Scout Report – Leroy Fer

Norwich boss Chris Hughton dipped back into the summer transfer market on Saturday evening to acquire the services of midfielder Leroy Fer from Dutch club FC Twente. The 23-year-old, who arrives at Carrow Road on a four-year contract, is believed to have cost the Canaries around £7m and is the club’s sixth new signing over the close season as Hughton strengthens his squad in an attempt to improve upon last term’s eleventh place finish.

Fer – whose mooted move to Everton last winter was cancelled after he failed a medical – sailed through the Canaries assessment and will now join up with Hughton’s side once he receives international clearance. In an interview with the club’s official website, the Norwich boss was clearly delighted with his new acquisition:

“We are really pleased to have acquired the signature of a player with the qualities that Leroy has. He’s a very versatile Dutch international and at 23 he has that pleasing balance of having acquired experience playing over 100 games in the Dutch League – but still having plenty of time ahead of him to continue his development as a player here with us at Norwich City.”

The History

A product of the Feyenoord youth academy, Fer was handed a first-team opportunity midway through the 2007-08 season as an 18-year-old. After establishing his place as a regular, he went on to play 103 times in the Eredivisie for the club, producing 14 goals and 12 assists, before he was picked up by FC Twente just prior to the closure of the 2011 summer transfer window in a deal believed to be around the €5m mark.

Fer then spent two full seasons at FC Twente and despite being utilised as a defensive midfielder, still managed to chip in with 13 goals and seven assists over 52 league appearances. In Europe, in particular, his contribution was key, with six goals and a pair of assists during Twente’s Europa League run last term. On the international stage, Fer has featured at every level from Under 17 to Under 21 a total of 50 times, finding the net on 10 occasions, including two goals in four appearances at this summer’s Euro Under 21 Championships. He has also represented the senior Dutch side on a couple of occasions.

The Prospects

Nicknamed “The Bouncer”, the six foot two Fer will add a real presence to the Norwich central midfield. While he’s versatile enough to play in “the hole” and has even featured as emergency right-back for Feyenoord, it’s a fair assumption that he’s been purchased as a defensive midfielder and should jump ahead of the likes of Bradley Johnson, Alex Tettey and Johnny Howson in the first-team pecking order.

While Norwich were defensively decent last term from a Fantasy perspective, with 10 clean sheets accrued, Hughton will still be looking to address a record which saw the Canaries concede 58 times in his first season at the helm. Fer’s physical attributes look tailor-made for the Premier League, with a decent disciplinary record of just eight yellow cards in the last three seasons suggesting he’s timely in the challenge, too.

Fer’s attacking output will also be key to his guaranteed game time. Bearing in mind that Johnson, Tettey and Howson managed a mere three strikes between them all season, Norwich certainly need to improve upon a measly 41 goals in 2012/13 – a tally only better than Stoke and QPR, with 34 and 30 respectively.

Yet to be added to either the Sky Sports game or the Sun Dream Team, Fer is expected to come in around the 5.5 mark in Fantasy Premier League (FPL). Despite a strong opening schedule which sees Hughton’s men host Everton, Southampton and Villa and travel to Hull in the opening five Gameweeks, the Dutchman is likely to struggle for our attention – with Robert Snodgrass priced at 6.5, the former Leeds man looks the obvious candidate in the Norwich midfield after registering 152 points last time out. Fer’s installation in Hughton’s starting XI could see him benefit from the new FPL bonus system, however, and should also bode well for their defensive resilience in the season ahead, making the Norwich backline options just that little bit more enticing.

I don't see the value in Mirallas in FPL. Him and Coleman are both 6.5m in Sky, but in FPL they are 5.0/7.5m. Coleman all the way!

        Different scoring

Look at Mirallas last season, 6 goals 5 assists and he never got a run together and was classed as a forward. With a full season and decent striker up top I can easily see him reaching double figures for both goals and assists, which makes him well worth 7.5

Anybody else thinking on here that Sunderland aka Mannone will really struggle this season with be leaking goals? part of the reason they were decent defensively last year was because of the discipline and resolve that O'Neil built into them....far as i can see Di Canio seems more driven this season to improving the dire goal scoring record......relegation contenders for me.......

i'm emotionally incapable of dealing with owning aguero anymore(the terror!! the terror!!) and Rvp is priced a bit too high. Considerin Suarez out for months(and out of pool maybe) Sturridge looks a good option for my only high priced striker.. Only Berbatov tickles my fancy apart from him.

and the promoted clubs articles here on ffscout.

    FULHAM:

Kacaniklic (5.0) - Great flashes last season, some injuries diminished his overall score, seems set for a solid season. Opening fixtures not so good though.

    HULL

Brady (5.0) - 32 apps, 4 goals, 13 assists. Left wing/wingback/back for hull, but played in the hole for the last game of the season. Shares set pieces with Koren, second in the pecking order for Penalties.
Koren (5.0) - 40 apps, 9 goals, 5 assists. Usually plays in the hole, set pieces, penalties. Top scorer for hull last season.
Both seem good picks, Koren just shades it with penalties, but the new BP system might push Brady a bit more.

    CARDIFF

No real options due to rotations(noone), out of form-ness (whittingham), and lack of production (kim). Bellamy at 5.5 seems the best pick, going forward a lot and sharing set pieces with kim.

    PALACE

Owen Garvan (5.0) - 30 apps, 4 goals, 6 assists. Low number of apps due to a knee injury. Plays in the hole and seems the best pick of the lot for Palace. Takes the majority of set pieces and is second in the penalty kick order.
Yannick Bolasie (5.0) 45 apps, 3 goals, 8 assists. Nailed on left winger last season, solid pick but not great returns when taking the number of apps in account. Also, williams may take his place.
Jonathan Williams (4.5) 32 apps, 1 assist - Probably appeared a lot from the bench, young player, started on the left instead of Bolasie in the playoffs. Wait and see.
Jerome Thomas (4.5) - Seems to be in the managers plans, cheapie at 4.5, but not sure its worth the risk as there is no security of starts at the beggining of the season.

    VILLA

Tonev (5.0) 31 apps, 5 goals, unknown assists. Attacking midfielder, should be slotted in behind the central striker, or on the wing. Seems a good pick for villa with Benteke's price and future club uncertainty.

    EVERTON

Barkley (4.5) - If he somehow finally starts playing he COULD be good value, but you could just get Coleman or Alcaraz for Everton defensive cover and Mirallas or Kone up top that seem better picks.

I left out a bunch of Central Midfield players as they were not relevant to FPL in the past. I'm not really sure how much the new bonus system will really help them this year. Feel free to comment on that and add your thoughts.

Also, feel free to add any player i missed out on.

Jedinak (CPL) is nailed on 100%. Although he is very defensive, he is good bench fodder, guaranteed to play and allows you to spend extra in other places, plus he could get some baps.

Kac seems the best option there I think. Pity the fixtures are a bit tough in the first 5 GW's. Although I believe Berbatov is great value at 7.5m which might limit the need for Kac.

At this stage I might favour Koren or Bellamy.

I came back from the vacations and I can see that FPL is re-opened! :))

My first draft-team is like this:

    Boruc | Foster
    Mert | Coleman | Shaw | Turner | Saylor
    Bale | Hazard | Barfa | Mirallas | Thomas
    Aguero | Sturridge | J-Rod

    thoughts..?

I'm currently looking at Gunnarsson and Redmond as possible cheapie midfielders, not seen either of them mentioned though.

Anyone else like the look of them?

This is my first draft so be gentle!

    Boruc - Foster
    Nastasic - Coleman - Turner - Collins - Chester
    Bale - Hazard - Walcott - Ramirez - Thomas
    Aguero - Berbatov - RvW

maybe clyne come in for collins?
    Pablo hernandez better than ramirez?
Aspas instead of RvW for pool coverage

So who's goin with Berba? average fixtures i know but he had an ok first season at fulham and will only get better this season imo.. Him, Lambert and Carroll look gr8 value(and i'm honestly tempted to go with all 3 upfront 😯 )

I'm on Lambert, Carroll and Kone at the moment.

      Others being considered:

      Berbatov
      Giroud
      Sturridge
      JRod

      They're all quite tempting 😕

Jrod temptin me too.. prob is if i take him he'll end up being my cheapest attacker on the bench most weeks and he's a bit too expensive for that. What's your mid like?

          Currently:

          Bale, Walcott, Hazard, Silva, Williams

Absolutely guaranteed to change before the start of the season though!

I've got Berba/Lambert/Anelka at the moment but it seems a bit weak

It allows me to have a Power 5 Midfield though

I'm going Lambert, but that might just be cos I'm a Saints fan !

I thought about Berba as well and having a cheap strike force but at the end of the day I anit got the balls so have gone with Mr Robin Reliant, aka RVP

      My team so far

      Jussi
      Zab Mert Garrido
      Bale Walcott Snoddy Morrison
      RVP Lambert Anelka

      Wanyama Clyne Chester

Lots of value to be had there. For the sake of balance I think its necessary to have one expensive striker. I've gone for Berbatov and Lambert.

I was tempted to give FF a miss this season and enjoy the season as a Man United fan. No longer would I have any interest in whether Guy Demel has played over 60 mins to earn a CS, or if Bale got a dubious touch on the cross, it was all about United and their results... or so I thought...

...My self-restraint lasted until the U21 Euros competition came along in early June and I finished 8th overall 8). Since then I have joined the Sky game, FPL game and felt the need to shamelessly blow my own trumpet earlier in the previous sentence. Will probably become a lurking member again when payday comes around as well.

Now, to decide on Turner or Turner, Bony or Kone, RvP or RvW...

good team, but not sure i see rotation risk in Mertesacker, Nastasic and Lampard
plus i dont REALLY like Sturridge because liverpool failed to score at home so often last year
prefer to go with Glen Johnson - at £6m he's a bargain.........

Quick poll. Really stuck between these choices:

    A. Coleman, Toure, Snodgrass, Aguero, Mirallas
    B. Coleman, Yanga-Mbiwa, Silva, Sturridge, Mirallas
    C. Alcaraz, Yanga-Mbiwa, Snodgrass, RVP, Brunt (Ruiz & Brunt rotate well here but lose Mirallas & City's brilliant first 3 fixtures)

Please assume there is no DGW1.

    Thanks a bunch!
