Moving Target

Moving Target – Arouna Kone

Roberto Martinez made his first foray into the transfer market as manager of Everton by returning to former club Wigan to acquire the services of Arouna Kone. The Toffees beat off late interest from Newcastle for the 29-year-old, who rolls up to Goodison on a three-year deal which is believed to have cost the club £5m.

Speaking to the club’s official website upon completion of the deal, the Ivorian is determined to get amongst the goals for the Merseysiders as Martinez attempts to improve upon last term’s sixth place finish under David Moyes:

“I have faith in my own ability but I hope that everything goes smoothly and that I can also steer clear of injuries. I think that with the quality of squad Everton has, we will have a good season. I hope to score as many goals as I can next season. Playing for Everton is moving to another level, a slightly higher standard compared to Wigan and so I hope to be on my best form. I really believe in this team and I think we will have a great campaign next season and I can’t wait to make my debut for this club.”

The History

Kone’s career began as a 17-year-old back in his native Ivory Coast, where he notched 17 times in 30 appearances for Rio Sport before Belgian outfit Lierse came calling in 2002. Having racked up 11 strikes in 32 games, he made his way to Holland to turn out for Roda JC. This time round, he lasted a couple of campaigns, notching 26 goals and 14 assists in just 61 matches before catching the eye of Dutch giants PSV.

Kone’s first two years in Eindhoven brought 19 goals and 13 assists from 52 appearances but with injury and illness restricting his game time, he was sold to Spanish club Sevilla in the summer of 2007. Despite shelling out €12m for his services, a combination of injuries, lack of form and training ground rows forced Kone out of favour at Sevilla – a mere goal and assist from 29 appearances over two-and-a-half-years sums up his lack of impact.

Loaned out to German club Hannover 96 midway through the 2009/10, Kone found the net twice in eight matches before returning to his parent club for the start of the next campaign. After featuring once in 2010/11, Kone was loaned out to Levante for the remainder of the season and, with 15 goals and four assists in 34 matches, proved a key player as the minnows clinched a sixth place finish in La Liga.

Signed by Martinez for Wigan last summer, Kone’s impact was instant at the DW – from 34 appearances, he registered 11 goals and five assists, playing a part in 16 of the Latics’ 47 strikes over the season. He has also been selected for the national side on 27 occasions, scoring once and providing a pair of assists.

The Prospects

Much may come down to Martinez’s preferred system of choice in his first season on Merseyside. The Toffees are so familiar with the 4-4-1-1 utilised by David Moyes in recent time but many expect the new man in charge to roll out his preferred 3-4-3 formation as he looks to go introduce a more attacking brand of football. Kone’s versatility means he could fill in on the right of a 3-4-3, which may see him vie with Kevin Mirallas for game time or, more likely, through the centre as a replacement for the misfiring Nikica Jelavic.

A 3-4-3 formation, with Mirallas on the right and Kone central, would likely see many Fantasy managers opt for the Belgian, however, if he’s classified as a midfielder in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) game. Alternatively, if Mirallas is listed as a forward, Kone’s appeal looks set to rise considerably – given that Jelavic notched just seven times last term, the Ivorian certainly looks in the driving seat to take up the lone forward role. On the other hand, while Mirallas has the potential to be an out of position option, a repeat of last term’s scenario, where he was classified as a forward yet fielded on the right of a 4-4-1-1, would strike the Belgian off many a Fantasy Watchlist.

Judging by Martinez’s praise, Jelavic certainly has reason to be worried over his game time in the season ahead. In an interview with the Toffees website, the Spaniard spoke highly of the new boy’s capabilities – an indication, perhaps, that he’s set to be fielded centrally for the Toffees next time round.

“He’s got everything that an Evertonian would expect of a striker. The work ethic, the technical ability to score goals – that’s always essential in a striker. But probably the biggest strength that Arouna has is that calmness in front of goal, that composure to be a real reference for the team. His arrival to the Premier League has been a very successful and impressive one. To be able to be himself straight away, someone who copes with the physicality of the game but brings a really strong back-to-goal play in the forward position and with real quality finishing in his make-up. As a player I would say he is a complete footballer at a really good age.”

A price of around 7.0 or 7.5 would bring the former Wigan man into consideration as we construct our pre-season line-ups, while the fixtures also fall in Kone’s favour. With West Brom, Newcastle and Hull all visiting Goodison by Gameweek 9, in addition to trips to Norwich, Cardiff and Villa, the schedule affords Martinez the chance to get off to a successful start. With the likes of Leighton Baines, Seamus Coleman, Steven Pienaar and Mirallas supplying a stream of opportunities from the flanks, Kone could well push on from last term’s tally at the DW to become a key protagonist for the Toffees in the post-Moyes era.

Yep, City attacking cover is hard to ignore. No way we can own RVP + Kun. If playmaker Silva can replicate his 2011/2012 from, then he's nailed on. Consider Yaya if he's going to play slightly upfront with Fernandinho alongside him, and Jesus Navas if he's showing some form pre season.

I think this should be decided by going to a swimming pool and jumping off the board... Whoever gets the better dive score wins...

On a serious note Bale would easily be the better buy, Suarez brings nothing but trouble with him wherever he goes....

  25. Why Michu should be overlooked.
    JJC
    • 13 Years
    10 years, 9 months ago

Good Morning everyone. I've had some thoughts regarding possible picks for mid to high price forwards in the upcoming season, and why I think Michu should be overlooked.

Swansea and their prolific forward Michu surpassed all expectations with a season that culminated in a cup final win for the club, while the clubs new boy gave Van Persie a run for his money in the chase for the golden boot. Despite all this, there is much to be cautious about when assessing both Swansea and Michu for fantasy appeal.

Despite an impressive season for the club, Swansea were far from efficient in front of goal. Out of the 345 attempts on goal last season, just 47 resulted in goals, giving the club a shots to goal ratio of 13.6% and making the club the 4th least accurate club in the premier league.

As a forward himself, Michu's statistics offer cause for optimism. 18 out of Michu's 110 attempts found the net last season, granting the forward a shots-to-goals ratio of 16.4%. However just 34 of these attempts were on target, which is worryingly low for such a prolific striker.

Although Laudrup has moved to solve the clubs attacking issues by looking to bring Wilfried Bony to the club, this could hamper Michu's prospects, with his arrival potentially reducing Michu's opportunities in front of goal.

Ultimately, much of Michu's fantasy appeal in the 2012/13 season lay in his selection as a midfielder by fantasy games. Next season he will not be afforded such luxuries and will his appeal dented by a price hike and a fantasy reclassification. Statistically, the other strikers likely to be in Michu's price bracket offer more than enough to oust the Spaniard from teams, with many eye-catching forwards challenging him:

    Berbatov 15 goals from 81 attempts (18.5%)
    Benteke 19 goals from 104 attempts (18.3%)
    Lukaku 17 goals from 99 attempts (17.2%)
    Michu 18 goals from 110 attempts (16.4%)
    Sturridge 10 goals from 61 attempts (16.4%)
    Lambert 15 goals from 94 attempts (16%)

With the highest shots-to-goals ratio of the 6 forwards, Dimitar Berbatov's appeal is clear. His role as Fulham's primary goalscorer is unlikely to be challenged in the forthcoming season, and his allure is further boosted by an attack that shows a lot of promise now players have had time to settle.

Last season's fantasy bargain is another attractive option for manager's front 3. Christian Benteke showed all the signs of being a fantasy juggernaut last season, and he certainly has the statistics to prove it. With the player handing in a transfer request this week, a move to one of the premier leagues bigger clubs seems likely, with the likes of Tottenham, Chelsea and Liverpool rumoured to be courting the forward. A move to any of these clubs would see his fantasy stock rise further, with the Belgian likely to be afforded a lot more opportunities in front of goal.

Another Belgian could be attracting our attention once more if he is afforded regular first team football. With Romelu Lukaku's ability in front of goal, a run in the offensively formidable Chelsea side would make Lukaku a must have for Chelsea managers. Another loan spell for the Belgian seems unlikely this season, so managers will have to wait and see what Mourinho has in store for him.

With Luis Suarez's position in the Liverpool side far from assured following a lengthy ban and a plethora of transfer rumours surrounding him, Daniel Sturridge could be Liverpool's primary goal scorer for the upcoming season. Suarez's absence at the end of last season allowed Sturridge to show that he was more than capable of leading the line, with a number of big performances showing the player to be a late fantasy force. With Aspas likely to play behind Sturridge, a Liverpool without Suarez could certainly work in Sturridge's favour from a fantasy perspective.

While not as explosive as Michu, Rickie Lambert could offer a consistent reliable mid bracket option for fantasy managers. With spot kicks and set pieces nailed on, Lambert will continue to be a major threat and a bonus point darling. However after a season that resulted in him becoming the third highest scoring forward, a substantial price hike is expected, and it remains to be seen if he can offer value in the forthcoming season.

While my analysis has by no means been exhaustive whatsoever, I hope some people have found this to be of some use. Personally I may pick Berbatov myself, he could be a good early season differential.

    Who is everyone else considering?

      Good post.

I think I'm going to go with Sturridge if I choose not to go with Coutinho. I do like Liverpool's opening fixtures and I wouold definitely have one of them in the team. Benteke's prospects depend on which club he goes to. If it's Chelsea and Lukaku isn't loaned out, I would stay away. If he goes to Spurs instead, I might get him, but then again I wouldn't double up on any side in the start of the season and I'm sure I can't leave Bale out. Staying away from Michu surely, at least for the start of the season. And I think Lambert would be too highly priced.

I agree totally. The 2nd striker in most peoples teams will be the least nailed down choice in most peoples teams I expect. Most of last seasons big performers in that bracket have a lot of question marks over them right now.

If Lambert produces at last seasons pace and is priced at, say, £7.5-8m he's still good value for money though.

You know where you are with Lambert. I'd certainly consider him.

Nice post, you have raised a number of interesting points. However I think some of those aren't as cut and dry as you make out.

Your first point about Michu and Swansea's low accuracy being an issue is erroneous. After all despite their low accuracy they still scored plenty of goals. So image what could happen if they improve their accuracy this season? More goals obviously.

You have to be careful when using strikers accuracy to make a point. In the previous season Suarez had a horrible shots to goals ratio but last season he blossomed and became a must have striker as he improved significantly on his accuracy. So really the comparison with the other strikers is also largely unnecessary, although interesting.

The more important issues are Michu's classification, his price and the arrival of a new striker. You raise very good points in this regard and also the comparison with other strikers in how they fit into their respective sides. It will be interesting to see how the strikers you mentioned will fit into their teams as a result of new arrivals or from being new arrivals themselves.

For me I can't say who I favour the most, there are still too many unknown's regarding price and transfers. At this stage a fixtures approach might dictate who I bring on board.

I was going to reply with something similar but you beat me to it 😉 I can imagine certain players shoot more and miss more, which isn't a bad thing if they still have more quality shots on target that other players.

Certainly a good starting point for a discussion JJC, but it's a bit unfair to judge Michu on his team's shot:goal conversion ratio. I'd be more interested in shots in box/shots on target per 90 minutes as an indicator.

Looking through a few more teams statistics, i'd have to agree with you there. Reading had the 4th best shots to goals ratio so it certainly isn't everything! I certainly can't see him having as prolific a season this year regardless though, certainly from a fantasy perspective.

Thanks for the feedback, its the first time i've really tried to piece together something based on statistics so a few details (such as Swansea's accuracy) were admittedly overvalued. Another point to consider with Swansea is the Europa league. Although Laudrup is adding depth to the squad with his new signings, it remains to be seen whether the squad can maintain the same levels as last season with a more congested fixture list.

Good point. Michu's price hike and potential classification as a striker means he'll have to increase his output this season in order to justify a spot in our teams. I doubt it personally so will be staying well clear

Yep, there are a lot of more obvious reasons to stay clear of Michu. Europa, bad fixtures, forward classification?, price, new Swansea striker, second season syndrome etc.

Berbatov relied too much on Fulhams form last season. When they were poor, his attacking output suffered badly, presumably because he had to drop deep to influence games.

Sturridge, if fit and assuming Liverpool don't sell Suarez and buy a big-name replacement, is one of the first players I'll buy

It could be argued that if Suarez is sold, Sturridge becomes a better FPL prospect.

      Great post JJC.

Great analysis there, Berbatov hasn't been mentioned at all but could be a great prospect next season. Good stats work with the attempts vs goals table, I would be cautious about inferring too much about goals scored from chances created though. Swansea still scored a very decent amount of goals, and ultimately this is what counts.

In La Ligua in 2011/12, Michu proved to be very clinical goal scorer, he did have a great conversion rate. You can notice it in the way he hits the ball sometimes, with his penchant for sidefooting it - and he's good at one on ones too. His classification would obviously affect his points scoring; he played the first half of the season as a midfielder and they may hopefully classify him as one. It also happened to be a more productive role for him - something I think he has referred to in the past, as his game is all about late runs into the box, coupled with decent strength and aerial ability.

Ultimately if he plays as a midfielder, and isn't subject to too much rotation - he may well have an excellent haul. Bony should complement Michu well. If defenders are too busy dealing with Bony (and the young Ivorian can certainly hassle defences) it could give Michu time and space to do what he does best.

Great post again, and I'm considering Lambert a lot more now, especially if he comes in at a decent price.

Nice post well researched JJC thanks.

A few points I would make however:

      1) Michu is not certain to be classed as a fwd, Dempsey had a very similar season a few years back for fulham playing off zamora and as a lone striker when zamo was injured. He was classified as a mid at 9/9.5m or something the following season and everyone thought he was too expensive for a fulham mid but by the end of the season everyone had him. I think FPL could keep the game more interesting if the price him high 9.5-10m and leave as a mid (since thats what he is).

      2) Re Berbatov I would be careful. You should probably check what his conversion rate has been historically as he scored a lot of goals for such few shots and if he regresses to a more normal level then he will not be anywhere near as prolific.

      3) following on from point 2 when you look at goals to shot percentages this can be very misleading. As someone above touched on Suarez was very poor in this regard the season before last but he stepped up last season. Personally I try and look at the reasons for poor stats and see if there is any reason why they might improve in the following year and I also look at the converse i.e. the reasons for great stats (as in berbs case for instance he had 4 pens which will always boost your goals to shot average) and if there is any reason why they might regress.

      4) Following on from point 3 and 2 and again touched on above is the potential bargains will be in the teams with a low conversion rate of chances not the ones at the higher end. So the likes of Michu if classed as a 9.5m mid could still be FPL gold if Swansea's europa exploits don't negatively effect them.
