him even at that price though. With these new additions - Navas and Fernandinho - I can see assists being shared out all over the place and they're only left with two who predominantly stick them away. I'd prefer a striker for City coverage.
