Scout Report – Stevan Jovetic

Last Friday saw Man City make a couple of significant moves in the summer transfer market. Having acquired Alvaro Negredo from Sevilla earlier in the day, Manuel Pellegrini added to his forward options by snapping up Stevan Jovetic from Fiorentina in a deal reported to be in the region of £22m. The 23-year-old Montenegro international is the club’s fourth signing of the close-season, following Fernandinho, Jesus Navas and Negredo to the Etihad as Pellegrini sets about restructuring his first-team ahead of his debut season at the helm:

The subject of plenty interest over the summer, Jovetic is thought to have rejected the advances of both Arsenal and Juventus to join up at the Etihad. Speaking to the club’s official website, he revealed that City’s long-term pursuit was key to his decision, with City centre-half Matija Nastasic also playing a part in persuading him to make the move to the Premier League:

“Manchester City has wanted me for a long time, more than everyone else. They have a big project here and are always fighting for the Champions League and Premier League. This is the reason I came here. I also spoke with Nastasic who tells me good things about Manchester and the players and everything here. He sent me messages every week telling me to come. Now I am here and look forward to playing with him every week.”

The History

Starting his career as a 16-year-old for Partizan Belgrade, Jovetic produced 13 goals and 10 assists over 51 league games between 2006 and 2008, with a further 10 goals arriving in 10 European and domestic cup matches. His performances caught the eye of Fiorentina, with La Viola splashing out £8m for Jovetic’s services in May 2008.

The six foot one forward’s first season in Serie A was a transitional one, however, with just two goals and a pair of assists delivered from 29 matches. Jovetic stepped up a level in 2009/10, with six goals and 10 assists from 29 appearances, but his progress was halted the next year after a cruciate ligament injury ruled him out for the entire 2010/11 campaign. Returning from injury, he racked up 27 goals and 11 assists over 58 Serie A matches in his final couple of seasons at the club.

On the international stage, Jovetic notched twice in six appearances for the Montenegro Under 21s and has turned out for the senior side on 27 occasions, finding the net 10 times.

The Prospects

Mainly utilised as a forward in a 3-5-2 formation at Fiorentina last term, Jovetic is a versatile type who has the ability to play in a number of positions under Pellegrini. While fellow new boy Negredo is a more one-dimensional, typical centre-forward, the Montenegro international summed up his all-round game by saying:

“I’m a forward who is good in one-on-one situations. That’s my best quality and I think my best years are ahead of me. I have played in a lot of systems. I can play as a striker, behind the striker or on the left. I think and I hope I can score between 15 and 20 goals in all competitions this season.”

Pellegrini’s penchant for a 4-2-2-2 system should prove beneficial to Jovetic, then, but with Aguero, Negredo, David Silva and Jesus Navas all vying for the four advanced roles, in addition to the options provided by Samir Nasri and Edin Dzeko, rest and rotation will surely come into effect.

With both Negredo and Sergio Aguero perceived as more natural goalscorers, it’s unlikely that Jovetic would get the nod to lead the line in a 4-2-3-1 formation, for example, with a role in “the hole” or even wide left a possibility. His trickery in possession and eye for a killer pass may be more suited to a more withdrawn, playmaker role, thus reducing his appeal as a Fantasy prospect –indeed, as mentioned in the Negredo Scout Report, Aguero could still be the forward to earn most game time under Pellegrini, due to his ability to play either of the central roles up top.

Both new boys have yet to be listed in the Fantasy games, though a price of 9.5 looks likely for Jovetic and Negredo in Fantasy Premier League – less than Aguero but clearly more than the 7.5 priced Dzeko, who looks forced further down the pecking order on the back of Friday’s business. At that price, Negredo would likely be the better value due to his advanced role though much depends on just how much Pellegrini plans to utilise the depth of his squad over all competitions – it may well be that Fantasy managers are faced with the same dilemma posed by Roberto Mancini, where we’re anxiously awaiting the team sheets every weekend.

At present, then, it’s hard to see past Aguero as the man most likely in terms of security, though the remaining pre-season games will hopefully give us a window into the new manager’s thinking. With home games against Newcastle and Cardiff and a trip to Hull in the opening three, the platform is certainly there for Pellegrini’s side to rack up the goals and get their season off to a quick-fire start as they look to reclaim the title from neighbours United.

Cornelius is a bit of a punt, as is Ramirez, i'd swap the two out for Rodriguez and a £5.5m mid.

I am slightly worried about no City coverage but it seems even Aguero and Silva aren't guaranteed consistent starts. Will look to transfer some in if a stand out City option emerges.

Coutinho, only based on the fact that he was a points machine at the end of last season. Decent pre-season form as well. If Silva returns to the form of 2 years ago, then it's a toss-up.

Aguero - more game time and will play as line striker with everybody else behind him.
Thomas - he's cheaper, don't need expensive for a sub
Coutinho - he's on top form, not only does he get many assists but he scores plus his price is likely to rise

    some interesting thought:

if we are predicting that two players will score similar number of goals e.g. Walcott and Giroud,
then we instinctly will get Walcott (due to 1 more pt. for goal)

HOWEVER, the new bps favour a forward goal more than a midfielder goal, so the forward will likely to get the higher bp (assuming they score in same match), so in the end, their 1pt. on extra pt. on midfielder goal will get cancelled out with the bp advantage.

and as Giroud is 1m cheaper than Walcott, so Giroud may be a better buy?

(I am assuming all their other stats are the same)

    Brendan Rodgers on Pepe Reina:

"Pepe Reina and I went out for a meal a couple of months before the end of the season and I told him exactly what we were going to do, which was to provide real competition in that area. I always felt it was important for us to have competition right the way through the squad, and that includes the goalkeepers."

fast forward a couple of weeks ...

"Last year I had to make decisions in pre-season for the financial stability of the club and that's something I've obviously had to do this year as well. Financially, it is something we needed to look at."

"Nolan performs better with Carroll"- I must admit I've had my doubts about this and was especially interested when people were choosing not to pick Nolan based on this conjecture despite his favourable fixtures to start the season.

I looked at the results of West Ham's Premier league games last season and BEFORE Nolan's hat-trick (with Carroll playing) against AN ALREADY RELEGATED Reading, these were essentially (bit of a grey area with substitute appearances) Nolan's league stats:

With Carroll: 18 games, 4 goals, 1 assist

Without Carroll: 15 games, 3 goals, 1 assist

Also, he started the season well. Providing a good pre-season under his belt I think Nolan is a great pick- a proven fantasy midfield goalscorer at a reasonable price.

      A lot.

Nolan's total output over the season was 149 points in 33 games.

      That's broken down into:
      - 97 points in 19 games with Carroll (5.11 PPG)
      - 28 points in 10 games without Carroll (2.80 PPG)
      - 24 points in 4 games where Carroll played some part but not the full game (6.00 PPG)

Even adding those last 2 categories together to be generous that only makes 52 points in 14 games (3.71 PPG) without Carroll.

Also, to satisfy those who for arbitrary reasons don't wish to count GW38, that would bring the 'with Carroll' figures down to 78 points in 18 games (4.33 PPG)

Whichever way you slice it, Nolan's output is much better with Carroll than without.

          Cheers Dino 🙂

In GB's defence I quite like the hot topics which pose the question but don't pretend to offer the answers - gives me something to do 😉

Fair enough gw I am just getting a bit disillusioned with the whole hc experiment tbh. The hot topics are average at best with the odd gem and nobody is upvoting the interesting posts so it is both impossible to find them when you log on and not worth the effort to post anything worthwhile as it gets lost in minutes.

Upvotes need to be promoted in some way imo to increase the quality of posts again otherwise the message boards will be left to the cretins again.

Likewise, sorting by discussion rating doesn't seem to work.

I posted this team yesterday but i thought i'd post it one more time for some more opinions. Haven't tinkered with this team in a day which is a record for me!

    Boruc-Foster

    Mbiwa-Collins-Turner(Nor)-Clyne-Chester (5 way rotation)

    Snodgrass-Ben Arfa-Bale-Hazard-Mirallas

    RVP-Lambert-(4.5)

    Comments and opinions much appreciated!

Mbiwa may not be nailed on (will wait and see)
having a non player (4.5 fwd) also put you in disadvantage, especially when you have HBA and Mirallas, both injury prone.
would rather have 4.5 mid, or get .5 more and buy Gayle

As 5 DEF rotations go that's a bad one.
I've got an article coming soon.

Best for 22m is CPL EVE NEW SOT WHM, although CPL scares me witless.

    Any thoughts greatly appreciated.

    Szczesny, (Boruc)
    Mert, Coleman, Toure, Turner, (Chester)
    Bale, Walcott, Hazard, Silva (Thomas)
    Sturridge, Lambert, (Gayle)

The plan is 2 to play all the big guns each week and then play 1 from Turner, Thomas, Chester, Gayle. Obviously no RVP is a problem but I think it's more well rounded this way. Thanks lads.

What a player he was, remember going to games as a kid, just to watch if he will score a goal from the corner.

So, say Chelsea have their DGW planned for Gw2. What would people's strategies be?
My thoughts are that it would be mad to to in with three Chelsea players considering you would either have to have a damned expensive bench or take a hit in order to avoid expensive bench. On the other hand you would then be going into what could be a valuable start without the coverage, Hull, Man Utd, Villa as their opening fixtures. I know Man Utd will be a tough game but with Mourinho as their new manager, Moyes new system finding its feet, you would expect Chelsea to score against them and there are surely points in that game.
I think I'd be tempted to go in with the 3 players from Chelsea but instead of the expensive options like Hazard, Mata, Luiz, I'd go in with Lampard, maybe Azpi, etc to shave off the cash affording the option of either benching them or choosing to sell for the blank and leaving cash to upgrade to any early bandwagons.
    Thoughts?

one will be Hazard>Silva (or whichever city mid bandwagon)

HOWEVER PLANNED TRANSFER AT START OF SEASON USUALLY RESULT AS A HIT, as there will be many reasonable bandwagons
