Scout Report – Martin Olsson

Norwich boss Chris Hughton made his fourth signing of the summer earlier this week by snapping up Martin Olsson from Championship outfit Blackburn. The 25-year-old moves to Carrow Road on a four-year contract and follows Ricky Van Wolfswinkel, Nathan Redmond and Javier Garrido through the door, with the latter sealing a permanent deal after a successful loan stint last season:

Speaking to the Canaries official website, Hughton revealed the Swede’s versatility on the flank was a key factor in his decision to purchase the former Ewood Park star:

“We’re delighted with the addition of Martin. He’s been playing in England for seven years and is well acclimatised to the Premier League. He can also play anywhere on the left hand side so he brings us good flexibility in that sense, plus at 25 he’s at an age where he has some experience and also some time to improve. At this time it’s about improving the squad that we have and Martin certainly does that.”

The History

A product of the Högaborgs BK youth set-up in his native Sweden, Olsson was picked up by Blackburn in January 2006. Having continued his development with the Rovers youth side, Olsson made a couple of appearances for the senior side in 2007/08 in a season that saw him voted the club’s Young Player of the Year.

Despite his attacking forays down the flank, the Swede failed to thrive during his time in Lancashire – Olsson produced two goals and nine assists over 88 Premier League matches and managed just one assist in 29 appearances in the Championship last season. On the international stage, he’s been a little more successful, though; Olsson has turned out a combined 17 times for Sweden’s Under 19 and Under 21 sides, scoring once, but has produced four goals and an assist from just 17 appearances for the senior side.

The Prospects

Hughton’s words will certainly afford Fantasy managers a fair degree of optimism for the season ahead, with Olsson potentially under consideration as an out of position prospect. Given that he’s likely to be listed as a defender across the Fantasy games, a move to the Norwich left wing in a 4-4-1-1 would bring him onto many a radar, though of all the scenarios that could unfold next term, that is clearly the most optimistic.

In midfield, it remains to be seen whether Olsson can oust Anthony Pilkington as a left wing regular; granted, the latter made just 25 starts last season but his game time was mainly curtailed by injury – the fact he still managed to find the net five times (just one less than Robert Snodgrass) highlights his keen eye for goal. In defence, Olsson also has a fight on his hands to find a way past Garrido as Hughton’s preferred left-back – the Italian started all but four of Norwich’s league fixtures last term and had looked nailed-on until the new boy’s arrival.

While Olsson’s acquisition may hold promise right now, his versatility could be more detrimental than advantageous to his game time, with the worst-case scenario seeing him used as bench-warmer back-up for either Pilkington or Garrido as and when required. Unless pre-season line-ups immediately suggest Olsson is earmarked for a starting berth, Fantasy managers will initially steer clear and look to safer options elsewhere in the Norwich backline.

The likes of Russell Martin, Seb Bassong and Michael Turner all seem set to continue as first-choice picks under Hughton but, having scored three times apiece last term, are likely to be priced higher than the Swede across the Fantasy games – given that Norwich produced 10 clean sheets in 2012/13, a price of around 5.0 for the trio in Fantasy Premier League (FPL) looks on the cards.

Bearing in mind that eight of those clean sheets arrived at Carrow Road, the opening schedule merely furthers Norwich’s appeal; a kind run of home games sees them entertain Villa, Cardiff, West Ham, Palace, Swansea and Fulham in six of the first seven fixtures in front of their own fans, with a strong home/away rotation offered up by twinning Hughton’s side with Stoke. Ultimately, if John Ruddy comes in at 4.5 between the sticks, though, it’s hard to look beyond the Canaries keeper as our most appealing angle for Norwich defensive cover over the campaign ahead.

It's the same old thing......Whatever his price his, it will seem a tad too much. But then he is one of those players, that are really hard to get into the team as you have to make budget cuts (2-3 transfers) just to fit him in. That's the mistake I made last season, 8 pts hit 2 week in a row, to just squeeze him in. Much better if I started out with him.

To answer the question, he will be priced between 13-14 million which seems fine for a player of his caliber. Anything over 14 equates to transfer hits later on in the season.

Also never seen him. But 27 goals in 68 games for Barca B! On Wikipedia, he's a "Forward/Winger", so he could easily be classified as a forward, but if he's a mid, he could be one of the Fantasy masterstrokes of the season! Either way, I'm gonna wait a few weeks before I consider bringing him in. Need to see some guaranteed game time first.

It's nice to catch up on the hot topics when you've been away for a while.
I enjoyed the very serious debate regarding "Why Michu should be overlooked". It was so serious it bordered on coma-inducing-boredom.

The REAL reason Michu should be overlooked is that stupid celebration he does.

    Is he ;

    (a) Adjusting his ear muffler
    (b) Changing the volume on his headset
    (c) Dislodging some particularly stubborn earwax
    (d) Checking a coconut for milk content
    (e) Screwing on his robo-ear
    (f) Performing a tamed down version of the Haka

Regardless, the fact he has a really large face also puts me off.

Cisse for the start, Bony after GW6- Apart from playing City away in the opening game, Newcastle's fixtures are WHM, FUL, avl, HUL. - I think Cisse is a player (much like Demba Ba) who blows really hot or really cold. He could start the season really hot (like Ba's 1st half of the season last year compared to his 2nd half of the season before when Cisse first arrived). I think Cisse could be a decent differential too! But this all depends on which striker Newcastle buys (it's not even an if, it is happening!), so provided Cisse remains 1st choice.

RVW. Altidore's got a better goalscoring record recently, but I want to see how Altidore fits in with Fletcher to start off with. I also need to watch a bit more of Altidore. I haven't seen him in the past 2 or 3 years, but he looked awful for the US a few years ago, although he was very young. Plus, he's gotta be pretty decent to have scored 31 goals last season!

Hazard for the start, Mata overall

Hull for the start, Cardiff overall. Cardiff's opening fixtures: whm MCY EVE hul TOT ful NEW che. I wouldn't pick them once! Hull play NOR CAR WHM AVL in their opening 7 fixtures!

Navas - most game time IMO, perhaps Kagawa if Rooney misses the start.

Koren - Whoever is on pens actually! As far as I'm aware Koren is number 1 penalty taker, but they only had 2 pens last year in the Championship, Koren took 1 (when Brady was on the field) and Brady took the other (but Koren was off the pitch). So I assume Koren is their penalty taker and Brady's the backup?

      A) Carroll, because he has already proven himself in the PL, ended last season in good form, and WHU have juicy fixtures.

      B) RvW, because he is #1 striker for his team. Altidore is number #2 to Fletcher, though PDC might roll out a 4-4-2. And Cornelius has surely been bought as a Benteke cover.

      C) Hazard, will be fresher at the start of the season.

      D) Cardiff. I didn't follow the Championship too well, but stats say that they are much more resilient at home than the other two.

      E) Navas, probably the only one among the 3 who will shirley nailed-on. Kagawa, only if Rooney leaves.

I have seen a lot of you being skeptical about Swansea's prospects this season, because there is a chance they will suffer from first-season-in-Europe hangover syndrome.

But their signings in the transfer window make me feel otherwise. They have not let any of their players go, and more importantly, all their signings (except Bony) have been to add depth in the positions they already have adequate players. The quality of the squad is also very decent - Michu, Bony, Chico, Vorm, de Guzman and Hernandez are footballers who have that quality to succeed in the European level.

That said, Swansea's terrible fixtures from GW1- GW6 puts a lot of people off, but then, I'm completely not ruling them out. If prices permit, Hernandez as the 4th/5th midfielder, and Bony as the 3rd striker are option worth pondering about. Michu at 9.0m completely puts me off though, unless FPL decide to spring in a pleasant surprise, and retain him as a midfielder.

Your take on having a Swansea player in the GW1 team?

Yes shirley, unless they get affected by Newcastle-esque injuries this season.
Imagine a Swansea team without Michu and Hernandez for the entire season.

I might go with a three-way rotation in attack (strikers and mids) and stick Bony in. His stats from last season are too good for me to not have him in my team.

Not interested at present. Would have Young Davies but he's no longer guaranteed a spot. Michu's price might be a deterrent too.

There's bound to be a new Michu this season though.

You can't compare Michu to Sigurdsson. Sigurdsson didn't even get enough chances to prove himself at Tottenham, Swansea were the ideal fit for him.

You didn't get it probably. Siggy came in January and took FPL by storm 2 seasons back, I was comparing Michu's run with that of Siggy's when he joined Swansea.

I agree that some players could well be worth it. Bony in particular has to be a serious contender. He has the same reputation Michu had last year but he's a striker. It will be interesting to see how he is priced.

Yeah, he has a very good goalscoring record last year, much like Altidore.
I think he would be around 8.0, provided he is a proven goalscorer, and a #1 striker atm for a top-10 team.

The Swans have let players go like Lita and Moore. Secondly rotation could plqy a big part and until we know who it is best to obsrve. Maybe Bony wont be roataed but if he plays in both the BPL and EL he may bfe faituge and not be a useful in the BPL. It is a situation which needs monitoring

I think that this might be because we set members logins to timeout after 12 hours (or around that) for security reasons - e.g.: in case you were logged on a public machine. It's like if you log in to your bank or any other protected area online. I'll chat to Ed to see if anything can be tweaked with this, though.

In my opinion you need to balance the security needs against the user experience when you set the timeout. This isn't online banking, it's access to football stats. The chances of an 'attacker' nefariously using your FFS login to do bad deeds are slim because of low motivation, and if they did, what would be the worst that would happen?

    Bale (12.0), Coutinho (8.5), Fernandinho (8.0), Dejagah (6.5), Brady (5.0),
    Hazard (13.0), Mata (13.0), Lambert (10.0)

You are missing a few ultra-essentials in Metro.

Angel Rangel, Cazorla and RVP for starters. Cheap defenders don't do so well in Metro. Matthew Lowton at Villa was one exception.

Mata is classified as a fwd in Metro so be aware of that.

I meant, why would you choose two midfielders to take up those slots?

They are reverse OOP, is it because of how the bonus works?

Mata and Hazza are both classified as fwds in Metro. Damn annoying because you are trying to slot them alongside RVP, Suaz et al.

A couple of questions about the Metro game...

    Is there an optimal formation?

    Are there any must haves?

Is there random OPTA scoring on top of the normal points for scoring etc?

Why would you choose midfielders as part of your forwards, why not go for all out goal scorers? Bonus?

Defenders are the lowest scorers - that includes Baines at around 50ppg. Three defenders maximum. You can play 5 mids-you'll never omit Bale and Cazorla if you have any sense.

The real dilemna is 5 mids/2 fwds (3-5-2) or four mids/3 fwds (3-4-3). I tend to use the latter.

I can't see any west ham player scoring high... The only potential for that is Nolan and Carroll if he remains fit.

Pointless. Just a league from Rd 1 to Rd 18 or whatever. FFS rank after Rd 18 would be the same thing.

One based on how many years you have been playing?

      So 1st season, 2nd, 3rd, 4th and 5 plus...

Not sure how many first timers would be here though.

5 leagues, seems too much. Rather everyone competing against each other.

Last Man Standing would be a GW thing where the lowest "X" scores get eliminated.

Der Hammer used to have a FFS 2nd Years ML, followed the following season by Third, and I enjoyed playing in these. It's good for those who are fairly new to the game, but later on the number of years becomes less important.

There is a google doc plugin which Isacki uses, that you can use to publish the scores directly to the google doc.

Or to keep things simple, if you make the page layout in the form a table, tr, and td, then a copy/paste in google doc will work great.

Btw it really shouldn't take 15 minutes....So if you are doing 120 names, do it 20x6, rather than 120x1. Spread the load, it's much faster.

A December league. For when there are loads of games close together with tons of rotation. It takes a very good FPL manager to navigate that period of the season.

All looks good...but there are plenty you can consider for "second" teams..."Theme teams" (ensures a vast variety of teams) is a nice one or "three transfers a week" (no more no less, helps get rid of the transfer mania in you first team with everbody on an equal footing)...

How is the weather now? If it is as sunny as it was last morning, it will be ideal for England.
After all, the Aussie attack doesn't have a reverse swing expert like Anderson, and I don't rate Agar as a spinner from what I've seen of him so far.

        Currently it's 59% England, Australia 34.5% Australia, 6.5% Draw.

Batting last will be hard & the real Aussie batsman will need to stannd up.
