The Community Round Up

The launch of the Fantasy Premier League game has dominated discussion this week, as the community’s brainboxes leapt into action to help analyse the new prices and a change to the bonus points system. As well as assessing a tactical “bombshell” on the Sky Sports game, we also roll out our regular look at the community leagues taking place this summer.

Hottest Topics

FPL’s revamped Bonus Point System has caused a lot of debate with the community’s eagle eyed members quick to work out which types of players are set to benefit and which will lose out.  Jack(off)Attack was on hand to let us know that defenders could be the immediate winners, with midfielders and attackers set to have to work far harder for their bonus points.

Bedknobs and Boomsticks then took up the baton for the bonus experts by working out which players will benefit. His analysis shows that support strikers like Fulham’s Brian Ruiz, creative midfielders such as Arsenal’s Mikel Arteta and central defenders such as Phil Jagielka, of Everton, are likely to be among the biggest winners.

Demi was among the first to look at some of the best bargains in the FPL game. A tall and  handsome Bulgarian stranger from West London was among those he spotted in his crystal ball.

Some smelling salts was needed to revive  community members left in shock at a combined £26m price tag for Robin Van Persie and Gareth Bale. Many are opting for just one of these heavy hitters but some community members have worked out a way to get both in their teamLateriser12 and SAB were among those to show that a credible 15 man team can be achieved with these two giants of the game on board.

Meanwhile, In Tommy We Trust has been using the ancient art of his alchemy to separate the gold dust from the fool’s gold within the FPL game.

Over the last week we decided to ask the community to share their expert advice regarding team selection and strategy in the Sky game. D1sable’s bombshell regarding the captaincy rules gave us more than we had bargained for. His news could prove a gamechanger for Sky players. We await official confirmation about his startling discovery.

Form over fixtures is one of those debates that is intrinsic to Fantasy Football  and when it comes to fixtures they don’t come tougher than Swansea’s. But should a poor opening schedule mean we overlook the investment and new faces in the Welsh side? Saniul certainly thinks a focus on fixtures could be overrated when it comes to a team on the rise such as Swansea.

Green Windmill has looked even closer at the fixture list and poses the question; are there any fixture proof players? Turns out there are quite a few as his excellent analysis shows.

When someone starts a post with ‘sorry for the long post but…’ it’s a sure sign that an epic tome is on the horizon. Pirate’s mammoth 2,500 word thesis on fantasy football strategy was exactly that, offering an armada’s worth of insightful thoughts on the game.

Fancy taking a punt on one of the new recruits in the Premier League? Let Pochettini guide you through their key stats up to now in other leagues.

Finally, McNulty’s look at goalkeeper rotation also caught our eye, especially his warnings about falling into a potential rotation trap.

Community Leagues

FFS UEFA’s Transfer Window Simulation game reached its bartering stage  as teams look to swap their assets. A total of six deals were made last week. Chelsea led by Declan, Stoke run by Dynamic, Aston Villa under the guidance of Hvt and Swansea under Joga Bonito‘s leadership were particularly active this week. Big name players such as Radamel Falcao, Thomas Müller and Hulk found new homes. This week teams are bidding on defenders for the second time and submission of midfield targets must also be made by  23:59 (BST) on Saturday. Anyone looking to sign up for the game can do so here.

Very daycent. I'm not a Giroud fan but he's good, prob be more consistent in his 2nd season. I'm a big fan of Lukaku, will get him if he's a Chelsea nailed-onner 😉

    Hey everyone,

I am new to the Sky game this year but a seasoned pro in FPL (top 1000 every season for the last 9 years)

I have a question for those who have played both FPL and the Sky game in previous years...

Does your strategy for both differ drastically? And does it muddle your thinking a bit trying to balance both equally?

    Thank you, one and all.

Speaking from my experience...don't go nuts with transfers. They've gone and taken the monthly cap off now so it's very dangerous for knee-jerkers who have just suffered a bad weekend. Had I avoided a September transfer binge, I could have been a contender 😉

Other than that, it shares similar tactics to FPL - captain is king, although this season you can change it for Sunday/Monday - not forgetting to do that is the important thing.

It's actually nice not having to worry about price changes.

    Bale, RVP, or both?

Ok since RVP and Bale come at such a premium this year, I have seen multiple ways of integrating them into a team, but three main ways. I have seen hardly any teams not featuring either. It helps me to use price templates to pick a template team which is cash-effective in al three lines and then tinker from there with specific players, and hopefully this clarifies some of the ideas people have been having.

*The examples are not definitive players, just give you idea of what a team with such a template may look like.

    1) Bale & RVP

Before the prices were released earlier this week, these two players would have been the first two players on the team sheet, alas, they were given such hefty price tags that this situation was made a struggle. As time has gone on I have seen more and more people trying to incorporate both which, in my opinion is still the best way to go around things This is the template I've come up with to fit both of them in.

    GK: 2 cheaps (4.5/4.5 -- 5.0 if you've got spare cash)
DEF: 5 cheaps (4.0-5.0, since RVP and Bale are so expensive this frees up a bit more cash)
    MID: BALE, 1 high-range [8.0-10.0], 2 mid-range [6.0-7.5], 1 cheap [4.5/5.0]
FWD: RVP, 1 high-range [7.0-9.5], 1 cheap [4.5-6.5, Anelka is proving popular atm]
    eg: http://imgur.com/7dQR5xo

    2) Bale & no RVP

Although many people seem to be trying to integrate both into their team, many are resorting to sticking with just Bale because of his lower price tag. Since the midfield seems to be more flexible this year I chose this particular template, plus with no RVP and a lack of attacking threat in mid price forwards this year more money may need to be spent in the midfield, but I noted a possible change at the bottom.

    GK: 2 cheaps (4.5/4.5 -- 5.0 if you've got spare cash)
DEF: 4 cheap [4.0/4.5 use a rotation plan], 1 high-range [5.5-6.5 (Baines and Vert are too expensive for me this year)]
    MID: BALE, 2 high-range [8.0-10.0], 1 mid-range [6.0-7.5], 1 cheap [4.5/5.0]
FWD: Either 2 high-range [7.0-9.5] and a cheap [4.5-6.5] OR Aguero (could turn into either Rooney or another big hitter defender), 1 high-range [7.0-9.5] and a cheap [4.5-6.5]
*If you wanted one more high-range defender, you could easily drop a high-range midfielder to a mid-range and then upgrade a cheap defender
    eg: http://imgur.com/Gijhw72

    3) RVP & no Bale

I haven't seen many of these to be honest, but could work quite well with the right players. Also if Bale leaves (can't see it happening though) then this could be what people resort to. I found that this template offers more defensively, but less attacking wise than the others but is still not awful going forward.

GK: 2 cheaps [4.5/4.5 (5.0 if you've got spare cash)]
    DEF: 3 cheaps [4.0/4.5 use a rotation plan], 2 high-range [5.5-6.5]
    MID: 2 high-range [8.0-10.0], 2 mid-range [6.0-7.5], and a cheap [4.5/5.0]
FWD: RVP, 1 high range [7.0-9.5], and a cheap [4.5-6.5]
    eg: http://imgur.com/MrukDBJ

The reason I put 2 cheap goalies on all of them was personal preference, but that can easily be changed. Happy Tinkering!

I have gone for RVP and BALE but my team is a little different.

          Jaaska/Mignolet(?) Davis

          Coleman, Toure/Rat(?), Mertesacker, Chester, Parr

          Bale, Hazard, Snodgrass, Koren, Wanyama

          Sturrdige, RVP, Jrod

          Thoughts would be VERY appreciated,
I'm not sure if Rat will be getting full game time? if so I think Migs is the better GK option?

How's about this for a Bale-based team that still has a beasty midfield, if a little weaker defence:

      Boruc

      Gibbs - Coleman - Amorebieta

      Bale - Mata - Coutinho - Walcott

      Anelka - Lambert - Benteke

      (McGregor - Turner - Chester - Wanyama)

Benteke could easily swap out for sturridge as same price but unsure on that one! What do you reckon?

Wow Torres has DROPPED! Might hold off on him until I see how Mourinho gets him going... Is mad to think Chelsea are looking for Rooney up front when they already have Lukaku, Ba, Torres... could be a concern with rotation (especially for Lukaku this season - expecting similar to how Moses was used last season).

Good shout on Sturridge, think I'm going with him thinking about it!

Provided that Rooney leaves and Chelsea don't have a DGW, my current draft is:

    Boruc - Foster
    Nastasic - Coleman - Clyne - Collins - B.Turner
    Bale - Hazard - Kagawa - Mirallas - Kacaniklic
    Sturridge - Giroud - Berbatov

I'm lacking Man City attack and might have a bit too much faith in Fulham. Thoughts?

Coming back to my debate on mids I see it this way let's assume we all have 1x Bale and 1x budget. It then how you fill the other 3 spots. There is room for another Hazard/Walcott/Silva type. But if you take another you are left with taking a 4.5 million mid as well, or you take Mirallas and Snodgrass.

    Theo/Hazard +4.5=14
    Snodgrass + Mirallas = 14

Theo will outscore both the latter 2 in all likelyhood, but if you combine the total of both pairs, the latter pair will be well clear unless one budget mid really sets the world alight ala Siggy.

It's the same principle as RvP + J-Rod v Aguero and Sturridge.

But I think J-Rod could be the surprise package of the season. if he gets double figures for goals I think he'll be well worth 6 million.

The one time you'd captain him is before a CL game and a game against City so there's a chance he'll be rested.

I will give you my opinion even though I believe it is impossible to say right now for sure.

The no.1 jersey has yet to be assigned. If this goes to Mannone you will know there is something strange going on! Westwood will, in my opinion, get it and be given the chance to prove his worth to start off. He has been sitting on the bench whilst Mignolet has performed miracles and has expressed a desire to leave if he can't be no.1. He will be doing everything to prove he can. Mannone is there to challenge but I believe he won't be preferred until he proves that he is better than Westwood.

Westwood is a decent keeper and could be Ireland's no.1 if he was getting games. Mannone is very young and will understand he is an understudy for now. I feel it will all become clear soon but my money is on Westwood.

It's strange that more people have picked Mannone in FPL because this is a wild assumption.

Lol this is exactly what I mean when I say this place has flipping changed

What's the point in spending so much flippig time writing flipping essays

Size of some of those posts is a joke

Its fantasyfootball not brain surgery and seeing as the one surgeon I know isn't all that flipping clever and doesn't seem to write flipping essays I'm sure we don't need to. I can sum up everything in there in a couple of sentences.

Get big players from last season.
    Captain rvp or bale
    Don't waste money on defenders
Hold on to your wildcard and flippingng flip your rivals at the end of the season

I'm getting rid of the stars and saying flip because it looks like the rules of changed. Don't know why. Never got a post deleted on here before and some of them were just flipping massive rants

    Aguero Sturridge Helenius/Cornelius

How do i upgrade Alcatraz -> Coleman
or get both Nasty and Koscienlny by downgrading a heavy hitter? (Aguero/Silva/Bale/Hazard)

Downgrade Brady to a 4.5 mid. Robbie's not a prolific scorer, could be helping Hull more defensively than last season where they'll be more focussed on keeping the opposition out more than chasing wins. If he is more attacking then keep him and downgrade Sturridge.

A word of advice for all Jerome Thomas owners:
If Palace's new signing, Jose Campana, is 4.5, I fully recommend getting him over and above Jerome Thomas. From what I've seen, he looks like a dangerous player who would probably play in the hole, offering more points potential.

Nolan is worth it as he will be the one who is creating and scoring goals for West ham and he has been consistent in points wise, So yes i would say he is worth it and i think that Berba and Jrod would be better also due to the fact Berba is very consistent.
