Scout Reports

Scout Report – Andreas Cornelius

Cardiff City made their first foray into the summer transfer window earlier this week by snapping up Andreas Cornelius from FC Copenhagen for a reported club record fee of £8.5m.

The 20-year-old – who has previously been linked with Everton and Stoke – arrives on a five-year deal and, having completed his medical on Monday morning, will link up with the Bluebirds first-team squad after a short vacation.

In an interview with the club’s official website, Cornelius went on to say:

“This is a dream come true for me. I’ve been given a great opportunity and this is a very exciting project that’s taking place at Cardiff City. I’m very happy to be here and to be playing for this club in the Premier League. There were opportunities for me this summer and I had to think about what was the right thing to do, the correct step for me to take in terms of my career. I was impressed by what the club is trying to do, the fact it has reached the Premier League and that it has a passionate fan base supporting it.”

The History

Handed his first-team debut in April last year, Cornelius made a couple of brief sub appearances before starting the 2012/13 season as a first-team regular. The six foot four forward – who is nicknamed “The Danish Tank” – quickly demonstrated his target man potential and over the course of his first full season, racked up 18 goals and five assists in just 34 appearances. Cornelius’ displays helped Copenhagen power their way to the title and earned him the club’s Player of the Year award. He has represented his country at Under 18, 19 and 21 level a total of 22 times, finding the net on six occasions, and has notched once in seven appearances for the senior side.

The Prospects

As discussed in last month’s article on Cardiff’s title-winning season, Mackay’s preference for a target man was a real feature of his side’s play. Heidar Helguson was mainly utilised in the role last time out and subsequently ended up the Welsh outfit’s top scorer with nine goals and six assists over 39 appearances but with the former QPR man moving on and Mackay clearly not convinced by Rude Gestede, Cornelius is set to fill the space vacated by Helguson’s departure.

Whether as a lone striker in a 4-5-1 or as part of a two-man frontline in a 4-4-2, Cornelius is likely to be assured game time, then, with the Bluebirds looking to supply him with crosses aplenty from the flanks. While the diminutive Fraizer Campbell impressed with seven goals in 12 appearances since moving to the club in January, he may struggle to mirror Cornelius’ game time on the road, with Mackay’s somewhat tentative tactics likely to see Cardiff start many away games with one up top and perhaps move to a front pairing later on in matches. Craig Bellamy also offers an option through the middle in a front two but with his pace and tenacity on the flank a key part of Mackay’s 4-5-1 formation, his appeal is somewhat diminished.

Given that Cardiff were hardly prolific last term (72 goals in total, with 37 at home and 35 away), their chief attacking assets seem likely to be kindly priced across the Fantasy games. A cost of around 5.5 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL) for Cornelius looks about right but with just one full season of football under his belt, many will be sceptical as to whether he can mirror last term’s exploits.

The Dane not only possesses the work-rate, power and physique to complement Mackay’s approach, he is also a tricky customer on the ground for someone of his size – with home games against City, Everton and Spurs, in addition to trips to West Ham and Fulham in the first six Gameweeks, though, the opening schedule looks enough to deter any initial suitors. With only an away day at fellow new boys Hull over that spell seeming favourable, Fantasy managers may well be prepared to hold fire and allow Cornelius time to settle before deciding whether he’s worth the investment as a budget third forward for the season ahead.

Morning, how is the betting going? I recall you saying you want to make some bets a while ago?

Some nice odds on promotion from Eng Championship. Blackpool 12/1 and Wigan 4/1. If you can somehow get two of the 3 teams that get's promoted in a multiple bet the odds are excellent.

eg the two of them both being promoted in a multiple gets you 64/1

Domestic transfers you want to happen after the prices list is released?

    My wishlist has:
    1. Jonjo Shelvey (Liverpool to Swansea)
    2. Darren Bent (Villa to Palace/Cardiff/West Brom/Swansea)
    3. Pepe Reina (Liverpool to anywhere else)
    4. Scott Sinclair (Manchester City to Swansea)
    5. Demba Ba (Chelsea to West Brom)

I dunno, depends if Cavani comes or not. Ba was priced pretty high at Newcastle, although they did finish 5th the year before...

Either way I can't see him being less than say 7.5-8m

He is still good value at 7.5, if he maintains his pre-January form. After all, strikers like him are always fixture-proof.

Why not? Shelvey can play the false-nine in a 4-2-3-1, and constantly switch his position with Michu. A tactic which might be effective at Swansea, where target strikers haven't been so successful.

True, but lots of talk of Laudrup being unhappy and there will be lots more football for them to play with Europa.

I can't see Michu having such a great season again. He ran out of steam towards the end of last season.

      Not at all.

5 defenders & 2 'keepers for an average of £4.5m? That will be an awful defence.
All of your attackers, with the exception of Aguero, will cost more than you've put there, imo. That midfield/attack is what you'd expect near the end of the season, once you've built up value. No chance of anything like that from the off.

Lukaku & BA will be 7.5-8 imo, Torres a bit higher.

But the real question is, if Chelsea do get rid of Torres & Ba and manage to get another big striker i.e Cavani, are we still going to gamble with Lukaku in the highly-anticipated CHE DGW1?

Cavani on the wings? 😯 i think he's a pure striker and if he's signed by Mour, definitely to play upfront. Serie A top scorer last season with 29 league goals.

We include the subs and often the 11 come in at around 80 to 90m. We try and pick a few premium players, but feel it would be unrealistic to pick an entire team of luxury picks, even if they may all be the best players. So that means we will try and have budget options across all positions.

Also many teams value is not £100 for much of the season. £110m is the value for many teams of 15 by February time.

Its not an exact science but the principle of making the picks realistic is always there.

We pick an XI that -hopefully- comes within reasonable value of being able to afford some kind of 'filler' around in a true FPL squad.

Otherwise we might just go Chelsea, Chelsea, Chelsea, United, United, United, Arsenal, City, City, Spurs, Hull.

And there's no fun in that.

With the addition of Paulinho, how do you think Spurs will lineup in midfield this season? Is AVB a fan of 4-2-3-1, 4-3-3 or will he change things according to players coming in? A midfield trio of Dembele, Sandro and Paulinho look solid, but surely Holtby, Sig and Dempsey want some gametime too? Lennon and Bale are definite starters last seeason, but what the future holds for Parker, Huddlestone and the uprising Tom Carroll? Only time will tell.

I'd imagine AVB will want a fluid team, so formation won't be a massive factor, it will change as players move up and drop back or as players switch positions.

I agree. When Spurs play at their fluid best, pretty much everyone, including the deep-lying mids and Vert, can score.

Lennon's match-winning goal from Parker's assist in the North London Derby is a clear example. 🙁

AVB's preferred formation is 4-3-3 but it's difficult to see him switching from 4-2-3-1 purely for the security 2 defensive mids bring. His 4 best mids at the moment (Dembele, Paulinho, Sandro, and Holtby) all seem to prefer playing in that deeper role but it's worth nothing that none of them can really play in the attacking midfield spot, so he might consider using a 3 man midfield against the lesser teams to bench as few as possible.

Difficult? I think this lineup is very possible:

        Lloris
        Walker Dawson Vert BAE
        Sandro Paulinho
        Lennon Dembele Bale
        Villa*

That would leave the talent of Holtby, Sig and Dempsey all on the bench.

My argument is, who is the next best option from Spurs after Bale if he's priced out of our budget? Thinking Dembele atm.

Well i was saying that i can't see AVB switching from 4-2-3-1 to 4-3-3 and you listed a 4-2-3-1 formation so i guess we had a bit of a misunderstanding.

Honestly, i don't see Dembele playing as an attacking mid, i think Tottenham don't have an attacking mid that's on the same quality as the rest of their attackers, because Dempsey and Sig arent good enough, and Dembele, Holtby, Sandro, and Paulinho all play better in defensive mid. They don't have quality wingers other than Lennon and Bale either so if he decides to play Bale behind the striker, they'll have an issue on the wing.

As for who might be worth getting, i can't see Sandro, Paulinho, Dembele, or Holtby making points unless they play in the attacking mid spot, so we have to wait for a couple of Spurs friendly games before deciding. Other than Bale, i would only have Villa (if he signs, or whichever other striker as long as he's a starter) or a possible attacking mid signing (they're trying for Mkhitaryan but i don't think they'd get him)

I thought so too but last season he went out and said he prefers to play in a deeper role so he can have a bigger impact on the game (he said this after he was playing in the attacking mid spot, but i dont remember when he said it exactly, i'm only sure that it was while he was at Spurs)

What if Reina doesn't leave Liverpool? Rodgers played Brad Jones several times last year, ahead of a perfectly fit Reina. Does that suggest Mignolet will be first choice, whatever happens?

There still remains interest in Reina, Barca haven't gone away and Arsenal may come in if they fail to get Cesar. There may be interest from Italy as well.

Yeah, I think he probably will leave but was just wondering about it. Rodgers seems not to like Reina so even if they fail to sell him, Migs could be first choice anyway. I certainly don't believe that they paid £8m just to give Reina competition.

Reina has been hopeless the last 2 seasons really, while Migs was one of, if not the best keeper in the PL last season. He should be first choice, although having that competition would be good. I think if Barca come calling he'll be off like a shot.

well reina haven't been top last two seasons but he still compensate with some special reflex saves.
i think migs will not offer more, although he wnt be a downgrade
if the dont recoup the 8mil on reina sale then it is a bad piece of business
and by securing migs already, they ahve put themselves in a very bad position to negotiate

Depends if the buyer perceives that to be an option for you. If they think you absolutely have to sell him to balance the books then they'll push for a low price.

Do it. The majority of people end up using them for a DGW anyway. Do it early any you can reap the benefits of increasing value over the international break and you get another crack at sorting your team out with a clearer picture of managers player/formation preferences. A lot of the questions we wish we knew the answer to preseason will be answered. I wouldn't be surprised if a Dzeko or a little pea became viable alternatives to Aguero/RvP early on.

Aye. Will have a look. I ain't a great numbers person though. Rely on articles to look at potential players. Just reading up on scout articles at the moment.

Pretty much going to back SOT early season i reckon.

I like the Lamps and Hazard picks. Less sure about Mata and I guess it depends on who the striker is. Ballsy move.

Agreed. I fancy Oscar and Lamps to be better value than Mata this season.

People seem to have attatched a stigma to Mata on here, but from what I remember he was one of the best players in the league, on FKs, in the hole, and able to produce steady returns even against top teams.

You're absolutely right. But he's going to be priced accordingly and I don't see him replicating that. Or at least I prefer Hazard's chances. Mata seemed to overachieve a little at times last season and tailed off at the end.

The feeling from the stats is that he was over-producing and was due a 'regression to the mean'. I don't think that regression ever truly materialised.

The other thing is that he may be knackered from the confed cup, as he was from the Olympics last year. Took him until late September to find form after that.

I think i'm going to gamble on Oscar + Hazard.

          http://members.fantasyfootballscout.co.uk/public-stats-tables/view/2715/

Anyone who thinks Hazard is going to explode this season, he is 100/1 to be top goalscorer. Now he's not going to win it but the each way bet is well worth it. Would need 18 goals if last season is anything to go by. Bet Victor if anyone interested.

Did this with Bale last season at 150/1. 500 quid 😎

Certainly not bad...the Bale/Hazard pairing looks likely to be popular and Rat is very underpriced if he starts. Kagawa is my only slight concern as we're not certain where Moyes will deploy him and if he's a certain starter. Ramirez could also be subject to rotation I guess. My tactic is to get a certain 11 starters and then work from there - I also think there is some value in having four defenders based on last season's scoring.
