Scout Report – Jozy Altidore

Paolo Di Canio’s summer overhaul of the Sunderland first-team squad continued on Tuesday afternoon with the acquisition of Jozy Altidore from Dutch outfit AZ Alkmaar. The 23-year-old arrives at Wearside on a four-year contract and is the Black Cats’ eighth signing over the close-season, with more new faces still expected to follow:

The transfer ends a lengthy chase for the US international’s signature, with Sunderland seeing off the challenge of a number of suitors, including Italian side Lazio, to bring Altidore to the Stadium of Light. Speaking to the club’s official website, the forward was delighted to return to the English top-flight, having previously plied his trade with Hull back in 2009/10:

“Anybody that knows anything about football knows the Premier League is the full package, it’s the biggest league in the world. I’m thrilled to be here, and I’m looking forward to getting adjusted as quickly as possible. It’s a fantastic club, and I’m really excited about the season. I hope the fans like what I do on the pitch.”

The History

Altidore’s career began as a 16-year-old back in 2006 with the New York Red Bulls. Over the course of a couple of years, he produced 15 goals and four assists in 37 MLS appearances before signing for Spanish club Villarreal in June 2008. His time in Spain was disastrous, though. Altidore managed a single goal from nine appearances and was sent out on loan on three occasions, with temporary stints at Xerez, Hull and Bursaspor harvesting just two goals and eight assists from a combined total of 40 league matches.

A move to Alkmaar in the summer of 2011 proved the making of Altidore. His first season in Holland produced 16 goals and three assists from 34 league games before he stepped up another level last year, with an impressive 31 goals and seven assists from 39 domestic matches. Despite his relatively young age, Altidore has already turned out for the US national side 60 times, finding the net on 17 occasions.

The Prospects

Clearly, Di Canio’s relentless summer recruitment policy is indicative of a lack of faith in the squad inherited from Martin O’Neill – the Italian’s thoughts on his rebuilding program highlight just what he expects from his side next season:

“We are going to build a very, very good team with a very good work ethic. That will be crucial on the field – we are going to face the opponents, we are going to challenge the opponents. All the individuals wearing the shirt need to make the fans proud because this is the minimum that we can do because we have a big privilege to wear the shirt. My team and the players I select will always have to wear this shirt with honour, dignity and respect, otherwise they can’t play under me.”

Having also criticised the fitness levels of players under the previous regime, Di Canio has already introduced a summer boot camp with double training sessions in order to ensure his charges are capable of implementing a high energy pressing game. Indeed, the Black Cats strolled to a 13-1 friendly win over a local XI on Wednesday evening, with Altidore climbing off the bench to notch on his debut.

In all likelihood, Sunderland – providing Di Canio keeps the dressing room on his side – could be a far different proposition next time around, with a new style of play and numerous new signings for Fantasy managers to consider. While the influx of new players currently casts question marks over several starting positions in the Sunderland first-team, the situation up front seems fairly straightforward. Di Canio looks set to pair Altidore with Steven Fletcher up top for the season ahead, in an attempt to address the dire scoring record that saw the Black Cats find the net just 41 times last term – a record superior to just two clubs, Stoke (34) and QPR (30). A front two suggests Stephane Sessegnon will either be forced to the flank or, as suggested by previous reports, sold on as Di Canio restructures his side. Elsewhere up top, Danny Graham and Connor Wickham seem set to be forced further onto the periphery as a result of the new boy’s arrival.

Many will perhaps be sceptical of Altidore’s impact, given that he produced a single goal in 28 appearances for Hull but bearing in mind he was just 20-years-old at the time, playing for a team near the foot of the table, his lack of impact is a little understandable. His phenomenal record for Alkmaar last term bodes well for his potential and speaks volumes for his development, with the US international boasting the height, pace and physique required to flourish alongside Fletcher.

Priced at just 6.3 in the Sky Sports game, Altidore should come in around 6.5 to 7.5 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL) and could prove a decent mid-price option, though there’s no doubt his arrival will boost Fletcher’s goal potential. Given that the Scot notched 11 times in 28 matches in his debut season in a struggling Sunderland side, he may still remain the main man for Di Canio’s side, with his predatory instincts benefitting from a more physical presence alongside him this time round.

With a home game against Fulham and trip to Palace in the opening three matches, Di Canio’s side are handed the chance to hit the ground running early on. If Altidore is quick out the blocks, he could well make a persuasive case for inclusion in our three man frontlines but the downside is that the first few months look tricky overall for the Black Cats, with a schedule over the opening 19 Gameweeks rated third most difficult of any side by our ticker. From Gameweek 4 onwards, Sunderland face Arsenal, Liverpool, United, City, Chelsea and Spurs across six of seven home games – a run that is perhaps enough to deter most from investing in Sunderland’s main assets until the fixtures smile a little kinder later in the season.

Fantasy Football Scout Daily Hot Topic

Will the announcement this morning of the Prem League games which are being televised alter your team selection and strategy in fantasy games?

Do you only like to captain a player in a TV games? Also Chelsea's first fixture on the Sunday could prove profitable for Sky players if they have a double gameweek that week. The Sky game allows one captain switch a week, with points gained from both choices. Anyone looking to take advantage of that?

Definitely taking advantage of that in the Sky game. RVP(c) on Saturday then switch to Chelsea for another 2 games of captaincy points.

GW1 looks very expensive if you want big hitters in for televised games

Seen a lot of people tip Sunderland for relegation because Di Canio is a "madman" and will lose control of the dressing room. Too many people blindly repeating the media. He's a very good passionate manager and I expect both Sunderland, Southampton and Norwich will shoot up the table this season.

PDC has made some very good signings and will improve fitness. There are lots there that really buy into that like OShea.I live in the south west and followed his time at Swindon and ultimately he left there because of behind the scenes financial issues and changes. The performances from the team were great, and if they weren't he'd change it the following week.

At Swindon he surrounded himself with very passionate players who responded to being kicked, spat at and outright abused. Any signings he brings in should fit this mould, but I am not sure all of the current players will be that accepting of his management style.

Would make sense, if the squad at the start of the season is largely his players then he could do very well. A very good manager and appears to know his own weaknesses very well too.

    I sometimes think Paul takes fancy writing too far, maybe stating the obvious simply at the start could be worth a shot. Below are the only two references to Altidores position with the first only appearing in the 8th paragraph;

"Di Canio looks set to pair Altidore with Steven Fletcher up top for the season ahead"

"If Altidore is quick out the blocks, he could well make a persuasive case for inclusion in our three man frontlines"

Guardiola argued that no-one would leave Barcelona unless they weren't in the team, and this is the case with Thiago who wants to play regularly.

It's also completely unheard of for a Bayern manager to put pressure on the board in such a way. Bayern like to act quietly behind the scenes and now such irascible figures as Rummenigge, Hoeness et al, are under pressure to deliver the player, even if Guardiola says it's "up to the club" whether Thiago is signed.

And the COPE report from last night now reads like a deliberate leak from Guardiola, as it contained the Martinez centre-back suggestion that they could only have got from Pep.

      Very odd.

Still unclear how Barca will react to Bayern's move. How bad would it look if they lost the player to Guardiola?

Also hearing that Man Utd had agreed personal terms with Thiago, but disagreed with the player on the insertion of an "escape clause" in the contract.

While this was being resolved, Barcelona put pressure on Thiago to stay and the move slipped away.

      new post repost
      some random questioni,
do wearing a sweater while running in summer lose more weight?

I used to think that it doesn't, as you just lose more water weight, not actual 'body weight'

but then I found out that the higher body temperature = higher metabolism, so wearing sweater do indeed help you lose more weight? (providing acquiring all the lost fluid etc.)

Depends if you're running uphill or downhill, seriously. Running on flat wearing sweater will lose u feck all weight, you need to be putting some strain on your body to lose serious weight. A boxer making weight won't amble around in a sweat suit, he'll push himself hard AND sweat the weight off.

how about if a boxer wear a sweater to increase its metabolism (due to increase body temp.)
          will he lose more weight?

I know it is 99% about the excercise, and if will barely make any difference, but in theory, will wearing a sweater work?

because the 2 theory is kind of contradicting itself

Wearing a sweater will make you lose more weight if you undertake the exact same excercise, however, by wearing a sweater you will not be able to work as hard and thus it actually doesnt achieve anything.

Its only really advised for severly overweight people who cant really move about anyway.

so for example, I planned to run 5 miles anyway, with or without sweater,
than if I wear a sweater to do the excercise (providing running at same speed), it will be more effective at losing weight?

Will you actually run at the same speed though? If you just run faster without you will get your body up to temp. quickly anyway.

also, does that mean running in summer will lose more weight than winter? (even though the difference may not be big)

Internal core temp. is 37 degrees celsius. The outside temp is always lower so doesnt make much difference except to your breathing and how quickly persperation clears.

You lose more in winter as you need to use more energy to maintain your body temperature.

That's not how it works. Your body temperature is higher because of the use of your muscles at a high rate i.e. running. This is what increases your metabolism, not the temperature. If you exercise in the snow for example you need many more calories in a day as your body needs to burn more in order to maintain its required core temperature.

It's all about the level of exertion. Get a training program and run something like 10 to 20 miles a week if you want to lose weight. Wearing a sweater will just make you overheat and sweat a lot, and it will stop you from running proper distances. There's a reason you don't see good runners wearing sweaters in normal weather: it reduces efficiency and holds back fitness gains.

providing that the excercise routine/speed is all the same though...

again, can the same be said when I am doing treadmill in gym with ac on, then running outside in summer?

but if someone have a bad knee, and can't run.
brisk walking with sweater is better than without than.

but again, body temperature stays pretty much constant after reaching some point?

Your body will not let its core temperature rise too much as it's dangerous. You'll reach a point where you can't continue sooner if you wear a sweater.

And if an injury is the limiting condition, then you should be in a swimming pool and not out jarring your legs on the track.

Swimming pools are ideal as the water removes all of the excess heat as well as providing high resistance for your muscles.

Can someone please clarify the sky captain for me.

If I captain RVP for a saturday kickoff and then change the armband over to Bale who is playing a Sunday kickoff,,, Will Bale automatically then be my captain for the following Saturday fixtures? OR, do I get to select an entirely different capt for that weekend if I wanted to?

You could change it to someone else who plays on Saturday but you'd have to leave it on them the whole GW.
If you left in on Bale you'd have the opportunity to change it to someone who plays on Sun/Mon after Bale plays on Sat and have 2 captains that week again.

You have to ask yourself did clubs actually bid for those players? Some were subject to now bids or tentative interest while others Liverpool and perhaps United didn't want to pay over the odds for their targets, and I think that should be respected. There is no doubt clubs will be signing players but it was never certain these players we're really 'targets'.

Transfer season articles are 90% speculation/fantasy to fill column inches, ie lazy journalism.

A team knowingly signing a player whose sole motivation is more money is a quickfix club that'll end up in trouble when their sugardaddy lose interest. City refused to pay stupid money last season but now their flashing the cash again. For me, a player with ambition wants to win trophies. When they're heading to the end of their career then a big money deal to a loaded clubs looks better.

            None.

I just read the new rules of FPL.

*Due to the dubious assist panel being dismantled no assists will be awarded during the 2013/14 season.

Our batting is utterly dreadful. Beyond Clarke and sometimes Watson there is almost no resistance.

With Rooney looking more and more likely to stay, how do you see Utd lining up? Kagawa doesn't look like a great option anymore.

Isn't that part of the reason he wanted to leave? Surely if Moyes wants him to stay, he'll play him behind RVP. Nani leaving?

Moyes has openly said he wants to get Rooney lots of goals, and he has been very impressed with him in training. I doubt he'll shoved out on the wing.

I remember the summer before Veron left for Chelsea. The team and SAf were full of praise for him, even claiming he scored the best goal they'd ever seen in training. Within weeks he was off.

Rooney may stay, he may go, but Moyes and his team mates saying anything about him in training will be no indication of either.

I hope he does stay though and does score ad it'd be good to have a Man Utd option other than RVP for the first time in over a year.

Think people are putting too much emphasis on the Moyes press conference. He had no option but to talk up Rooney as a player, regardless of whether the club wants to keep him or sell him.

And it's irrelevant to Moyes as a manager and the club as a whole, surely, whether Rooney breaks a goal-scoring record or not. You don't make financial decisions about players on that basis.
