Moving Target

Moving Target – Jonjo Shelvey

Michael Laudrup’s summer spending spree continued to pick up pace earlier this week with the acquisition of Jonjo Shelvey from Liverpool for a fee around £5m. The 21-year-old rolls up to the Liberty on a four-year contract and is the fifth player to be snapped up by the Swansea boss over the last few weeks, following the arrival of Jordi Amat, Jose Canas and Alejandro Pozuelo, in addition to Jonathan de Guzman’s return on a further season-long loan deal:

Speaking to the Swans official website upon completion of the deal, Shelvey admitted the club’s style of play, allied with the opportunity of increased game time, were fundamental to his decision to move to the Welsh outfit:

“Leaving a club like Liverpool is a very hard decision to make, but coming to Swansea, who play similar football which Brendan (Rodgers) and managers before him installed here, is an attraction. Brendan said he wouldn’t let me go to a club that wasn’t right for me. He said Swansea are perfect for me with the way I play. Rather than sit on the bench every week at Liverpool, I need to come and play football and get myself to the status that I once had. Moving here will help me in terms of the way the manager wants to play. Obviously having worked under Brendan that will stand me in good stead.”

The History

A product of the Arsenal and West Ham youth academies, Shelvey was picked up by Charlton as a youngster back in 2007. Having scored 14 times in 23 appearances for the Under 18s in 2007/08, he was promoted to the senior side the following year and, after becoming the club’s youngest ever first-team player, went on to produce seven goals and five assists from 42 games in the Championship.

Signed by Liverpool in May 2010, Shelvey managed just a single assist from 15 appearances in his debut campaign on Merseyside. Farmed out to Championship side Blackpool the following year, the midfielder made an immediate impact, producing six goals and three assists in just 10 matches before he was recalled to Merseyside as a result of injuries to the likes of Lucas and Steven Gerrard. Back at Anfield, he again failed to produce the goods – notching just once in 13 matches over the remainder of the season.

In Brendan Rodgers’ first term in charge, Shelvey made nine starts and 10 appearances off the bench but was unable to make any real impression, mustering a single strike in the league last time round. Ironically, he was far more prolific in the Europa League for the Reds last season, notching four times in nine matches. On the international stage, Shelvey has represented England at every level from Under 16 to Under 21, scoring 10 times in 29 appearances, and has also turned out for the senior side once, climbing off the bench to feature against San Marino in October last year.

The Prospects

In the main, Shelvey’s move to Swansea has been greeted with a large degree of scepticism, though reports indicate Michael Laudrup was keen to push the move through.

Although Shelvey is versatile enough to play in a deeper, central position in addition to the role in “the hole”, there’s no doubt he has real competition to nail down a regular spot under Laudrup. The likes of Leon Britton, Ki Sung-Yeung, de Guzman and Canas could vie for the “double pivot” positions in Laudrup’s preferred 4-2-3-1, while Pozuelo, de Guzman, Pablo Hernandez and Wayne Routledge all offer alternatives to Michu as the most advanced midfielder behind a lone forward.

There’s an argument that Shelvey’s more physical approach may help his game time if the Swans boss is looking for a little extra steel in front of the back-four, though from a Fantasy perspective, such a scenario hardly boosts his appeal. Further up the field, he’s only likely to get a chance if Michu is either rested or pushed into a forward role, though with the Welsh club linked with moves for Bafetimbi Gomis or Wilfried Bony, the Spaniard may see less time up front next time round.

With Laudrup keen to strengthen his squad as Swansea prepare for the defence of the Capital One Cup and Europa League duties, rest and rotation could well blight the vast majority of their squad. While Shelvey seems optimistic that the move will boost his minutes, it’s difficult to see how he will go about cementing a regular role. Although he’s likely to come in as a mid-price midfield option across the Fantasy games, then, (around 5.5 to 6.0 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL) is anticipated) it may take injuries and suspension to others to boost his prospects as a regular for the season ahead. With United, Spurs, Liverpool and Arsenal in the first six Gameweeks, even Michu may struggle to persuade early investors to jump on board – Fantasy managers will likely start the season steering well clear of Shelvey, only reassessing the situation if Laudrup decides he deserves more than just bench-warming duties.

Any reason why I can't reply to AB's post above, or up or down vote it? Re Murray and FPL, think he follows the Scout account on twitter aswell, if I'm not mistaken.

I know we have 7 weeks of transfers to go, but I'm bored out of my mind, so I thought I'd have a go at predicting the Starting Defences of all the teams who might offer a 4.5 option. Players that will be started sporadically or could prove me wrong are in brackets. (GK,RB,CB,CB,LB)

Stoke City: Begovic, Cameron, Huth, Shawcross, Pieters (Muniesa, Wilson)

West Ham: Jussi, Rat, Collins, Reid, O'Brien (Demel, Tomkins)

Cardiff: Marshall, Connolly, Hudson, Turner, Taylor (McNaughton)

Crystal Palace: Speroni, Ward, Ramage, Delaney, Parr (Moxey)

Sunderland: Westwood/Mannone, Gardner, Cuellar, O'Shea/Diakité, Bardsley(?)

Fulham: Stekelenburg, Reither, Hangeland, Hughes/Amorebieta, Riise

WBA: Foster, B.Jones(?), Olsson, McAuley, Ridgewell

Norwich: Ruddy, Martin, Turner, Bassong, Garrido (Bennett, Whittaker)

Newcastle: Krul, Debuchy, Collocini, Taylor, Santon (Williamson, Yanga-Mbiwa)

Swansea: Vorm, Rangel, Chico/Amat, A.Williams, Davies (Tiendalli, Monk)

Southampton: Boruc, Clyne, Yoshida/Hooiveld, Lovren, Shaw (José Fonte, Fox)

Aston Villa: Guzan, Lowton, Vlaar, Clark, Luna [Baker to play if playing 352/532] (Baker, Lichaj,
    Bennett)

Hull City usually play 352/532 (Let's be honest, it's the same formation; depending on whether
you're trying to score/hold a lead). Brady and Elmohammady play LWB/LM + RWB/RM respectively and would be very tempting if they came in as defenders.
McShane, Abdoulaye Faye, James Hobbs + Jack Hobbs can all play Centre-Back, along with new signings Curtis Davies & Maynor Figueroa.
Anyone who is a fan or even watches Hull can hopefully help me out with that one.

Corrections? I know I've gone wrong at least about half a dozen times 🙂

Hi all, first time back after last season. Home crowd looks great.

Been looking back through posts and really liking the uber defence idea. ITWT's suggested teams surely won't come in at 5.0, 4.5, 4.5, 4.5, 4.0 will they though? Can't imagine only one of Norwich, WBA and Newcastle being 5.0 (expect them all to be 5.0 minimum).

If they do however, could quite possibly swap in Coleman (if 5.0) for Norwich and get a slightly stronger rotation. Also gives the option of using him as pseudo heavy hitter for a few weeks in if rotation goes to pot.

    Roll on the price list!

My FPL thoughts for the coming season, part 1.

    Arsenal.

At the back: 14 clean sheets last season and I expect more of the same this season. Koscielny and Mertesacker are the likely centre-back pairing and should come in at £5.5m each, which may be worth it if Vermaelen remains on the bench. Monreal and Gibbs will continue to rotate at Left-Back so i'd avoid both. Hopefully Jenkinson will make the Right-Back spot his this season as Sagna continues to age. Szczesny could be decent value if he cements his spot and comes in at £5.5m, especially given the Gunners' favourable fixtures to begin with.

Up Top: The imminent arrival of Gonzalo Higuain from Real Madrid will bolster the attraction in the Arsenal attack, particularly if he is priced generously. Santi Cazorla's fantasy value could take a hit if Wilshere continues to play in the hole, meaning the Spaniard lacks freedom to express his creativity and will be pushed wide to the left along with the likely price increase to £10.0m. Walcott will remain on the right but won't offer the value of last season, especially given that he will be limited to his spot on the Right, and won't be put up top.

    Villa:

At the back: I doubt the side will have much to offer fantasy wise this season, but should Villa begin to rack up the clean sheets i'll side with Matthew Lowton, who may also offer attacking returns. Guzan is always an option with his save points.

Up Top: The key man here is Benteke, if he remains at Villa park he'll be pivotal to Villa's attack and could still be value, even if he is priced at around £9.0m, after picking up 19 goals in his debut Premier League season. Otherwise Tonev could be decent value if he plays behind the Belgian.

    Cardiff:

At the back: The Welsh outfit could be decent value this season, especially given their excellent record at home last season. Right-Back Connolly scoring five and Centre-Half Mark Hudson picking up 4 in the league. Hopefully Marshall will be a £4.0m Keeper, something we didn't have last season.

Up Top: Cardiff weren't exactly prolific up top last season with Helguson, Whittingham and Gunnarsson tied top scorers with 8 in the league, January arrival Fraizer Campbell notched
7 in his 12 league appearances. The big question for me is whether Denmark international Andreas Cornelius can convert his impressive Copenhagen record(18 goals in 32 appearances) to Premier League goals, and may be a fantasy option at £6.0m.

    Chelsea:

At the back: With Mourinho's arrival I expect the Blues to shore up at the back. Azpilicueta will offer decent value if he nails down that Right-back spot under the new boss at around £6.0m as Ivanovic, Luiz and Cole are likely to come in around the £6.5/£7.0m. Cech could also be decent value at £6.0m after Xmas, when many can afford to splash the cash on a big keeper.

Up Top: Many have been talking up Eden Hazard, who scored 9 goals and picked up 16 assists in his debut season. Much more is expected of his this term, and he's likely to come in at £10.0m. The same with Mata, who outscored the Belgian by 22 points but the Spaniard is likely to receive a price hike to £10.5m. Oscar could be an excellent option if he nails down his spot at £8.0m. The striker spot is where it gets interesting. If the side do sign Cavani, which gets less likely every day, then he'll be a good option at £11m, otherwise, if he doesn't get loaned elsewhere, Lukaku could be a cut-price fantasy option in the Blues' attack, after an impressive 17 goals on loan at the Hawthorns.

    Palace:

At the back: Likely to leak goals throughout the season, avoid.

Up top: If Murray regains fitness he could become a bargain at £6.0m, otherwise I can't see much interest in the Palace attack.

    Everton:

At the back: If Baines stays he will remain a fantasy luxury, with set-pieces and attacking potential in his locker the only real issue will be his price, likely to be in excess of £7.0m. Seamus Coleman may offer much better value if he comes in at around £5.0m, after picking up attacking points from Right-Back last season. However the main downfall is the lack of clean sheet potential that is brought with the appointment of Robert Martinez.

Up Top: The main man i'm looking at is Kevin Mirallas, especially if he is classified as a midfielder. The Belgian impressed during the second half of the season and will certainly be an option if he comes in at around the £7.5m mark for me, and faces the possibility of playing OOP in Martinez' 3-5-2. Last seasons fantasy favourite Fellaini is likely to be pushed deep, and therefore suffer in fantasy terms. However a rejuvenated Jelavic could be a cut-price option after his poor performance last season, with him scoring only 7 goals last season, 2 less than the number he scored when he joined last January.

    Fulham:

At the back: With the signings of Amorebieta and Stekelenburg I expect the London side to improve on last seasons 8 clean sheets. Reither could be good value if he keeps delivering attacking points, however he's likely to come in around £1.0m/£0.5m more than his teammates.

Up top: Fantasy favourite Dimitar Berbatov will be pinnacle to Fulham's season once again and is likely to offer less value at around £8.0m. However the ones to watch this season are Kacaniklic and Dejagah, who could both offer excellent value at around £5.0m should they nail down their spots on the wing.

    Hull:

At the back: Steve Bruce's side should increase their defensive stability this season and Elmo could offer some value with his attacking returns from the back.

Up top: Robert Koren could be a bargain next season if he remains in the hole in a 3-5-2, then again so could winger Robert Brady, but for me it's a wait and see, especially if they sign a striker.

    Liverpool:

At the back: Liverpool were solid at the back last season, however they tend to be priced heavily at £6.0m, unless Mignolet comes in at £5.0m/£5.5m or Liverpool sign another centre-half i'm likely to steer clear, despite their excellent fixtures.

Up top: This could be where the value lies this season. With the likely departure of Suarez this could open the gate for a fantasy gem. If Coutinho continues where he left off he could be an excellent choice at around £8.0m. Luis Alberto and Aspas could be great options if they get decent runs in the side, however rotation could be an issue this year at Liverpool.

    Feel free to discuss.

      Great read Parm

Though I think you overlooked Ruiz, who could be worth considering if he gets classed as a mid this season.

If Brady continues at lb, i don't he's worth it.

Towards the back end of the season I think Brady was utilised on the left hand side in a 3-4-2-1. Ruiz isn't an option unless he is a midfielder, for me anyway.

Appreciate the effort Parmtree. It will be interesting to see if Marshall comes in at 4m. Might be tempted at a cheap rotation if he is.

Only really some brief notes, more questions will be answered when the prices come out and transfers happen, then we'll have a much better clue as to who the real options are.

    Good Evening Lads,

So, Murray won, West Ham battered Cork, a German won a race whilst a cameraman was hit by a wheel. After all the excitement today it seems that a slight break may be needed. So after yesterday's return to picture posts, here is the latest installment.

Henrik Mkhitaryan may sign for Borussia Dortmund in time tomorrow's benefit match against 1.FC Magdeburg, claims Der Westen. He's arriving in Westfalia today to sort out his last contractual details.

    http://bit.ly/13uIrNz

Klopp's statement in an interview today that Lewandowski will sign for Bayern for the 2014-15 season needs to be taken with a pinch of salt. The aim of the comments was to state that Dortmund are not prepared to see him move in this transfer break.

Great stats for Henry. 25 goals, 15 assists after only 32 gameweeks that season 😯 And it looks like it was only 1 bonus point per game those days. He had only 8 bonus points and never more than 1 per game.

One of Boro's brightest prospects, England Under-18 international Downing was handed his Premiership debut against Ipswich in April 2002. The left-sided midfielder made his home bow against Chelsea three days later. Opened his Boro goalscoring account last season in a League Cup clash at Brentford. Made his England debut in a friendly against Holland in February 2005.
