Scout Report – Dwight Gayle

Ian Holloway’s search for a new striker saw the Crystal Palace boss snap up Dwight Gayle from Peterborough United for a club record fee of £4.5m last week. The 22-year-old arrives at Selhurst Park on a four-year deal and is the second player to bolster the Palace ranks this summer, following the acquisition of Stephen Dobbie from Brighton.

One of 12 managers reportedly chasing Gayle’s signature, Holloway lavished praise upon the new boy after securing the deal, indicating he’s likely to be a key figure for the season ahead:

“He’s got an opportunity now to go and enjoy his football and I think he’ll score goals at Premier League level, goals from certain people just keep happening, it doesn’t matter which level you start at, they just keep happening. I think the way he plays, the boy moves like a top player. It’s now about helping him deal with the top level against top defenders. My chairman went in with a brief – don’t come out of the room without getting him – and I’m thankful. He’s given us a goalscorer of the future in our team right now, which is priceless.”

The History

A product of the Arsenal youth academy, Gayle was released by the Gunners as a teenager and picked up by non-league outfit Stansted in 2009. Having scored 59 times for the club during 2010/11, the forward was then acquired by Dagenham and Redbridge but was farmed out on loan to Bishops Stortford, where his eye for goal came to the fore once more, with 42 strikes in a year.

Returning to Dagenham in August 2012, Gayle registered seven goals in 18 appearances before Peterborough acquired him on loan in November last year. The club then signed him on a permanent deal a couple of months later for a fee of around £500,000 but despite producing 13 goals and six assists in 29 appearances, Gayle was unable to prevent The Posh from slipping out of the Championship into League One.

The Prospects

With last season’s top scorer Glenn Murray potentially out for the season after sustaining cruciate knee ligament damage in the Championship semi-final play-off against former club Brighton, Gayle’s prospects of game time certainly look good, judging by his new manager’s comments.

Having featured in non-league football a mere 12 months ago, the Palace new boy is keenly aware of his turnaround in fortunes and is desperate to vindicate Holloway’s decision to hand him a top-flight chance:

“He’s a good manager and for him to point out my talent and my ability is a good feeling. I just hope I can repay him with goals for the club and help them stay in the Premier League. He’s built a very attacking side, which is what you need really…The chance came and I had to grab it because I might not get another chance. To be playing in the Premier League from where I’ve come from is a big achievement really. I’m just really looking forward to it and hopefully I can take the opportunity with both hands and do well.”

Towards the end of last term, Holloway utilised a 4-2-3-1 formation, only opting for a couple of forwards up top when looking to inject a little extra attacking edge to his team’s play. Likely to be handed the lone role up top, Gayle has the fleet of foot and finishing skills to complement Holloway’s tactics, allowing Palace to sit deep and break quickly on the counter – in addition, his speed and work rate will also be essential in maintaining the high pressing game required.

With spot-kicks also expected to be part of his armoury in light of Murray’s injury, Gayle may well be targeted by Fantasy managers eyeing up a cheap third forward – granted, question marks remain over his ability to produce at the highest level but promoted forwards such as Grant Holt and Rickie Lambert have more than atoned for a lack of Premier League experience over the last couple of campaigns.

A price of around 5.5 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL) is anticipated and with home games against Sunderland, Swansea and Fulham in the opening eight Gameweeks, Gayle has the platform to pick up the points at Selhurst Park. With Holloway confirming he has no plans to bring Wilfried Zaha on loan from Man United, Palace enter this season without their two star men from the previous campaign – Gayle’s contribution looks more crucial than ever if his new club are to prove the doubters wrong and avoid the drop.

Probably. Plenty Championship strikers fail to get enough goals in the PL and I can't see this guy being any different.

Ha. Exactly. The reason I asked it as because from time to time posters say things like a poor gameweek has genuinely ruined their weekend, or they've even considered quitting as it was affecting their mood so much. I must admit in my first season I fell foul of that a little, but can now take the rough with the smooth in the game. I was quite surprised how much a good or bad week did affect my mood at first.

My brother (Alan Hansen on FFS) has quit FPL this season as it was affecting his mental state, He and I are very competitive and he said that I was like Mozart and he was like Salieri. He's thrown in the towel forever now for his own good as it was making him grumpy and whatever conversation we'd be having we would always somehow end up coming back to FPL, things were just getting brutal!, I've never seen anything like it, his transfers were hilarious, the most unluckiest player I've ever seen! 😀

Very unhealthy IMO and slowly becoming the death of conversation.
We all need to learn how to handle social media better and not let it take over ,

Without doubt it does. I find myself following the Prem, not as a neutral, able to enjoy every game on SKY, but more a rampant armchair manager hell bent on sorting out every failing of every club. Also shouting out that was an assist to player X even though it hit every defender on the way to the player Y when there are people just trying to watch the game. 🙂

Hehe...I try to hide the fact that my mood is affected. I feel somewhat ashamed but there's no doubt that I'm far more attentive and obliging after a decent points haul, with the opposite true after a frustrating Fantasy afternoon.

If I let on that my mood was swung so much by it, in addition to the time sink that running the site gives me, then I'm pretty sure I'd be out on my ear.

Ha...great topic. I like to think of it as just a "hobby". However as the years go on I realise that it is no longer a hobby and is now an obsession. In terms of impact I would have to say on the whole it is positive. I love the banter with my work mates in our mini leagues and i have even managed to get my mother and wife to play the game! Yes, there are terrible lows where you curse the second transfer you didn't need to make, but the highs come soon after. Viva FF!

Yes it does affect my mood, I think about FF way too much and have even turned down going for beers (all be it not great friends) to make my decisions on a Friday night. I have also turned down business to allow me to see teamsheets etc haha.

Ps Beers with good mates over FF, I'd rather pissed up transfers.

I spend far too much time playing it, especially after the GW starts, when affectively I have no control over how my team performs.

Each year I proclaim to spend less time, care less about the outcome, and gain perspective.

Getting better I think, but I do enjoy it, it doesn't cost me anything (except time..) and it keeps the whole league interesting to watch.

Embarrassingly, I have been known to snap at my 3 year old after a captain flop. Even made her cry when I turned off Peppa Pig to check score update ( Only for a minute)

Came within an inch of getting physically sick on final day of season when bonus points confirmed I blew a 35pt ML lead.

Although it does affect my mood a little (I'd be lying if I said it didn't), I'd say that a combination of my obsessive nature and FPL's addictiveness is a bad combination and I've had heated discussions with my significant other over the amount of time I spent in front of the screen, particularly during matchdays.

I have also been accused of being (mentally) "absent" between Friday and Monday.

I've promised both myself and her that I'd limit my time on it this season so I have to decide whether it's more important to watch football (which often clashes with weekend plans) or invest time thinking about/discussing FPL stuff!

I've reached a decent compromise I think, I watch most of the live games but tend to MOTD challenge the 3 o' clocks. It does mean having to have very sharp reactions - fingers in the ears, "na na naaa I'm not listening" with the voice, turning the channel over on the remote with your elbows, fine when you're at home - slightly embarassing when you aren't. My significant other still professes to find it adorable, in a ruffle-your-hair, pitying kind of way.

    Hey there everyone!

I am trying to get a head start on making my fpl team and wanted to know if this team is expected to be under the $100 million maximum and/or if it needs some changes. Thanks in advance!

    Ruddy, Boruc
    Rat, McShane, Baines, Jenkinson, Clyne
Bale, Oscar, Kagawa, Mirallas (hopefully as a mid), Coutinho
    RVW, Benteke, Kone

      My guess

      5 - 4.5

      4.5 - 4 - 7.5 - 5 - 4.5

      12 - 8 - 8.5 - 8 - 8.5

      6.5 - 9 - 7.5

      103 🙁

A new signing for a stable prem club that paid 8.5 mil for him. We'll be lucky if he comes in at 6. Kone was priced at 6.5 last season for example from memory.

Drop one of the mids to someone around 5m. You will have to bench one of your front 8 every week so it makes sense

More balance in your attacking areas. Remember you have to bench at least one of them every week and at the moment that will be a 6.5 mil player. Wait for the game and try and find this years Puncheon, Maloney, Sterling etc.

You also need a big hitter up front so you have a position you can easily interchange between Kun/RVP/Suarez/Higuain/Cavani etc

Atm it should be under 100m.

1.Forwards too light,at least one big hitter required.
2.Oscar and Jenkinson are rotation risks,so don't have them.
3.Going with that front 8,it could really be tough to bench someone and so you might end up being disappointed very often cause the player you benched scored big,so get a cheapie.
4.Doubling up on the Southampton defense could prove risky.

As McNulty often points out. Downing got 0 assists when Carroll was at Liverpool and Jarvis got no assists last year when Carroll was at West Ham. Carroll is the anti-assist player.

In Greek I like to call Carroll a peice of "Kreas" which is meat. Whoever was responsible for identifying him as a possible replacement for torres and suggesting a fee of 35m pound must of been smoking some serious drugs.

Should clarify he's the anti-crosser- assister. If Joey cracked it then maybe big sam should recruit him. Were Barton's assists for Carroll through balls? That may explain it.

I seem to recall plenty of Barton's assists to Carroll were from crosses, corners or long balls.

Nolan's too. That's probably where it's wrong to pick out Jarvis and Downing, since they are wide men, whereas Carroll seemed to have more success with supply from the likes of Barton and Nolan who played more in the middle.

So you probably have a point to a certain extent, but often the difference between a cross and a long ball is only where the ball originates from.

I agree that Dwight Gayle comes across as an incredibly underwhelming transfer for Ian Holloway. He seems like a squad filler at best for a premier league team. I really can't see him doing much at all, Crystal Palace need a serious striker.

Was always going to happen. With the golden era of the 90s and 00s the young players coming through never had a chance in the national team as they couldn't get ahead of the established players – for a very good reason. T20 etc hasn't helped either. None of the players coming through are well suited to playing test matches.

Mind you the coaching and selection has been truly awful for years now.

Finn over Bresnan all day. We don't need his batting. Save the all-round stuff for ODI's

I would go with Finn. Bresnan could be tame on a flat deck. We don't need his batting with Prior coming in @ 7

5 in England, then 5 in Oz - 10 tests in quick succession.

        I reckon 6-2 to England.

Nah, strictly speaking it's 2 separate series of 5 tests each.

But they come so close to each other that effectively it's a 10-match series played home and away.

Honestly GJ is probably as good or better option to Sagna/Jenks, and JE isn't appreciably worse than Gibbs, Agger and Reina or Mignolet would probably have a shout too.

Further forward, I definitely wouldn't say Liverpool's midfield are better than Arsenal's but this is a strong area for Arsenal. You could maybe make a case that Lucas would slot into the Arteta position but otherwise Gerrard is the only player that would make it into the first XI.

Up front Suarez certainly, Sturridge would be on the bench.

Spurs probably don't need GJ or a keeper but might take Coutinho. Not sure he's better than Dembele though and Gerrard isn't better than Bale. Sure they'd take both Liverpool strikers though.

Arsenal: Reina, Migs, Johnson, Agger, Enrique, Gerrard, Coutinho, Suarez,

I actually quite like Liverpool as a club, I am not having a dig. My point is most Pool fans are in dream land about the quality of their players.... They frankly have not performed the past 3 years and I am afraid to say have very little chance of breaking into the top 5 never mind 4

I don't think most Pool fans are in dreamland honestly at least not ones I speak to. 5th or 6th next season would be a good result as far as I'm concerned although with three of the top clubs appointing new managers it's far from easy to predict next season.

Fair enough, however in hindsight if you look back we actually performed relatively well against the top clubs despite not racking up many wins. Look at the arsenal away game when we were up 2-0, both city games we deserved 2 win however silly errors cost us and also man utd at home we deserved 2 win but some controversial decisions went against us. I understand and accept the fact that our performances have been well below what a club likes us should be finishing however we are a work in progress.

Arsenal: Reina/Mignolet, Johnson, Agger, Gerrard, Suarez, Coutinho, Sturridge.

I reckon a front three of Suarez, Sturridge, Coutinho is better than Podolski, Giroud, Walcott. I like Walcott a lot, but as a group I'd definitely take Liverpool's front 3.

Spurs: Enrique, Agger, Gerrard, Suarez, Coutinho, Sturridge

Well, Lloris vs Mignolet and Johnson vs Walker seem a bit too close to call, Walker had a poor season last time out. Suarez and Sturridge in there over Ade/Defoe and Lennon, Coutinho I'd say is better than Holtby/Sogurdsson/Dempsey, but are any of those 3 first choice any more?

How many of you are thinking RVP/Aguero and 2 cheapies up front?

I am definitely going to have 2 10m + forwards. No idea who yet though. I'd like Higuain and Kun but not sure how likely the Higuain move is now

Don't know what cheapie options there will be. Wouldn't mind RVP/Aguero with Lambert and a newbie price permitting.

Strong reports yesterday from Italian media that Chelsea are close to a deal for Roma's De Rossi.
😀 what a great signing if that happen
