Moving Target

Moving Target – Jerome Thomas

Crystal Palace boss Ian Holloway made his third signing of the close season last week by acquiring Jerome Thomas on a free transfer. The 30-year-old arrives at Selhurst Park on a two-year deal and follows Dwight Gayle and Stephen Dobbie to the club as Holloway strengthens his side in preparation for next term.

Speaking to the Palace official website, Thomas admitted he had a number of offers on the table but, following talks with the Eagles boss, was convinced he’ll have a part to play for in the season ahead:

“It was a case of me being on a free and weighing up my options. I wanted to stay at the top level, which is obviously the Premier League. I heard of Crystal Palace’s interest from January actually, and once they got promoted Ollie gave me a call when I was away on holiday, we had a good talk for about 45 minutes and after that conversation there wasn’t much doubt in my mind where I wanted to go. I hope I can bring a lot to the team. I’ve got experience of the Premier League and the gaffer’s going to give me the freedom to play how I want to play – my attacking game – which I haven’t been able to do for the last couple of seasons. That’s what I’m looking forward to.”

The History

A product of the Arsenal youth academy, Thomas failed to make a single Premier League appearance for the Gunners. Farmed out on loan to QPR between 2001-03, he featured just 10 times over two seasons and found the net three times before Charlton snapped him up for £100,000 back in 2004.

Established as a regular at The Valley, the winger went on to make 103 appearances, producing seven goals and four assists for the Championship club before making his way to then-Premier League Portsmouth on loan in August 2008. Thomas signed a permanent one-year deal just a few days later but a spine problem put paid to his game time and restricted him to a couple of appearances.

He was then snapped up by West Brom as a free agent the following summer and proceeded to play a pivotal part in the Baggies return to the top-flight, scoring seven times and providing a pair of assists in 27 Championship appearances. Thomas’ most impressive campaign in the Premier League arrived in 2010/11, where he managed three goals and seven assists in 33 appearances, but the installation of Roy Hodgson and, subsequently, Steve Clarke, proved detrimental to his prospects. The winger managed just one goal and three assists in 39 appearances over the past two seasons and was farmed out on loan to Leeds for a brief spell last term, producing a goal and pair of assists in six matches before returning to his parent club.

The Prospects

Judging by Thomas’ comments, it certainly seems that he’s been given assurance of game time over the season ahead as Holloway looks for a little extra top-flight experience in order to prevent Palace from slipping straight back into the Championship. While the Eagles boss fielded Yannick Bolasie on the left flank for the vast majority of last season’s matches, it was noticeable that he turned to youngster Jonathan Williams for the play-offs – a suggestion that he wasn’t quite settled on a regular for the position.

Alternatively, Thomas could be handed the role in “the hole” behind a lone forward in Holloway’s 4-2-3-1 formation for the season ahead and if he’s afforded the above-mentioned “freedom”, could prove a canny purchase by the Londoners. Yet to be listed by either the Sun Dream Team or the Sky Sports games, Thomas’ appeal for the 2013/14 is mainly down to a cut-price valuation of 4.5 in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) game, making his perfect fifth midfielder material.

With virtually every other midfielder under 5.0 plying their trade in a more defensive position, Thomas’ popularity is likely to take an unexpected hike as we analyse the Player Lists for this season’s Raheem Sterling or Jason Puncheon. While there will surely be more alternatives to come over the next few weeks as clubs bolster their squads, the likes of Villa’s Aleksandar Tonev, Southampton’s Victor Wanyama and Hull trio Robbie Brady, Ahmed Elmohamady or Roberto Koren (all priced at 5.0) could appeal to those eyeing up a midfield rotation partner for the former Baggies man, with the latter two offering a solid option over the first seven Gameweeks.

Essentially, then, we’re not expecting Thomas to light up the top-flight on a weekly basis but at that price, he could prove decent value for money if Holloway is true to his word and hands him a regular role.

Which 5.5 defender do you think will score more points in 3 GWs?

    A. mert (AVL, ful, TOT)
    B. nasty (NEW, car, HUL)
    C. shawx (liv, CRY, whu)

or do you think it'll be D. Coleman at 5.0 (nor, WBA, car)?

i'm thinknig Nasty too, that's why he's my 1st choice atm.

Arsenal do concede stupid goals, but they had a good start defensively last season (couple of 0-0s) when not many people predicted it, i think there's a big chance it might happen again.

Should be Nasty, Coleman might give a challenge if he plays right wing and is nailed on. Two many "iffies" so I would go for Nasty. Nothing wrong getting them both though..

PICKING YOUR INITIAL SQUAD AND PRICE CHANGES

Protecting your bank is key in this game
Prices fluctuate wildly in the first few weeks of the season , and if you have a poor first gameweek you could well be set on losing money on a number of players . Either that or be forced into multiple hits or wildcard.
There will be big bandwagons , that can be relied upon . One of the newboys will shine and suddenly become a must have. Will you be ready?

Here are some tips to help ensure you are on the right side of the price war.

    1) Make sure your players are nailed on

    2) Cheap defenders and keepers generally do not drop in price. Even if they only score a point or two ,it wont matter , its all they are expected to get. But if a more expensive defender flops . He will be sold in droves to free up cash elsewhere , and you looking at price drops.

    3) Always check the second fixture with your mids and attackers. Because if they flop in their first game and are away to City in GW 2 watchout

    4) Target players who are generally considered to be underpriced , there will be less of a reaction if they fail in GW1 . Avoid players like Courtinho who are generally seen as expensive.. If he blanks GW1 people will be jumping ship onto whichever mid scored a goal

Summary , if you keep your defence and keepers cheap , you wont need to waste an early transfer on them. If you select undervalued mids and strikers there will also be less pressure. Try and ensure their next three fixtures are reasonable. Protecting your bank is key in this game

protecting your bank - sounds like a decent plan. But what will happen if there is another Rafael? His price went soaring from 5.5 and he was the man to get. With that kind of backline of yours, you need 2 transfers to catch up and bring the guy in.

Same boat... Demel, Clyne and Davies paired with Enrique i had almost all of last season... spent about 5-6 on another defender that was rotated depending on who had the best fixtures and it worked a treat

I'll be doing similar this season too

Okay, i understand. So what's your opinion on Coleman? Do you think he's underpriced thus a good pick? at 5.0 & OOP, he has the potential to rise if he performs greatly. Would you spend a bit on him or wait until he's justified the extra 0.5/1m?

Totally agree, the first few weeks are so volatile with transfers you can get priced out of moves real quick. I do believe this down to loads of casual players just making transfers with no forethought. These players usually give up after a couple of months but their crazy knee-jerking in those first few weeks has a major affect on prices.

I would add, dont be afraid to take a couple of points hits early on to get on the form, and therefore rising in price, player.

Yep just like the post above mentioned... The overpriced low scoring players will be dropped for the under priced high scoring players so they can afford the big name striker who scored over the other big name striker!

Gotta be on the ball and spending points at the start to stay up... the .1's you gain here will be worth something in the long run to get that proper job team

Great post.. These gems are dead zone gold.

Saying that, I am of the opinion that picking good value nailed on starters is essential but not with a view to protecting the bank especially. For me I just feel they'll bring back the most points in the long run. I also factor in fixtures heavily.

The best conclusions can be reached by many different routes!

      I would add:

      A) avoid rock bottom priced players - if they drop you have nowhere to go

      B) have a spread of different prices - if your midfield is priced 12 9.5 8 7 6 it gives you more options to juggle transfers than if it's 12 8 7.5 7.5 7.5

And most importantly C) pick the players who are going to score well and avoid the one's who are going to score badly...

He seems like such a safe bet. I can already see his bandwagon speeding onward after the first 4 games... OR, i could be stuck with him suffering price falls telling myself "wait one more game" and then selling him b4 a hattrick. He seems more of the keep for 10 games and get 50 points rather than buy for a run of 3 fixtures and expect 30 points kinda player

Safe bet, especially with those peno duties. With Berba, i think we should know now when to ditch him; when the team is over-reliant on him (Ruiz & Duff out + no other options) and in poor form, that's when we should kick him out. i've learned that from last season.

I missed out on Gayle in the championship game last year but I am very tempted to put him in this season. Barry Fry thinks he will be the Palace top scorer this season and says he is an instinctive finisher who can also hold the ball up. Without Murray Palace have no goalscorer. If I get RVP I will consider him for 3rd striker coming off the bench.

Who else going with Jrod as their cheapest attacker until the flavor of the season budget attacker comes out of hiding? i can already predict wasting transfers if my squad gets an injury to prevent thomas coming off my bench. 6 million may seem like a lot to bench, but considering the luxury of being able to prevent a kneejerk transfer and let Jrod into your startin 11 instead seems well worth it.

JRod may do well but I will not get him. He had a good couple of months last season but that was out of the blue. He may do the same as Puncheon and be a flash in the pan and lose value quickly. If going for a Saints striker then it is worth the extra 1.5 to get Lambert who has had 2 great seasons in a row.

Southampton on the lookout for a new striker and the fans on Soton forums reckon Lambert is gonna be rested/rotated more this year. They all brimming with praise for Jrod though(even b4 the brace) and reckon this'll be his year. Too lazy to link you up so just browse through the Soton forums 🙂 .. u a crystal palace fan cov? reckon gayle will be worth a punt?

No Coventry fan who lived in Portsmouth for many years. Did the championship game last year and was about 60th so followed the championship a bit last year. Only had Murray and Parr last season from Palace. I see many have Parr. He can cause frustration when rotated with Dean Moxey. Had Hudson from Cardiff last year but had to get rid of Whittingham when he was dropped. F Campbell was good value last year but he may only be a sub in away games due to formation changes. Had Koren on and off last year but he did not do much. Quinn was better value. Faye was in and out of the side so had to change him. A real shame for fantasy purposes that Watford did not go up.

Not sure about Cornelius. Mackay likes a big striker so he may do well but I will not gamble on him. Best Cardiff value is goalscoring defenders like Hudson and Connolly imo. Hull were poor in fantasy terms and Palace have lost their 2 best players so not a vintage year when looking for fantasy players from the promoted clubs.

I can see this 5.5m-6m striker slot coming back to bite us in the bum.

    Eg Anelka/Gayle/jRod.

We are all hoping we are going to unearth the next Benteke/Lukaka. Reality is we prob won't.

To make things worse, these players will prob score when you bench them. And if all goes pear shape it will take a hit(or WC) to upgrade them to Lambchops or Berbatov...or RVP.

    You know it's true.

I think having a Chelsea defender will be essential to the team as Mourinho has a reputation of winning games in Stamford Bridge and maintaining that particular feat, which in all likeliness will see him amassing a lot of clean sheets.

Most of the Chelsea defenders are priced with almost the same tag so I'm having dilemmas as to who I should go for in terms of goal threat and nailed on spot.

ya that's basically where i'm at. cech i think is actually the "safest", but he isn't as much fun as owning ivan or luiz since they have the chance at the odd goal/assist.

You have Mark Schwarzer just one spot behind the goalkeeping choice order, so I wouldn't say Cech is exactly safe. If Mourinho confirms and maintains that Terry will be his first choice defender, I will be the first to jump the ship on him.

cech will remain the number 1 choice, that's almost for sure, barring any injuries. i think a cole is the safest defender since they don't really have many solid options at LB

I still don't get how a Citeh striker can be ignored for NEW/car/HULL.

Especially with Chel having a blank gw 3 and United(Rvp) playing Liv(a) in gw 3.

This game is about (c) options...Bale/Walcott/Haz/Kun/Rvp

I just don't trust Silva enough as a (c) option.

Agreed. But now City have signed Negredo ( subject to medical) so it's Kun, Dzeko and Negredo.
Really have no idea who will be banging in the goals. But Silva will provide the assist and chip in with the odd goal so to me he's an option, just maybe not a (C)

Agree with you on that. but can you have the "big 5" without compromising on the other areas of your team. one has tto be dropped and finding the right player to drop among them will be the key in the first 3 gws imo.

I agree. That's my point. We only have fixtures to go on, and that indicates Rvp / united(with new manager) have the toughest 3 fixtures.

Citeh have the easiest. Chelsea have a possible DGW and Ars/Spurs are ok.

It's a must looking at the early fixtures. I'm with Aguero at the moment. Even with the recently and newly joined Negredo to the side, it will take a few games for him to bed in or maybe bang in a few goals on his debut. The first few GWs would be Aguero for me. Dzeko's gametime, however, is impacted by Negredo's arrival and should be ignored for the time being, in my opinion.

Tough to choose from. There are doubts laying around concerning Sturridge's fitness for the start of the season and Rodriguez looks another one of cheap budgets on the rise. Aguero and Negredo have much to be seen but my take is that Aguero will be given the nod ahead of Negredo for the first few GWs. And City's first few fixtures will be keyed to Aguero.

Is it me, or is picking your three strikers this year harder than ever?

Looking at the top teams, there are many factors putting me off any player

Utd: RVP the only real option here, but at 14m, choosing him damages the rest of your team quite a bit
City: Who knows what the situation here will be like if Negredo and Jovetic sign? Rotation galore?
Che: Ba, Torres, Lukaku...with Jose favouring one striker none look guaranteed starts
Ars: Giroud seems to be at a reasonable price, but will Walcott be given the role up front from time to time, meaning Giroud drops to the bench? We saw it happen last year
Spurs: With one striker being favoured here, Ade and Defoe are not great options. Maybe if Benteke signs and is guaranteed starts, at 9m he could be a good buy

Moving onto the medium priced players

Sturridge: A bit expensive at 9m for my liking
Bony: A bit expensice for a player who has not yet been tested in the PL
Lambert: Good price if he replicates last season, getting old now though so could see much less game time
Kone: Good fixtures and Martinez loves him, but who knows how he'll do at a new team. Surely Jelavic will get some games?
Aspas: Will probably see limited gametime, could play out wide with Sturridge the main man

    Cheapies:

J-Rod: Nice price, strong finish to last season. Would I rather Lambert for a bit more though?
Crouch: Plays for Stoke, enough said
Anelka: Getting old, could play second fiddle to Long
All other cheapies are then from the promoted sides, so who knows how they will do. Could be a Rickie Lambert or an Ebanks-Blake, who knows?!

Just thought I'd share my thoughts on the strikers this year, seems much more difficult than last year to get it right!

Crouch - nothing wrong with him. Only 6m, Ave of 130pts the last 2 seasons. Hughes might get them more attacking this season.

Thats actually quite a good plan.
      But two considerations
1.Unfortunately, Rvp has been known to score against Pool and Chelsea.
2.Also, if City sign Jovetic, that could throw a spanner in the works!

the point is you can't have all. so RVP having the worst fixture makes it easier to dump him. but then you need to hide behind the sofa for 3 gws when United play.:D

and as far as Jovetic and Negredo are concerned, i don't think they pose any threat to Aguero in the opening few gws. Aguero is as nailed on as it gets.

If you want RVP, Aguero, Walcott and Bale in your team, I’ve found a way of accommodating all 3 into a team that all the players should at least feature- what do you think:

    Boruc (Marshall)
    Mertasacker, Coleman, Collins (Parr, Chester)
Bale, Walcott, G. Ramirez, Jarvis (Thomas)
    RVP, Aguero, Anelka

It is noteable from the price list that there are hardly any decent 4.0 budget defenders and generally 4.5 is the budget price this year. Whatsmore, there are hardly any 6+ defenders in the game either. Ars/City - the two teams with the best defensive records last year, both have players in the 5.5 bracket.

With nearly all defenders being priced in the 4.5-5.5 range I have been considering a change of tactic and making use of the mid-range value in defence this year by switching to a 4-3-3 formation; with the back 4 consisting of 3 perma players and a rotating pair.

    Mignolet/Boruc
    Nasty Kos Coleman Shaw/Collins
    Bale Silva Walcott Brady/Thomas
    Aguero Lukaku J-Rod

The advantage I can see from such a strategy is a much stronger bench. There is always an attacking cheap mid playing at home ready to come on as 1st sub, or to play ahead of one of the main 3 defenders in the event that they have a dodgy away fixture.

The Front 7 will obviously be re-arranged if chelsea have a double.

i like that forward line actually, save for Cornelius. Feel that sturridge will do a good job leading the line in Suarez absence, and Wolf is an unknown quantity but a proven goal scorer. Good opening fixtures for Sturridge and Wolf.

Cornelius i'm not too sure. Could consider Kone or JRod instead
