Scout Report – Jozy Altidore

Paolo Di Canio’s summer overhaul of the Sunderland first-team squad continued on Tuesday afternoon with the acquisition of Jozy Altidore from Dutch outfit AZ Alkmaar. The 23-year-old arrives at Wearside on a four-year contract and is the Black Cats’ eighth signing over the close-season, with more new faces still expected to follow:

The transfer ends a lengthy chase for the US international’s signature, with Sunderland seeing off the challenge of a number of suitors, including Italian side Lazio, to bring Altidore to the Stadium of Light. Speaking to the club’s official website, the forward was delighted to return to the English top-flight, having previously plied his trade with Hull back in 2009/10:

“Anybody that knows anything about football knows the Premier League is the full package, it’s the biggest league in the world. I’m thrilled to be here, and I’m looking forward to getting adjusted as quickly as possible. It’s a fantastic club, and I’m really excited about the season. I hope the fans like what I do on the pitch.”

The History

Altidore’s career began as a 16-year-old back in 2006 with the New York Red Bulls. Over the course of a couple of years, he produced 15 goals and four assists in 37 MLS appearances before signing for Spanish club Villarreal in June 2008. His time in Spain was disastrous, though. Altidore managed a single goal from nine appearances and was sent out on loan on three occasions, with temporary stints at Xerez, Hull and Bursaspor harvesting just two goals and eight assists from a combined total of 40 league matches.

A move to Alkmaar in the summer of 2011 proved the making of Altidore. His first season in Holland produced 16 goals and three assists from 34 league games before he stepped up another level last year, with an impressive 31 goals and seven assists from 39 domestic matches. Despite his relatively young age, Altidore has already turned out for the US national side 60 times, finding the net on 17 occasions.

The Prospects

Clearly, Di Canio’s relentless summer recruitment policy is indicative of a lack of faith in the squad inherited from Martin O’Neill – the Italian’s thoughts on his rebuilding program highlight just what he expects from his side next season:

“We are going to build a very, very good team with a very good work ethic. That will be crucial on the field – we are going to face the opponents, we are going to challenge the opponents. All the individuals wearing the shirt need to make the fans proud because this is the minimum that we can do because we have a big privilege to wear the shirt. My team and the players I select will always have to wear this shirt with honour, dignity and respect, otherwise they can’t play under me.”

Having also criticised the fitness levels of players under the previous regime, Di Canio has already introduced a summer boot camp with double training sessions in order to ensure his charges are capable of implementing a high energy pressing game. Indeed, the Black Cats strolled to a 13-1 friendly win over a local XI on Wednesday evening, with Altidore climbing off the bench to notch on his debut.

In all likelihood, Sunderland – providing Di Canio keeps the dressing room on his side – could be a far different proposition next time around, with a new style of play and numerous new signings for Fantasy managers to consider. While the influx of new players currently casts question marks over several starting positions in the Sunderland first-team, the situation up front seems fairly straightforward. Di Canio looks set to pair Altidore with Steven Fletcher up top for the season ahead, in an attempt to address the dire scoring record that saw the Black Cats find the net just 41 times last term – a record superior to just two clubs, Stoke (34) and QPR (30). A front two suggests Stephane Sessegnon will either be forced to the flank or, as suggested by previous reports, sold on as Di Canio restructures his side. Elsewhere up top, Danny Graham and Connor Wickham seem set to be forced further onto the periphery as a result of the new boy’s arrival.

Many will perhaps be sceptical of Altidore’s impact, given that he produced a single goal in 28 appearances for Hull but bearing in mind he was just 20-years-old at the time, playing for a team near the foot of the table, his lack of impact is a little understandable. His phenomenal record for Alkmaar last term bodes well for his potential and speaks volumes for his development, with the US international boasting the height, pace and physique required to flourish alongside Fletcher.

Priced at just 6.3 in the Sky Sports game, Altidore should come in around 6.5 to 7.5 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL) and could prove a decent mid-price option, though there’s no doubt his arrival will boost Fletcher’s goal potential. Given that the Scot notched 11 times in 28 matches in his debut season in a struggling Sunderland side, he may still remain the main man for Di Canio’s side, with his predatory instincts benefitting from a more physical presence alongside him this time round.

With a home game against Fulham and trip to Palace in the opening three matches, Di Canio’s side are handed the chance to hit the ground running early on. If Altidore is quick out the blocks, he could well make a persuasive case for inclusion in our three man frontlines but the downside is that the first few months look tricky overall for the Black Cats, with a schedule over the opening 19 Gameweeks rated third most difficult of any side by our ticker. From Gameweek 4 onwards, Sunderland face Arsenal, Liverpool, United, City, Chelsea and Spurs across six of seven home games – a run that is perhaps enough to deter most from investing in Sunderland’s main assets until the fixtures smile a little kinder later in the season.

Re Sky Captain... It seems clear to me that you can pick a new captain every week and then change once within each gw, earning double points from two captains and then picking another one for the next Sat.. Why are people saying this is wrong? 😕

    Captain Changes

New for this season - you can now make a captain change within the Game week. Just like transfers, you can make this alteration for any match day, thus giving you the opportunity to score double points from two of your players over the duration of the Game week.

A Game week starts on Saturday at 00.01am and runs till the following Friday.

Captain changes must be made before the earliest kick off that day, e.g.: prior to the first kick-off on the Saturday. Captain changes made after the earliest kick off will carry over and start scoring from the next match day of the Game week.

Captains will still score double – be it positive or negative.

With two lots of double points on offer, changing your captain can have obvious benefits. Choosing when and how to change it is up to you: here’s a couple of scenarios…

You have Robin Van Persie in place as captain prior to Saturday’s matches. He scores you double points on that day and, that evening you elect to change your captain to Eden Hazard – Hazard plays on Sunday and can therefore also earn you double points in the Game week. However, having made a change, you no longer have the option to change your captain for any match taking place on Monday night or later in the Game week.

You have Robin Van Persie in place as captain for Saturday’s matches. He scores you points on that day and, rather than elect to change your captain to a player in action on Sunday, you switch your captaincy to Santi Cazorla. He plays on Monday night, allowing you to score double points from his performance in addition to Van Persie’s double tally from Saturday.

Oh contrare Milanista. It works perfectly for those taking their 4-8GW planning seriously.

You need to balance your Sat/Sun/Mon players over a number of weeks.
          Other games do this.
It favours the dedicated player rather than the casual.

I think it's the first one Jonty has said.

The difference between FPL and Sky is that in FPL there is 'tinkering time' between when one GW ends and the next starts. In Sky when GW1 ends on Friday midnight, GW2 starts immediately

I dont think so Jonty (although that would be ideal) i got this response from sky.

            My Question:
The part that needs explaining regarding captain change is if you have in gw1 had rvp captain sat then carzola on sunday in order to gain double points from 2 players. When it comes to the next game week my captain is already carzola, if i change this to torres prior to gw2 sat first kick off can i still then change it on sunday to aguero for double points? or is the only way to get double again leave it as carzorla for sat and then change sun to aguero?

            The reponse:
Thank you for your recent correspondence.

If you change your captain to Torres in game week 2, you will not be able to make any further changes to your captain in that game week. You can only make 1 change to your captain in each game week.

            Kind regards

Ah so SW6's take on it, rather than Wild Rover's appears to be the right one.

This is going to take a hell of a lot of studying of the TV fixtures.

So ideally we are going to want to have

gwk 1 sat captain, change to sun/mon capt
gwk2 -locked in last sun/mon capt to play on sat, change to sun/mon capt
gwk 3 - locked in last sun/mon capt to play on sat, change to sun/mon capt

              repeat until end of season.

Any teams play Sat one week, sun/mon the next in the main?

Gameweeks start on Saturday until Friday.

Any captaincy change within that period Saturday to Sunday or Monday to Wednesday is your captaincy change.

      Here's how I see it:

      Saturday: RVP(c)
Sunday/Monday: change to 'player 2' who plays that day and take advantage of 2 captains.

That is then your 1 captain change done.

Next Saturday morning 'player 2' is your captain, you could change that morning to a player who plays on Saturday but then again thats you captain change done for the GW. Or you could leave it on 'player 2' get his double points for Saturday and then change it to someone who plays on Sun/Mon that week. Keep this going all season and you have 2 Captains every GW.

That would mean that it would pay to do alot of research into who is playing the sat and sun/mon games each week so that you are locked in with a sun/mon capt one week who then plays on the sat the following week?

        Does that sound right?

Thats how i see it aswel, i have emailed sky multiple times but they do not repsond with any clarity. I think you are locked in which means you need to plan way ahead and even select a player who has a worse fixture simply because he gives you the double chance. Also what happens if you transfer out your captain, does that count as your captain change or not? What happens when there is a blank gameweek do you have the oppertunity to change your captain without it effecting your chance of a double? We really need clarity on these issues before the season starts.

That's another good point re captaincy, as to whether a transfer out of a captain counts as a change...or does the captaincy remain on the position rather than the player.

The Metro World Cup game had that rule....meant the savvy players were transfering out their captain but retaining a captain change.

I guess we'll find out after GW1 when people have tested it out. I personally prefer the locked in interpretation of the rule. It would require more tactics and not just cherry-picking two captains every week.

Agreed, i think we all need to use the 'contact us' tab on sky FF and pester them until they clarify the issues. Jonty please see above my response from sky in regards to captain changes.

Noooooooooooooo, your not thinking this through.

Pester them and they might decide they need to clarify it to all. Which seems a waste of your advantage, especially given that it will take only one week to determine the actual rules.

But i dont like the idea of wasting potential points by testing theories and losing ground as i only get one captain. I also dont like the idea of doing all this planning and then finding out other people are managing to get 2 captains by setting their captain in the 'grace period' (if it exists) and being able to select the 'prefered' choice for that GW. It would be nice to know beforehand.

cheers, yes saw it. I've emailed Mark and Paul as well to see if we can offer some clarity in future articles. If your interpretation is correct then this presents a golden opportunity for the experienced FF manager to plan ahead and get a good lead going.

It has completey changed the dynamic of the game and i think it gives those in the know a huge advantage. I have been speaking with Mark a little about helping out the site in regards to Sky for exactly this kind of reason.

Midweek is still part of the GW, you could only change midweek if you hadn't already changed from a Saturday captain to a Sunday captain

I have got a template relating to the fixtures and double captains that gives me a double captain every week. I have only gone up to the 1st of December.

It uses only these teams ( and i think u can guess which players)

                  Man Utd
                  Spurs
                  City
                  Liverpool
                  Chelsea
Arsenal (optional can use Utd again)
                  Everton (once)

Nice. I think it's definitely important to try and have a midfield/forward player from each of the top 6 if you're going to make the most of the captain rule, because it's often those teams that play on Sunday/Monday

I don't suppose you would share this DGW captaincy/fixtures template. I am trying but keep getting Newcastle appearing in GW1? Also, does it take into account possible Double GW for Chelsea due to Supercup?

Your right Romani i have no captain playing on the 24th so this is the only week without a double captaincy otherwise you have to use Newcastle and then it gets messy.

Ill give you the first few i use then you can go from there:

                      17th - RVP
                      18th - Bale
                      24th - Blank
                      25th - Aguero
                      31st - Aguero
                      1st - RVP
                      14th - RVP
                      and on and on

I find it easier to work backwards through the fixtures.

From a personal point of view, whilst this makes the game interesting I don't like the change.

For one thing it's a complicated rule as this thread has proven - even hardcore Fantasy Football players are struggling to understand the rules. It will also further increase the gap between casual and hardcore players and dissuade casuals from taking part if they have to make even more changes.

I hope FPL don't implement anything like this, I want my FPL mini league (containing hardcore and casuals) to be as competitive as possible and not put off any casuals from staying in the league.

A firing Rooney is undoubtedly one of the best players in the league. Maybe his relationship with Fergie had just broken down, so the management change might well be a good thing for him.

Got a record for the 10th wicket partnership in his second game in a sheffield shield match for Western Australia against Queensland. Lehman was the coach of Queensland that day so I think it makes perfect sense why he put him at 11 this time.

When it gets tough at Barca, he takes a 'one year break' and goes to a job with the best squad in Europe.

Buys the best players from their closest rivals and now this. Fecked us in two finals now this.

        Fecking Pep. Fecking Bayern.

Personally, I would like to see Schweinsteiger at Chelsea instead of De Rossi... So if Bayern sign Thiago, maybe Chelsea can bid for Schweni... Supposedly Shweni is a good friend of Roman...

I'm more annoyed by their need to gut Dortmund just to be absolutely certain there are no other teams remotely capable of competing. There's a real bought league. That said, Dortmund have made some very good signings so hopefully they'll be a problem next season. Fecking Bayern,

It was suggested to me here to play Smith over Agar as Smith is an allrounder and can get both bowling and batting points... But he never bowled... 🙁

First observation is that with Chelsea playing on the Sunday, if they have a DGW it could be RVP (c) on the Saturday, then switch to Chelsea (c).

Or does this make a Chelsea DGW less likely?

Wild Rover. The problem of capitalising on the Sky captaincy rules is clear from just the first few gameweeks.

If you move it after Saturday's games on GW1, you have a choice of :

      Crystal Palace V Tottenham
      Chelsea V Hull
      Man City V Newcastle

However, Tottenham, Chelsea and City don't play on the Saturday of GW2 either...

The 2nd gameweek to the 3rd is actually the only one uptil when i stopped planning in December that is problamatic for a double captain. Only Newcastle, Hull and Palace can be used.
