The Community Round Up

In out latest round up we once again take a look back at the best hot topics of the week and find that clean sheets, rotation and a possible Chelsea double gameweek have pre-occupied the community. We also look at the latest goings on in the community leagues taking place over the summer.

Hottest Topics

Professor Absinthe from the University of the “Deadzone”, which opens between 12am and 8am every day on Fantasy Football Scout, has been busy devising a couple of thesis this week analysing clean sheet data. His first looked at promoted sides defences over the last ten years. His shocking conclusions will give those looking for an uber cheap defence nightmares. His second piece of research looked deeper into clearn sheet statistics to see if it is possible to predict a clean sheet.

A probable Chelsea double gameweek at the start of the season prompted Christina to ask whether it is wise to double up on players in the same position, or to spread the risk across midfield and forward positions.

Looking further ahead Fantasy Football Lout has been analysing post January form to see if we can spot any trends as the season reaches its mid way point.

Meanwhile, Giggs Boson invited the community to gaze into their crystal balls and predict which will be the biggest flops in the up coming season.

Members of the community were also on hand to offer some advice around pre-season friendly analysis. Scroobius Mac and King Nil Miss were among those urging caution should fantasy mangers be tempted to take a punt on the next Danny Graham, who was notorious for failing to live up to his good pre season form last season.

Finally, our resident rotation expert In Tommy We Trust has been taking another look at three way rotation options, but this time shunning the traditional home and away format.

Community Leagues

The FFS UEFA Transfer Window Simulation stage reached the midfielder stage this week and saw Hull City, run by Damo and Kuqi Monster snap up the formidable midfield pairing of Iniesta and Bale. Arsenal, led by Zep, also excelled in the game’s simulated transfer market, with its acquisition of Moutinho and Cazorla. Current leaders are Fulham, under the guidance of PeppieandFelix, who managed to buy Mata and Hazard. Round 4 deadline, in which the teams will be looking to purchase strikers, is 23:59 BST this Saturday. Anyone who would like to join can still sign up here.

Elsewhere Conrad’s Confederation Cup Fantasy Football game came to a dramatic conclusion last weekend, with Conrad himself winning. His captaincy of Fred gave him a commanding score of 246, leaving Patrick Star in second and MB10 in third.

End of Round 3, and Everton still doesn't get a mention in the TWS column, despite being the only team in the top-10 with a 5+ value per token ratio, being ahead of Arsenal throughout the game (who get a mention) and consistent performance to stay in the top-10 from the start of the game.

    Double standards. :/

Looking at the sky game it seems to me like strikers are overpriced. There are a huge amount of passing points available and someone like Arteta could conceivably gain 60+ pts on a striker from his passing alone, that's equivalent to 12 goals. Very few mid-priced strikers will rack up that many goals.

Seems to me like 3-5-2 is the clear way to go.

    Morning all,

Promised some analysis of the Uber using last years stats. I have posted it on the Hot topic for people to find later but here it is now.

    11 CS
    16 n/a
    41 Applicable games
    total 110
    ppg 2.7

    The ppg isn't great but there are a few things to consider here;

    1. The 16 n/a games involve promoted sides who you could argue are the easiest fixtures. The 16 split is 4 homes for Hull (part of the Uber) and 12 games against promoted sides. Using last years promoted side stats, they failed to score 21/57 or 37% of the time. There are 8 home fixtures against promoted sides. Using the percentage number you can say there would be 3 clean sheets. This would give you 28 further points (2point GW for other 5) or 3.5ppg. This would raise the total ppg to 2.8ppg
    2. I haven't included any unpredictable scoring such as goals, assists, BAPS. Can you assume this would add another 0.5 onto the ppg? to gain 0.5 you would need 25 attacking points from the 49 games (2012/13 results + Promoted home games) to raise the figure by 0.5. The ppg would sit at 3.3 ppg at this stage. I also believe that 25 additional points from 49 games is an underestimate but I don't want to mess the figure up to much with unpredictable events.
    3. Of the eight remaining games, 4 are Hull fixtures playing NOR/CAR/WHM/AVL. I can't say anything for Cardiff but WHM were last, Norwich 3rd last and Villa 14th for goals scored on the road. 2 Clean sheets out of 4?
    4. These figures are using last seasons defensive records. We are all predicting an increase in returns for Southampton or Newcastle for example.

Conclusion: Having managed to conservatively estimate a ppg of 3.3 and with positive thinking I believe this could go as high as 3.8 ppg the Uber is something well worth considering. 3.3 ppg last season was the equivalent of Sagna or Shawcross. Both are likely to be priced around 5.5. 3.8ppg and the Uber is equivalent to Vidic, Agger or Azpil.

Don't forget, the other non measurable is the benefits you would get with a bigger budget for your front 8 as this is the whole point of the Uber

    Cheers πŸ™‚

Great stats Tommy. You are so hot and sticky at this time of year. πŸ˜‰

      A bloody Godsend. Cheers.

PS. Key seems to be picking the right Uber defenders with great rotation. Still Probably NOR/WHU/SOT for me, so hoping for 3 x 4.5. *crosses fingers*

Even if the Uber costs 23 or even 23.5, it will all be relative to any other back line as they would have to cost more. I think the Uber will give us 2-3 mil more to spend on the front 8. Should allow us RVP/Bale/Hazard/Aguero

Plenty of posts regarding rotations at the mo....Can't help notice that they alll concentrate on rotating within set positions...so dfenders for defenders...mids for mids etc...But what about rotating formations to accomodate a paticular pair of players within two teams when the only way to do that is to change formation...?....So for example rotating Baines at home with a similar priced Mid at home...Coutinho maybe....Same obviously applies to Mids/forwards or even Def/forwards at the most extreme...Does anybody do any data on that sort of rotation ?

I do that with mids and forwards but the scoring is so different for defenders and attackers/ mids to make it practical most of the time. I guess though it could be useful with out of position players or those rare very attacking defenders like Baines.

The only problem with an attacking defender like Baines is that another rule applies 'never bench, never captain'. I can't see anyone who owns Baines benching him ever. Baines you either have in your first 11 or not at all.

Yeah just giving Baines/Coutinho as an example of two players who rotate at what may be a similar price...same would apply for an cheap defender with a cheap fifth mid....The rotations are usually thought about within set positions rather than by a change of formation and what that might (?) offer...Worth a coat of thinking of maybe...

It is worth considering, but for me, it has to be with cheapies. So an attacker and midfielder who have great home/away and I wouldn't mind benching.

Your example of Baines/Coutinho is fraught with danger and too expensive to rotate. You have both, you play both each week.

FPL Mantra: Baines: Never bench, never captain. πŸ˜‰

I have finished in the top 100 since the sky game started a few years back and thought i would post a little help guide for some of the players i have noticed with potential value in the lower and mid bracket (we all know about the big hitters). Generally it looks alot harder this year to put together a team based around RVP, Bale etc so here are some of the potential 'fillers'.

    Goalkeepers (Low)

Westwood 3.7/ Mannone 4.2 - depending on who is first choice one of these 2 is probably the best cheap option especially with save points now added to the game.

    Goalkeepers (Mid)

Tim Krul 4.7 - top keeper that will get save points and occasional clean sheets, Newcastle have good opening fixtures but remains to be seen if they can perform this season.

Ben Foster 4.8 - Loves a save for the cameras and is a bit of a darling for MOTM for some reason again will get save and cleanies from time to time.

Simon Mingolet 4.9 - the stand out option if he is handed the number 1 spot - cheap way into a good liverpool defense.

Defenders (Low) - very slim pickings here until those guaranteed starters come to light.

Antonio Luna 4.0 - risky as not guaranteed a starter yet but seems the most viable cheap option, Villa have terrible opening fixtures however.

Razvan Rat 4.7 - looks a decent option due to potential attacking returns and cleanies in West Ham's good opening fixtures.

    Defenders (Mid)

Michael Turner 5.2 - if he can stay injury free he is a viable option especially if Norwich continue to get shut outs.

Dejan Lovren 5.2 - good opening fixtures, occasional goal in him and potential bonus points to be had.

Davide Santon 5.4 - good fixtures and good attacking potential.

    Midfielders (Low)

Joe Cole 4.7 - good fixtures was good once upon a time lol?

Charlie Adam 4.9 - new manager new style? When Adam was fit Stoke played ok, he is on free kicks/corners (potentially pens with Walters missing all the time) gets assists and goals, also a bonus points magnet assuming Stoke try to play football. Does like a card or 2 though.

Jonathan De Guzman 5.0 - Terrible opening fixtures but is good for a goal or 2 and is one for getting bonus points.

Midfield (Mid) - lots of potential value here, seems to be a lot more options than in attack or defence.

Mousa Dembele 5.8 - Absolute darling when it comes to bonus points both tackling and passing, just needs to add goals, maybe he can this season with Paulinho and Sandro sitting?

Hatem Ben-Arfa 5.9 - Good fixtures incredible talent and also on pens. Is he just too much of a risk?

Jack WIlshere 6.2 - if he stays fit he was fielded behind the striker taking Cazorla's place, if he adds goals he can be a massive points scorer as he gets bonus points and Sky loves giving him MOTM.

Samir Nasri 6.3 - rotation issues but good price here if he starts

Antonio Valencia 6.4 - incredibly cheap for probably UTD's best winger, just needs to rediscover his form.

Kevin Miralles 6.5 - Massive potential here often played of the striker and with Martinez attacking outlook i think he will play the Malony position.

Yohan Cabaye 6.6 - Bonus points magnet and has a goal in him, he was around 8.4m last season.

Strikers (Low) - very hard market here

Peter Odemwingie 6.8 - if playing can be explosive.

    Strikers (Mid)

Ricky Van-Wolfswinkel 7.5 - bit of an unknown quantity but comes with a reputation

Emanuel Adebayor 7.6 - looks good value if he can play like he did towards the back end of last season assuming Spurs dont sign anybody.

Hope that helps some of the newer players, feel free to ask any questions about the Sky game. Thanks.

I'm not sure about that. He only made 20 or so passes per game last season. When you compare that to the 40-50 or so that the likes of De Guzman, Britton, Schneiderlin etc rack up then I think you're mostly only looking at assist and goal potential for Adam. I think any tackle points he'd get would easily be offset by all the yellows he picks up.

WIth sky though you dont really have the luxury (although you do more so now with 40 transfers) to pick these players as you will have to sub them out at some point, for me coloccini & kaboul are the only real options there and thats IF kaboul is first choice in which case he will be a steal.

I've been looking over the sky game briefly (354 rank last season) and there are seismic changes , in fact it's becoming a cross between fpl and some of the Euro games we've been playing IMO.
Basically there are more points on offer and they seem to have increased the prices of defenders , the rule changes are well detailed in the last article :
Keeper (5) saves points allows us to look at the cheaper options for the first time really ,
40 transfers (from 30) coupled with no monthly allowance gives us more flexibility but also allows us to run out of transfers very early so personal discipline will be essential.
The captain change rule changes essentially reveal that the likes of Bale / Rvp / Suarez will be essential as with tv games on sun/mon you will have the option to change your captain from sat , regardless your first capt pick WILL be playing sat with your backup on standby for Sunday - This mirrors other games but a first here.
The biggest impact for me is all these changes suit the player that puts in the time ie 'the Pros' it is almost impossible now for a casual to win this Huge prize(30k) as more effort is required and a lot more planning and preparing is essential.
For me because of these changes and ultimately the prizes the sky game warrants more attention,
at times I feel people on here dismiss it as casual - but for me not anymore. Ignore it at your peril.

I'm thinking I'll give it a proper go too. I like the captain rule as well, it means you can get some really huge scores as long as you remember to manage your team regularly.
Convinced me to get a membership here as well, knowing the stats looks more important for Sky than FPL.

I can't see it. The Higuain move seems to be solidifying, with quite a lot of talk of him being announced before the weekend. No chance Wenger would spring for both of them.

Scout contrib Andy did that last season...and it did work well as thankfully Suarez came good for him. But the real trick to the no RVP experiment is to know when to hop back aboard.

Andy got him back for Man Utd's double and the end of the season..Smart move.

Worth a go for a while, but to go into a great Man Utd fixture run or double without him will probably not work well.

Yes it is Forca...I went without for the entire year last season and had a cheap attack (Benteke/Lukaku/Mirallas)...I did ok (avg 55 pts per GW) but the problem came down to a reliable capt pick...Do it anyway if you don't want to follow the herd, it's more of a challenge...ditch Bale as well...In fact ditch everybody over 10 mill and live dangerously...

        A couple of reasons mate.

        1. Back Jelavic at the start of the season
        2. Got rid of Michu GW11 for Granero :shock;
        3. Didn't hit a single hat-trick over Christmas
        4. Work commitments meant I missed all the insightful posts here from Jan to March.
        5. Didn't have the TV at the end to match some of the sides in the top 10k

Is there a list anywhere of last season points in the Sky game? Can't find anything on the website. If not, could someone who played in it last year give me a rough feel for what the big hitting defenders, midfielders and strikers scored?

The players who scored well in FPL really, Cazorla was top overall with over 220 i believe.

        GK - Hart, Begovic
        Defenders - Evra, Baines, Zabaleta
        Mid - Bale - Mata - Hazard - Gerrard - Cazorla
        Attack - RVP - Suarez - Benteke

or to be more specific, i'm more interested in the absolute numbers, rather than who was top. Just trying to assess the relative values of each position.

Has anyone looked at which teams rotate well with Liverpool (other than Evertone)

Mignolet (hopefully 5.5) plus a 4/4.5 looks a real option.

If you're going with Mignolet I can't see the point of rotating him with anyone, I'd play him every week and pair him with a 4.0.

    Two German-related issues for Arsenal:

    1) Francis Coquelin will join SC Freiburg on a 12-month loan. Coquelin is already training with the Bundesliga club.

    http://bit.ly/1b9wZYg

    2) Nicklas Bendtner's wage claims are still too high, but Eintracht Frankfurt general manager Bruno Hübner hasn't given up reaching an arrangement with the player. Arsenal and Eintracht have agreed terms for a loan deal with an option to buy at the end.

99% of our departures are bloody loan deals. We just let their contracts run down and let them go for free. Serves us right for giving average players ridiculously high wages.
